When the Cyndaquil finally gets close enough to take the treat directly from her hand, Lia doesn’t reach to pet it in worry that it might get startled and leave. Instead, she simply sits by its side while it eats, a smile illuminating her expression when it chooses to remain with her and sniff her hand as if expecting to find more treats.

It’s then when there’s the familiar sound of flapping wings, and when looking up, perched on a high tree, Lia sees the most adorable pokémon she has ever seen.

Thinking as much feels both like a betrayal to the Cyndaquil by her side and the Comfey resting on her head, but the thought is true nevertheless, and apparently, the Cyndaquil likes the Rowlet as well.
[break][break]
It calls out to it, the Rowlet in turn responding with some more hooting.

”Oh? Are you two friends? I have treats for Rowlet too if they want to come with us.”
[break][break]
As if understanding her, the bird flies down, approaching in a few jumps.

Forget pokéballs, treats are the way to a pokémon’s heart.

You know the typical ranger story of “helped injured pokémon when they were a kid”? Well, despite having grown up right next to Petalburg Woods, Lia had that happen to her only once and it had been a sick Cyndaquil.

At the time, she had done the logical thing and taken it to the pokémon centre (which had been a difficult task, since it kept trying to light its flames). But, that same Cyndaquil had later on grown to become her beloved Typhlosion, and she had loved the species since.

That being the case, when seeing a brown Cyndaquil crossing the path ahead, she can’t help but smile, fond memories resurfacing as she cautiously approaches the pokémon which was known to usually be rather shy. Kneeling down near it, she offers it a few treats, hoping that maybe it’ll decide to come closer…

As it turns out, apparently the security guards at Lilycove’s department store did a really poor job at making sure no wild pokémon broke into the building and caused trouble for their customers. She had been there by coincidence during the holidays when a Trapinch had nested in the vents, but apparently this time they had at least learned one lesson and decided to call the local rangers once trouble first showed itself.

Could that be called a silver lining?

”Wait…Caterpie?”

Once arriving at the scene and being told what was going on, she couldn’t help the shock in her voice despite her best efforts, because Caterpie were rarely the sort of pokémon that caused trouble like this, and the phrase ’giant Caterpie at the furniture store’ sure wasn’t one she heard every day.

”I’ll… go look for them…”

Since apparently the security guards hadn’t even kept track of the pokémon’s movements.

Maybe it was the ranger in her that couldn’t help but smile when seeing such a cute pokémon, maybe it was just that she happened to be in a good mood that day, but whatever the case, that smile remained upon her lips as she wandered into the cave.

”Yeah! I’m a historian, not a geologist, but they did give me a basic layout of what we’re looking for and it seems like we’re headed towards one of the innermost chambers. It’s why the scientists were a bit worried about recovering the artefacts themselves, especially with all the wild pokémon in the area.”

Explanations came easily enough, her Rotom Phone being retrieved from one of her coat’s pockets in order to pull up a map of shoal cave.

”The place we’re headed to is only accessible when the tide is low, so that’s also something to keep in mind.”

With a not-exactly-all-that-wanted-but-still-really-damn-cute Chingling now in her possession, Lia makes a note to be more careful from now on. So, when she happens to run into an Oshawott, she’s actually ready – her Safari Balls resting safely within her pockets where they can’t just fall and roll away. Yet…

”Ow! What the hell?!”

A shell hits her shins again and again and again, the Oshawott apparently not very happy with her presence near its home. She looks down at it, and so does her Comfey, and although Lia usually would be of the mentality of disturbing wild pokémon as little as possible, this one is just asking for it, isn’t it?

”Lei. Petal Dance.”

A shower of yellow and white petals surrounds them, a breeze directing them towards the Oshawott. The pokémon desperately tries to run away, and so, it leaves them be after learning its lesson.

It’s a bold plan, but one that if executed properly, is likely to work. They just need to give the Primeape a good and proper scare to make sure they never set foot near this place again.

”Alright! I have just the thing. You may wanna step back!”

Just as Lia says this, she reaches for an Ultra Ball, and it’s from a beam of light that a huge pokémon soon emerges upon the clearing. About eleven metres long, with a serpentine body that seems as if made of golden metals: a shiny Steelix. Understandably so, its presence interrupts the fight between the primates, a single roar from the mighty Iron Snake Pokémon causing them all to turn to look at it.

”Helix! The Primeape! Scare them away!”

Standing her ground, a hand brushes a strand of silver hair away, revealing an adorned earring bearing a keystone. It shines too, and in response to it, its with another roar that the Steelix MEGA EVOLVES – its size increasing as its attention turns towards the Primeape.

There's not even a need for Helix to attack, the Primeape already fleeing the scene when realizing how outmatched they are.

She would thank him properly and bid him farewell, but she soon finds herself all too caught up in discussing what should be done about the Trapinch with the mall’s security staff. Releasing it into Ranger HQ’s custody in case someone might come looking for it? It makes sense, and she’s about to suggest as much when an all too familiar and all too disliked tune begins to play…

Lia likes Christmas and she likes holiday music, but out of all songs, why does it always have to be this one?

Burrowing in the ground, the Trapinch seems to share her sentiment, and a sigh is quickly followed by a chuckle as she crouches down by the pokémon’s side.

”Aw, bud… How about we take you somewhere where they don’t play music like that?”

She too would welcome a chance to escape the Christmas-themed hellish sound.

The utter sense of helplessness that comes from not even being able to watch their pokémon take care of this whole “garland thief nesting in the vents” situation is not welcomed, and as they stand there waiting for long minutes, her brows furrow. Even less welcomed are the concerning sounds that soon come from the vent, but soon enough, Adrian’s Caterpie comes out, pulling along a Trapinch on whose back her Emolga stands – as if it had NUZZLED the Ant Pit Pokémon into paralysis.

Momo jumps off the Trapinch’s back, gliding onto her shoulder, and once everything has settled down, she can’t help but find herself smiling at the brave Caterpie and its owner.

”That was amazing, great job! Can’t believe it was a Trapinch, though… My best guess is it must have belonged to someone or that it came here all the way from the beach. And a shiny one of all things…”

Being a ranger and being instantly liked by all pokémon are two things that don’t always go together, for while some may be natural pokémon charmers, Lia… Lia might as well have her own natural repel, because she does a whole lot of walking while running into zero wild pokémon.

”Lei, isn’t this place supposed to be full of pokémon?” She sighs, exhausted, and just as she raises her complaints, a strange sound comes from nearby, startling her. Ringing bells. ”Holy fuck!”

She’s so surprised that she drops the Safari Ball in her hands, the camo-coloured ball rolling and rolling and rolling until colliding with the metallic body of a poor Chingling that had been minding its own business by a berry bush nearby.

That’s indeed the question, one Lia doesn’t really have a proper answer for. Her Emolga are small enough to fit in the vents and move around just fine, sure, but whatever is in there could likely think of them as a potential meal or something. She’d rather not take that risk.

Adrian’s answer, on the other hand, is a Caterpie.

Still, she can’t just leave a civilian to do all the work, can she? So, it’s out of an Ultra Ball that an Emolga of autumnal colours is released.

”I’ll send one of my Emolga in for support, if worse comes to worst it can probably paralyse whatever is in there. You got that, Momo?”

Amusingly enough, the Emolga salutes Adrian and Lia before heading into the vent too.
