Festering GRUDGES and immense HATRED were not unfamiliar sentiments to BARNABY FINCH. In fact, they were partly what fueled his ambitions within ROCKET. Funneled forces, motivators for control.[break][break]

Currently, however, these feelings were unleashed — no longer tethered by the admin's natural composure. CHIEN-PAO and WO-CHIEN's influence, now heightened in intensity by their proximity, saw to that.[break][break]

Instinctively, Barnaby recoiled from the gelid ice and wind summoned by the Ruinous Beast, raising his arms to protect himself from its first frigid attack.[break][break]

Sybille, on the other hand, wasted no time trying to block the cold; the NINETALES' DROUGHT ability raised the temperature around her to an uncomfortable degree, melting the snow on contact with her body. The fox leapt into action, positioning herself between Barnaby and CHIEN-PAO, before expelling a concentrated HEAT WAVE toward the enormous feline.[break][break]

Meanwhile, the thudding sound of flesh hitting the floor caused Barnaby to whip around, only to see Elisabeth Fiorelli splayed beneath the body of another man.[break][break]

"Idiot!" The word clawed its way out from deep in Barnaby's chest, guttural and angry. A firm grip seized Grigori Sokolov by the back of his collar and, without hesitation, the admin heaved him toward CHIEN-PAO. THEO BECKETT's kick wasn't enough for someone so weak-minded and treacherous.[break][break]

Though the guard wouldn't be thrown far, it was enough to lay him out on the table like a sacrificial lamb. Better a mindless fool given up to the beast than one of the other higher-ups.

His guest’s begging would go unacknowledged. Perceived, but ignored. Instead, Barnaby denied the ranger’s remembered emotions, his succinct answer coming out sharp and cold — severing the lifeline Caleb offered to another time and place.[break][break]

“That wasn’t real, Caleb. It was a dream.” Twenty years there, but only moments of unconsciousness on their plane of existence. [break][break]

“This is your reality.” Suddenly, with more abrupt force than he’d used before, Barnaby cut into the cord across Caleb’s left pectoral muscle. Threads easily gave way, leaving the brunt of the movement to bite into the flesh beneath. It was a sustained pressure; deep and personal, somehow. [break][break]

Admittedly, BARNABY FINCH didn't know jayden cross very well. He respected the man, fought alongside him, approved of his capacity as ROCKET admin.[break][break]

But their relationship did not go deeper than that. For now. Perhaps this moment of vulnerability was the crack in the facade Barnaby needed to weasel his way in.[break][break]

"Let's grab a drink after this. A little break will do us good." Barnaby himself couldn't remember how many hours he'd logged in the RKS Simulation so far. [break][break]

"Besides, you owe me a billiards rematch." Here he winked, smiling slightly.[break][break]

The large, open Nursery brought back horrific memories of a similar scene in the Ultra Deep Sea. Ultra Beast eggs hatching, gruesome hallucinations, sleepless, nightmare-filled nights. [break][break]

Barnaby wanted little to do with this room. Luckily, with the combined efforts of Zev Harcourt's ROTOM and Marza Volchitsa's KOMMO-O, the dangers within were quickly quelled. There were only a few haggard Megalopolans — scientists trapped within the laboratory, perhaps? — to contend with. It was almost too easy...[break][break]

And just like that, Barnaby's thoughts appeared to conjure more trouble for the trio.[break][break]

At the other end of the Nursery, an ultra wormhole suddenly split apart the fabric of reality with swirling, crackling energy. From within, a huge claw extended outward... and then an arm, and then a gargantuan belly with a mouth where flesh and fat should be.[break][break]

A GUZZLORD. There was no mistaking it.[break][break]

"Up ahead! Ultra Beast incoming!" Barnaby reached for his belt, preparing to attack before the GUZZLORD could completely step into their realm. His FLORGES emerged from her capsule and aimed a swift MOONBLAST at the ultra wormhole.

Barnaby watched as she split his legs apart, as she unlatched his belt and unbuttoned his pants — completely at her mercy.[break][break]

He hardly registered the abrupt stopping of their car. All attention was on her, buried between his thighs, teasing, titillating. Elisa could demonstrate her endurance all day, if that was her prerogative. [break][break]

"Competitive, yes. But not without calculation. For example," He shifted slightly, becoming more comfortable in preparation for what was to come.[break][break]

CONSEQUENCES OF A DREAM[break][break]

This plot came out of nowhere, but I am incredibly happy with its progress and ramifications over multiple characters. Nelle and I paired up Caleb Harcourt and BARNABY FINCH on a whim for Postdormitum, never expecting the two would click so well. After the events of PD, Zev Harcourt added his brother to the ROCKET hit list, and Barnaby took up the hunt after realizing Caleb was the same ranger that almost killed him in the Ultra Deep Sea.[break][break]

Barnaby found his opportunity to capture Caleb for interrogation and eventual termination during Goodbye Galar. But first... they had to endure twenty long years together. An incredible amount of time to hold a vendetta against someone, especially when the structure and order of ROCKET had crumbled in the interim. Eventually, antagonism led to a unique sort of intimacy between the two men — a distraction from the poisoned Galar BARNABY FINCH resented so much, and an escape from the pressures of nobility for Caleb Harcourt.[break][break]

After GG and Caleb's successful kidnapping, Barnaby brings his new captive to an isolated prison cell hidden beneath Sootopolis City. In several threads, Nelle and I explored our character's feelings of connection and loss while also fleshing out their dynamic post-GG. Barnaby refuses to acknowledge what they had in GG, rationalizing that it was only a dream, not their current reality. Caleb struggles with this denial and will continue to do so for the foreseeable future (stay tuned for that follow-up thread!). While imprisoned, Caleb also spills the beans about Laurence Anderson and ARTICUNO being on shaky ground and why his brother wanted him dead, among other things.[break][break]

Of course, Caleb can't stay in Barnaby's dungeon forever, and eventually escapes with the help of a few friends.[break][break]

What I really loved about this plot is how it springboarded other threads and character development, like Isaac Merlo's defection from ROCKET (ORPHEUS, THE END OF THE BEGINNING, & IMMORTAL HATE), being the nail in the coffin for the end of Zev Harcourt and Caleb Harcourt's brotherhood (A HELL OF YOUR OWN MAKING), and allowing characters like jayden cross to explore darker themes and situations.

In Cyberchase Conundrum, Maldacena warned that Universe 820 — our Hoenn's universe — was the Origin Point 'for the early death of all realities'. He further explained that the many anomalies that have occurred over the years were evidence of this, as was the DRK Triad's sinister interest in their Hoenn.[break][break]

Barnaby shares his worries for Hoenn with bryan delarosa in Anastasis, wondering how they might stop this inevitable death of their universe. [break][break]

While Anastasis showcases Barnaby's concerns, the RKS Simulation actually presents a way for him to act on those concerns. He's spent a lot of time within the simulation, gathering information that might be helpful for ROCKET — and Hoenn in general — in future conflicts or situations involving the DRK Triad.
