annalise doesn't feel cocky. she thinks comfortable is a better word for it, maybe. she feels comfortable here, with MATIAS SILPH, in a simulated fight where she knows they aren't actually trying to kill each other. she takes the rest of his critique with minimal pouting, readied for it by the preceding gentle pat on the shoulder. [break][break]she's acutely aware of something against her skin, but it isn't him this time. she lets him guide her hands into place, but it isn't necessary anymore. she knows where they belong. she knows the steps to throw him over her shoulders, just as she can approximate the spot where he'll land after knocking him down twice before. [break][break]and she knows the flash of silver that appears from within her jacket. she's imagined this with so many rockets, but a split-second of clarity reminds her of the man below her. she doesn't follow through with dragging the blade across his neck, even though she can feel the lingering itch in her fingers. [break][break]she stops holding the handle against his throat and sits up on top of him, chest rising and falling with effort. her eyes wander from his face, looking for his killing blow. [break][break]"careful," she warns, but follows in after her. she feels through the dark, letting the occasional lightning strike outside guide her footsteps. the other woman is already at the control panel, fiddling with levers and switches that could do any manner of things. june had fixed the power plant machinery, so annalise has confidence she can fix the ship, too. [break][break]"i named it licorice." few pieces of annalise's past remain, but the naming convention of her team has survived the weathering. "but i think it'll break something if i bring it back out, so ... "[break][break]from her pocket, her phone appears. she turns the flashlight on and stands out of june's way, holding her phone at an angle to illuminate the panel. [break][break]"of course." she wipes her hand on her clothes again and leans over to smooth his hair. there's tenderness to the gesture, to the caress of his cheek beneath her thumb. it's an affection their relationship has been bereft of, returning in his eleventh hour. [break][break]her smile wavers. she feels a lump forming in her throat, but she doesn't want to burst into tears and scare him. she swallows hard, composes herself without the aid of psychic this time.[break][break]"i know it hurts but you have to stay awake. what did this to you?"[break][break]when she first saw his wounds, she thought he had been gored by a pokemon, but the disarray his pokemon are in makes her suspect it's something else.

[break][break]her ceruledge's uncomfortable warmth prickles against her back as it appears. the living room is growing more cramped by the second, but that discomfort is plucked from her skull before it has the chance to take root. [break][break]"milotic," the command is half-formed as it rolls off her tongue, but the ghost-type seems to understand where words fail. a bubbling portal opens up beneath it, spitting out a pokeball that cracks open once it hits the ground. furniture scrapes against the floor and shelves rattle as the long serpent spills out into the hall. [break][break]her ceruledge slips into shadow as the milotic draws itself up beside annalise. a second AQUA RING is inlaid over the first, slipping beneath the hands pressed firmly against the cut carved along his stomach. then, glowing LIFE DEW, seeping between the cracks of her fingers. swaddled in a fresh uniform, annalise silently follows fezandipiti and the rest of the group as they're led down a different hallway. she looks lost in thought, turning her vision over and over in her mind, committing the details to memory. there is a future where they escape this place. there is a future where she gets revenge. [break][break]everything else is peripheral. her fear, her hunger, the bone-deep fatigue that the hot shower didn't wash away. as long as she has her toxic chain — her fingers rise absentmindedly to the collar looped around her neck — everything will be fine. [break][break]she glances into the side chamber as they pass, catching flashes of megalopolans and painted masks, but they're of no interest to her. they're not in her future. [break][break]her toxic chain drags her back to her cell. she digs her heels in at first, feeling the rising swell of panic in the back of her throat at the sight of the dark room, but then she stumbles and almost gets dragged across the floor, so she stops resisting. [break][break]she shifts her gaze toward THEO BECKETT, then to the mochi provided to them. this time, she needs no prompting to eat. she sits on the cot, each bite slow and deliberate. [break][break]once she's finished, she lays on her back, staring up at the abyssal darkness on the ceiling overhead. her mouth is dry, her eyelids feel heavy, but she doesn't succumb to exhaustion just yet. [break][break]instead, annalise turns her head, scrutinizing the figure of the underboss in the dark. she wants to savor the sight of his shadow curled up on the floor, at least for a moment.

her roommates are all out of the house, but annalise remains in her room, in her bed, laying cramped beside the balled-up shape of her houndoom. a reality show hums from her television, but she's not really paying attention. she rolls on her side, purposefully nudging the hound hogging her bed with her knee, and scrolls through her phone. [break][break]a sudden sound downstairs startles them both.[break][break]no one else is supposed to be home. [break][break]her houndoom reacts faster, leaping over her and sliding across the hardwood towards her closed door, barking up a storm the whole time. she gets up, heart in her throat, and lets her houndoom loose. as she grabs the strap holding her pokeballs, she can hear its territorial fury change into a more anxious, high-pitched sound. [break][break]she comes down. she sees the delphox in her living room, then the blood — too much blood — following along grooves in the woodgrain. [break][break]and then she sees Greyson Connors . [break][break]she wants to scream, but nothing comes out. she doesn't remember crossing the room, but she's kneeling beside him, pale hands wet with his blood. her voice returns, sharp with panic, and she tells her houndoom to shut the fuck up and go upstairs. [break][break]there's blood on her phone, her pokeballs, her pants as she wipes one of her hands on them to check his wrists for a comfey.[break][break]"wake up, greyson!"[break][break]an AQUA RING from her vaporeon spreads over his injuries, but it doesn't feel like enough. she's too afraid to get up, too afraid that if she takes her hand off his abdomen that he'll slip away.
