[break][break]hitoshi's ceruledge catches hers with a bitter blade, but it tries to retaliate with its own. a dance, a give and take, a deadlock — a monotony that annalise breaks up as she raises her arm, pink energy gathering in her palm, extending past her fingertips. a dagger in its own merit, but also an acceptance.[break][break]"fine."[break][break]the psycho cut is thrown, shoulder twisting with the follow through.

[break][break]"ollie!"[break][break]her hand snaps out to try and stop him, but his momentum is already propelling him across the grass toward the trap laid out ahead. she follows after, but her eyes are everywhere but on the head ranger in front of her. she's scanning the canopy ahead, she's turning her head on a swivel in search of something unperceivable. [break][break]"mew — protect him!"[break][break]the air above him warps as the psychic-type sheds its invisibility. its large eyes flash, but no attack follows. instead, it withholds, waiting for the decisive moment to strike or defend.

a wave of lightheadedness passes through her, fogging her mind. her blood is warm against strangely cold fingers, but only the pallid look on her face gives away her fragile state. she draws a stuttered breath, steeling herself for the remainder of the fight. just a couple more minutes, she tells herself. that's all we need.[break][break]her ceruledge, meanwhile, struggles against the uncompromising silhouette of the hisuian arcanine. its sword clangs against its body, but the retaliation drives the ghost-type down into the asphalt. cement crunches, metal whines, and the damaged armor of her ceruledge cuts a shadow against the wall with the fading sparks of the wild charge.[break][break]it lays there, disoriented, then falls back into inborn strategy. a shadowy portal begins to unfurl beneath it, slower than usual, threatening to swallow the ghost-type and spit it out in a phantom force in a different direction. [break][break]and as hitoshi takes a knee, annalise's shadow passes over him. she swiftly takes the place of omen's umbral attack, raising a leg to try and kick him against the wall and stall his attempt to reach for another ball.[break][break]"stay down," she snarls. [break][break]"fuck off, weakest beast. and get a better fucking title while you're at it!"[break][break]her ceruledge feeds off the rage moving through their connection like electricity through a circuit. it waltzes step-for-step with the other knight, following its movements with keen, appraising eyes. as the shadow claw reaches out, the ceruledge lunges backwards into a phantom force portal that swirls shut behind it. another portal opens up on the other side of hitoshi's pokemon and her ceruledge reappears, sword brandished to strike.

annalise turns sharply on her heel, following the sound of his voice even though she can't pinpoint him through the trees. the rejection comes as anticipated — rockets never give ground to demands. it had been for her, mostly. she's a cornered animal trying to appear larger than she really is. she's a girl trying to hold onto belligerent anger so she can ignore the self-preserving fear that hums through her. [break][break]it becomes a herculean task once he steps into view. her shoulders stiffen, unconsciously preparing herself for more conflict — but he cuts her with his words instead. he knows her. he knows where she works. the realization that she's been perceived comes with the unsettling drumbeat thought that she is not safe. [break][break]this no-name dog finally stirs something in her. [break][break] the two ceruledge clash, bitter blade against bitter blade. hers is a bulwark, noiselessly sizing up hitoshi and his pokemon for itself with the defensive strike. vampiric flames lick against its armor, but it pushes through the pain to try and thrust the other ceruledge back. [break][break]"you're wrong," she lies with less assertion than usual. "did you even try to look me up?"[break][break]she feels her ceruledge's determination in her own veins, its power precariously within her grasp. she needs only to reach out and borrow it. annalise holds onto her anger with a white-knuckled grip as june rises. she can't afford to falter now, to let doubt suffuse through the hollowness inside of her. a muscle in her jaw flexes as the silence is broken, steeling herself for a fight that never comes. her expression remains protectively flinty because anything else invites vulnerability, but her brows knit ever so slightly. [break][break] "i-i'm not—" comes the forceful yet shaky objection at being called a doormat, but her voice falls away as june continues. an offer, an echo of what howard slayte had said to june in the ultra plant: come find me. annalise shakes her head slightly, spurning the proposal. [break][break]"that won't happen."[break][break]it's just blustering against june's back as she turns toward the row of graves. it's just a defense mechanism against a self-inflicted wound. her eyes follow a vigilant path along the path as june walks away, pinned against her until she disappears out of view. silence falls over mt. pyre, broken up only by the ragged sound of her breathing. [break][break]her anger recedes, and what remains is the dawning realization that she has burned everything to the ground. it's a tailspin loss of control. it's hyperventilated panic and what the fuck did i just do? racing thoughts. static prickles her skin as she turns away, swallowing down the bile urge to try and call her back. [break][break]her shadow stirs at her distress, taking the umbral shape of her ceruledge. [break][break]"take me home," she begs. "away. anywhere."[break][break]and she does what comes naturally to her — she runs away. she folds in on herself. she self-immolates until their relationship turns to ash in her mind, until it's just more grief to bury with the rest.
