yuina is enigmatic. speaking in an unfamiliar language, scrawling in her notebook like she has to get something down before the memory evades her — she just seems in her own world, from annalise's observation. maybe it would make more sense to the ranger captain if she knew yuina was quite literally caught between two.[break][break]annalise frowns down at the spot where the phantom had stood as yuina unravels some of the mystery behind them. [break][break]"no, it doesn't," she agrees, scuffing the grass with her shoe like she might uncover some clue beneath the turf. like a viral meme, these phantoms have appeared out of nowhere and started showing up everywhere. [break][break]mew, meanwhile, drifts toward yuina as though coaxed along by a breeze, blinking big, inquisitive eyes at her and her kleavor. normally, its curiosity is satiated by a little bit of scrutiny, but the psychic-type lingers around her. [break][break]"you said this isn't new — but where have you seen it before?" annalise challenges, not unkindly. "because this is the first time we've ever gotten ranger reports on something like this in hoenn, i'm pretty sure."

[break][break]june reaches for her hand and the touch is familiar and grounding. annalise takes a steadying breath and turns back to look at her, but her expression shifts precariously once her gaze finally lands on the delivery girl up close. [break][break]"sootopolis?" she repeats, stuck on the one thing june probably wishes would have been lost to the wind. "were you at sootopolis?"[break][break]but for annalise, the conversation is a bait-and-switch. [break][break]she crouches down in the dirt, eye level with june, and cups her face in hands that are surprisingly strong if she tries to pull away. she leans in close, scrutinizing. years of ranger work give her the strength to pick gwen off the ground and bring her back to bed. she rifles through her mind for some silver bullet answer to give her, but what can she say? her arm is gone. there is no promise, no gentle word, that can bring back what is lost. all she can do is hold her just as tightly, an ephemeral comfort as she's transferred from the floor to the hospital bed, and listen to her despair. [break][break]annalise has been here before, but in gwen's place instead. she knows anything she says is going to sound like bullshit because it had sounded like bullshit to her, once. everyone says life gets easier, but that just feels like a kick in the teeth during the worst day of someone's life. [break][break]"one thing at a time," she says eventually, once gwen has had the opportunity to beat her hurt into the mattress. "all you need to worry about right now is getting better."[break][break]but how can she? she thinks the world is falling apart. [break][break]"sootopolis isn't underwater anymore," she promises.
