the door clicks shut, then her racing thoughts are silenced with a kiss. she had invited him over just to have him here, but something in the close proximity sparks desperation in her. it's familiar. it's becoming a ritual, almost, to let him smother her suffering with something more tender. like the time he had kissed her exhaustion away on his couch, she leans into this distraction like it's the only thing grounding her. [break][break]and maybe it is.[break][break]her fingers tangle into the fabric of his shirt, pulling him impossibly close as she stumbles blindly backwards. it doesn't take long for sea-salted lungs to begin to burn or thoughts to turn muddy, but she thinks she'd rather starve for air than separate herself from him now.[break][break]the back of her legs brush against her bed, finally convincing her to pull away. color returns to her face as she catches her breath, dusting across her cheeks. her free hand reaches up, traces her thumb along his jaw, but her other hand holds him uncompromisingly close. visiting rangers in the hospital is sobering work, but it's her duty as a ranger captain to show support to those who give so much of themselves away to protect and serve the region. there are a few in dewford's hospital. she knows their names, even if she doesn't know their faces. and she knows the familiar cost of their goodness.[break][break]she's on her way to gwen's room when she hears a crash, then a screech. her heart leaps into her throat and she's in the room, kneeling on the floor, before her mind can catch up to movement. [break][break]"you're okay!" [break][break]there's a lump in her throat, gazing down at a girl younger than her, holding the bandaged remains of her arm. she's just a teenager. she should be a teenager, not a soldier. and yet — [break][break]"it's okay, gwendolyn, everything's going to be okay," she murmurs. "here, let's get you back onto the bed."[break][break]but she waits for some semblance of consent from the ranger first, afraid that she might lash out and hurt herself worse if she tries to pick her up without it.

annalise is coming down from the mountainside when june spies her. she has her head bowed and the back of her hand pressed against her nose, waiting for the hollow feeling in her chest to finally abate. she doesn't know why she came here — the dead don't keep a guestbook of visitors, only the living keep score — yet she was compelled to come anyways. to see DEREK HOFFMAN. to find a quiet spot to cry.[break][break]she hears her name. her shoulders jolt, startled out of her reverie by the sound. her head raises, red-rimmed eyes searching for the source. recognition ripples across her face as she spots june sitting by some graves. [break][break]"june?"[break][break]the dirt is freshly turned in that area. further down, out of view, more holes are being dug to accommodate the lost.[break][break]"you're out here too?"[break][break]it's not surprising that she's here, but it is an unfortunate coincidence to be caught sniffling and self-pitying in a place like this.

there's a cracking sound, then the dome rises into the air above them. annalise takes a step away from matias, but she knows she reacted too late to stop melody from seeing them together. the structure that had sheltered them a moment before now hovers overhead like a gavel, awaiting the idol's judgement. [break][break]her gaze shifts from the floating dome, to matias, then to melody. it's apparent she has no excuse prepared by the expression on her face. her alibi evaporates into a guilty look, her hand self-consciously raised to cover her neck. [break][break]"i'm — "[break][break]instead of crushing them beneath the stones (something annalise thinks she would like right about now), a wave of melody's hand sends the dome careening into the ocean. the tide rises, lapping at her shoes. [break][break]" ... sorry, melody," she says at the same time that matias laughs, her apology ending on a bewildered note. she knows melody is an avatar, but she didn't know she has, as matias puts it, super strength.
