Johanna accepted her words as hard-earned wisdom. She knew it deep down to be the truth and denying it would give her nothing but constant fears of the what-could-be and what-if-she etc. “Stopping is easier said than done, but I will try.” She said as she sent a reassuring smile to Megan.

Alas though a promise was made she was quickly set before her first trial, and she failed at that. Instead hoping Megan would choose the two of them. Luckily the tension she felt from the lingering thoughts of distortions was dissipated when Megan informed her that they probably didn’t manifest with such frequencies and in such proximity.

“Well, if that’s the case.” Johanna nodded with newfound certainty before she waltzed right through the entrance. She was immediately bombarded with a thick wall of food smells. Her mouth began to water, her stomach began to grumble. It was then that she realized she was being a bit rude, now that Megan had let them here. She looked towards Megan, who she assumed followed her inside, and said. “I will let you pick first!“ It was the least she could do now that Megan had been kind enough to lead her here.

As Megan led the two of them, Johanna lost herself in Megan’s words and completely zoned out of her surroundings, focusing instead on trying to acquire some words of wisdom from Megan.

“You have a point, actually you have a lot of good points.” Johanna admitted once she had finished listening to all that Megan had to offer. She had to mull it over, but would definitely consider the Honour Badge as her first option. “I really should stop being so worried about it, but I just really want my first Gym badge to go well.” She admitted. She realized then that Megan was seemingly waiting for her to make the choice of whether to eat here or grab the food on the go.

But so easily would Megan not avoid responsibilities. Johanna looked towards the girl, pondering what she might want, but being unable to figure that out by sheer sight alone made her instead turn to use her words. “So, do you want to eat here or just grab something and go somewhere else?” Since there seemed to be ample enough space she wouldn’t mind eating here but on the other hand, she didn’t feel like being stuck in one place for too long, she couldn’t know if another distortion would pop up!

There was not a clue to be had from the Lilligant, and that made sense. She wouldn’t ruin the fun. So she stepped through and was abruptly caught behind a curtain of moss and vines. It was kind of scary to think about. Johanna didn’t like the thought but acknowledged that maybe she would be caught here for all eternity as a prisoner of the maze. Certainly, it wouldn’t be out of the question for mischievous grass-types to do stuff like that.

Though her attention was moved away from the Grim Darkness of what Grass-types could do, and onto the dandelion spores dancing through the gentle breeze. They drew her forward like moths to the flame. Until she, at last, came to find the Jumpluff that spread them. It offered her a gift, and she accepted gratefully, giving it a small bow in return as well as a “Thank you.”

And then another choice was presented in front of her. There was only one choice to be made. The RIGHT choice. And this could be nothing but right, there was a fifty percent chance of it, right. Anyhow, she walked down the deceptively straight path, leaving behind the Jumpluff in the process.

Arlo was ever so kind. Even when Johanna didn’t exactly hear all the words he spoke through the dizzy mist of alcohol. He offered her a handkerchief right after giving her a small lecture on ignoring your body’s signals. She thankfully took the handkerchief and began to wipe away what traces of her prior trash can occupation. Another sorry “thanks” escaped her as she handed it back, but then it struck her. She didn’t remember having told him her name. “Ar… Arlo, I haven’t told you my name, right?” She didn’t give him much chance to answer. “I’m. I’m Johanna Joy… But, just call me JoJo for short.” Johanna didn’t know if Arlo knew anything about the wealthy families of Hoenn, but she figured there’d be no danger in telling him her full name.

It was then that their conversation moved on to where she lived. “I live in…” She took a small pause just to breathe in a bit of air before she continued. “Ever Grande City.” She looked at Arlo wondering how he would react since that was a fair bit away.

Though it didn’t take long for Arlo to move her attention away from being sorry for herself, and onto something that made her a bit happier. The sight of the bird Pokémon brought a smile to her face, but the grumbles of old man Arlo made her chuckle.

“I LOVE POKÉMON!” Johanna exclaimed a bit too enthusiastically, as she moved into Arlo’s social circle and tried to gently nuzzle the bird upon his head. “Whose a wittle cutie!” Johanna began, soon followed with a. “Yes, you are!” As she continued trying to pet the bird, indiscriminately of whether the Pokémon wanted it or not right now. A quick “Thank’s I..Ap… Appreciate that.” Was muttered in between attempts at petting the cute birdie.

It seemed she had chosen the right path. She nodded thankfully to Roselia as she moved on through the maze. It seemed to grow more flowery with each step she took until she reached a sunlight spot within the Maze where right there in front of her a Lilligant stood. It seemed to hand something to her. “Oh, for me?” Johanna took the present, a bit confused in fact, as she had thought prizes would be handed out at the end. But she wasn’t one to say no though.

“Say, you wouldn’t happen to know which turn is going to be the correct one next time, do you?” Of course, she was given no proper response. She shook her head as she spoke. “Silly question. I am sorry.” And with that, she moved on until she reached the next branching path.

“Well, it worked last time, so why not now?” She mumbled and then continued with an Eeny-meeny-miney-mo. This time hitting right again! Doubt hit her mind, but she knew there was no place for it so forcing herself through uncertain steps, she walked down the RIGHT path.

She jumped at the sound of a voice suddenly speaking. She looked around only then to notice the other girl and her Litten. I suppose that’s my partner? Johanna calmed herself with a deep breath, and composed herself, trying to look cooler and laidback. “Wh… What do you mean haunted… Ghosts aren’t real!” Johanna stated though her voice trembling in its betrayal of her cool facade. “I mean, I know about Ghost-types, but… ACTUAL ghosts aren’t real!”

