For ten glorious, beautiful, life-changing seconds, Nomi thought maybe - just maybe - Parker was going to kiss her.[break][break]
Parker's mouth curled up in one of her signature delighted, utterly-self-satisfied grins as Nomi finished her confession: the ghost of the lady-killer smile she'd flashed when Nomi had told Cillian to shut up and trust her. Parker was leaning in, looking at Nomi like she wanted to grab her across the table, hands twitching as if she might actually do it. The hungry - starving - expression on Parker's face sent a thrill through Nomi and she leaned in too, because she'd been daydreaming about this a million different ways, and yet - [break][break]
This isn't how it happens.[break][break]
Nomi faltered, a sharp pain in the middle of her temple causing her to wince.[break][break]
And then there was blood, so much blood, which caused Nomi to yelp in surprise. The worst nosebleed she had ever seen anyone suffer was happening to Parker, and the other woman was scrambling to contain it, her fingers now an angry red and her eyes wild with pain and confusion. Panic clawed at Nomi's chest, driving away the giddy joy of almost-being-kissed.[break][break]
"Isaac!" Nomi called out to him. "Napkins! Towels! Anything! Please. Hurry!"[break][break]
And then, because everything she'd said about Parker had been heartfelt and true, Nomi slid out of the booth and dashed around the table and did not hesitate for even a second to grab the single surviving napkin from their nacho dinner and press it to Parker's face. There was a specific spot right above a person's teeth that needed pressure during a nosebleed; Nomi wasn't a doctor, but she knew enough about the human body to be able to help in a crisis.[break][break]
"Hey, it's allright," she reassured Parker in a soothing tone, crawling into the booth with her and trying to keep her head steady. "Just stay calm."[break][break]

Nomi blinked in confusion. Before she could say anything, however, Parker launched into a rambling speech about how they were, in fact, on a date. How she'd bought a new outfit specifically for said date. How Isaac had advised her to get a tattoo?[break][break]
You're so fuckin' outta my league, Nomi, but I wanted to try.[break][break]
Nomi's mouth parted in sudden understanding. She glanced at Isaac suspiciously, but he seemed to be backing away ever so slightly. His expression was pleased, but in an honest, relieved sort of way: less like a guilty man fleeing a crime scene and more like, well, a man who didn't want to encroach on something private. Something he'd hoped would happen. When you strike two rocks against each other hard enough - assuming they're the right rocks - a spark will ignite.[break][break]
Nomi looked back at Parker, and because she had keen eyes - the sort of eyes that could pick out the most minute detail of the chemical makeup of any given compound - Nomi finally noticed the fear behind the swagger. Parker was shooting her shot, and she was praying she'd chosen the right angle.[break][break]
"I wanted this to be a date," Nomi declared, with passion. "I still want that. I've wanted you to ask me out for ages, Parker." Nomi blushed, pushing through the awkwardness of confessing her feelings. Oddly, the more she spoke, the easier it became. "I don't want you to be just a bodyguard. I want you to - "[break][break] - do unspeakable things to me, in my office, in my apartment, anywhere really, right here would be just fine I don't care if Isaac sees - [break][break]
" - to know that you're incredibly hot and it's absurd that you think I'm out of your league: I literally hang out with floating eyeballs and I dissect things on the regular and even though people say I'm important it's you who's important to me."[break][break]
Her chest heaved as she remembered to breathe.

Nomi's eyes fluttered open.[break][break]
At first, she thought the simulation had changed again. She was...floating? No, there was something warm and solid pressed against her - wrapped around her - and she knew, instinctively, that it was Parker holding her before she looked up and saw the woman's concerned face.[break][break]
"I'm sorry," Nomi apologized, blushing, her voice a hoarse, panicked whisper. "I should have asked you if it was okay to invite Yumi along. I should have just asked you about her from the start, I..." She trailed off, feeling utterly disoriented. Visions from the strange dream were still fading from her mind.[break][break]
Nomi's eyes flicked to Parker's hand, as if expecting to see the ring there. It was the same ring from the field notes she'd brought back from the Ancient Tomb. She wears it on a necklace, remember? Right. Real memories began to replace the ones that she didn't understand - that were probably just her subconscious playing tricks on her - and she took a deep breath.[break][break]
"We should leave the machine," she decided, much to her chagrin. "I don't feel...right. Is Yumi okay?"

