her mouth quirks with the barest amusement at Toki Akiyama's surprise. she could've made her arrival a little louder, she supposes, but situational awareness is a useful muscle for a young ranger to train. poachers and rocket members won't give him a noisier warning than swift and sudden oblivion. [break][break]her gaze briefly tracks his noibat as it takes flight from his arm, but his voice drags her attention back to him. he's heard an echo of his explanation in other ranger's.[break][break]"me too."[break][break]personal reasons make an unfortunately powerful motivator. he defers to her and she accepts the responsibility with a nod. it's a refreshing change of pace from dealing with people like june sleigh, who would probably be making her way through the bushes downhill by now.[break][break]"okay, here's the plan: you focus on protecting the wildlife and i'll focus on the arrests. regular poachers will probably run, but rocket poachers might stand their ground against the two of us."[break][break]a couple of twenty-something rangers don't make for intimidating figures. MATIAS SILPH releases her wrist and she's quick to sheath the knife before he moves forward with his lesson. she's always tempered her fighting with instinct and split-second decision, so it's a little funny to her that there's technique to something as base as struggling. [break][break]he directs her legs around his waist. she obliges under the guidance of his hands, hesitation stilting her movement. getting closer to her opponent has never come to mind in a position like this, only desperation to get out from under them. [break][break]but it's not desperation she feels now. he lowers his body against hers, face close enough to exchange a breath between them. their eyes meet, but nothing is said — just a wordless, self-conscious flush of her cheeks before he moves on. [break][break]"yeah. i think so." [break][break]she studies his face like he's brand new to her. and from this perspective, he is. she can feel the residual heat underneath her skin but to acknowledge it any more than she already is is to invite its resurgence. so instead —[break][break]"what now?"[break][break]— she pushes the lesson onward, restless for the part when he's on the bottom again.

[break][break]she can feel her heart pounding against her ribs as the spacecraft begins to lurch. her stomach does a flip as they finally get into the air, her fingers digging into her armrests. [break][break]"i'm okay for now," she peers out the windshield uncertainly. "but i'll — i'll keep that in mind." "hey," comes a quiet voice from behind Toki Akiyama. annalise appears, tendrils of shadows clinging to her body, then dissipating, as she steps out of a PHANTOM FORCE portal. her dragapult manifests from the dark as well, cataloguing the other ranger and his pokemon with a sweeping, apathetic stare. [break][break] "i'm captain annalise henderson," she offers in distracted greeting, glancing his way and then immediately focusing her attention downhill for signs of movement. "you must be ranger akiyama."[break][break] the ghost-type floats lazily toward her side, searching for anything to LOCK ON to. annalise doesn't indulge them in idle conversation with enemies near, but she does ask toki a murmured question eventually:[break][break]"have you ever been sent out to deal with poachers before?"

[break][break]delight warms her features as Grigori Sokolov reveals he's an avid baker. in flashes, she imagines sitting in this living room, sipping coffee and biting into some homemade pastry. while this guy might be a little strange, she thinks he'll be an excellent addition to their household if he's good at baking. [break][break]"we have the basics. i thiiink we have a stand mixer in one of the cabinets but i'm not sure — i'm not much of a baker myself." she shrugs. "you're welcome to use whatever you find. as for allergies, we should be all clear on that."[break][break]she motions for him to follow her down the hallway. it opens up into the kitchen at its end, but she doesn't take him that far. instead, she passes the bathroom, door slightly ajar, and opens the closed door neighboring it. [break][break]"this is your would-be room," she announces, reaching into the threshold to blindly feel for the light switch. light spills in from the window, then suddenly from the ceiling light overhead. it's a sizeable room with a decent enough closet, but it's in a pale and unfurnished state. "you can look around if you want."