“And yes, I do have a flashlight.” She quickly turned off the bright screen of a PokéGear and instead fetched the flashlight in her pocket. She turned it on, and an average-sized cone of light beamed out in front of it. She waved it towards the forest to prove its effectiveness. “Do you have a Flashlight or will you be using that Litten of yours as a Torch?” Johanna peered towards the cat who seemed to be relaxed.

“Well, the odds were just right, I suppose,” Johanna said jokingly, a small chuckle escaping her. Yeah, she thought that it was funny. She hadn’t done the math on what the odds were. But she figured they’d be higher since it was some sort of tournament. Either way, their little conversation had taken long enough that they were reaching their destination or so she assumed based on how much Megan began to look around.

Johanna began to look around as well, hoping to see their destination soon. Alas, her nose caught on quicker than her eyes. Megan caught the scent much quicker than Johanna as she made a quick left turn followed by a beeline towards the destination. Johanna was caught off-guard by the sudden turn but quickly made sure she followed.

“Well, when you put it like that. I suppose it can’t hurt to try!” Johanna said the boundless positive energy this woman gave off was slowly seeping into her. She had some good points, and Johanna would have to take them to heart.

“Do you have any recommendations for which Gym I should try first?” Johanna turned her gaze from the woman and onto their path. She tried to remember which Gyms she already knew about but found her memory wanting. What few Gyms she knew was probably closed our under new management from last she looked this information up.

Johanna wasn’t oblivious to the effect her praise had upon Megan. But she just enjoyed the presence of someone who didn’t seem to have expectations of her. Though when Megan said that Johanna could probably reach the same heights if she focused entirely upon her Pokémon Training, the only response she would get was a somber nod. Even if Johanna wanted to, she could never just focus on that, her mother would never let her.

Luckily for her, she had made a wise decision in asking for more details. Johanna looked in wonder upon the shiny badges within the badge case, she had to stop herself from trying to touch them. While she knew they were no more than small trinkets given out as prices for those who participated in the league challenge, they still looked very cool, and the story that Megan told just made it all the better.

Though the mention of a summer tournament did catch her attention. “Summer tournament?” She questioned, clearly having never heard about it. She must have missed that one since she usually stayed up to date on most of such events, either by being out of the region at the time or having some other important thing to do.

“Wow, you’ve done all that in little over a year?” Johanna couldn’t contain her disbelief as she spoke. While she certainly hadn’t been working as hard on being a trainer as she could have, just hearing that Megan had gone that far made her small accomplishments feel insignificant. “As for me. I have been doing Pokémon training for about three years now, though just as a hobby.” She paused mentally checking if it had been three years, and she agreed with herself that it had. And to be honest, she felt nowhere close to ready to face a Gym Leader.

“I do want to take it more seriously, but I just haven’t been able to, mostly because of life getting in the way.” As she spoke, she wondered if she should just go ahead and spill it all out. But as they continued forwards she realized dumping a twenty-minute long monologue on Megan would be inconsiderate of her feelings. She hadn’t signed up for being Johanna’s therapist after all.

And then she felt it. The urge to do it anyway, to spill it out. She wanted to vent all those feelings, though she knew not if it was because she needed to cope with the stress from the Distortion or just general pressure pressing at her mental valve. “So, you said you had defeated some Gyms. Which ones, and how difficult was it?” She quickly moved the conversation on, to make sure she wouldn’t fill the silence with the sound of her voice.

Having Megan call her JoJo had been the right choice. It felt much better to be called that by someone her age, than her actual name. Anyhow, Megan didn’t seem certain about her own family’s history, which was perfectly alright. Johanna figured it didn’t matter much at all, it had merely been a carelessly thrown out comment.

Megan began to recall her Pokémon, though for reasons unknown she allowed the Arcanine to stay out. Johanna didn’t mind. Though it looked weird, its appearance was comforting in a way she couldn’t quite put words on. Maybe it simply was her associating it with safety because of the prior event.

Either way with a pat on the back and a witty comment, Megan informed her that she knew a place. “Oh, I sure hope it is,” Johanna confessed, placing her right hand on her stomach in hopes the mild pressure might quiet down what was a gnawing hunger that seemed to grow with each passing minute. She allowed Megan to lead the way since she knew this area better than she did. And as they walked, Johanna figured she might fill the awkward silence with some conversation. “So, Megan. How long have you been a Pokémon trainer, which I assume you are of course?” Her eyes glanced towards the Arcanine. She figured you didn’t get something as rare as that by being one of those hoity-toity Coordinators.

Johanna’s hand was released. Though with no more purpose to be had, she allowed it to slowly fall to her side where it could rest. “Oh yeah, I think they did it on purpose.” Johanna acknowledged in a joking manner. Her mother had used the nickname from time to time, usually when she wanted to appear casual. But it always felt weird whenever she tried. “And don’t worry, I don’t mind if you want to use it. To be honest I always feel a bit old whenever people call me Johanna.” She chuckled a bit as she then listened to Megan introducing herself.

“That’s a pretty nice name.” Johanna acknowledged. “It sounds very fancy!” Johanna had to admit, compared to her own Megan Whitmore almost came off as royalty. And as they spoke, with the danger being gone, so was the reason for the presence of her Pokémon. So, she retrieved their Pokéballs and placed them back in their proper containers. The Wartortle went without problems, but the Mimikyu wasn’t exactly happy about it.

After a tiny pause in the conversation, Megan made her concerns known to Johanna. She hadn’t expected her to do that, which was painted clearly in her face with surprise. “To be honest. I am a bit shaken after that and…” A sudden pit in her stomach had formed, and the pit growled for it needed sustenance. “Now that you mention it. I am hungry as well. Do you know of someplace nearby that has something edible?” She looked almost hopefully towards Megan since she wasn’t exactly known in the area.
