Is there any greater motivator than free food? Maybe, but hungry and tired as she is, the thought of free sugar-coated malasadas is exciting enough to get her to try just one last MAGIKARP SPLASH before they head back to the beach.

For some reason, even though Lia doesn’t completely understand it, the way he smiles at her causes a giddying feeling to wash over her. It makes her happy, truly and undoubtedly, and as if a mirrored image, she finds herself smiling as well.

”Thanks, Marshall. You’re really sweet, you know?” She means it, but as she says it, she can feel the heat of a blush rising to her cheeks, and turning away so this won’t be completely obvious, she gently tucks a loose strand of hair behind her ear. Like a nervous habit.

She does understand it, doesn’t she? It’s that she likes him. That much is obvious to her by now, but even though the thought comes easily while looking at the water, it only serves to make her more nervous about being on this boat with him. Why had she thought inviting him to come fishing with her would be a good idea?! It’s like the lamest thing ever.

Reeling in the Wishiwashi serves to distract Lia from all these thoughts, and she does wonder if it's the same one she had caught earlier.

”So… What does the winner get?” Lia asks him then, and when she does, she grins while meeting his gaze. This is a competition, after all. It’s only fair that there’s a prize.

Although, admittedly, she’s mostly just trying to keep herself distracted.

If it weren’t for the fact that she’s too preoccupied with the damn Sharpedo heading straight towards this failure of a surfer, the poor sucker would remind Lia of herself. Yes, she still can’t land a Magikarp Splash either. In that sense, maybe it’s a good thing that there’s a Sharpedo attacking, or she’d probably get a little annoyed when thinking about it. Silver linings can be pretty damn weird, can’t they?

”Juni, protect the surfer.” She commands her Decidueye, and extending its large wings, the owl takes flight. While Lia is busy with actually moving the boat, she watches as a LEAF BLADE hits true, startling the Sharpedo and causing it to turn around. For a single moment, a wave of relief washes over her, thinking that might be enough to scare the aggressive wild pokémon away.

It soon becomes clear that that’s not the case.

It has another target now: a swimmer.

”Hey! Swim this way!” Bow set aside and hands cupping her mouth, Lia calls out to the woman that happens to be not far at all from where the boat is. It’s then that she points towards the fast-moving dorsal fin. ”Sharpedo!”

Here’s a little equation for you: unbreakable dome around Hoenn + Slateport bay suddenly being filled with people thanks to the Splashfest = attracting the attention of hungry Sharpedo that don’t really have anywhere else to go. Among other things, of course. But, Lia is here today because of the Sharpedo.

Apparently, they’re becoming quite the problem, with a couple of attacks having been reported already, and since the rangers are somehow always understaffed, the task had fallen on her to help with patrolling the waters.

She probably makes for quite the sight too, standing on the small motorboat as she is: clad in shorts and a bikini top with her long platinum hair tied into a ponytail. The red armband of a ranger cadet stands out, clashing with her whole attire, and most noticeable of all is perhaps the compound bow in her hands – equipped with no less than five tranquilliser arrows.

Right on the boat’s gunwale, a Decidueye is perched, and just like Lia, it watches the waters. The bird is the one that sees the sharp dorsal fin break through the surface first, and its with a screech that it alerts its trainer. Near where the Sharpedo appears, people are attempting (and failing) to Mantine Surf.

He may be right about her beginner’s luck, but that sure doesn’t stop Lia from pouting just the tiniest bit right there. It only lasts a moment, though, because when watching him pat the Mantine he had just caught as if to reassure it that it's out of harm, she can’t help but smile in that gentle and soft manner that is so typical of her.

”Nah ah. You’ll see, I’m just letting you catch up to keep things interesting.” She teases, as if this were to justify the fry-sized Magikarp she reels in next. It’s a tiny thing, and inevitably, the contrast between it and the huge Barraskewda and Lanturn gets a light laugh out of her. ”Marshall, did you just jinx me?!”

Still smiling, Lia carefully releases the tiny Magikarp from the hook, cupping it in her hands and leaning closer to the water in order to release it. It’s while watching it swim away that she answers his question:

”Uhmm… Well, I’m a historian and I have a ranger licence, but I mostly do work for the Lilycove museum – going to gather artefacts and what not. I used to be assistant curator in Slateport, but I find travelling all over the region and going to all sorts of ruins to be much more fun than just sitting in the museum all day.” She turns to look at him, golden eyes meeting his. ”Bet it sounds totally nerdy, huh?”

The last thing she wants is for Marshall to think she’s boring or something, but to be honest, there’s nothing Lia is more proud of than of her profession. It's important to her.

In a way, she's thankful for these blue shards she's been getting. They're not at all useful, that much is true (that she knows of, at least), but they do appear only under specific circumstances, and historian as Lia is, she knows that one day they may be left as a vestige of the distortions that currently overtake Hoenn. History in the making.

Lia has taken part in competitions ever since she was a kid, but even if that’s the case, she’s sure she could never participate in a contest like this. Getting people’s attention because of her skills is one thing, and getting people’s attention because of her appearance is something completely different.

That’s not the reason why she had made her way to Slateport Beach on this day out of all days, though.

Because, see, a swimsuit contest may not be her thing, but it sure seems to have caught the attention of more than a few of her friends and acquaintances. PENELOPE LIVY had only been there for a round or two, busy as she is, but of course Lia had smiled when seeing her sister from amongst the crowd. She had laughed at angelo vestri’s antics and even recorded a video of his Wingull flock’s attack, which was later sent to him with a simple ’nice.’ She had cheered for skyler dross. She had clapped for luka chêne, Raziel Beckett, Elisabeth Fiorelli, and Cade Atreides despite barely knowing them, and hell, even for DEREK HOFFMAN, who she still kind of hates.

However, when @marshall had first taken to the stage, she had been silent at first, because she had not expected to see him here today. It had been like getting to meet a completely different part of him, but also not really. Since, despite the fact that he somehow seems completely comfortable with modelling, Marshall is still Marshall, and Lia is starting to realise that he’s apparently capable of adding his own personal touch to everything he does.

It had made her smile just as much as it had made her laugh in disbelief, and when the final round comes and the organisers ask for the audience to cheer for their favourite contestants when they take to the stage one final time, it’s without a second thought that she finds herself speaking up:
