One rope cut.[break][break]

But BARNABY FINCH didn't stop there. Where threads snapped and gave way, he did not relent, and instead continued to press the knife into Caleb's upper arm.[break][break]

There was something euphoric about the way sharp metal cleaved through wanting flesh. The heady metallic scent, the feeling of surrendering tissue, the groans of pain that came with release.[break][break]

The admin smiled, though it did not crease the corners of his lips.[break][break]

"You're a Ranger..." Barnaby began, languidly circling around the chair Caleb was tied to. "Tell me what you know about Laurence Anderson and his ties to Articuno."

Barnaby would take note of every twitching muscle, every slight deviance in behavior; the admin's observational skills had been honed over years of practical application, after all.[break][break]

He'd know if Caleb was lying.[break][break]

"What's your full name?"[break][break]

"That's right," Barnaby replied, a satisfied purr thrumming in his throat. "And if you want to leave this chair, you'll follow my instructions, like a good little brother."[break][break]

As he'd done in their first session, there was no urgency in the way he spoke or in how he carried himself. The ROCKET admin took his time with Caleb Harcourt, slinking around him like a wildcat scrutinizing its next meal.[break][break]

"For every one of my questions you answer honestly, I'll cut one rope. Answer enough and you'll be free from your restraints."[break][break]

Here Barnaby paused behind Caleb, but the man would still easily be able to see him — a large mirror was mounted on the wall in front of him, after all.[break][break]

"Once you're free, well..." Leaning down, Barnaby pressed his mouth to Caleb's ear, a hint of a smile in his voice. "We can discuss your reward if that happens."[break][break]

The moment was fleeting. Within seconds, the admin returned to his position facing the imprisoned ranger.[break][break]

"Understood?"

ANOTHER Z-Crystal? Weren't these supposed to be sort of rare? As Barnaby picked up his find and placed it amongst the other several crystals in his mesh bag, he hoped to have the same sort of luck with the rest of his search.[break][break]

Given his most recent treasure, he decided to stay in the kelp forest for just a bit longer before moving on. Already he'd traveled through the thick of it and was now close to the other side, as evidenced by the shining sunbeams pouring downward up ahead.[break][break]

Once the vision subsided, Barnaby returned to the present with his eyebrows furrowed in thought. [break][break]

"I'm not exactly sure what I just saw..." He admitted to Naomi Sato, confusion still lining his face. Of the three visions given to him by XATU, this had been the most vague and unclear. He'd have to think on it more to discern the bits and pieces that had flashed through his mind.[break][break]

There was no time for that now, though. Already the simulation was beginning to crumble around them.

Seated at the periphery — just out of blood spatter range — BARNABY FINCH watched jayden cross work.[break][break]

He'd requested the admin's expertise out of curiosity, really, and not necessity. There was a certain notion he wished to test concerning his guest, Caleb Harcourt. Already, Barnaby's inkling seemed to be coming true. [break][break]

When their eyes met, cobalt on stormy blue, there was an unfamiliar, burning outrage there.[break][break]

Not hated. Not fear, even. Betrayal?[break][break]

And over what?[break][break]

Galar had been a fiction. A dream world. What they'd experienced there was outside the bounds of reality. It had been nothing but a fairytale... is what Barnaby rationalized for himself.[break][break]

And fairytales and fables were meant to teach lessons, much as Jayden was about to do to Caleb. Defectors were not tolerated within ROCKET.[break][break]

Idly, as the blows kept coming and blood sprayed onto white tile, Admin Bee wondered who Caleb thought was more of a traitor...[break][break]

Himself, for betraying Zev Harcourt's trust and familial obligation.[break][break]

Or Barnaby, for not acknowledging the fantasy they had spun within that poisoned Galar.[break][break]

Not that it mattered. Caleb Harcourt would be dead soon, anyway.

"A laboratory?" Barnaby offered, answering Marza Volchitsa's question as he carefully alighted from the rickety elevator and stepped into the space before them.[break][break]

Instead of cluttered bullpens, this floor housed various rooms and cordoned off areas with odd-looking equipment, some of which looked similar to something you might see in a human laboratory. Others, not so much.[break][break]

As the group began to search, there was one such machine that caught his eye. It looked familiar, though Barnaby couldn't place it right away. Wondering what it was for, he pressed what he thought was the power button...[break][break]

Suddenly, Zev Harcourt's ROTOM was stripped of its light, the energy having been vacuumed into whatever machine Barnaby had just brought to life.[break][break]

Seeing this, the admin immediately pressed the button again, turning off the device.[break][break]

"Is your Pokémon alright, Zev?" There was some concern in Barnaby's voice, but not much. The loss of a tool was more so an annoyance than a tragedy.

