Despite himself, Calvin can't help but raise a quizzical brow. Yeesh, this guy wasn't messing around, was he? Frustration simmers underneath his skin at the way he's talked down to, reprimanded for having the idea to ask for help getting out of the mountains. He has half a mind to reply with something snarky, sharp words sitting on the tip of his tongue, but he stamps it down. He can be slow on the uptake, he knows, but he has the presence of mind enough to know not to backtalk a guy with a rifle. Even if it's kind of an odd thing to be carrying around... He was under the impression that Pokemon tended to be more effective than guns, but what did he know? Not much.

[break][break]He opens his mouth to apologize once more, before being caught off by the display that the silver-furred Eevee belonging to Shi puts on. Cupcake steps forwards in return, a soft, answering "Vee!" leaving her mouth as she does. Her ribbons sway gently, and she seems interested in what the Eevee is doing, much to Calvin's bewilderment. "Oh..." He says, almost in awe. "Aw, man, I think they like each other...?" At least, that's his best guess as to why his Sylveon would be leaning forward to sniff at the Eevee.

He blinks minutely as she rambles on to him, proposing they walk the route together. It would be pretty hypocritical to get annoyed at it, though, considering he can act much the same way— In fact, he sort of finds it endearing, or at the very least, not much of an issue. He perks up when she asks him about being Ranger, nodding. "Yeah, I'm just a rookie Ranger though, He says earnestly, not shy about his inexperience. Everybody started somewhere, after all. "We can walk together. I'm headed towards Rustboro." He informs her, gesturing with his head towards the other end of the route.

[break][break]When she offers her hand, he is quick to shake it, firmly but careful not to drag on. That was something his parents taught him, even if he never actually met a ton of people... Oh well. "Calvin! Calvin Brenner. Uh, you can call me Cal, though, if y'prefer that." It's a hit or miss on whether or not people actually call him Cal or Calvin, but he gives her the option. "I'm lookin' for Water-type Pokemon, by the way. You out here lookin' for Pokemon too, or...?" He then asks, hoping to make some small talk.

[break][break]...That is, until he's dive-bombed by a pesky Emolga. He startles a bit, not expecting the sudden interruption. "Aw, man, okay, hold on," He says sheepishly, his face red once more at the embarrassment of getting startled by an Emolga of all things— At this rate, he's sure if he was a Pokemon, his ability would be Flame Body— then looks at Streusel. "Streus, c'mon! Dragon Rush!" Ever obedient, his Flapple aims a Dragon Rush at the electric-type, hitting the Emolga square in the body and knocking it down to the ground. Man, he feels kind of bad now. Just like with his Sylveon, he throws a Pokeball, hoping to catch the Emolga quick and heal it up when he's able to get to a Pokemon center.

It wasn't that he was following Shi on purpose, really! Calvin had been sent up on the mountain range for Ranger duties, patrolling the area for anything— For what, he hadn't been told... Or maybe forgot, but he was choosing to believe he just hadn't been told anything specific to watch out for in the first place. But after a while, trudging through the mountains got boring, and when he got bored, he tended to just wander off the beaten path, and... Well, suffice to say, he was sort of lost. He had continued to aimlessly wander, Cupcake at his side, until he had heard a voice, and went to track it down in search of some help getting out of the untamed wilderness.

[break][break]"Sorry, sorry! I just—" He and his Sylveon emerge from the brush, but he cuts himself off and stops in his tracks when he sees the rifle in Shi's hands. Yeesh, this guy must be on edge! Maybe if he recognized the man, or perhaps was a little smarter, he'd recognize that this was not a guy he wanted to be around, but... "Whoa, don't shoot, please— I was just tryin' to find my way out of the mountains, and I heard a voice, so..." He holds his hands up in surrender. "Not lookin' for any trouble, I promise!"

Despite Kyle being adorned in clothes meant for business, Calvin takes the man's explanation of where he might know him at face value, not ever one to poke and prod. After all, it made sense to him. Instead, he glances back at the Mightyena as well, watching them coax the wild Wingull into playing with them... Or so it looked like, anyways. At least the dark-type Pokemon seemed happy. He looks back at the now suddenly bashful Kyle, listening to him explain what was going on with the "weird stuff on Hoenn".

[break][break]The calm before the storm... The article about the dead trainer and her dead Pokemon pops into his head, though he's not sure that's exactly what Kyle means when he says weird stuff, even if that seemed pretty damn weird to him. He fiddles with the draw string of his jacket, mulling the information given to him in his mind. "Huh..." He says, then tacks on, "Well, hopefully it's a good excitin'. The only things I've seen on the news lately have been..." He trails off again, though he's assuming that the other man would be versed himself in the goings-on on the news, if he was truly a public safety worker. It leaves an unpleasant taste in his mouth, and he direly hopes something like what happened didn't become some sort of pattern.

