eventually, it becomes evident that the little creature leading them toward the outskirts of the festival is not a human child. annalise doesn't mind the realization, but it does make her curious about the identity of the pokemon beneath the strange mask. [break][break]it feels like a breach of their tenuous trust to try and lift the mask, so she keeps her hands at her sides, following the pair to the edge of the festival grounds. [break][break]the mood in the simulation seems to shift as ogerpon freezes up, a crack forming along their teal mask. [break][break]she reaches for Greyson Connors 's arm to pull him away, eyes wide as a strange appendage juts out from the fractured mask. [break][break]and then the simulation melts away as the pokemon brandishes their IVY CUDGEL. annalise blinks, slowly coming to terms with reality after being in an augmented one for (what feels like) so long. [break][break]"that was weird," she says flatly, looking up at greyson. "did we, like ... fail? i don't know much about this simulation stuff."

after enough encounters with TOXIC CHAINED pokemon, annalise has some grasp on the parasitic relationship between the toxic chain and their unwilling hosts. she rolls a pokeball into her palm and releases her CERULEDGE to try and sever the chains from the tinkaton swarming area zero. [break][break]amidst slashes of its bitter blade, the ghost-type reacts to the glittering tera around them, its armor crystalizing with FIRE TERA. annalise blinks, bewildered, by the change. she hadn't taken her tera orb out of her pocket, nor had she commanded her ceruledge to terastallize.[break][break]

a console whines as her xurkitree gets thrown into it. the lights flicker overhead as the metal frame collapses beneath the ultra beast's weight. she catches glimpses of her pokemon struggling to find purchase on the machinery, cabled fingers prying for purchase on anything that could bring it back on its feet. [break][break]annalise shifts on the balls of her feet and peers out from behind their cover, watching june sleigh 's gible gobble up every potent THUNDERBOLT thrown its way. [break][break]"hey, nice id— june?"[break][break]june sleigh leaves her side with a "good enough" that makes annalise's heart leap into her throat. before she can get up and chastise her, the delivery woman's pokeball throwing endeavors bear fruit this time. she hears the click of a successful catch as she stands, filling her with relief. [break][break]"can you warn me next time?" she asks with an exasperated huff, but she doesn't appear to be actually upset as she steps out from behind the machinery. recalling her struggling xurkitree, her attention returns to the glowing eye peering at them. it has its gaze pinned on june, revealing none of its alien emotions within. [break][break]the building rumbles. then the eye shuts and pulls back, taking part of the wall with it. annalise watches, confused, as the STAKATAKA flees. [break][break]"i think we might be alone now ... ?" she observes hesitantly, checking the shadowy corners of the room for any more eyes. "we could probably patch that hole there and set up a base here. having a place with working lights to come back to could be pretty useful."

Shred doesn't let go.[break][break]fuck.[break][break]the initial kick that drives him to his knees had been all the fight left in her. the rest is weak scrabbling, prying at the fingers around her throat with none of the ferocity necessary to wrench herself free. with a little more oxygen, she might have thought to call out another pokemon, but she can only think, desperately, not to succumb to the heaviness drawing over her. [break][break]and then he lets go. [break][break]her legs fold underneath her and she collapses on the ground, holding her bruised neck and coughing until her throat feels raw. she looks up, taking needy gasps of air, and glimpses the barrel of a gun as she's seen it countless times before —[break][break]— but it's pointed at june sleigh . [break][break]she tries to get out a breathless warning, but anything that comes out is swallowed up by the ringing sound of a single gunshot. [break][break]"june!"[break][break]all of her fears come to pass in that moment. she can't protect june from this fate any more than she can protect herself. the flash-frozen grass crunches beneath her, but she's too weak to get back on her feet. [break][break]she collapses, hand outstretched for june. the ALTARIANITE on her ring flashes, then she hears the angry screeches and wingbeats of a mega-evolved pokemon wrenching itself away from the grimmsnarl and trying to bear down on its bandaged trainer with its talons and beak.
