Is it relief that washes over her? Surprise? Lia knows well Angelo won’t hurt her, she trusts him enough for that, so why is it that she can still feel the thumping beat of her own heart? Adrenaline, perhaps, the remnants of having just thought some weirdo was about to do Arceus-knows-what to her in the woods. The result of having the sharp edge of a knife pressed against her throat...

The audacity, the gall, and the sheer fucking nerve of this guy!

”What?! It’s not my fault you were creeping around out here like… Like a creeper! Arceus’ sake, Angelo, I thought you were some weirdo trying to jump me in the fog or something!”

It’s then when Lia takes a deep breath, and once she does, she realises just how stupid this all sounds. It had been a misunderstanding, a dumb one, and yet one that could have been deadly for either of them. The thought is terrifying to her. So much so that what follows is a nervous laugh, reaching down so her hands rest on her knees while looking at the ground. And, noticing her visible distress, the Comfey finally lets go off the Dragapult in order to come lie atop Lia's head as if a flower crown of delightful and usually relaxing scent.

Later on, she’ll probably blame herself for it all, but right now it’s much easier to just blame it all on nature.

Light-coloured eyebrows furrow, and walking towards him, she reaches up – the golden hues of her gaze now as if molten by raging flame. At first, it looks like she’ll slap him, but her hand closes into a fist in the middle of the trajectory; the punch being one that carries just about all the force that Lia can possibly muster.

Why did a little girl need to hide from the rain in the first place? Why was she under such precarious shelter? Where was her home? Where were her parents? Why wasn’t she more concerned about her own precarious situation?

All of these questions and more crossed Lia’s mind as she dried the girl’s blonde hair, but instead of asking them, she looked down at her, realising that her own priority should be to make sure that her young guest was safe and dry and healthy. It was all she could do for now.

”You’ll be fine, I’ll prepare something to warm you up while you get changed. Oh… I’m Lia, by the way.”

The introduction came with the same smile as before, and when the girl approached the tent along with her Luxray, Lia reached to pet her Typhlosion – nodding for it to stay nearby as well. That way at least Quill could provide some warmth from outside while she prepared the wood for their campfire.

A few Mareep were scared away from what remained of her supplies, and even though the bag of marshmallows had sadly become victim to one of the Wool Pokémon, by the time Eris came out of the tent, Lia sat by a campfire while beginning to prepare them some hot cocoa. The perfect thing to warm them up.

The hood of her onesie had been pulled back, and atop of her head, her Comfey rested – wrapped as if a crown of blooms in yellow and white. Thankfully, it seemed as if the fire’s warmth caused most of the Mareep to calm down.

The advantages of an archer often lay in stealth; in maintaining distance, in being able to line up a good shot, in striking first and giving their opponent no chance to retaliate. Once that’s all gone, someone like Lia – so small despite all the effort and training that it takes to master the art of wielding a bow – can often be helpless. No matter how nimble, no matter how swift, the creeper in the woods is stronger than her.

A yelp escapes her when a foot steps upon her hand, but if there’s fear within her, it finds itself overpowered by her own annoyance. Anger. Angry at her situation, at how helpless she feels, at how much it hurts to have someone step on her, and at how it seems impossible to break free no matter how much she struggles.

”What the fuck?! Let me go!”

He reaches for her collar, and she grabs onto his wrist as if in instinctive response, the nails of a pinky and a thumb digging deep into skin – both fingers being the ones not covered by soft doeskin archery gloves. And then…

Then there’s a voice she recognizes just as something sharp is placed against her neck.

Golden hues look up at her assailant from behind a strand of silver hair, and the features she sees are as familiar as the voice, even if these are not emotions she has seen upon them ever before.

”Flyboy?!”

Angelo.

The creeper in the woods was angelo vestri?!

