She can feel the weight of their gaze settle ominously upon her, these ancient sentinels of a lost age. She turns to face them, keenly aware of their judgement. But it isn't fear she feels, or even apprehension: it is affection. In many ways, they are like the Unown - incapable of expressing themselves like the majority of living beings - their shape too foreign, their design too alien. The thought brings her a measure of comfort. The familiar in the unfamiliar.[break][break]
The Unown surge, spiraling around the golems, spelling out their messages with their divine lexicon.[break][break]
"Who has it?"[break][break]
Nomi's purpose over the past year has been diplomacy, and though that era has ended, she can still leverage many of her connections. Perhaps she knows of Regieleki's captor already. Perhaps she can help retrieve it.[break][break]

They've been on the defensive for far too long. She can no longer stomach the unpredictability of her enemies, the ways they seem to pop up in every imaginable corner of Hoenn - including the virtual.[break][break]

Intelligence. Hadn't she always been a creature of knowledge?[break][break]
They weren't without insight. Father Winter was alive, for one. Or rather, a Father Winter was alive - and keen on meddling. He had shown Nomi - and, she had begun to uncover, many others - an alternate reality in which she herself had joined the Triad instead of Rocket. mint frost had formed some kind of...relationship with the man.[break][break]
They did not have many clues, but they had some. She held fast to them, a lifeline for the drowning.[break][break]
"Father Winter has been active. Diomedes - the Unown-D that was once loyal to him - answers to me now. I've left it with mint frost, in hopes that his connection to Father Winter might lead to more detailed intelligence," Nomi explained. "I also know that the Triad can use the RKS Machine to infiltrate our world. They may even have some control over the simulations we encounter in there."[break][break]
Elisabeth's point about Avatars stirred another memory.[break][break]
"One member of the Triad, a white-haired woman - not Holo, the other one - is hunting Yuina Higashi, a League-affiliated woman around my age with..." Her eyes widened as something occurred to her. " - with a connection to Celebi."[break][break]

"As for the girl," she continues, crimson eyes regarding Shred. If he's trying to intimidate them, it isn't working on her. After all, he should know her power. She has two Meltan.[break][break]

The words are right, but the delivery is wrong. The limits of Parker's devotion are being tested. Nomi stomachs it, because what other choice does she have?[break][break]
Fragments of blue crystal begin to shimmer in the air, and Kallistatus glows with a soft, ethereal light. Nomi feels lightheaded, her powers stretched too thin - and now? Now she's going to fight? - but she grits her teeth against the fatigue. If there were ever a time to be strong, now is that time. If there were ever a time to ensure she'd do some good for once, now is that time.[break][break]
Parker will live. The Unown hum to the rhythm of grief, but not mourning. Some things are just sad.[break][break]
The portal closes, and Nomi stares down at the puddle of blood soaking into the grass, expression blank. She sleepwalks forward, padding softly across tortured ground, then kneels. She presses her palm to the earth until it's stained red.[break][break]
She doesn't cry. She won't allow herself the catharsis. A hardened heart is the only shield she has now.[break][break]
"We will endure," she whispers to Father Winter. Then she stands, and orients her teleportation towards the doomed city of Sootopolis.

Killing changes a person. It snaps something inside of them, a bowstring that can never be restrung in exactly the same way. She has hovered there, at that awful precipice. She would have killed PENELOPE LIVY, she knows. That certainty should sicken her, but all it does is make her feel empty: like recognizing an inevitability or reciting a fundamental law of physics. An object will not change motion unless acted upon by an outside force.[break][break]
Penelope had attacked her first.[break][break]
"You had no other choice," Nomi agrees, with heavy certainty. Complicated feelings for Elisabeth Fiorelli aside, Nomi gets it. People protect that which they love. She's never understood that more clearly than she does now, in this moment, floating beside him.[break][break]
"Where are the others, Howard?"[break][break]
It's a sloppy transition, that does nothing to honor the Underboss, but she cannot bear the mental image of Elisabeth Fiorelli's mangled body one second longer. Apathy must be leveraged here, lest they both crumble.[break][break]

She names them with the reverence they deserve.

Meloetta. Nomi wasn't overly familiar with the mythical creature. It had some connection to top champion Melody Miro, she knew, but as far as she was aware, it wasn't an Avatarship bond. Not yet, anyway.[break][break]
Meloetta was a musical Pokemon, capable of producing ethereal songs befitting the divine. It made sense why it would be drawn to Hoenn's most famous pop star. But why would it also be associated with this ex-DRK Triad member? That didn't make much sense at all.[break][break]
"You are correct," Nomi nodded to Shalin. "Current Sygna technology is not capable of channeling the power of mythical and legendary Pokemon. In fact, Sygna Suits negate Avatar powers for reasons we still don't entirely understand, though I can tell you that it has something to do with the nature of Infinity Energy."[break][break]
She shifted, expression equal parts troubled and contemplative.[break][break]
"New species...perhaps they were paradoxes."[break][break]
It would not surprise her to learn that there were more of those. After all, they were the products of human imagination: boundless. Unlimited.[break][break]
"This Collector sounds unpredictable," Nomi decided. "But if she's no longer with the DRK Triad, perhaps she could be swayed to help us against them. Do you think she would appear again, if we went looking for her?"