[break][break]He blinks a bit, then goes a bit red with embarrassment. Man, he hadn't even offered his name yet! He hopes he doesn't come across as rude. "Calvin! Calvin Brenner," He says. "You can shorten it to Cal, though, if y'like." He watches another Wingull swoop down towards the baby Tirtouga, which have now started being able to reach the water, and then watches as Cupcake hits it away with a well-timed Fairy Wind. "Oh, they're startin' to reach the water."

Calvin can't help but cringe at the sticky substance that coats his hands, glittering golden in the sunlight that filters through the trees. He had taken on the task with enthusiasm when he had first heard about it, but he almost sort of wishes that he had passed on the assignment. He knew better than to do that, though. Ranger work wasn't glamorous, and this was included in that. Still, he'd much rather be actually eating the honey than slathering it over the bark of the trees lining Route 120 and getting it all over the place. Work was work, though.

[break][break]"Y'good back there?" He calls behind him, glancing over his shoulder. He and Rayne had both been sent out on this job, both of them being newbie Rangers, and it was kind of nice to have somebody to chat with while they do this, even if they only just met. She seemed nice, at least, and he was always up for making new friends! Especially since they would probably be working together more in the future.

He pauses a bit at the question regarding his salary, though shrugs it off lightly. It's definitely not a glamorous or cushy lifestyle that he's living, especially so low on the totem pole as he is, but well... He wouldn't trade it for the world, really. Being able to experience life outside of the family farm, shielded from everybody and everything by his parents, was something he would never give up. "Aw, don't worry 'bout me, Lana, I'm doin' alright," He insists, though he's thankful that the coordinator cares about his health and how he's doing. "Streus' is pretty good at huntin' down stuff for us to eat, and that's enough for me!" He tacks on truthfully. Berries make a good meal, after all. He almost kind of likes being able to live off the land.

[break][break]He fights off a bit of an embarrassed blush when Lana admits to being happier that he's here now— However, the news that Ruslan was doing contests was much more exciting! "Contests? Like the ones Ma used to let me watch, with all the choreography? That's so cool! You're so cool!" He enthuses, immensely proud of his childhood friend and all he's accomplished on his own. "You should tell me next time you do one, I'll get tickets and come watch!" He's never seen a contest before, but he'd like to, to support his friend and also because they look like fun.

[break][break]Calvin is then reminded that they have work to do, and blinks before chuckling a bit sheepishly, raising a hand to scratch at the back of his neck. "Yeah, let's! Okay, um..." He thinks for a moment before nodding, mostly to himself. "Think the daycare worker told me that we'd have to head over to Verdanturf... That's not far! Just have to go through Route 117." He gives another bright grin to the other man, eyes warm with his fondness. "Let's go then, yeah? It's gonna be fun hangin' out again. Just like old times, yeah?" Not exactly, but still! He's pumped.

Calvin hadn't really expected having to deal with a horde of Snorlax and their young today, but here he is. It's honestly kind of a cool sight— When he heard of reports of Snorlax blocking paths, it was usually only one or two at the very max. Why were they all gathering now? He figured it must be because of the abundance of honey and berries for them to snack on, and a lack of territory aggressiveness. Or maybe there truly was something to be said in regards to safety in numbers... Whatever it was, they sure seemed to be happy with their meal.

[break][break]He could relate to gorging oneself, though. He had scarfed down one of his favorite breakfasts, a cheese omelette earlier... Man, just the memory had him salivating. He didn't notice he was lost in daydream until he realized one of them had woken up, fixing him in its sights. Panicked, he tossed a Pokeball, not really sure what else he could do. Good going, Cal.

Streusel notices Faye just a second before she calls out to them, flapping wildly enough to get Calvin's attention as she comes bounding over... Though, not very quickly, given the high heels she's wearing. His eyebrows furrow minutely. He's still not quite used to being flagged down by strangers after the years upon years he spent being isolated from the outside world, but it turns out that a lot of the people populating Hoenn are rather friendly. Or, at least, friendly enough to stop him for chitchat during his travels and duties. He shoves his hands in the pockets of his oversized jacket, turning to face the woman. "Hiya, miss," He calls in greeting, her Espeon stopping at his feet much before she has the chance to fully approach him.

[break][break]As she grows closer to him, he can't help but notice her... Er, well... Everything. She's pretty, with long legs and a tight-fit dress, and he can't help the blush that erupts across his cheeks, heating his skin. It's a side-effect of his naivety, but ever since he struck out on his own, he's noticed that there's also a lot of pretty girls around (and boys, though that one is more tightly guarded to him). How could he have been prepared when his parents had barely allowed him access to media? He internally curses his sheltered upbringing, not for the first time, but for varying different reasons.

[break][break]He averts his viridian gaze away from her, hopefully subtly. "Can I help you? Are you okay?" There is a bit of concern to his voice, mostly because while he isn't dressed in his full Ranger uniform, the wristband sits around his wrist over his jacket and his badge squarely on his chest— What if she was in need of help? He would be a no-good Ranger if he refused to assist her, in that case.
