If Ruby was going to be stuck at Splashfest, she might as well make the most of it. Not in the same way a lot of the other participants were with making memories and doing as many activities as they could, though (she wouldn't be caught dead in a swimsuit context). When Ruby heard that there were actual valuables hiding in Slateport's seas, she figured it would be a great chance to make some extra money.

[break][break]Maybe even find a souvenir for Jade while she was at it.

[break][break]She rode on Arachne's back out to sea, suited up in a wetsuit and diving gear. Once they'd found a good spot, Arachne dove down. The Araquanid was more used to fresh water than sea water, so she kept her water bubble deployed for the trip.

Ruby's muscles tensed at the Absol's growl, but then the Dark-type bounded up the cliffs and out of sight. Okay, so it was wild. Again, Ruby didn't know if that was better or worse than the alternative.

[break][break]"Yeah, no kidding," Ruby said in response, though her words lacked any kind of laughter.

[break][break]At least Onyx had been smart enough to bring a lock-picking kit when it turned out the door was, understandably, locked. She glanced back at the Stunky hiding shyly behind her legs and sighed through her nose before putting Arachne's Poké Ball back and instead sending out Cerberus. Unlike the shy Stunky, Cerberus boldly stood at Ruby's side, eyes closely watching the door. Yet he quickly sensed that something was wrong. There was an unpleasant smell behind the door that made him growl and lower his stance. Ruby tightened her grip on her bat at that.

[break][break]But rather than immediate danger, the stale, rancid air that met them whispered of death that had already passed over and left them far behind. Ruby reflexively covered the lower half of her face with one hand. Cerberus's growl cut off as he was hit with the stench. The source of the smell was immediately evident: two bloodied corpses in view, their blood having run black.

[break][break]"No fucking wonder they went quiet," Ruby muttered.

[break][break]Cerberus's sense of smell was all but useless with rot flooding the air, but he still had his ears, which twitched in anticipation of some kind of enemy. A set of stairs on the back wall went up to a second floor. Someone had obviously killed these people, but who? And where were they now?

Okay, cool, they were going back to their normal voices. Ruby was used to being secretive, but it seemed excessive in an empty shop. "They're strong, yeah, but I'm not always gonna have 'em out," she said about Skorpios and Grimm. "Especially now that Skorpios is evolved. And the bat's too, what's the word... conspicuous." Though she did feel pride at how Aurelie reacted to just the mention of the bat.

[break][break]She listened as Aurelie described her ideas for a pair of knives for Ruby. Ruby didn't know what "tanto" and "kukri" meant, though the words at least sounded familiar. She liked the descriptions Aurelie was giving, though, and nodded along. The blacksmith almost seemed off in her own little world as she described the serrations on one knife, how one would be used for stabbing and the other for slicing, how they could double as work knives... Not only did she know her stuff, but she was clearly passionate about her work.

[break][break]But then Aurelie's face fell, and she brought up the dome around Hoenn. Ruby frowned. "Hard to miss it, yeah. You'd have to be living under a rock."

[break][break]Well, it turned out that dome was stopping Aurelie from getting more supplies. "Ugh, seriously? After all that, you can't even make them?" And she'd actually been getting excited, too...

[break][break]But Aurelie's little joke actually had Ruby perking back up. The grin returned to her face. "Who says we need a key? Why don't we just break in and, you know, 'borrow' some?"

"Why are you being lazy now?!" Ruby shouted at Delphi. "Come on, you love kicking ass!"

[break][break]The Garchomp shrugged. She loved fighting, sure, but couldn't sense even an ounce of hostility in the Bewear, so what was the point? Besides, this was funny.

[break][break]Traitor, Ruby thought. Johanna wasn't any help, either, apparently unable to stop her own Pokémon from going on its hug rampage. As if on cue, the Bewear sped up. Every footfall pounded in Ruby's ears as the Strong Arm Pokémon came closer, closer... It was hopeless. This was how she was going to die, huh? Snapped like a twig by a powerful hug. What a hell of a way to go.

[break][break]She braced herself when the Bewear inevitably caught up and wrapped its arms around her... yet the hug was surprisingly gentle. There was still a lot of power behind those arms, but it was being restrained to non-bone-breaking levels. Huh. She probably should have expected that from the fact that Johanna was still standing, but every story she'd heard about Bewear warned about their deadly hugs, so she'd been assuming the worst. Right now, it was just embarrassing.

[break][break]"Okay," she said once she'd found her breath again. "You can put me down now."

[break][break]Once it did, Ruby brushed herself off. "We are never talking about this again," she said to Johanna before recalling the snickering Delphi into her Poké Ball. She hoped the dark hid her embarrassed blush.

There wasn't much to look at in Ruby's room. Calling it "sparsely decorated" was being generous when it seemed to be little more than the generic furniture that every dorm seemed to have: a bed, a dresser, a desk and chair, and not much else. Ruby hadn't bothered with decorating. Why should she? This wasn't home, just a place to put her feet up when she was stuck in Sootopolis. All she needed here were some clothes and a bit of entertainment to keep her from going stir-crazy.

