[break][break]"i feel like you'd remember something like this if you've actually been here before."[break][break]for another heartbeat, she watches him clamber over floating platforms and walls, then she realizes that she should meet him halfway. slow, uncertain steps close the distance between them. even mew, trailing cautiously through the air behind her, is pulled every which way with every disorienting fluctuation of gravity it passes through.[break][break]matias reaches out for annalise. annalise reaches out for matias. as soon as her fingertips make contact, she reels herself in and clings to him in the hopes that they can't get separated if they're holding onto each other. [break][break]"other people got out of here so we should be able to get out of here too ... right?" she tilts her head to look up at him expectantly — because matias always knows how to get out of a bad situation — fully unaware that he's five more steps away from unhelpfully throwing up everywhere. "maybe there's a way out around here somewhere? like another portal?"[break][break]it's a hopeless sort of optimism passed between them. annalise removes a white-knuckled hand from matias to grab mew's paw and bring the psychic-type down into their orbit.

the councilwoman keeps her voice level, but annalise is still taken aback by the order. it's an accusation, an offense, that freya thinks she keeps the company of rocket sympathizers. her mouth thins in an attempt to stop herself from making a face. from nowhere, they appear. annalise draws up short, her breath catching in her throat. she can feel it, almost — the ghost of the pain she had felt in sootopolis, a reprimand from her brain for being so close to them. terror pools in her blue eyes, but then they call her blondie and it's all the flint she needs to spark the embers of anger. it gives her something to hold onto that isn't fear. and she takes it, white-knuckled. [break][break]her eyes narrow, alight with her contempt. it warms through her, thawing fear-frozen limbs. she hears ollie, just barely over her racing thoughts, telling them to fall back. [break][break]fall back? [break][break] her mind falls silent, poring over the kind gesture of warning, the thinly-veiled threat. a muscle flexes in her jaw, betraying her defiance through clenched teeth. she isn't going to let them fall back even if they concede to ollie — she's going to kill them. [break][break] "psychic!"[break][break]mew's eyes glow as its power concentrates. an invisible hand snaps out for fern's ankle to try to drag them down to the electrified ground they stand on.

[break][break] at the mention of mew blending into the background, she reaches her hand up, fingers blindly searching for resistance. they ghost against the psychic-type's cheek and pink bands begin to spread out from beneath her fingertips as the veil is lifted. now in view, mew watches gideon curiously from her shoulder, recognizing him from a previous visit. [break][break]"yeah, i had no idea mew could transform like that beforehand."[break][break]mew pushes off her shoulder and glides over to gideon, appraising him in an inquisitive orbit around his body. [break][break]"i was told it's never transformed into another legendary pokemon before — that it always refused, i guess," hesitation flashes across her face. she doesn't know gideon — she's just making a leap of faith on the esteemed opinion others have of him. the look comes and goes in an instant, chased away by rationality: a dozen people saw it firsthand. it's not a secret. "but it finally did it. in that battle in sootopolis, it transformed into palkia." [break][break]annalise looks at gideon expectantly, as if she's waiting for him to unspool the complicated mystery of why from the paltry knowledge she has.

[break][break]annalise can't consolidate the alternative: that mew knowingly put itself (and the universe, perhaps) in harms way to protect her. why here? why now? why her? something else must have changed.
