A deviation. An unexpected result. Every scientist learned to deal with them, to record the data and contemplate what went wrong. What might have been the variable to tip the scales in a different direction.[break][break]
"Hm, the exit hasn't appeared yet," Nomi murmured to Isaac. "How curious. I wonder if there's been a malfunction - "[break][break]
The voice that answered her was not Isaac's, however, and Nomi's blood ran cold at the sound of it. It was a voice Nomi would know anywhere, had heard in her dreams, had tried desperately to find again and again to no avail.[break][break]
Until now.[break][break]
"Holo!" Nomi whirled around, facing the white haired woman as she crawled out of some unknown moment in space-time and into their current reality. "Were you looking for me?"[break][break]
Nomi's crimson eyes narrowed, distrustful, wondering if this was just another simulation. It didn't feel that way...[break][break]
If the DRK Triad had been involved in the Rondez-View of Luv game - as Nomi suspected - then Holo would have known that Nomi had, in fact, been searching for her. So why show herself to Nomi now?[break][break]
Holo made a quip about lovers and Nomi's first, panicked thought was that parker jones was here somewhere, that she'd been taken or - blondes?[break][break]
Isaac. She meant Isaac. Nomi remembered that Rondez-View of Luv scenario, too. How much had changed since she'd played his route, wished they could be something more, only to have her heart stolen not long after by someone else, someone perfect for her.[break][break]
"You're right, I prefer red hair."[break][break]
She flashed Isaac an apologetic smile, stepping up next to him. Her Unown-A teleported to her side, its singular eye fixating on Holo's Unown-K. The two stared at one another in obvious opposition. Nomi felt a sudden rush of pride and affection: her Unown had not abandoned her for Holo, something she had not been able to test with a DRK Triad member until now. She too, glanced at the Unown-K, then, wondering if she could win it to her side somehow. She'd been trying so hard lately to understand these creatures, the eyes of Arceus.[break][break]
Then Holo casually dropped a bomb that changed everything.[break][break]
"How many?" Nomi echoed. How many Isaacs?[break][break]
How many realities were there?

It's hubris to think any of us are truly capable of completely controlling these gods and monsters who bestow their patronage upon us.[break][break]
Nomi's gaze found Kaname Fujihara's, and the first thing she felt upon hearing his words was a pang of sorrow. Had not Felix Gallagher expressed similar sentiments to all of them, once? The former Admin was absent from their table now, and Nomi had not seen him recently. The last time they'd spoken, an attempt had been made by Nomi to soften the blow of Elisabeth Fiorelli's...situation. It was the guilt she felt for not being able to align herself more closely with Elisabeth prior to her pact with the ruinous beast that inspired protectiveness in Nomi now, for all of their Avatars.[break][break]
Perhaps there was something to be said about Elisabeth's own warning, ironically: the volatility of human loyalty. But it was Kaname's reminder that rattled her.[break][break]
A memory surfaced: the air thick with incense, an unnerving degree of certainty, the rolling of dice.[break][break]
Tell me, Ms. Sato, what is it that you're so afraid of that you seek holy guidance?[break][break]
"You are right to warn us, Kaname," Nomi said, finally. "But we cannot learn the rules of their game unless we get close to them, and by forming bonds with some of us, the Gods are - knowingly or unknowingly - giving us an opportunity to study their natures. I would be disinclined to ignore that, despite the risks."[break][break]
Crimson eyes found fern delaney then, and it was not lost on Nomi that by calling upon them, she would be testing Kaname Fujihara's resolve.[break][break]
"Perhaps our newest Avatar would be willing to weigh in on their learnings."

Parker hadn't liked it. Nomi had said, "it's for Rocket" and that had only deepened the other woman's scowl. Then she'd said, "it's for Hoenn" and Parker had relented - reluctantly. She'd insisted on accompanying Nomi to the carnival, but had promised to stay out of the way.[break][break]
His line was long, but Nomi was patient. The sort of patient that made the painstaking process of cataloguing lab samples no more or less exciting than expeditions into the rifts. She watched his queue fill and empty, fill and empty, over and over. Crowds of people came to grovel before him, and it was not lost on Nomi that this supposedly brilliant councilman did not smile with his eyes. If anything, Nomi thought he looked empty, in the way that exhausted people do when they know they won't be afforded any time to rest.[break][break]
When there was a lull in the line, a moment's respite, Nomi pounced on the opportunity to get close. They'd agreed to meet here, after all; he'd even given her exact instructions regarding what to say to placate his handlers.[break][break]
"Hello Mr. Silph. Naomi Sato at your service. I believe we have a date?"