[break][break]She closed the door behind Isaac and sat on the edge of her bed, the covers still wrinkled from when she'd been lying on them a moment ago. "You can sit down," she said when she saw Isaac all but melt into one of the walls. "Chair's not gonna bite your ass or anything." If he chose to take the seat, he might notice the rather large book on the desk. It seemed to be some kind of mythology anthology.

[break][break]"You act like I'm gonna spill my life story or something. Why are you asking about this, anyway? You having nightmares?" The question wasn't accusatory or coddling, nor was she making fun of him for it. It was just putting two and two together, something that even Ruby was smart enough to do. Isaac had specifically mentioned Pagliacci, which made Ruby think of his Hypno and its Dream Eater therapy, and with Isaac looking in desperate need of some sleep, it wasn't hard to figure out.

Ruby frowned thoughtfully at Isaac's reasoning. "Yeah, okay, fair." She didn't make a habit of hanging around the scientists as it was, but with Pagliacci, that was especially true. Not only did he never shut up, but something about him was... unnerving. She couldn't put her finger on it, but she also didn't understand what the hell he was talking about half the time, so she was content to file him away as an enigma she never wanted to deal with.

[break][break]The way Isaac smiled bothered Ruby more right now, though. It was obvious that he was trying to be his usual snarky self, but it just didn't work with the whole "hasn't slept in days" look he was pulling right now. It looked wrong, and Ruby found herself hating it more than his usual look.

[break][break]Right on cue, her grip on the door handle tightened when Isaac brought up her reaction to therapy Pokémon. But this time, the "I'm going to kill you" expression didn't come. She was definitely tense, but after a few moments, she couldn't meet Isaac's eyes anymore. Did she even look sad for a moment?

[break][break]Dammit. She couldn't bring herself to lie about this. The easiest way to get rid of Isaac would have been to say they're crap and then slam the door in his face, but she just couldn't do it. Not when she'd seen firsthand how much they actually did help. And not when Isaac looked so pathetic. It'd be punching downward, and that just felt gross.

[break][break]A frustrated sigh escaped her. "I'm not talking about this out in the hallway." She opened her door fully, a silent invitation into her room.

The Speaker looked aghast when Mint called for a Solar Beam. "How dare you use Almighty Groudon's gift for—AHH!" And that was why you got out of the way of an oncoming attack instead of ranting about it. Most of the Solar Beam hit her Camerupt instead of her, but she still had to shield her face from the bright beam and the dirt it dislodged. Ruby, on the other hand, actually listened to Mint's orders and got out of the blast radius, sparing herself and her Pokémon.

[break][break]The Camerupt shrunk back at Cacio's Intimidate-ing glare, giving the Luxray the chance to slip past it and deliver a Crunch to the Speaker herself. She, too, shrieked at the attack, though for a different reason than the other cultists.

[break][break]"Hit it with everything you got!" Ruby shouted to her Pokémon. Arachne hissed and charged the Camerupt with another Liquidation while Delphi opted for a Dragon Rush. The Camerupt roared and tried to counter with Earthquake, but the tremors it sent out were weak, and it soon collapsed in a heap. The energy sustaining its Mega Evolution dissipated, and it transformed back to its original form.

[break][break]The dust settled on the battle. Electrocuted cultists lay scattered on the ground, twitching and groaning if they moved at all. The few left standing were already recalling their Pokémon and running for dear life. The Speaker had fallen to her knees, despair clouding her face.

[break][break]"Almighty Groudon... why have you forsaken me...?"

[break][break]"Probably 'cause you're weak," Ruby said with a shrug. She doubted any of these bozos ever had the "blessing" of Groudon to begin with, but she felt like rubbing salt in the wound. She turned to Mint. "We done here?"

Ruby blinked a few times when she'd gotten a better look at Isaac's intruding face. To be blunt, he looked like shit, like he hadn't had a good night's sleep in years. And he didn't sound much better, either, his opening quip lacking any kind of bite. She stood up straighter and opened the door further to hear him out.

[break][break]And she immediately regretted it when he started going on about that night in the lab. Her usual frown twisted into a grimace as the memories of that (possibly literally) hell clawed their way into her head. "What about it?" she snapped, though her tone was mostly for the sake of shaking off those ugly thoughts.

[break][break]And then Isaac went in a direction that threw Ruby for a couple of loops, and she couldn't hide the brief widening of her eyes. Pagliacci had offered to have his creepy-ass Hypno put them to sleep and Dream Eater that "nightmare" away, but Ruby had shut him the hell down and refused to talk further about it. And now here was Isaac, bringing it back up. Bringing back something that Ruby hated knowing so much about.

Ruby wasn't used to her presence being something to smile about, so seeing Aurelie's broad smile caught her a bit off guard. Yet the Snake Slayer nickname gave her more than enough motivation to wipe away her brief dumbfounded look with a cocky smirk. Aurelie, meanwhile, looked completely comfortable now that she was on her home turf. In the desert, she'd looked like... well, pretty much anyone that Ruby would make fun of for underestimating that environment. But here, she seemed a lot more confident. It was a good look on her.

