annalise is too far gone. too entrenched in her anger to be moved by the wounded look on her friend's face. a tear slips down her cheek, and that stirs the smallest pang of something in her chest, but the feeling is chased away as the hurt in her expression gives way to something sharper. [break][break]anger. anger as familiar and self-destructive as the kind that burns hotly in annalise's veins as june demands she look at the graves. the ranger doesn't move, as still as the cemetery statues watching this argument unfurl from further up on the mountainside. she only sees june, processing each word as they come down on her like a closed fist. [break][break] and then, in the very same heartbeat that june is forming her last, venomous syllable, annalise gives her the reaction she was needling for. she closes the space between them, her fingers balling in june's shirt, and pulls her face close to hers, close enough to see the cold contempt in her eyes. [break][break] gone is the warmth, the softness, the sympathy that has held up their relationship with both hands. it's just june and annalise, strangers again. a correction comes, spearing through the small, hostile distance between: [break][break]"my problems are nothing like yours."[break][break]she shoves her, abruptly and roughly enough to send her sprawling onto the freshly-turned dirt of those she has picked over annalise. [break][break]she, the representative of the monolithic, indifferent league. she, the ranger that saved no one but herself in sootopolis city. she, the girl who would have let the whole city drown to spite a few. [break][break]the argument spins out of her control. june is on her feet, leveling her with her hurt. annalise's fingers curl into her palms at her sides and tension gathers at her brow like an approaching storm. why can't june just agree with her? she's like Greyson Connors. she's like MATIAS SILPH. people who claim to care about her — claim to love her — then fight her at every turn. [break][break]the corner of her mouth twitches. the voice appealing to logic, so quiet in the back of her mind, finally peters out. [break][break]if she's a bad person, then what is left to preserve? "i just hope it's a good reason."[break][break]yet the optimism of her words falls flat as she winces, thinking about all the other anomalies in the region that have appeared — to the detriment of those that live here. [break][break]celebi's sudden appearance offers them welcome reprieve from their concerned theorizing. the two mythical pokemon seem to get along right away, holding onto each other and flying through the air in dizzying patterns. mew looks happy to play with a pokemon its own size, especially one that can keep up with it. [break][break]yuina explains her relationship with celebi, and it resonates with annalise. mew is her ally, though she hesitates to say they are bonded enough to be friends. it would be nice, though, to have a connection like yuina and celebi. to be companions, like annalise and her altaria.[break][break]eventually, once time and trust has strengthened their bond, they will be.[break][break]"mew and i are kinda like that," she says with a little nod. the conversation wanes with the distraction of the two pokemon floating around the clearing until yuina speaks up again, this time with an apology. [break][break]"oh — no, no, you're fine. you were just trying to do your research." her own face softens apologetically, though she isn't wholly sorry about mew doing what it did to protect yuina. "sorry we interrupted you." [break][break]at her introduction, recognition flashes across annalise's face. [break][break]"i mean, we've definitely never been introduced before, but i swear i've heard your name before — you're a ranger, right?" there's something familiar about her name, either from being written in ranger reports or spoken casually by ollie morales. regardless, a smile tugs at the corners of her mouth. "i'm annalise henderson, ranger captain for mauville. i got some reports that these pokemon have been chasing people away in this area so ... that's why we ended up running into each other like this. sorry again."

she can't deny the pang of relief she feels when matias calls the whole expedition off. from her belt, she takes her roaring moon's poke ball and holds it out to recall it. the dragon readjusts its bite on zekrom's arm, but it's swallowed up by red light before it can exact its misplaced revenge on the legendary pokemon. [break][break]they head back. once they land, annalise pats ash gratefully, then slides off its back. compared to fighting zekrom, the trek back to the rift should be simple, but she accidentally kicks a buried celesteela (and catches it before it turns into another headache scenario for them) and then thoughtlessly brushes against a cord just as matias did on their first expedition out here. [break][break]"ah!"[break][break]she snatches her arm away from the wire, holding it protectively against her body. [break][break]"oh no," she whines, sounding distressed. "i'm turning into you." [break][break]it quickly becomes apparent that she's not that hurt and not that distressed. against the grim backdrop of this universe, her mouth quirks playfully. annalise returns to sootopolis city at the persuasion of ollie morales. this charity banquet is good, she knows, and ranger representation is important but her skin crawls even within the protected walls of the morningstar estate. an endless ringing of an alarm bell in the back of her head, the old, scarred parts of her reiterating, over and over, that sootopolis isn't safe. [break][break]but she's here. whether out of duty to ollie or in defiance to the rockets that remain in sootopolis, she's here, hovering around the food as so many others are, looking tense enough to be one shoulder-tap away from jumping out of her skin.[break][break]she scans the cavern, taking note of the people there. her gaze passes over howard slayte, cursory and unwitting in her assessment, then filters through faces until she finds freya morningstar, making her rounds among familiar faces of rangers like Elise Calcifet and silverio delfino.[break][break]lifetimes ago, annalise had assured her that they'd get sootopolis back. it's some consolation to see her now — to see her home.