Nomi listened carefully to the men and their demands. Cillian's - or rather, Priam's - logic was sound, and Nomi found herself nodding.[break][break]
In the end, it was not difficult to make the choice. She was a scientist, the truth was her God. What did ideals matter in the face of cold, hard facts? One could believe anything they wished, but that wouldn't make it true. Only through the trial and error of first-hand observation, prolonged experimentation, and scrupulous data analysis could one know anything for certain.[break][break]
"I already do," she murmured. "Live in pursuit of the truth."[break][break]
She only hoped that, if this machine was feeding them lies, she'd be able to see through them.[break][break]

What a bizarre situation. Of all of the scenarios she had encountered thus far, this one struck her as the most nonsensical.[break][break]
The Ditto transformed into a hole, the obvious exit. The only exit? Nomi glanced around, checking to make absolutely certain they hadn't missed anything in their violent haste. Crimson eyes scanned the room, drinking in the sight of their destruction. Had there really been so many toys? So many breakable items?[break][break]
"What was the point of all that?" She wondered aloud, following Admin Bee into the dark depths of the Ditto's transformed state.[break][break]

The last enigmatic puzzle piece popped into place, and something in Nomi's brain twanged taut enough to snap, and whatever was happening it wasn't even remotely scientific and that was perfect, that was just right.[break][break]
Strands of pink hair, darkened by the water, streaked her face and dripped onto Parker's chest as she was lifted roughly and hauled onto eager hips. Parker's next kiss ignited her like a match to straw, and Nomi squirmed against the strong arms that held her, greedy for the friction. She drank from the well of Parker's passion with an insatiable thirst, dainty fingers lacing themselves none-too-daintily through the other woman's hair, a thumb at the nape of her neck.[break][break]
And how sweet, how triumphant, how indescribably blissful it was to be held like this, kissed like this, wanted like this. It blew open the locked door behind which Nomi usually kept all of her longing violently enough to shatter the hinges.[break][break]
Parker groaned and Nomi laughed softly against her mouth, giddy with desire.[break][break]
"Parker," her name, teasingly drawn-out, requesting action.

From the moment Nomi had met Zev Harcourt, she had known what he was: more monster than human. She had studied his new powers, observed his demeanor in Lesser Megalopolis, and read every report available on his history. Once, she had even visited him for advice and had been made stronger because of it. She had seated herself next to him at this very meeting without batting an eyelash; out of all the dangerous people at the table, his would-be patron was the most terrifying of them all, and he had been the one to explain to them all why.[break][break]
"The Black Knight," she murmured softly, ominously. "Prefers to leave no survivors." Was not their very own Black Hand the same? Better for him to be their ally rather than their enemy.[break][break]
And what of the Skeleton? But she did not voice that thought.[break][break]
She paused, glancing at Elisabeth Fiorelli. The one they hadn't kept a close enough eye on. Nomi wouldn't make that same mistake twice, which is why she intended to keep tabs on Zev.[break][break]
"Because Underboss Fiorelli makes a very important point - one I do agree with - I must emphasize that as long as the DRK Triad is allied with Arceus, they will have powers beyond our imagining. They will be able to take control of other universes before we can, for good or for ill."[break][break]
Her eyes found Zev once more.[break][break]
"Chu-e Choi was weak," she said simply. Matter-of-fact. She'd read those reports, too. "It is in our best interest to support Zev in finding and wrangling Necrozma. The power to destroy other universes is something we need, if we are to fight the DRK Triad on a cosmic scale."[break][break]
But how to leave theirs?[break][break]
"I should note," she added finally. "That I have made it my number one priority as of late, to discover how the Unown travel between realms. The DRK Triad uses them this way, after all." She smiled pleasantly. "I believe that I have successfully begun to earn their trust."

By the time Nomi extracted herself from bryan delarosa's bear hug, several people were squabbling. She sighed, glancing sharply at Kaname Fujihara when Cillian Quinn reprimanded the group, in support of the Underboss, silently communicating her desire for her fellow Head Scientist to get ahold of himself.[break][break]
She noted Kaname's jealousy of fern delaney, however; it was a side of Kaname she had not yet seen: petty and edged with resentment. She filed the data away, wondering if Elisabeth Fiorelli's Wo-Chien was affecting the group more than all of them realized.[break][break]
Nomi spared the snail a curious glance, but declan walsh arrived before she could discern its intentions.[break][break]
Kanto. The word gave Nomi pause, eliciting a pang of sorrow. Her parents had died in Kanto, because of Kanto, and so it was her turn to feel a twinge of resentment. She had promised Cillian that she would not let him down, however, and she had meant it. If there was anything she wanted out of sending a report to Kanto, it was to prove to the regime that their Hoenn counterparts were quite capable of handling their business differently. Better. Without meaningless casualties and brilliant minds wasted.[break][break]
A faded memory of a familiar battlefield, damaged nerves, and the stench of death.[break][break]
War was undesirable. But perhaps unavoidable.[break][break]
"I don't disagree that the League are a nuisance. Dangerous, even," Nomi spoke up, glancing at jayden cross. She nodded to him respectfully, before she went on to disparage his point. "But I believe the more we focus on them, the more we are playing right into the DRK Triad's hands."[break][break]
She paused, meeting Walsh's dark gaze. Unafraid.[break][break]
"The conflicts at the Ultra Deep Sea and the Ancient Tomb were distractions. Perhaps even deliberately orchestrated by those who wish to see us waste our time with the League. I even have suspicions that our very own RKS Machine has been infiltrated by the DRK Triad, which we might have been able to prevent had our attention not been so divided."[break][break]
Her voice hardened, her Unown-A drifting closer to her shoulder, staring out at the table with much the same intensity that she did.[break][break]
"Arceus and its agents are our greatest threat."