Barnaby took the rocks in hand, prompting his AZUMARILL to swim away happily, probably to look for more. Once she was gone he immediately let them fall from his fingertips. He was here for useful items, not inconsequential trinkets.[break][break]

In that vein, Barnaby continued through the kelp forest, taking one last lap around for anything he might have missed.[break][break]

RECEIVE A VISION OF THE FUTURE

They materialized into XATU's domain and, immediately, Barnaby internally groaned. This was by far one of his least favorite simulations. [break][break]

In his last iteration, he'd remembered something long-repressed from his childhood. The repercussions of that were still nagging at him to this day. He hoped there wouldn't be a repeat of that situation again.[break][break]

"Have you received a vision from Xatu before, Nomi?" Barnaby asked.[break][break]

"I've seen both past and future occurrences. I wonder what it will bestow on us today."[break][break]

As if in response, the Pokémon's eyes began to glow and Barnaby immediately felt a pressure on his conscience. [break][break]

The images were incoherent: flashes of black and white, innumerable bodies swirling around a pixelated space, and a small, faceless woman at the center of it all.

This route played out much as the other did. They were mirrored, with Barnaby receiving the Dark Stone rather than the Light stone this time around.[break][break]

Just as before, he palmed the gem in his hand, looking it over for imperfections — of which he found none.[break][break]

He'd hand it over to Zev Harcourt, too, if the Beast desired his own inspection. Once he was satisfied, the pair would exit the tower and return to their reality once again.

"Thief! That's the one I was going for." Barnaby exclaimed through a friendly laugh.[break][break]

Cillian had beat him to the brightly-colored, striped bumper car with just a few seconds to spare. Everyone knew that the yellow ones were always the fastest! Damn. That meant he had to settle for the ugly MARGIKARP-themed car.[break][break]

Not letting this development deter him, Barnaby hopped in and slammed his foot on the gas. Immediately, it was obvious the two ROCKETs were taking the game a lot more seriously than the literal children around them. [break][break]

When they both crashed into the wall, Barnaby frantically spun his wheel, trying to right himself and get the upper hand. In the end he narrowly pulled ahead![break][break]

BARNABY FINCH left the course with a small LUGIA plushie of all things. Something to remember his slim victory over Cillian Quinn.[break][break]

"You feeling one more game before we head out? Or we could watch one of the performances if you prefer something more chill."

A week had passed since Barnaby had visited Caleb Harcourt.[break][break]

In that time, he'd been left in complete isolation. Meals, meager as they were, had been slid through a small slot at the bottom of the cell door. The ranger was expected to return the used tray there when finished, or endure the psychic punishment dealt by the only other living thing in the room — Barnaby's ALAKAZAM.[break][break]

Nothing else but stark white walls kept Caleb company. He was left alone, chained and collared, to dwell on his time in ROCKET custody.[break][break]

Until one day, without warning, BARNABY FINCH came to check on his guest. When he entered, however, it was without uttering a word — the two men made the briefest eye contact before Barnaby signaled for his ALAKAZAM to HYPNOTIZE Caleb.[break][break]

When he awoke he'd find himself bound to the single ladderback metal chair in the room. Naked, the red rope dug into his skin, causing it to blush a beautiful, enticing shade of pink.[break][break]

"Wake up." Barnaby beckoned, his voice suddenly sounding so close to Caleb's ear. As he spoke, the ranger would feel something cold and metallic tapping his cheek, goading him to consciousness.[break][break]

When a lull in the conversation presented itself, Barnaby would first direct his attention to Naomi Sato and her hesitance concerning Maldacena.[break][break]

"No one can be trusted entirely. Our decisions should be based on measured risks and what can be gained from them."[break][break]

Something Nomi should know well, considering her interest in the UNOWN. [break][break]

"Head Scientist Flint was... skeptical to trust the Unown as well. Do you not share her concerns?" The two scientists had worked together closely, even interrogated Dr. Holo side by side. Yet there was an UNOWN in this very room with them, possibly spying for the DRK Triad, despite Lulu Flint's distrust.[break][break]

"Regardless, they are powerful creatures. Could there be a way to contact Maldacena using the Unown?" Barnaby was unaware of the extent of the UNOWNs' abilities, but perhaps it was possible. A new avenue of research for their science team.[break][break]

Next, Barnaby directed his attention to mint frost, though he talked to the table at large.[break][break]

"The Ruinous Beasts are not the only Legendary Pokémon at risk of falling under League authority. Though Zapdos seems inclined toward Rocket, Moltres is still at large. And we all know who it pledged its patronage to before its rebirth." Stormy Silph had been a major threat to ROCKET's control over Hoenn.[break][break]

"If the RKS Simulation is to be believed, however, the Farhan within it mentioned Moltres' cousin aligning with us, though it was difficult to discern the timeline of the scenario."[break][break]

Lastly, a knowing glance was spared toward Elisabeth Fiorelli. Barnaby did not feel inclined to refute her lies about TAPU FINI. He'd keep that information to himself, for now.

An Incense wasn't a bad find! He stilled needed a few Ice- and Fire-types to add to his collection. This would help lure the few stragglers to him, hopefully.[break][break]

Continuing to search around the base of the kelp stalks, a flash of yellow announced Elaine's return. Signing, Barnaby asked if she'd found anything of interest. The AZUMARILL nodded enthusiastically... and presented him with a few colorful rocks.[break][break]

Not exactly what he was looking for.[break][break]
