It should be a dark and quiet night, but it’s far from that. He had seen it from his penthouse’s balcony: the Minior falling en masse from the sky. There’s dozens upon dozens of them, perhaps even hundreds. Countless. They fall as they had last year during the meteor shower, but Mars is sure he has never seen this many of them gathering in one place.

What had compelled him to come?

His own colourful Minior surround him, staying close as they watch their brethren fall. His own are unharmed despite their exposed cores – protected by spending most of their time in the confines of Luxury Balls.

He has always liked the species, and because he has, he knows that most of the Minior here will soon die if nothing is done. There’s something sad about that notion: that these pokémon are among the first victims of the meteor.

Xanthos’ behaviour, more than being the result of his Illumina nature, has to do with the fact that he’s young. It may also have to do with the fact that despite how strict of a trainer Mars generally is, the blue and yellow Dragapult is one of the few pokémon he can’t help but dote on, especially because it's still incredibly obedient. If one were to ask Mars himself, though? Well… Mars would probably say that Xanthos has too much of angelo vestri in him, and that’s why he sometimes acts like a total dumbass. Angelo does count Xanthos’ twin among his Dragapult ranks, after all – much to the pretended dismay of the underboss.

”He’s still a ghost. Different ability from the usual, though.” Mars explains while calmly washing his hands. Once this is done, he dons on a fresh pair of nitrile gloves. He nods towards the scale nearby.

”We should get him to that scale over there. Start off by getting his weight and measurements. After that, the instructions I was given talk about blood and tissue samples… and this.”

Mars holds up a long cotton swab for Lex to see, sealed in the plastic casing meant to keep it sterile.

Still, he gets to work, whistling for Xanthos to get up from the floor. The dragon does so, despite the fact that he had been enjoying Lex's scratches. Knowing the terrain is only an advantage to a certain degree, especially in a place like Mount Pyre. Heavy fog often overtakes the mountain, and the ghost and psychic pokémon that call this place their home are known to be prone to pulling tricks and confusing people who wander through these hallowed grounds.

Case in point: the pair of Claydol upon which the Unown’s gaze falls.

Both Mars and the symbol watch as the Claydol face off against one another, one of them using what to the psychic specialist looks like an obvious POWER TRICK. That’s the thing about psychic types: they love tricks.

Will the wild pokémon also be a problem on the day the meteor is meant to be teleported?

For someone who calls himself a “Private Investigator”, it sure had taken Aidan Hereford a moment to put the pieces together. That might just be a good thing, though. Anonymity is key, after all, and to know that even someone who has known Mars for years would struggle to associate him with Team Rocket and see him as the man behind Tuesday’s mask pleases him tremendously. There’s even an unseen smile.

The Urshifu’s attacks continue, on and on and on without mercy. Its trainer knows well that it will not stop until a command is given, and yet such a signal is withheld. The Delphox attempts to defend itself, yet flames do little to deter Oreius’ resolve. He punches, he kicks, and he doesn’t even make a sound through it all.

Out of all people, Aidan is perhaps one of the only ones who would understand this much, and so it is that he has no reason not to speak this truth. Aidan knows the version of him that had been shackled by his family – the version he keeps hidden from everyone out of Sinnoh.

One final kick is all it takes. Something breaks, the fox’s neck twists, and its head turns to an unnatural degree. Like a broken doll, the unmoving body of the Delphox falls to the ground, joining the countless others that have been buried beneath. It’s only then that the Urshifu stop; calm, as if nothing had just happened.

The choice itself is protection. This encounter could have gone much differently.

The Wushu Pokémon is calm and unmoving. Warm crimson droplets drip down from its luscious fur, especially its knuckles, but it’s almost as if the Urshifu is unaware of this. Oreious knows. Oreious has been trained for this. Oreious continues to watch Aidan, ready to also deal with him if the command is given. With a flash of light, it is returned to the Luxury Ball’s confines.

Once the Drifblim is dealt with, the Unown-X marches onwards, the temporary distraction clearly having been no more than that: temporary.
