From warm shades to cold ones, the sky turns to twilight, light being stolen away as the sun descends upon the horizon. It’s a nice sight, and for a moment, Lia allows herself to enjoy it as her Pidgeot flies, only being distracted from it when the bird goes lower on its own accord.

”Otto?”

Low. Low enough to reach the tree line and then the road, landing as if there’s something it thinks she definitely needs to see. It flaps its large wings eagerly, urging her to get off, and with a sigh, Lia heeds the warning, frowning as she wonders what the hell is going on.

What she finds when she walks closer to the trees is a Rufflet: injured and clearly unable to fly. She watches it, kneeling down as her Comfey is called out of its pokéball. ”Hey, did you get into a fight?”

It’s likely, considering the nature of the species and the fact that it immediately tries to PECK her despite not having the strength to do so. So, she sighs once more, knowing well what will likely happen if the Rufflet is left there at the mercy of predators during the approaching night time.

”Okay… We’re taking you with us. Lei, use SWEET SCENT to calm it down.”

Once this is done, a Heal Ball is carefully rolled towards the Eaglet Pokémon.

Even if flickering and inconstant, the lights at the end of every Mareep’s tail illuminated the camp much better than the full moon up above. They allowed her to get a clear view of everything that was happening around her; from the way one of the Wool Pokémon chewed into a bag of marshmallows – plastic and all – to the way another one sniffed her compound bow and quiver full of sharp arrows.

”Hey! Hey! Get away from that!” Momentarily distracted by shooting the Mareep away from potential harm, Lia grabbed her bow, keeping it lowered as gold-coloured eyes fell on the small girl once more. What had she said? Not all who wander are lost.

A faint smile tugged at her lips at the thought of the phrase, for Lia would always be a bookworm. ”All that’s gold does not glitter.” Ironic, when said by a woman of golden eyes, who also found herself surrounded by golden lights.

”Did you bring the Mareep here? It’s pretty late.” For the sake of the child, she tried her best to push aside her annoyance at the pokémon’s actions, her attention turning to taking a bag of supplies away from a Mareep and tossing it into her tent along with the bow before zipping it close.

"...Are you allergic to them?"

The sneezing was impossible to miss, after all, but what was a child doing in the middle of the forest with a bunch of Mareep?

The ranger manual sure hadn’t prepared her for this.

While the amount of time Lia had spent wandering through woodlands ever since first becoming a ranger could border on ridiculous, it could also be argued that that’s exactly what her job is supposed to be. She had learned a lot about things like those: about finding her way in nature, about seeing signs she would have never seen before, and about understanding them too. But, experience is the greatest teacher of all, and when it comes to the wide array of strange events that might take place at Hoenn, the bookworm-turned-ranger is nothing but lacking.

Of course she would never expect fog in Petalburg Woods, and while someone else might be alarmed by its presence given everything that had happened recently at the Star Soirée with the mist and the Unown and what not, she’s not. She does find it creepy as fuck, though.

”What the hell…” Even creepier is the way her compass’ arrow doesn’t stop to point towards north, spinning around and around as if this were some sick game that she’s being forced to be a part of. Eyebrows knit in frustration, sighing as she puts it away. Lia doesn’t have the patience for this, that much is obvious. ”Fuckin’ useless.”

Her compound bow is raised next, looking at her surroundings through the sights. A bubble suspended in green liquid rests perfectly centered, indicating the bow is levelled and prepared for a shot when an arrow is readied. ”Keep an eye on things for me, okay?” The Fletchling perched on her shoulder chirps in response, because even when lacking in experience, by now one thing is obvious: there’s something unnatural about all this.

Something is probably causing all this, and she’s going to shoot it for daring to fuck with her the moment she finds it.

With the bow drawn to her anchor point, ready to take a shot, she cautiously steps forward, fallen leaves crunching beneath her boots.

She looks at him, holding on, and as she does there’s the thought of how she could get used to things like these. Used to how comfortable and nice it feels to be in his arms. Used to spending time with him. And, also used to camping… Especially if it's like this.

Is he really glad that she’s here with him? That it isn’t anyone else?

She pushes those intrusive thoughts aside, choosing not to question it.

Lia had not signed up to be a ranger for the thrill of it, nor had she signed up for simple things like these. She had signed up because as chaotic as Hoenn is, the region needs competent rangers, and apparently there’s only a handful of them. Why had civilians been infinitely more useful than them during Groudon’s rampage?

Still, all these simpler things had grown on her ever since first becoming a ranger, and they too could come with their own excitements as well…

Excitements like a very angry Vespiquen, a pokémon that by no means should be underestimated. Which, to be fair, Lia didn’t, because how could she when its PRESSURE could be felt even when they could barely see it through the smoke?

”Mana!” With a spin of the Marowak’s bone, WILL-O-WISPS danced through the air, likely to hit the Vespiquen no matter where it moved to when trying to avoid the flurry of rocks. Meanwhile, the Talonflame took care of dispersing the smoke.

Even if she wishes she didn’t, Lia can’t help but laugh.

”Damn, your pokémon are a lot like you. It’s kind of cute.”

Perhaps the refined Stone palate skipped a generation, because when Lia takes the bottle of whiskey and brings it to her lips, she doesn’t really mind the taste at all. Sure, it burns in the way cheap whiskey always does, and there’s little that could be called delightful about the taste, but that could also be called part of its charm, and in the end, there’s really no discomfort.

