Danger curled around his words like vines from a rose garden. Barbed in tempting beauty, there was no fighting the way her body leaned into its song. It was instinctual, weaved into her DNA by the very same gods that originally twisted their fates together, bringing food to her fires, forestry to the flame.

"Don't - Don't say that," she shook her head, furious.

That was her hurt to wield, not his. And yet, his words cradled her fingers with such tender care, such brazen love, that there was no helping the outspread of her palm, no resisting the way he pressed the dagger into its center.

She snorted at the mention of illeana reyes.

The laughter barely hid the growing animosity thickening in the air, much less the spears jutting out from the slits of her mask, pointedly directed at his chest. Despite the crawling realization that struck, she hadn't forgotten the sins of his existence— the sins of his partner. Even standing there, breathing well through his nostrils, was a crude example of her failings, a direct slap to the face.

In some ways, he was no different than the chain linked around her neck.

"Don't get it mistaken:" The laughter paused, falling into a silence, "you and I will never be on equal footing. Not even here."

He was a child playing Shakespeare. An empty story doomed to repeat the same failings of the wounded soldier before him. The only impact his tales will bring is that of the bloodshed they contribute to.

At the initial start of his answer, there was this spur of excitement that fired off between her joints, sending her body leaning forward, her ears peeking upward. It was the type of rattling that comes to a child being told of the initial promise of candy. Of anything other than the schoolwork typically awaiting their trip back home.

But like with all things, there was a bitter end awaiting her.

The realization started empty. Lightly widened eyes, a grimace overtaking her face. Most of its effects were left hidden, tucked out of sight by the very masks binding them together.

The voice failed to cease.

Through the wash of violence that extended throughout the prison ward, the voice stretch was never hampered, nor clipped from its power. It plucked from her brain with ease, expert precision making play of the mental lackings of a woman without her boon.

All she could see was that reflection staring back at her. That empty vessel of physical disappointment, molded and prepared for its eventual shattering. Time held no position in her thoughts. With every fling of a body, every crush of a life, she'd reach for the power, leaning into the voice that called, only for her breath to be stolen.

Near the end of the warden's first call of punishment, Penelope's neck had already earned itself a crude purple strike all around. Blood pinched her pale skin, lining it with long stretches of crimson.

"for your failures, you must make one last choice today."

Her fingers squeezed tight, but so did the chain.

AGAIN, the voice roared, IT CAN BE BROKEN, YOU CANNOT. NOT WITH ME.

"both of your wards will be given the same deal. your wards must choose to TRUST or FORSAKE the other ward."

Lifeless, her body remained pressed back into a wall, staring out into the open ward. Only her hands dared to sap from the remaining strength left after so many attempts. This time, the cost was her vision.

ARE YOU REALLY SO WEAK? TRY AGAIN.
[break][break]
Darkness encroached its edge, slow-moving and absolute, no different than the eventual death that finds one lost to hunger.

"vote out loud. speak loud. your masks muffle your annoying voices."

With one last attempt, the councilwoman answered both questions, and her world crumbled because of it.

With the ring of fire acting as a curtain, the giant chasm became a stage of performative feats, both large and small.

Penelope could feel it. She could physically feel the constructs of her role sewing into her skin, washing her blade in baths of black and green. The more she pulled from the pool of power tethered to her, the more the air around her buzzed, pulsating emotions from her chest into the rising humidity. [break][break]

"The visionary. What a pretentious fucking title for a criminal."

It was happening again. The fragments of her humanity teetered off the edge, slipping out of reach. There, in the corner lay a woman crippled by a bullet, and all Penelope could feel was the satisfaction of another criminal biting the dust. Even Gunner Graves's outcry couldn't sway the way her eyes kept tacked onto the VISIONARY'S feeble body.

"If you legitimately gave a shit about Hoenn, we wouldn't have to be meeting this way. Your friend wouldn't have to be over there, dying, and you could actually do something about this shitty hand the universe has given us."

Whatever blood he shed would be worth burying one of Rocket's newest pawns.

But then it happened. With one rainbow of MAGMA, the Lucario was given enough time to mend what was broken, all while destroying what was wholly hers. An overwhelming victory.

The peering eyes of gathered unowns only further solidified this fleeting escape of satisfaction.

"and you know, out of all those matches, I'd always try to do the same thing: get my pawn to the other side of the board."

The atmosphere of cloying envy clogged her lungs like a thick gruel, suffocating, isolating. Mottled with spots of red, once again, like a broken record, the councilwoman leaned into it. Her one and only trump card.The sole thing distinguishing herself from the shadow she used to be.

Allowed the fury to capture her entirety, making daggers out of her fingers, and blades out of her smile. Digging into the wells of magma pooling from around her ankles, she beckoned several spheres of fiery liquid to rise to her fingertips. Then, with one singular squeeze of her hand, they began to spin. Faster and faster, until the hardened pieces spun into star-like shurikens.