To Nomi's horror, Parker was not in the bathroom. The pink-haired scientist stood in front of the mirror for several long seconds, breathing in-and-out to calm herself, wondering if the beautiful woman in the cute floral dress and makeup and curled hair staring back at her was really her. Because how could that woman have messed up a first date so badly, been rejected so thoroughly?[break][break]
I can always text her. Even if she left, I can still tell her what I want.[break][break]
Isaac's advice burned through her like a shot of whiskey, warming her to the very core and shaking her free from the helplessness that had threatened to overtake her. Nomi nodded encouragingly at herself in the mirror, then promptly turned around and headed back out of the bathroom.[break][break]
Nomi hurried across the bar, weaving between the other servers and patrons, until her table came into view. Of course Isaac hadn't abandoned her. He was still there, leaning casually against the partition between booths, and he was speaking with...[break][break]
Speaking with Parker.[break][break]
"You're still here!" Nomi blurted out, sliding back into her seat and smiling like she'd just won the lottery. She felt giddy and nervous but also...hopeful. "I mean, of course you are," she recovered, blushing. "We must have just missed each other in the bathroom."[break][break]
She glanced sidelong at Isaac. I think I've got this, her expression seemed to convey, eyes shining with something that wasn't-quite-confidence but wasn't-quite-uncertainty either.[break][break]
Tell her what you want, she repeated to herself, her new mantra for fending off the fear of rejection.

Nomi was already accustomed to exploring the ocean, considering it was one of the many ways to collect samples and specimens from various aquatic Pokémon. She released her Starmie, then hopped off the dock into the water after it, immediately taking hold of one of its pointed limbs.[break][break]
"Let's go down and see what we can find!" She urged. Lilac's red gem flashed in reply, then the Starmie zoomed under the waves and into the depths below.[break][break]
It took some time before Nomi and Lilac spotted anything in the sand: a slight glitter, barely noticeable. Nomi pointed and Lilac brought her down to the spot. She began to dig out the object she'd seen...[break][break]

Nomi excitedly led the two men over to the line for the extreme-spin ride. Luckily, it wasn't too long. As they waited, she eagerly - and rather clinically - explained the benefits and detriments of social media to Jayden.[break][break]
"If you're a creator of some kind, it can be really good for promoting your work," she said, swiping through a few of her favorite artists to show him their accounts. "I use it to connect with other students in my graduate program." She paused. "It's easy to get kind of sucked in, though. You'll be scrolling and suddenly like, an hour will have gone by..."[break][break]
She smiled sheepishly, thinking of all the time she'd spent on that Rondez-View of Luv mobile game back in the Spring. Social media could be kind of like that sometimes, if you weren't careful.[break][break]
Vaguely, she wondered if the DRK Triad had infiltrated the various social networks popular around Hoenn the same way they had so many other aspects of society...[break][break]
The sound of children and adults alike screaming in both terror and happiness shook Nomi from her reverie. They'd arrived at the front of the line! Taking Jayden's hand, she pulled him onto the seat next to her, then waited for Cillian to sit across from them.[break][break]
"Okay here we go!"[break][break]
Her grin was that of a scientist absolutely delighted by the idea of enduring a physics-defying joyride.

Things had been hard since the conflict at the Ancient Tomb. Cillian, especially, had seemed moodier than usual. He'd had the same distant, grief-touched look in his eyes that Nomi recognized from the day he'd told her about Lulu Flint's disappearance. She was worried about him, and wanted to see him happy again - well, if not happy (he hadn't exactly been a happy man before the incident), then at least capable of flashing her the usual wry smiles and subtly affectionate gestures few in his life had earned.[break][break]
One other such person who had earned Cillian's brotherhood also happened to be with them. Nomi had also wanted to cheer him up too. And so it was that she stood with jayden cross and Cillian Quinn, beaming brilliantly at them, intent on having a fun time at the traveling FUNTASIA festival despite her own lack of sleep, tormented thoughts, and rising anxieties about the fate of their region.[break][break]
"Should we try the extreme-spin one?" Nomi exclaimed excitedly, pocketing her phone. She'd just finished typing out her own #Funtasia social media post about the festival, on the account she used to connect with other Slateport University graduate students. "Sounds crazy, doesn't it?" She paused, realizing maybe her two companions weren't exactly the extreme-spin sorts. "I like the ferris wheel, too, though - if you'd prefer a slower ride. Being so high up can be really peaceful."[break][break]

