Walking around under the sun all day looking for certain specific pokémon while going through the risk of potentially getting terrible tan lines akin to a farmer's tan? No thanks, Percy ain’t about that life!

Reproachful words are met with a teasing question, and while Percy would usually find something like that to be terribly annoying, he simply looks at Pace, his silvery gaze expressing so very little of what he might think about the ranger. There’s a laugh, and to Percy’s own surprise, he finds that he doesn’t dislike the sound, even if it comes followed by even more teasing.

”Why? Do I seem incapable of joking or something?”

In Pace’s defense, Percy definitely doesn’t joke often, especially not with most people. In a way, that sole fact makes him special, but of course Percy would never tell him as much.

It’s easier to just let it all slide; to quietly listen to the other’s words while they wait for their food, the warmth of the fireplace beginning to bring certain rosy hues upon fair skin which paleness not even Hoenn’s tropical climate has been capable of changing.

’Dress up properly,’ Pace says, by which he probably means not in something like a suit, but to be honest, the idea of flying long distances on a pokémon’s back doesn’t sound at all appealing to Percy. He’d rather wear his suit and take a taxi, thank you very much. ”Fond of flying, hm? You seem like the type.”

A sweet scent surrounds him, and the pokémon that floats by in this early morning is no other than a Sinistea. It definitely isn’t what Percy had expected, but in a way, it’s almost as if the stars have aligned, because see, while the journalist may be quite fond of ghost pokémon, he also happens to like tea even more...

In truth, Percy will always be one to prefer tea over coffee and is very particular about the former (let’s blame the Galarian blood running through his veins), but the gesture is appreciated nevertheless, and the caffeine is certainly much needed. ”Thank you.” Cupping the drink in his hands, he relishes in the warmth coming from it, his gaze then once again falling on both Luka and the children.

”She’s not my girlfriend.” Perhaps somewhere in the multiverse there might one day be a wacky alternative reality where that could be the case, but here, in Hoenn, could they even call themselves more than acquaintances? While Ana descends to the bottom of the ditch by way of her Gardevoir’s TELEPORT, a call is made, Percy finding himself thankful that his Rotom phone somehow still has service even this far out into the woods. Watching the woman’s actions, he calmly explains the situation in a few words, a sigh leaving him when he hangs up the phone.

”They should be here soon. How is he looking?”

Composed as he may seem, in all honesty, he’d much rather not look at the athlete himself. It looks like it was a pretty bad fall, but at least Ana seems to know what to do (or, well, what would be logical to do).

Even with the sea so near and with the scent of its brine filling his nostrils at even the slightest breeze, there will always be something deeply nostalgic about walking among trees. Memories of the home left behind so long ago; of Ecruteak and the ancient woods that surround the city.

It’s a nice thought, yet one that sadly finds itself interrupted by an awkward greeting.

Terribly tall as Percy is, he looks down at the stranger, gaze as if looming clouds of storm falling upon him. Does he want something? Why is he talking to him? Oh well, he can’t just ignore it now, can he?

Nearby, a Gothita plays in a pile of leaves, but this is something Percy can actually ignore, no matter how intently his Sableye stares at it.

Too bad there’s no time to answer such questions, because they soon find themselves standing by a ditch. A Dedenne puffs its cheeks, cheek pouch full of air, eagerly pointing towards the dark pit – almost as if it wants them to look down.

When Percy does, he immediately sees why…

There’s the remnants of a bicycle, and a few metres away, there’s also it’s barely conscious rider – lying down and injured after such a dangerous fall. Blood stains the ground.

Holy fuck.

Deep breath. Composure.

”That looks serious. I’ll call emergency services, but they’ll take a while to get here. Can you have your Gardevoir teleport down there? Should we go down there?”

Journalist as he is, asking questions may have just become a cornerstone of Percy’s personality over the years, and yet, even if that’s the case, why is it that it almost sounds like he’s scolding him, no matter how calm the way he stares at him?

But, there’s also the faintest of smiles dancing at his lips, and the way he reaches for the menu and turns his attention to it.

”I was just wondering if you could afford something like that on a ranger’s salary.”
[break][break]
Just a small jab, nothing more. A well-deserved one too.

For the sake of said ranger salary and also for the sake of not having to wait forever for their food, he skips over the more complex dishes that may cost more and take longer to make it to the table, his chosen feast instead being one more modest yet still quite enjoyable.

While ordering, he pays close attention to Pace’s words.

”Oh? Fortree isn’t close at all, taking a taxi back?” The unspoken question does not go unnoticed, of course, and when finally putting the menu down, he meets the ranger’s gaze once more. ”I’m from Johto, but what’s someone from Unova doing all the way in Hoenn?”

Never one to care much for speaking of himself, the conversation is swiftly redirected.

Journalistic integrity is the cornerstone of Percy’s career, after all, no matter how much that has often angered certain people. At least ANA STONE doesn’t seem like the type, but then again, most people aren’t until there’s an article that mentions painful truths about them that they don’t quite like...

Before he can say anything else, her Gardevoir seems to pick up on something and leads the way, leaving them to follow along and push through thick foliage that obscures the path ahead. It’s at that point that Percy makes sure to pick up his Zorua, being well aware of how treacherous the woods can be when stepping away from the most travelled routes.

If anything, as Percy sees it, it’s merely Pace Mahmoud compensating him for pretty much doing his damn job for him back at the farm – the least the ranger could do. Especially considering he had ended up with no scoop and had pretty much wasted the few hours of daylight in this fine afternoon. All because of a lonely Golurk.

Is that the reason why he agreed to come to the café? Because he’s hungry, tired, and wants to at least get something out of this trip to Oldale? Or, is it because of the company?
