[attr="class","samjermain"]Slateport isn’t his beat, but it was, at one point, his home. And that shitty little apartment in the shadow of the city was the first thing he’d ever been able to call his own. It was special to him in its own way-- different than Fortree.

Slateport was also wonderfully unaffected by the weird rifts from hell that currently churned like a parasite in Fortree’s gut. Too much time near the warping and bending of space gave him headaches. The fresh sea air and remarkably normal sounds of gulls, waves, and beach chatter was grounding.

Olí was ducking in and out of the spray while Raya tried to hit her with gentle spouts of water. Memo had a compostable bag hanging behind him, and Scythe ranged over the beach stabbing trash with her… well, with her scythes.

The little Horsea gets distracted by a tiny Igglybuff and her human doing something funky with the sand and Raya, not paying attention, trips over her, whale-tail hitting up a poof of sand over the pink creature when she lands on her back.

“Oh, jeez,” Memo says, trying to sound concerned while biting back laughter. “You okay, Ray-ray?” He looks up to someone close by. “Sorry, we didn’t mean to disturb you.”

Scythe comes up to stand behind him, arm blades covered in crushed pop cans, empty food bags, and plastic in all colors of the rainbow.

[attr="class","wownewmain"]The last meeting of this type didn’t go so great. He willed himself to keep his hackles down, imagining invisible hands on his shoulders.

It seemed silly to willingly walk back into this viper pit, where previously people had belittled his concerns, insulted him, and told him he was being self-centered for worrying about and defending his people. But the responsibility was a new thing for him, and he would be loathe to cast it aside for some dents in his armor.

Last time, he’d been fresh off the horrors of his Cyberspace hell-crawl. Now he was older, wiser, and slightly more tempered.

Last time, he’d slaved making empanadas of seven different flavors over the days prior.

Now he just set his boxes of coffee shop hot cocoa on the food table. Less nervous, more subdued.

He gives ollie morales a small smile and moves to take his seat nearish Laurence Anderson .

“Can we go home now?” he asked, quietly, audible only to Alexei Ivanov; his gaze was drawn down to the fields of fire bursting beneath him, and if he looked too hard, it was Fortree that replaced the scenery of this hellcursed land.

But he swallowed, and drew Nike up next to Lash.

He’s too busy for phone games and so most of this Rondez-voo of Love or whatever goes completely under his radar. But there’s one persistent notification that keeps popping up even when he repeatedly clears it. Eventually, he gives into peer pressure, and almost screams when Alex’s face appears on his screen.

He’s on the couch and he curls his legs up beneath him, chewing thoughtfully on his thumb. Alex is off doing Gym Leader things.

They really got you pegged, he said, sending a screenshot text to his boyfriend for him to see when he’s got a free moment.

“That’s not fair I want to do all the things,” he says, voice an impudent whine, as he settles for his second favorite option:

Shivani didn’t know if being called charming was supposed to be an insult or a real compliment-- but she was good at heart and decided to go with the latter, cocking her head and grinning her thanks.

Memo didn’t really hear the conversation-- it sounded far away. He was too distracted by the horrendous things he was seeing: lumps of meat, folded in impossible ways, humped in corners. Arms with bones jutting out at awkward angles and eyeballs sprouting where they shouldn’t be, reaching as though to claw and grasp at freedom.

He swallowed, hard, and pulled his shirt up over his nose and mouth. The watering in his eyes could easily be mistaken as a natural reaction at the smell in the room. As such, it wasn’t entirely tears.

The world seemed to spin and he distantly realized Shivani was holding him up. He stumbled back, dizzy, shaking his head to clear it. With trembling fingers, he took the object from the scary detective man, and flicked to the camera app.

“This is fucking atrocious.” But he forced himself to peer at the screen and take pictures of every horrible thing, searing them into memory even as he felt woozy: A near skeletal Seviper with two heads, one apparently stitched on; a Golbat with a mouth full of eyes, unseeing, oozing ichor.

Memo stepped in something sticky and winced, willing himself to not look down.

Memo feels like a washcloth that’s been over-rung, creased and pressed and dry. Sleep bubbles at the corners of his vision, carried in on the back of warmth and comfort, but he blinks against it.

“Fantastic,” he manages, distantly realizing Alex has asked him a question. He nuzzles into his boyfriend’s throat. “I love you.” It isn’t very eloquent, but his brain has been heated and simmered past the point of complex sentence production.

“I am fine.”

He enunciated all of the words, struggling a little to put his feet back on the ground. If Alex would just let him stand on his own, then he would see. At the mention of it, he reached up and rubbed his cheek and the corner of his mouth, smearing black ichor on his palm and down over his jawline.

“It’ll pass. It’s… just a side effect.” His voice was getting stronger with each passing moment; his body warmed. His breathing evened.

Alex’s accusations of Shivani made him warm in a different way, as an unfamiliar rise of anger burned through him. He struggled away, pushing off of Alex’s chest to stagger to the ground. On shaky legs, he bent double, then slowly straightened.

“Look,” he said, breathing in to try and collect himself, “look. Shivani is my partner and my friend and that is something that you’re going to have to--,” he swallowed thickly, trying to pick his words carefully, “--understand.” He continued to straighten, half turning towards his boyfriend. “I asked her to help me practice her mega-evolution. I don’t know why it-- does this. But we have to figure it out and learn to control it or else what happened at Littleroot is going to happen again. But she would never hurt me on purpose”

He wiped away a black tear, trying to get his temper under control, the color returning to his face.

“It looks a lot scarier than it is.”