[break][break]"It's a damn good knife, yeah," Ruby said. "Made the rest of my job smoother. I almost didn't wanna give it back, but I wanted to see what else you could do." She held out the knife handle-first for Aurelie to take back. She'd even bothered to wipe it off when she was done! Wasn't that just thoughtful of her?

[break][break]Ruby glanced around, but the shop was still as empty as it had been when she'd entered. "Something like that, yeah," she said, finding her voice lowering a bit to match Aurelie's tone even though it didn't need to. "I've got a nail bat I use if I really need to send a message, but it's not exactly subtle. Was thinking a good knife or some knuckle dusters for those stealthy jobs."

Ruby could have just kept the knife. After all, Aurelie said Ruby could keep it for as long as she liked. Yet here she was, breaking away from the current of people visiting Lilycove Department Store to get to a small shopping center a few blocks away. The Iron Lady Forge was pretty easy to find, given the cast-metal sign advertising its name above the door. A fancy insignia with A and L sat under the forge's name; Ruby briefly wondered if that was supposed to be Aurelie's first and last initials.

[break][break]She pushed open the door and was greeted with a simple, sparsely furnished shop. One wall was decorated with iron bars in various patterns that Ruby didn't know the names of, but what really caught her eye were the display cases showcasing what the shop had to offer. It wasn't a showy place, but what it did show was impressive. Ruby liked it already.

[break][break]No sign of the woman of the hour, though. Ruby walked up to the front desk and rang the call bell. "Hello?" she called, as if just ringing the bell wasn't enough. "Anyone here?"

Ruby didn't like staying in the sub, not when she had a perfectly good apartment in Mossdeep with her sister. But sometimes, she didn't have a choice, like when she had a string of missions lined up that made going home between them impractical. So here she was, lying in her bed in her tiny little dorm room, talking quietly on her cell phone so no one else would hear.

[break][break]"It's gonna be a few days," she said. "You got enough food?"

[break][break]"Don't worry, I have plenty," Jade said on the other end. "I'll make sure the doors are locked, too."

[break][break]"Attagirl." Ruby grinned. "I'll try to get back as quick as I can. Want me to pick you anything up?"

[break][break]"Mm... I'll think about it. Maybe—"

[break][break]A knock on the door rudely cut in. "Hold on," Ruby said into the phone. She opened her mouth to yell at whichever fuck was interrupting her, but then a familiar voice sounded from the other side. Normally, Isaac would have been free real estate for unleashing her verbal wrath on, but something about him sounded... wrong. Ruby scrunched her eyebrows. "Gotta go; I'll text you," she muttered into the phone before quickly hanging up. She hated doing that to her sister, but she didn't have a choice if she wanted to keep her family life and her Rocket life completely separate.

[break][break]She got out of bed and cracked open the door. "What do you want?" she asked, eyes narrowed suspiciously.

"Yeah?" she whispered back to Isaac. "Why wouldn't...?" The pieces slowly clicked into place. The endless closet didn't actually exist. They were here in the hallway, having been rudely awakened by their Pokémon. And Pagliacci was going on about a gas leak.

[break][break]Okay. So either they had actually almost died and caught a glimpse of Hell, the so-called ghost was royally fucking with them, or they'd somehow had the same gas-induced dream. Ruby wasn't sure which was freakier.

[break][break]"Yes, yes!" Pagliacci's nerdy voice cut in at Isaac's mention of the infirmary. When had he gotten so close? "Gas inhalation can be very dangerous; you two need to get to the medical bay now!" He had the gall—the audacity—to start physically pushing the two in that direction.

[break][break]"I can walk, dammit!" Ruby snapped, slapping his hand away.

[break][break]"Oh, yes, of course," Pagliacci muttered, rubbing his now-sore hand. "But no skipping out on treatment! Go straight to the medical bay and tell them what happened! I'll be there shortly; I've got to make sure the gas hasn't spread."

[break][break]Ruby let his words fade into her ever-growing who-gives-a-fuck fog. "Yeah, yeah," she said dismissively as she followed Isaac. Arachne and Cerberus walked on either side of her, the former ready to catch her if she fell or something.

[break][break]She looked down at whatever Isaac had pulled out of his pocket. It was just a coin, so Ruby didn't give it much thought at first... but then she realized it had no face. And it was etched with "See ya soon!" instead of whatever gibberish they wrote on coins. Isaac threw it into the closet. Ruby never heard it land.

[break][break]"Nope, fuck this," Ruby said. "Put me on all the pain meds and knock me the fuck out." She picked up the pace, ready and eager to get this over with and put tonight behind her like a bad dream. Because that's what it had been, right? Just a bad dream? Ghosts weren't real, after all. They couldn't do shit to her if they didn't exist.

[break][break]She pointedly ignored the feeling of being watched as she walked.
