CJ feels the cool sharpness of the Abra’s claws close part-way around their calf. They swallow hard, and before they can confirm or deny their readiness there’s a fizzing sound and everything blinks away to darkness, then there’s light again. There’s a strange tearing noise that makes CJ think of deleting a piece of terrain in Zoo Tycoon as the tree is-- not uprooted, per say, but simply moved. There’s a perfectly tree-shaped hole in the ground, roots and all, and then a crash as the-- the dimensionally shifted tree expands the earth around it, raising it in giant lumps, carving out new space for it to rest.

Matias stands a few feet away, next to the hole in the ground.

“Well,” CJ says, after a few moments of stunned silence, in the voice of someone who has accepted their fate, “it was worth a shot.”

Having gotten a stern talking to from the Safari Warden about how harsh Kinnick was on their previous trip, CJ had opted to take one of their more chill Pokemon. Literally. The warden gave a nod of approval and let the two of them pass into the Safari Zone once more.

“Just three more Pokemon to get, Legs,”CJ told their Glaceon as they began their hunt.

Just as CJ predicted, things were getting harder. They actually had to use their brain to get past the next challenge, instead of just throwing out a Pokemon and letting things happen.

Gordon was a good enough sport; after gearing up with the protective pads, he wound his leek up like a hockey stick to thwack the Togedemaru, then feinted, and ended up smacking it over the head from behind.

Oh, CJ. What ever am I going to do with CJ. Heavy on heart and sometimes a bit short on brains, CJ is a licensed Pokemon Vet Tech who is currently doing fieldwork to advance in the Pokemon Biology field. Ideally someday they’d be a name for Pokemon Biology, evolution, and conservation, but right now, they’re just trying to make it through the day without being eaten by a shark or giving in to the horrendous manic-depressive beast that lurks in the back of their brain.

CJ tries really hard to take Cefin’s encouragement to heart. They really do-- after all, the professor is the expert, and they’re just the hired hand, essentially. But when they say “Right,” to acknowledge Cefin’s platitudes, it comes out weak and unconvinced.

It’s just fear-- the unavoidable kind one has when trapped in the water with a bunch of hungry sharks.

Still, Cefin takes the lead, and CJ is thankful. It’s nice to have a guiding hand during times like this-- even if CJ was about to put their life on the line for a group of Corsola.

This wasn’t what they had in mind when they signed up to become a wildlife defender.

Cefin’s Vivillion sends a smattering of poison dust down onto the surface of the sea; some of the Sharpedo slice through the purple haze, slowing or turning back in nausea. Some are too deep for the powder to penetrate and get through unaffected.

That was where Iman came in; fearless and ravenous, the eel launched into the swarm of Sharpedo, selecting one to wrap around and shock into submission. She even took a bite out of the creature’s gills, just behind the eye, and a trickle of blood streamed out into the sea. The Sharpedo stalled, stunned in the water, and Iman jumped to the next. The Sharpedo were fast, but lateral movement was not their forte, and Iman was able to wriggle and worm away from their sharp teeth.

But picking off one at a time wasn’t enough; there were still a handful of sharks gunning for that delicious coral.

Kinnick had started to sulk. A whole day of CJ cramping her style and not being appreciative of her methods was beginning to weigh on her. In fact, she was so grumpy, she didn’t even notice the Nidoran creeping up behind them until it chomped her with its sharp rodent teeth.

Kinnick leaped into the air with a pained yowl, sending a discharge of electricity scattering along her sharp fur. The Nidoran got a mouthful of zappage and let go, but not before an irate Kinnick could slam it with two sharp kicks, knocking it completely out. It dug a furrow with the drag of it’s unconscious body.

“O-oops,” CJ said in the quiet after the chaos had passed, “I think I see the warden coming. Let’s go.” They nabbed the Nidoran, and, with Kinnick, made a beeline for the exit.

It looked like the stranger’s Gastly problem was solved when the rogue Leavanny struck the little gas cloud down in a storm of leaves. CJ was about to point this out when an angry Ribombee also tumbled down from the trees in the Leavanny’s fall of leaves, aiming an angry fairy wind in their direction.

CJ yelped and dodged aside; Kinnick yowled and jumped head first into the thing, using agility to dodge the Ribombee’s attack, and snapping the fly-like creature out of the air with a vicious thunder fang. It spat the still-twitching insect out near CJ, who was picking themselves up off the ground from where they’d hit the dirt.

“Sorry about your Gastly,” CJ said, collecting the downed Ribombee and flicking dirt off their elbow in the same motion.

All the things Matias was suggesting sounded at best dangerous and, at worst, liable to cost CJ a limb. Surrounded by the man’s veritable squadron of Treecko, CJ felt very on the spot.

“Well, Ally Switch would mean someone else gets stuck to the dang tree,” CJ pointed out, “and slicing sounds very scary, and frankly, I’m a coward.” A faint smile played over their features. “Teleport might work, though… do you happen to have a ‘mon that knows it?”

Though with CJ’s luck the whole tree would vamoose with them.

The presence of the two rangers is like a beacon to the incoming wild predators, who seem to have realized the humans and their Pokemon counterparts are going to be the ultimate spoiler to their succulent baby turtle meal. CJ imagined there was something to be said about the ecology of wild Pokemon and the interference of humans on the natural world, but they’d worry more about that when there weren’t tiny lives at stake.

CJ exchanges a pained glance with Adriana as the Wingull Kinnick zapified twitches a little, hinting at what little life was still retained in its hollow bones. CJ releases a breath they weren’t sure they were holding, very grateful Adriana didn’t just watch them kill something; especially not when CJ had been the healer on their Ranger team.

Oh, Mt. Pyre; the thought makes CJ suck in a sharp breath. They’re about to ask Adriana how Schooner’s tail is healing up when she warns them they may want to plug their ears; they slam their palms over their ears and count to ten as Fluyt hits the encroaching Pokemon hiding in the brush at the corner of the beach with supersonic-- the very shrill bits that CJ can still hear cause their ears to ring.

“Good idea!” they say when they can hear again. Nearby, Agate is skittering up and down the beach in excitement, from the line of the waves to the nests, waiting for the little Tirtouga to make their way to the water’s edge.

There’s a shrill shriek from the air as a group of about four Corvisquire are coming in hot, unwilling to back down from their seafood dinner.

Finally, they made it to the fifth floor. So far, everything had been pretty simple-- but CJ was an anxious creature at heart, and they had a sneaking suspicion things were only going to get worse from here on out.

They were thankful they didn’t have to fight the blackbelt-- that guy looked tough. His Beartic had a similar intimidating factor, and with a roar, it filled the air with blistering ice.

Oddly enough, CJ sighed pleasantly, and a comfortable smile crept over their face.

“Oh, how I missed the cold,” they said, through shivers. Born and raised in Snowpoint, adjusting to Hoenn’s tropical climes had not been easy.

Likewise, their Glaceon, Deadlegs, sat calmly in the center of the storm, unfazed.