The Skeleton.[break][break]
Nomi's head pounded, and she gasped as the world righted itself again. The vision had been incredibly vivid, as if she had been sucked through a portal into ultra space.[break][break]
"Why was Eternatus fighting a Deoxys?" She blurted out, feeling dizzy. "That's not right. It fought Necrozma in -- "[break][break]
Galar. She was about to say Galar. But how would she know that? She'd never been to Galar...had she?[break][break]
"Aurelie?" Nomi called out, shakily getting to her feet and going over to the red-haired woman. She crouched down, putting a hand on her shoulder, wincing as a wave of vertigo passed through her.[break][break]
Aurelie mumbled something about possibly throwing up, then she shut her eyes tight and seemed to get ahold of herself - if momentarily. All around them, the ruins and the purple rock began to dissolve, breaking apart and reforming into some new scenario. Nomi had no idea what she should do about Aurelie...so she simply held onto her, hoping the solid feel of her hand would bring some measure of comfort to the bladesmith.[break][break]
"I do think that rock was a piece of Eternatus," Nomi murmured, realizing just how discerning Aurelie's observation had been. How did she know about Eternatus? Had she been to the Ancient Tomb? Nomi did not fully understand why, but she knew, intuitively, that the two were connected somehow. "It wasn't real, but we should record everything we noticed about it after we're done in the machine. Perhaps there's a tangible one out there somewhere..."

"How does she not know the - " Nomi began, then faltered, Isaac's words finally hitting home.[break][break]
For the first time since acknowledging her crush on Parker, Nomi considered things from the other woman's perspective. If Parker had her own crush on Nomi, then wouldn't she be feeling the exact same way Nomi was feeling? Uncertain, nervous, hopeful, terrified? Parker surely had more dating experience than Nomi (most did), but that didn't mean she'd ever successfully landed a serious girlfriend before. Hook-ups were one thing; relationships were entirely another.[break][break]
Just hadda make sure there wasn't anyone, y'know, in the picture. Like some hot assistant or something.[break][break]
"Oh," Nomi realized, gasping, staring up at Isaac with wide eyes. "Oh.[break][break]
Parker was also afraid of rejection.[break][break]
"She doesn't want to mess this up, either," Nomi muttered, blushing, feeling foolish. "But Isaac, isn't it obvious that I'm smitten with her?"[break][break]
Well, maybe not obvious enough. People could blind themselves to the truth rather easily. Hadn't Nomi done that to herself in regards to her parents' ugly fates?[break][break]
Isaac's optimism was infectious, and his advice was sound. No more feeler questions, no more defensive interrogations. She would have to be...well, vulnerable. He was right to call her out on it.[break][break]
Nomi abruptly stood, expression determined.[break][break]
"I'll tell her what I want," she assured him. "Er, but not too intensely." She smiled a little. "I'm, um, going to go to the bathroom and see if I can find her."[break][break]
With that, she hurried off.

"Isaac!" Nomi hissed, eyes wide with panic. She grabbed onto his arm, a vice grip that would not allow him to casually wander away again in his guise of "the suave waiter just keeping an eye on things."[break][break]
"I told you," she insisted, trying not to look like a woman who's heart was hammering a million miles a minute against her chest, preparing itself to be shattered quite definitively. "She ran away. I asked her if this was a date and she left."[break][break]
Nomi sucked in a breath, tried to calm down. Parker had gone to the bathroom, she hadn't left the building. But that look in her eyes had been clear as crystal. It was the Oh Shit look. The "I gotta get out of here right now" look. It was the "I'm definitely not into this person the way she thinks I am" look. It was the - [break][break]
Tears threatened, but she held them back. Easy. This was easy! This was the expected result. Scientists didn't lose their cool when an experiment produced a normal result. They recorded the data and moved on to the next trial.[break][break]

"Okay, look," Nomi tried again. "I think she does find me attractive. Before leaving, she tried to convince me she didn't need all that much persuading to - to ask me out. She all but admitted it was a date, but when I asked for clarity, like you advised me to, her face completely changed and -- "[break][break]

"I'm rambling, aren't I," she sighed, appalled. What sort of Rocket Head Scientist fell apart over a first date gone wrong? Miserably, she let go of Isaac and hung her head.[break][break]
"Thanks for looking out for me," she murmured to him, more quietly. But you were wrong - I'm not a catch at all.