The reminder is a special kind of cruelty, because behind the hurt and the exasperation and the will-we-ever-be-okay desperation, there's real fear in Parker's stormy grey eyes. Fear of losing the one thing they've built, together, just for them. Fear of becoming so unmoored, there may never be another homecoming.[break][break]
Somewhere deep inside, Nomi knows that homes aren't places, they're people. But she can't bring herself to say so. She can't find the right words, the ones that won't sound callous, the ones that will comfort both of them in their time of need.[break][break]
The seconds tick by, and Parker's life fades, and for the first time since the Unown claimed her soul, she thinks maybe this world isn't worth saving.[break][break]
"I love you," she confesses to Parker, maybe for the last time. With defiance (because this bickering? It isn't them). With certainty (because without that, she's lost). With all that she can give.

She was trying to save the world, after all. Every conversation these days needed to be at least subtly aligned with her purpose. Perhaps it was simply intuition, but Elaine felt important to Nomi somehow. She suspected it had to do with their unexpected connection in the prison.[break][break]
"We are all cogs in Arceus's wheel," Nomi continued.[break][break]
She approached Elaine, arms at her sides and Kallistatus by her shoulder. She gave off an innocuous aura: small, soft, and without much in the way of physical strength. Though she was no longer an academic, she carried the air of someone studious. A keen observer and a quick thinker.[break][break]
"It is good to meet you, too." She cocked her head, bob of blue hair framing her face. "You are of interest to me, primarily because of what happened in the prison. Surely you noticed it, too?" She flashed the other woman a small smile. "We were granted very similar powers."

Nomi watched with eager, curious eyes as the shadow Unown conjured a dome of shimmering pink energy around itself. Unlike the starry expanse generated during DIVINE IMMINENCE - a miniature recreation of the Unown Dimension - this one reminded Nomi of geometric patterns...and its color was more akin to Palkia's SPATIAL REND than anything she'd ever seen an Unown conjure.[break][break]
Which was both a disturbing and intriguing prospect.[break][break]
"There are several ways Pokemon can develop Z-Moves," Nomi mused. "The ingestion of a passho berry, contact with wormhole radiation, and, most mysteriously, channeling the energy of Z-Crystals - which may be fragments of Necrozma."[break][break]
If the world would stop ending every ten seconds, she could resume her research into the nature of Z-Crystals with Zev Harcourt. Alas.[break][break]
"But if I understand correctly - you are not aware of any of those factors?" She regarded Ameena, clearly in her scientific element.

An involuntary shiver passed through Nomi. Father Winter had taken her to a world in which she, herself, had joined the DRK Triad instead of Rocket. How did these alternate realities - these branching paths - come to exist? Was it based on their choices now, within the Origin Point, or had Arceus - or whatever had created Arceus - mapped out these various iterations in advance of the universe's existence?[break][break]
And what of their time in Galar? Had that been a branching path, or simply a very realistic, very robust dream?[break][break]
A dull ache began to form behind her temple, directly between her eyes.[break][break]
"I think," she began, words forming slowly. "That the RKS scenarios have grains of truth to them, one way or another. I think it's quite possible that the entire network of simulations is, in actuality, a map."[break][break]
She had long suspected this, and now it was time to share her theory.[break][break]

Tempting because it would please Isaac Merlo, who's absence in her life feels like a missing limb. Tempting because it is, deep down, what parker jones wants: to be rid of Rocket, the constant storm cloud looming over their relationship. Tempting because it might restore her academic career and allow for reconciliation with GIDEON GRAVES. Tempting because, above all else, it would allow her some much-needed rest.[break][break]
"Rocket is my family," she murmurs. It is a gentle rejection. "And besides," she pauses, keenly aware of Zacian's intense gaze. Not on her, but on him. "You know as well as I do that people like PENELOPE LIVY don't play by the rules. Government-sanctioned amnesty will not keep me safe from her vengeance."[break][break]
It would take more than just Navy to protect her from that, and she does not have the time to waste on any more politicking.[break][break]
She lays a hand on his arm. It's an encouraging gesture, but her expression hardens.[break][break]

She can see them all, of course. She watches them arrive through her many hidden eyes. She feels no urge to join them, not while they squabble about wins and losses, life and death. They should all know by now her stance in regards to the war: its motives and its outcomes. Wasteful.[break][break]
We are all replaceable.[break][break]
"No," she insists aloud, to nothing and everything. Around her, the galaxies of the Unown Dimension glitter with infinite potential. "Don't say that, Howard."[break][break]
But that isn't her cue. They've already made their pact: signed in blood and backed by ancients. She doesn't need to make a dramatic entrance to convince him of his worth.[break][break]
It isn't until Shred cheekily addresses Lulu Flint, that Nomi finally stirs, curiosity piqued.[break][break]
"A paradox."[break][break]
She materializes in an instant in the middle of the room, addressing Shred. A shimmering veil of blue crystal dissipates: the aftermath of her teleportation. Kallistatus hovers beside her shoulder, its singular gaze fixed on jayden cross. It appears distant - as if recalling a sudden memory.[break][break]
Nomi makes a point of not looking at her brother, the ruinous taunts of PENELOPE LIVY haunting her resolve. Shame burns in the pit of her stomach - but so, too, does suspicion.[break][break]
Having made her guess, she pads over to the chair beside Lulu, and quietly takes a seat.
