[break][break] "asshole," she muttered under her breath. no wonder paxton concordas had wanted her to accompany the ex-head-ranger on this mission. because he'd done it before, and was shoving yet another one of his responsibilities onto her plate. well, she'd have a word with him later.

[break][break] before she can say more, the sky darkens into a tumultuous blue. roars echo in evergrande's cliffs, accompanied by the sound of howling winds. callie's throat closed with fear. it was jarring, to stare in the eyes of a god.

[break][break] they weren't going to die out here, were they?

[break][break] just like that, ORIGIN PULSE breaks water and rock, nearly throwing them into the craggy sea beneath.

[break][break] shit. maybe they were going to die.

[break][break] "do you have a pokemon that can fly?"

[break][break] "technically," she said, jerking her head back to the blond. "yes. though, it's a fire-type." her voice warbled slightly. maybe she should've asked paxton concordas to borrow something.

[break][break] "you got anything better?"

[break][break] the nonchalant way that annalise henderson regarded the scenario was unnerving. and kind of hot. but she wasn't going to focus on that now.

[break][break] because that god was about to swallow them whole.

[break][break] "watch out!" callie yelled abruptly, just as the beast launched yet another ORIGIN PULSE at them, a tad closer to where they were standing. rocks and crag split, making the cliff beneath them crumble.

[break][break] over the howling winds, the officer shouted:

[break][break] "whatever we do - we have to do it quick! or else we're gonna die out here."

there is a moment of silence, until callie lets out a sharp laugh. "jesus christ. anyone ever tell you that you sound depressing?"

[break][break] "you're not wrong though. cap and i fought, back in kanto."

[break][break] her cheeks are warm from the alcohol, bringing the foggy memories to the surface.

[break][break] "he wanted to leave. i wanted to stay."

[break][break] "i thought our relationship was over then. and he thought i'd died back there."

she smirks. "special recipe. you jealous?" it was one that she'd perfected, ever since skoll had been a pup.

[break][break] "you act like the bullpen is a hellish place."

[break][break] in some ways, callie preferred it. it reminded her of the chaos of kanto.

[break][break] but she could see why someone like paxton concordas might hate it.

[break][break] the mention of the amnesty program and it's inhabitants brings a matching scowl to his face, once that she can't help but feel a sigh of relief. even though things are much different on hoenn, some things will always be the same.

[break][break] "don't need to tell me twice. i'll shoot their heads off before they can even blink."

[break][break] she billows out a sigh.

[break][break] "maybe one day they'll see things our way. or they'll die trying." she huffs. "time to wrap up? i think we got all we need." a hand reaches over to the wild absol, who is much more affectionate now that it's been fed. "c'mon girl, let's get you home."

[break][break] gazing into the stormy seas, together they witness the gradual clouding of the once-blue sky. shades of grey billow in the distance as rain starts to descend in large drops from the heavens.

[break][break] she wipes a droplet from her cheek, swiping at it with a palm, turning as anna speaks to her.

[break][break] "huh? oh yeah. i do. why do you ask?"

[break][break] curiosity weighs in her amber eyes as she waits for the upcoming storm.

"freya morningstar," the kanto vet replies, blinking as the tried to remember who that was. of the list of names that paxton concordas had given to her before she applied to the position. "oh, that's the councilwoman."

[break][break] she hadn't ever met the other woman personally, though it would probably be a good idea to. she wondered if MATIAS SILPH or paxton concordas could introduce her.

her first mission on her new assignment is protecting league personnel. it's not wholly surprising, given what her job description is. but when she reads the assignment details, she can't help but gawk a little bit.

[break][break] he gives a careless, empty shrug as response.

[break][break] after all, the lake leviathan still cursed evergrande's shores for some time now. nearby civilians lounging on the beast had been told to evacuate, and the former office stood on the edge of the cliffs, hand at a holster on the side.

she arches a brow.

[break][break] she feels like loyalty should be the standard. though, then again, perhaps when you're someone like her who had - for the majority of her life - had no one, it made the people she did find that much more important.

[break][break] instead of saying her true thoughts, she simply smiles at him like she has something to hide. "well if you're lucky, mr. stone, maybe you'll be on the end of my 'admirable loyalty' one day."

[break][break] callie takes a swig of the drink that she's provided him, swirling the bourbon around in the glass.

[break][break] "i met paxton in the army in kanto. you should know that — it's in my file."

[break][break] how could she possibly explain the connection that the two of them had? when they'd first met, they hadn't gotten along. they'd butted heads too much. but together, they'd been through brimstone and fire. she would die for him.

[break][break] except he wouldn't let her. he'd left.

[break][break] "but why am i loyal to him? i guess..." she hummed, ruminating on the thought. or perhaps ruminating about how much she wanted to divulge to someone that would probably be her boss. she glanced sideways at him, her cheeks warm from the alcohol.

[break][break] "he'd die for me if it came down to it, and i know i'd die for him. you know anyone like that, mr. stone?"

[break][break] she winked at him. reaching into her satchel, she pulled out a bottle of high value dog treats for skoll that she reserved for occasions when he was particularly difficult. they were special poffins that she had perfected the recipe for. picking up a colorful red one she plucks it from the jar before rolling it towards the absol.

[break][break] curiously, it sniffs the treat.

[break][break] her lips twisted into a scowl at the mention of the rangers. "i don't know why you even bother helping out as much as you do. i'd rather die i think then caught dead working with those shitheads in their amnesty program."

he sees right though her, cutting to the center of things. a fact that she appreciates.

[break][break] "i came to hoenn because of paxton," she concedes. "and while i'm not really attached at the hip with him, things didn't seem quite the same after he left the precinct."

[break][break] "and i wanted to do something more important than just sitting in the bullpen, twiddling my thumbs, ya know? maybe it's mundane or whatever, but at least it'll mean something more than just filling out stupid paperwork."

[break][break] she glances towards him, lips slotting into a cocky grin.

[break][break] "plus, it's pax. i'd follow him anywhere."

[break][break] she says nothing else on the manner, though it's obvious she's still bemused. whether it's the way that he seems to carry a conversation or ALEXANDER STONE himself is left up in the air.

[break][break] it's a good question. one that she's thought about time and time again. why she left kanto, why she followed paxton concordas out of the army, why she took position at his abandoned precinct.

[break][break] "i suppose if i say i was looking for a change of pace, that's not gonna be enough for you?" she jokes.

skoll and hati, her two lycanroc, chased each other like puppies around the festival space as callie walked through the food stalls. it wasn't often that she got a break — the vital city tournament had taken the city by storm, and unfortunately, many of her shifts involved playing security officer. as a result, however, today was one of the days that she'd had off.

[break][break] and because she was stupid, she went to the scene of the crime in disguise. she wore a pair of sunglasses that were a little too big for her face, and a low-cut top that she was sure paxton concordas would never see her in. after all, she'd wanted to snoop on him to see how he was doing in the tourney. and maybe even MATIAS SILPH , though she hadn't connected with the elite four in a while. but how much could he have gotten up to in the time she forgot to text him? probably not much.

[break][break] unaware, callie hands were wrapped around a very decedent fudge-dipped churro. she was in vacation mode. totally susceptible to whatever attacks might've come her way.