He claims to have seen God.[break][break]
Nomi had been skeptical. At first, she'd brushed off the rumors as the nonsensical ramblings of a mad man, ignoring them for more pressing matters. After returning empty-handed after her first journey into the RKS Machine, however, the name Judicael began to worm its way into her thoughts, nagging at her as she attempted to fine-tune the Seal Stone's compatibility with their equipment. Nomi had never trusted religion, faith a frivolous thing in comparison to the reliability of the scientific method.[break][break]
And yet, she could not deny the existence of legendary Pokémon: demi-Gods capable of blessing humanity with unprecedented power.[break][break]
She could not deny that, somewhere out there, Arceus was waiting.[break][break]
And so she gave in to temptation, making her way to Fortree in search of the supposed cultist. She did not advertise her decision, wary of her Rocket colleagues thinking it unprofessional of a Head Scientist to dabble in the supernatural. She simply slipped away one afternoon, field journal and tape recorder at the ready, an Unown-N floating beside her, determined to find out the truth.[break][break]
Hoenn was in danger, and every day they failed to reach Arceus was another day closer to the apocalypse.[break][break]
It took several hours, but she eventually found him. Judicael, the man who had survived space-time.[break][break]
"Hello?"

Nomi gaped at Priam as he began to rattle off the names and descriptions of the constellations he had supposedly learned about at the Ancient Tomb, while they'd all been forced to sleep under some supernatural spell. As he spoke, enthusiastic and animated in his delivery, Nomi's head began to ache. Not because Priam was annoying to listen to, but because she recognized some of what he was talking about.[break][break]
Hastily, she opened the drawer of her desk and pulled out the notbook. The one she had recovered at the Ancient Tomb, that she'd apparently had on her the entire time without knowing it. The field journal with all of the mystery research she'd supposedly conducted alongside not-Parker's-but-probably-Parker's scribbled contributions. She whipped it out and rapidly turned to the last pages. She held them out for Priam to see.[break][break]

Nomi beamed at the mention of the Winter's Kiss, last year's signature drink during the winter bar crawl.[break][break]
"Yes! It was seasonal," she confirmed with a swell of pride. "Seasonal specialties are something we're known for here at Moonblast."[break][break]
Nomi often used the fresh lavender that grew outside the brewery in her summer recipes, and there was a rather large pile of it on the bar counter, which she motioned at so her visitor would notice. "I tend to use fresh flowers in summer," she explained. "If you have any recommendations for fun seasonal recipes - or better yet, ideas of your own that you'd like to execute, I'd love to hear them."[break][break]
The young scientist took out a tasting glass and poured a splash of bright yellow beer, the color of sunshine, sliding it over to him without pretense. "For example, this is my most recent iteration of our house beer, Rollout I. It's a session IPA. I was considering taking the base and experimenting with spice - like, red chili pepper or spicy Figy berries." She grinned, expression playful, though her keen eyes watched him curiously. "What do you think of that? Worth trying?"

The extreme spin ride had certainly earned its name. Nomi left the ride with wild hair and an even wilder grin. She giggled, feeling dizzy, grabbing onto Jayden's arm to keep from falling. As the world righted itself, she noticed a stand selling funnel cake and made a mental note to find it later, her stomach grumbling.[break][break]
"Bumper cars sound fun!" Nomi agreed, though she had absolutely zero experience riding them. She was just glad to see Cillian's spirits lifting.[break][break]
The line for the bumper cars was longer this time, so Nomi passed the time by watching a trio of children clustered around a Magikarp fishing game, concentrating so hard it was almost comical. Then the smallest of them - a little girl with curly red hair - screamed in triumph, pulling out a Magikarp larger than her entire body.[break][break]
Nomi had never thought of herself as the sort of woman who would make a good mother, too devoted to her work to feel maternal instincts...but as her eyes drifted back towards the two men beside her, she considered them both and decided that, given a second chance at a more normal life, Cillian would make a fantastic father.[break][break]
They reached the end of the line and Nomi quickly dashed over to a bright pink bumper car. "You guys better watch out!" She taunted playfully, only to immediately crash into a pillar, her handling of the bulky car mediocre at best.