”Ha! I regret ever telling you I’m actually a nerd.” A short laugh turns into a grin as the bottle is returned, her gaze falling upon the Ninetales that enjoys the Tamato berry while paying no mind to its heat. Sitting by the ranger’s side, her Marowak still seems grumpy about all this, so in order to make it feel better, Lia calls out its partner…

”You two are impossible.” A chuckle follows, watching as the Marowak settle down and the darker one of them summons a few bright WILL-O-WISPS to fuel the flames of their little campfire. It’s only then when she returns her attention to angelo vestri, smiling.

”Camping every night sounds kind of nice, actually.... I’d say it has grown on me ever since becoming a ranger. Believe it or not, I didn’t get to do much camping as a kid.” Unless counting occasional rich people glamping, which definitely should not be counted. ”The babysitting part might be good too. This is… quite the group.”

Long shadows are cast by trees in the fading light, obscuring her vision when looking at the route from above. If only for a moment, she considers having her Pidgeot land and walking the rest of the way to Rustboro, but thankfully said pokémon has eternally better eyesight than what she does...

A screech on its part alerts her to the presence of a pokémon down below: a large Bibarel that seems to be becoming active now that night will soon fall. She smiles faintly at this, her fingers digging through the soft feathers of the bird’s back.

It really wasn’t fair at all.

How else was she supposed to react when a good-looking guy blatantly said things like those to her? It was to be expected, because this was the way Pace had been since she had first met him, but that still didn’t change the fact that words like those would probably always make her heart race. It made her feel wanted, it made her feel liked, even if she knew well that if Pace held any love for her, it was only that of a friend.

Perhaps that’s exactly why she enjoyed his company so much; because she knew what he wanted, because she knew what to expect, because there was no room left to wonder about if there might be something else. It was a nice change of pace (quite literally, in this case).

’Grow up, Lia, life is not a fairytale. This is the only thing anyone will ever want from you, nothing else.’

This was also something she had learned.

”I wouldn’t have pinched you, but I might just do it now that you brought it up.” A smirk tugged at her lips as she pushed aside all those thoughts that could have easily ruined her mood, and before saying anything else, she allowed herself to gently lean against him. ”Too bad the baby is taking the spot on your lap, hm?~”

Instead of looking at him, she looked at the sand, ever-aware of their actual reasons to be together at this beach on an afternoon like this one.

The beginning of a sunset painted the skies in warm shades as the golden Pidgeot flew past Petalburg Woods and descended upon Route 104, making the end of a long day of work. On its back, the woman held on as she had grown so used to doing after years of flying together, a gloved hand only being raised in order to cover a yawn.

”Mm… We should be near Rustboro soon.”
[break][break]
She had not planned on making a stop at her hometown, honestly, but her mission for the day had taken longer than expected, and as fond as she may have become of camping, nothing quite beat a soft bed, especially not after such a long day.

But, would they make it out of Route 104 before nightfall?

There was once a time when Lia would have envied a girl who could do things like these: who could go out camping in the wilderness all on her own while being no more than a teen. I wouldn’t want to impose.” Her response came with a smile, yet despite her words, her Zebstrika stepped forward without need for a command – drawn by the delightful scent coming from the campfire. At this, Lia couldn’t help but laugh. ”Sorry about that, I guess Strike is hungry.”

Just as she said this, her Decidueye perched itself on a nearby branch, right by the camp.

Even though she’s the one who suggested it, the fact that he actually reaches down and picks her up startles her. Instinctively, she reaches to hold onto his chest, clinging onto the fabric of his ranger jacket until he’s properly holding her. It’s then when she laughs.

Why do her cheeks feel so warm? Why is it that she’s sure she can almost hear her own loud heartbeat?

Looking up at him, Lia smiles, and wrapping her arms around his neck in order to pull herself up just so slightly, she kisses his cheek.

It was the sound that first woke her, and then it was the lights: dozens upon dozens of orbs shining outside her tent as if bright Will-O-Wisps that danced through the air in her small camping ground. In the darkness of the night, she could see them clearly through the bright yellow fabric of the tent, but it was only when she partially unzipped the entrance that this sight being paired with the sound of constant bleating made any sense.

”What the hell....”

Rubbing her eyes to make sure this wasn’t some weird dream, Lia stepped out with a yawn, clad in the Midday Lycanroc onesie she had only been wearing because nights were getting colder and she definitely didn’t expect anyone to see her…

She was proven wrong when noticing that it wasn’t just Mareep that had made it to her camp, but also a little girl riding atop of her Luxray’s back. At that point, Lia could feel her cheeks burning up.

”Oh… Hey… What are you doing here? Are you lost?”

A good ranger would help, right? Even if it was the middle of the night.

If she took the time to think back, Lia would have laughed at how much her life had changed in the past few months. At how she had gone from spending her afternoons reading through towers of books at poorly-lit libraries and carefully curating items for museums to doing things like this; to spending hours sitting at a beach for the sole sake of protecting some newly hatched pokémon.

She hadn’t become a ranger to do this sort of thing, and yet, in truth, she had come to truly enjoy it.

Even when her companions said ridiculous thing.

”Pace.” A light and gentle shove, rolling her eyes, and yet, it was rosy hues that coloured her cheeks in a way that was so very obvious even under fading sunlight. Lia also hadn’t become a ranger to do this sort of thing, but as she had come to learn, they weren’t mutually exclusive. So, she looked at him, gold gaze meeting gold, and an eyebrow quirked as a simple question left her glossy lips:
