Doesn’t the new year call for changes in someone’s life?

Resolutions, “new year, new me”, and all sentiments of the like.

Lia’s life had been full of changes in the past year: from Slateport to Lilycove, from Historian to Ranger, and then even from trainee to cadet. But, perhaps there’s a need for even more changes, a need to find her true path in order to have the sort of life she’s happy and comfortable with – a life she can be proud of and that makes her feel fulfilled. Perhaps all that starts with a shopping trip.

It seems silly, especially because she has never liked doing things like these, but she makes her way to Lilycove’s shopping center all the same, searching through racks upon racks of clothes and still not picking out anything.

Perhaps this change won’t be as easy as she expected.

In a region composed of so many islands, boats that took Hoennians from one spot to another were no rarity, and while Lia herself usually preferred to fly over the water routes, on this day she decided to give her pokémon a chance to take a break from tasks like these.

Hair as white as snow swayed with the sea’s briny breezy, left to hang loose over her shoulders instead of tied the type of ponytail she’d wear when working. Her clothes also happened to be loose, fashion forever coming second to comfort in the historian’s book.

And leaning against the boat’s gunwale, she’d watch the waters, almost as if expecting something to jump out at any moment.

Pale and perfectly-trimmed brows quirk when he begins to speak about climbing back up the tree, but apparently Pace may have just managed to learn a lesson from his fall. Getting on his Braviary and flying up sounds like a much safer plan.

With a cry of understanding, the bird flies away, and it’s only then that the ranger returns her attention to Elliott and his dogs.

It’s unlikely that he’ll care for a compliment on her part, yet she offers it all the same, those being her final words to him before turning away and walking towards the farm house.

Once again, Lia finds herself rolling her eyes, since Elliott seems to have the full intent of trying to fight her with every word that comes out of his mouth. It’s annoying, but they don’t have time for that right now.

”Just protect the damn Wooloo.”

She raises her bow almost as if she were to shoot him, but the sight in her scope is much different: the bushes and something clearly moving within them.

”Be ready. I’ll lure it out.”

A bubble perfectly centered in the yellow liquid in which it is suspended indicates to her that the bow is levelled, and so, she fires a warning shot.

The arrow flies straight through the air, right next to a growling Mightyena that jumps out as if ready to attack.

Thankfully, her Pidgeot is ready indeed, and the flapping of its powerful wings soon causes a WHIRLWIND to rise, scaring away the Dark type.

Was it alone or are there more?

A perfectly-trimmed eyebrow quirks at Angelo’s comment, forming a platinum arch just as Lia resists the urge to let the pilot know that being a historian is more than just reading books all day, and that a ranger’s duties are most certainly not just poking at pokémon shit in the dirt (even if she’s pretty sure she read about something like that in the handbook they gave her).

There’s no point in giving him more ammunition, and in the end, the sentiment behind his words still isn’t wrong: the fact that it’s a drastic change of lifestyle is undeniable.

”Honestly? Yeah, it–” She too finds herself interrupted as her gaze wanders towards the sight before them. Blue skies, blue seas, and right ahead, an island sitting right between them. ”Oh.”

Why is it that it’s so exciting?

Being to a new place, even if it’s for something as simple as releasing some Castform near a ranger base, feels like an adventure in some way.

While Lia may enjoy flying, she sure isn’t used to planes that land right on the water. But, in a way, that too is exciting to her, and so, a smile creeps upon her face.

Thread summary:
Within the heavy fog that overtakes Petalburg Woods, many mysteries lie. Is Lia being stalked by some creeper like in a scene right out of a True Crime podcast episode? Is angelo vestri being hunted down by one of the same assassins that targeted so many at the Star Soirée? No, it’s all just a terrible misunderstanding that could have had disastrous consequences for either of them. Tension! Drama! Action! Arrows?! Knives?! Dirt?!?! …What’s not to like?

Why is it important?:
While the premise of the thread centres around a misunderstanding, it certainly has huge consequences for Lia and Angelo’s friendship, much of which is to be explored. At the same time, it’s one of the things that causes Lia to reconsider her duties as a ranger and wonder if this is the right path for her.

The thread itself mostly focuses on the action taking place, and honestly, it was really enjoyable and refreshing to get to write something like this. We had a lot of fun and Esuna’s posts are just amazing :chefskiss:

As if a beautiful and perfect gift bow being tugged by a force it is not meant to withstand, she unravels, and that composure and elegance she usually tries to carry herself with fades away to nothingness. With the bow gone, all that’s left is a frayed ribbon: the young woman whose every emotion is so very obvious despite how often she was taught the importance of concealing such things from the world.

She could scream, she could hit Angelo for daring to joke around after everything that just happened, but she exhales all too audibly instead; a strand of silver hair being tugged behind her ear as if this would do anything to fix the mess that her fair locks become after rolling around on the dirt.

”Oh. Apologies if the lack of complexity in my lexicon isn’t to your liking, flyboy.” Golden eyes roll just as sarcasm drips from every word, and it’s the familiar feeling of the Comfey landing atop of her head paired with the sight of Angelo’s Dragapult that causes her to pause. It reminds her of how only a moment ago Lei had been wrapped around Delta’s neck, and the pang of guilt is all too painful to ignore.

What can she even say?

For someone who spent years studying languages, Lia finds herself short of words, but angelo vestri seems to understand something the historian herself often ignores: sometimes there’s no need for words.

A hand on her shoulder, a reassuring squeeze, and when she looks at him, a slight smirk. It washes some of the tension away, and even if she too is in no condition to joke around and laugh, her own lips curl into a faint half-smile.

”Sure, creeper. Let’s get the hell out of here.” She hangs onto him in order to pull herself up, and after brushing off dirt and picking up her bow, the Fletchling is called back to its pokéball in favour of her beloved and ever reliable Pidgeot. Fingers dig into golden feathers then, finding comfort in the pokémon’s warmth.

”Wanna go grab a bite once we’re out of this damn fog? Least I can do after almost sending you home with a brand new eyepatch.” This time, the smirk she gives him is much closer to the usual.

Lia could have hit him. In fact, she probably would have hit him if she didn’t like him so damn much; if they weren’t friends, if he didn’t always hit on her, if he weren’t so damn handsome, cute, and nice. She still gave him a deadpan stare, though, and she still reached up for his cheeks once he was up on his feet – squishing them in a manner that was far from gentle or sweet.
