a new anomaly has appeared in the region: large, aggressive, glowing pokemon protecting swaths of territory, terrorizing rangers and local wildlife alike. a report of an absol sporting such a description prompts investigation. annalise doesn't know what to expect — she hasn't seen one for herself yet — but she feels like it won't be an easy mission. [break][break]"you're curious about all this too, aren't you?"[break][break]mew drifts beside her, unbothered by the danger that awaits them. it twist through the air, chiming in what annalise imagines is confirmation. she opens her mouth to say something else, to make conversation with a little god that can't say anything back, but the sound of a tree groaning drags her attention away. [break][break]"there it is," she murmurs, awed by the size of the luminescent beast as it moves through the treeline. and then, worryingly, she realizes its aggression is pinned somewhere else. on someone else. her breath hitches but her body auto-pilots, sprinting toward the conflict in fear that a civilian has stumbled into its territory. [break][break]mew flies ahead. with a raised paw, it conjures a bubble around the girl in the clearing, enveloping her and her pokemon in pink. annalise follows up the rear, arriving in time to watch the noble absol's scythe meet the resistance of the psychic bubble around yuina. the blade slides across its surface, but the protection holds until the attack ends.[break][break]"are you okay?" she calls out as the bubble pops. mew claps its paws together, amused by the destruction of its construct.

after sootopolis, annalise returns to work as soon as she's cleared to do so, shortening her time off with the promise that she would stick to menial paperwork filing while she recovers. and she does — if only because she can't even get to her office without needing to stop and catch her breath. a pile of ranger reports wait for her at her desk like a mind-numbing consolation prize for surviving a war. [break][break]nothing.[break][break]the folder is set aside. its contents summarize a ranger's work at sea mauville. most of these, she realizes as she gives the files a cursory flip-through, are pre-war reports from sea mauville, delayed by everything that had come after. [break][break]nothing.[break][break]nothing worth sending up to ollie morales, at least. [break][break]no—[break][break]she stops skimming.[break][break]kyle lopez?[break][break]she sits up in her chair, fanning the report out in front of her on her desk. kyle lopez. at the sea mauville wreckage. but the kyle she's thinking of is dead; the man in this report is probably just unfortunate enough to share his name. she shakes her head, gathering the report into a neat pile, but insidious what if? hope stops her from setting the file aside. annalise remembers the prison in disjointed memories, but she remembers the aura he mentions. the endless, repeating loop in that jail cell, returning her to the same fixed point in time over and over. it's why she attacked jayden cross in the first place — to stop it. [break][break]but her desire to kill him had been righteous, grigori's desire to kill her is not. he gives his explanation in halting details, but the circumstances aren't smoothed away by words alone. if anything, there's something unsettling about him, shadowed in the living room, confessing that he's killed before. her interruption makes the ranger negotiation between paxton and ollie fall apart. solo patrols sound like something the officer would enjoy, but now the offer is as lost as everything down in the dark belly of sea mauville. she examines the hard drive in her hands as he speaks, wondering just how much caffeine they'll need to extract data out of something that's been sitting in water for this long. she doesn't know why she thought she could spend the night alone. [break][break]matias' ranch is in ruins from Shred's visit, so it seemed right to let him go. now, as war replays behind her eyelids, it bothers her that he had let her go, that he had believed in her at all. just as she would be bothered if he had insisted on staying. she hates being treated like she's fragile, yet her anxiety tells her she's one hairline fracture away from shattering.[break][break]her blanket rustles. she sits up, retrieving her phone off of her lamp-lit nightstand. the shadowed corner between her desk and her closet earns a lingering, paranoid stare before she finally convinces herself that declan walsh isn't going to step out of it. she trembles, uselessly, as she looks down and thumbs through her contacts.[break][break]there's no time wasted on a text. she brings her phone to her ear, picking at a fray in her blanket as it rings. as soon as he picks up, she speaks abruptly, desperately, every syllable of her question wobbling unsteadily: [break][break]"can you come over?"