annalise dips her chin in acknowledgement as MATIAS SILPH reveals the next lesson. she expects him to flip her, but she hopes he doesn't while she still has a knife in her hand. an arm pins her thigh against his side, then her back hits the dirt. in the brief, sudden transition, all she can think about is the sharp object between them. [break][break]"sorry."[break][break]a glance at her pinned wrist is enough for her to notice the thin red line against his skin. she settles in the dust and tilts her head back to look up at his face, eyes tracing the assuredness of his grin. he's been smiling this whole time, she thinks, but it's only here, from this perspective, that it dawns on her. "[break][break]she looks down between them. she has a hand free and her hips are open — her strategy returns to something familiar. her fingers furl into her palm. she swings her fist at his jaw, leveraged by a pinned arm and the shift of her hip. the punch has no power to it; it's just a demonstration. [break][break]"something like that? and then — i don't know — i'd probably struggle out." [break][break]the corners of her mouth curl knowingly. [break][break]"and a/c is better?" she shakes her head. the two of them have spent enough time together for june to tell she's not actually affronted by what she said. there's no real anger in her face, just played-up offense. "i'm not taking any naming advice from you. knight? a/c? be so for real."[break][break]passively, annalise holds her phone flashlight and watches june get tired of babysitting. another pokemon — one she's never seen before — joins them on the ship. her eyes linger on the magearna watchfully as it struggles to hold onto the xurkitree. [break][break]after some time, the tinkering is rewarded as lights switch on within the ship. annalise looks around with wonder, turning her phone flashlight off now that the spaceship is powered back on. june doesn't let her marvel for very long before telling her to take a seat. [break][break]"have you flown something before?" she moves to sit down, but something on the dashboard grabs her attention. she moves to the front of the ship, squinting at the text. "look at this. it's a log of ... something."[break][break]the text is hard to read, but she discerns it after a moment. "white hair. appeared. said. here origin point? she. searching ... took dark stone."[break][break]her face clouds with worry. the mention of an origin point lingers with her even as she takes her seat, settling like a rock in her stomach. [break][break]"whenever you're ready, captain," she says, the color drained from her voice. [break][break]

in her dreams, annalise knows the desire swirling around in her head isn't real. she finds people in neon-lit streets, some of them familiar and others not, and tells them not to look in the mask, to not believe their toxic chain is salvation. the wellspring mask doesn't show the future. she knows it doesn't.[break][break]but each time, consciousness rushes back in and this certainty crumbles like gravel off a cliffside, plunging her back down into the dark. she wakes up in a panic, sitting up on her cot, fearing fezandipiti has seen the dreams that aren't her own. [break][break]they can't be her own. [break][break]the toxic chain is her only way out of this prison. it promises her escape and whispers revenge each time she looks at THEO BECKETT. he will die. she will be happy. it gets her through days subjected to laughing hour, through beatings endured from the creature she and Greyson Connors saw in rks.[break][break] and then, at the end of each day, she eats and lays on a hard cot and feels her delusions slough off her mind as sleep claims her body. [break][break]each night, she searches for her pokemon. each night, she finds them as she left them a dream before — suspended in a glass display, unresponsive no matter how hard she hits her fists against the glass. this time, she leaves them to venture deeper into the city in search of something that could be of use to them. [break][break]a tower protrudes above bright buildings, giving purpose and direction to her wandering. she finds its base. she finds a pokemon she's never seen before suspended within, unconscious like her pokemon. fingertips touch the glass, eyes searching for vulnerabilities in the casing. she sees none, but she does see someone on the other side of the display.
[break][break]Remiel Calcifet, his figure refracted in the strange fluid between them. in her dreams, her hate is the commanding influence on her mind once more. and yet —[break][break]"calcifet."[break][break]— should she warn him? to better her odds of escape?[break][break]her mouth opens again, but her thoughts muddy. she can't really hear the words as she speaks them, can't tell if she's taunting him for being trapped here or offering him help. just as she comes to understand her dream is disintegrating, she feels tidal wakefulness break over her. [break][break]she shoots upright in her cot, heart hammering as her heretical thoughts blunt against the absoluteness of her toxic chain. tears drip through the bottom of her mask, landing in protectively cupped palms. [break][break]