A bird pokémon showing off its wing size to scare off a potential predator was no rarity, and it was what Lia would have expected when dealing with something like a Toucannon. It should have been what Pace expected as well, especially since he had almost as many bird pokémon as her, but alas, it seemed like the action surprised him…

Thankfully, she had a pokéball ready in fear that something like this might happen, and just as he slipped and cursed in surprised, Lia clicked on the button at the centre of the sphere, calling out a large Ursaring that swiftly caught the Unovan in its fluffy and strong arms, huffing as it looked down at him.

”Thanks, Rin.” It was with a sigh that she gave the large bear’s arm a few pats, her attention then turning towards her fellow ranger. She raised a brow.

Is this what rangers are? Trigger-happy assholes who are desperate for a fight? To be fair, Lia has always cared more about protecting people from pokémon than protecting pokémon themselves, but that’s still part of a ranger’s duty, and is it really right for them to be fighting all these Combee when they’re the ones invading their territory? What happened to conservation? To caring for all pokémon’s well-being?

Sure, they would probably end up getting more honey, but at what cost?

”Dammit, Derek!” Clicking her tongue in annoyance, Lia calls Otto out of his pokéball, the Pidgeot extending his golden wings. A Mega Stone attached to a leather jess shines, matched by the light emitted by the keystone on Lia’s own archery glove.

The mega evolved Pidgeot flies high, an incredibly powerful WHIRLWIND soon causing many of the Combee to flee the scene, while also spreading the SMOKESCREEN.

Lia cares very little for parties and gatherings, and free food serves as a poor lure. Alcohol works much better, sure, but in reality she’s simply here because she feels duty-bound to attend after receiving the message. It would be rude not to accept Laurence Anderson’s invitation, and Lia isn’t a rude person.

If only she were more like Zahra Belsky and could allow herself to simply not care.

It’s the thought of her friend that makes her smile just so faintly, a text being sent as she enters the restaurant:

Once she looks up from her phone, she finds herself recognizing only a few people among many strangers, gold-coloured eyes easily being drawn towards Raziel Beckett’s adorable Meowstic. Naturally, she gives them a small wave in greeting, this time smiling brightly.

”Hey, Kingsman! Salem, you look so cute!”

It’s a nice sight, and it puts hers in a good mood, so much so that she even greets DEREK HOFFMAN when she sees him, offering him a smile too. Hey, Derek.”

But, that’s as far as she’ll go, and instead of engaging in conversation with anyone, Lia finds herself reaching for some food as a distraction. At least she isn’t the only one, because lykaios athanasia also doesn’t seem to be the sort of person who is really into parties. Not like Lia knows him at all, though. Shouldn’t she at least try to talk to someone?

Not one to be outdone, it’s with a FLARE BLITZ that the Talonflame comes rushing down towards the Vespiquen, the Marowak instead staying close to Lia. Weakened by flames, the anger of the queen bee seems to only intensify itself, her buzzing growing louder and louder as she retreats back to the treeline.

But, it’s not over just yet.

”Derek…”

With the smoke now dispersed, the hive answers the call of their queen, soon rising from where they had been hiding among bushes and up in the treetops and coming to her aid. Dozens upon dozens of Combee. Far too many for them to deal with.

Grabbing one of the buckets of honey they have collected, Lia calls back her Marowak, then reaching for the pokéball of her ever-trusted Pidgeot.

Lia can be really selfish at times, and in her selfishness, there’s a part of her that hopes Ana does feel guilty for being well. Why? Simply because things for her have definitely not been well…

Because she has struggled.

Because she has been going through so much all by herself.

When the question is returned, there’s a shrug, leaving all of that unsaid and yet hinting to it in a manner that would be obvious to anyone who knows anything about her:

”It’s been going… I left my job at the museum and moved to Lilycove. I’m joining the rangers.”

A complete change of lifestyle, abandoning the job that had been her dream for all too long... These are not things someone who is well does, are they?

It was nerve wracking for Lia, but Pace? Pace just laughed, and that only made things even more frustrating for his fellow ranger.