She fired, and so did her charizard, blending the molten shurikens with BLAST BURN.

Again, the man started, firing off into the ramblings of a madman. Give it to Penelope to have the luck of being paired with someone so tainted. Ignoring the meat of his response, her attention zeroed in on the tail-end, where the first legitimate shred of intel laid.

Mental warfare was best suited for those bearing worthwhile fortitude. It wasn't for those easily molded by their own misfortunes, or guided by imperceivable whispers of jade beads. Worse of them all, it's especially not for those destroyed by their own fingernails, rebuilt by their ruination.

The longer Penelope spent trapped in that cell, curled up on the cot, the more she could feel her madness pushing further into her skin, clawing for release. Repressed in the anguish of helplessness, even howard slayte garble became muted in time. As though distinguishing it against the drone of squabble and screams required more strength than she had left in her system. As though she'd been gutted and left emptied by their meticulous spears, no different than fish readied for consumption.

When the announcement first barreled into their ward, she barely held the opportunity to open her redden, dried eyes.

Unlike howard slayte, whose body viciously reacted to the distortion of cries that erupted from the volcanic splash of blood and guts, Penelope's remained stilled. Knees obediently pressed into the hunch of her chest. She could feel it - the approach of something primal reaching up from the back of her throat, clutching onto every sense of control.

REACH INTO MY STRENGTH AND FREE YOURSELF FROM THIS!

Even here, even now, the voice was more insistent than ever. It overpowered the performance of cruelty, ringing louder than the bloodcurdling cries. It made her veins shift uncomfortably beneath her skin as instincts fought to try again. To dip into the forbidden power and risk the price associated with it.

DIE HERE, AND NOTHING WILL HAVE CHANGED.

She doesn't even recognize the shuffling of howard slayte's body, nor the horrible stench emanating from the toilet bowl.

His words made her grimace. Like beings made of lead, their weight felt immense in the air, spelling out realities with poetic beauty.

"You're a negative one," she grumbled, her fingers twitching behind the wall of flesh her knees and thighs made. Being reduced down to a candlelight had already begun work on her body and mind. Even conversation was growing increasingly more difficult with time, as every additional second was spent resisting the temptation awaiting her call.

There was no helping the bark of laughter that spat out from her lips, tearing apart the woman of brass bones and empty courage. Who was she to separate an executioner from the screaming judgment awaiting her sword?

But, it only took seconds for her grip to tighten around the charizard's back, as her crowing laughter morphed into one of the forced spurts of sound. Had she been Eva Morales, or illeana reyes, would she still stand strong? Would she still bear her knuckles against the patron of a god? Like gasoline to a flame, the absurdity of the woman's defiance only furthered the councilwoman's resolve.

"I'll take care of the bodyguard!"

"You better not miss," she nodded, her voice still a growl. This bitched deserved a slow, but certain grave. "Charizard, use SUNNY DAY."

Within seconds, the concept of shade became a myth among men. Out from the trees, through branches and leaves, heat roared. It radiated in blistering harmony, calling all fire to rise, and all vapor to evaporate. Even Penelope could feel her own blood singing beneath her skin, both in praise and repugnance.

With one hand raised over the dragon's head, she commanded a bubble of magma to burst right where Naomi Sato laid, then another to her left, then another to her right. Truth be told, she'd already read every report that came from that incident. Every perspective was documented, from start to finish, but without means of answering any of the questions presented, it was left to rot on her desk. Readied for the next break through to come ramming through her doors.

Maybe if her strengths laid anywhere more useful than where they were, she would fight back, and force a method of escape. But they didn't. And all the while that fact plucked at her confidence, sending reminder after reminder of the state she's in, Penelope resorted to the resources at her disposal. [break][break]

There was no quelling the screams that tore from her throat upon waking. The bars, the mask, like a flame being pressed against the walls, confinement only bolstered her innate need to fight back.

And when she would reach for the comfort of Chi-yu's embrace, like an addict reaching for their poison, she would feel it - cold, hard iron pressing into her skin, choking her back into the wall. This happened again and again on repeat, separated only by the shrillish screams lashing out at the warden and his smug gaze. On occasion, she'd even resort to calling out the shadows impressed into the other side of their iron cage.

No voice echoed back.

"Gunner Graves!! paxton concordas!!"

Their voices were exiled from existence, left to only replay in the playground of her memories.

In time, the woman recoiled to the lone cot in the corner of her cell. Choked by the wide-eyed abyss, not even her inner turmoil could break through the ensnarement that crippled her will to scream, her strength to fight. Silence became a veil to wear. A curtain to which her flame could flicker through the night. And it was through that lens she bore witness to the madness taking flight in another helpless shell.

She hadn't even noticed him at first. Too lost in the immediate dangers of blood and iron, his sprawled-out body had blended into the prison's floor. But here he was now, shouting through the bars, only to be forced into submission with a jab to the gut.
