The room was freezing now. A chill that crept up his spine, with lethal intent by just a glance. Sweat trickles down, a trepidatious cascade that has his heart pound in his ear. He opens his mouth. No words come out. How can he speak? He's a man dying of thirst with how dry his throat feels.[break][break]

Walsh effortlessly mentions the defection, a technicality that led him to be unpardoned while many walked free. His hand balls to a fist at his side. Was he about to be made an example of? But the crosshairs were not on him. They were on Jayden.[break][break]

And for a moment... Ashley imagined Jayden struggling. Squirming. And it doesn't sit well with him. Walsh doesn't sit well with him.[break][break]

Just say it. Just say it. Just fucking say it, Jay. He's thinking, the sweat like a waterfall now, ice in his veins. But no matter how cold the sweat, Jayden takes the failure with dignity.[break][break]

"There-" He shuts himself up. He's shaking. Is this what the boss was like? He didn't get this way with any other admin or underboss. He was... afraid.[break][break]

So he shuts his mouth.[break][break]

"You know I can't do that." At least. Not yet. He looks behind him, and it's all fire and brimstone behind him. He looks ahead. It's fire and brimstone ahead. The only difference is when and where. But the same path, the same fork in the road is the split.[break][break]

I wish I listened to you the first time, .[break][break]

It's bittersweet now. Knowing that the closest thing to a father he had had warned him almost a year ago from coming back. Had done everything to get him from coming back. Had attempted to push him away from it, and Ashley accepted it, thinking there was nothing more to him than the runaway delinquent who would die to a bullet. But now, he had a burning need to fight the machine.[break][break]

Well. He wanted to. But right on the money, Isaac bullseyes it.[break][break]

"Yeah... I'd need to get him out too." Ashley can feel his heart burning, knowing that if he does stay, then his close proximity to Isaac puts Kepler in the crossfires. If he does go, he is leaving him to die. And if he takes Kep with him... then he damns his fiancee to the same fate. He looks to the engagement ring on his ring finger.[break][break]

He smiles quietly.[break][break]

"Can... you get Kep out, first? If... they can't use him against me, they can't break me."[break][break]

A big smile. Knowing what he's asking here.

Unlike Paxton, Ash wasn't even piecing it together. He's not dumb, but a mask kept the man hidden. The face of someone he hated. This person though? It doesn't register. He seemed nice enough, and with a big grin from him, as they make a firm handshake...[break][break]

He is none the wiser.[break][break]

With the trainers coming to round up the two stragglers, Paxton asks about the more gentle horses, and with it they give potentially a shiny Rapidash, a little neigh, a little blow of the nostrils, and then Paxton throws him under the bus, and though the silver-haired man swivels on a heel...[break][break]

"Hey, I've ridden a Yanmega before. I'm sure it'll be fine." He laughs, little Laguna making more squelching noises to join in the hearty laughter. The Rapidash was insulted, and now that he was under the bus, he might as well enjoy it and not insult the Rapidash.[break][break]

But he turns his head towards Paxton, and... actually laughs agreeably with him.[break][break]

"Heh. You're damn right. Fuck that guy."[break][break]

What a good, friendly person. He holds his hand out to the wranglers, and calls out. "One with the shiny Rapidash. I'm feelin' confident, and I was so graciously chosen by my cohort here." he chuckles out, and shoots Paxton a smirk. A little challenging one.[break][break]

Man. Paxton Concordas was a cool guy.

The split happens again. That road again. The fork in the road. It's a road he's walked before, and it does nothing to inspire him. It's the eerie road to walk upon, seeing one way being salvation, and the other ruination. He sees both sides now. He knows better than anyone the struggles that sit upon that road.[break][break]

It's that important to him. It's the road he chose salvation for years ago. It's the the circle around he walked back here just under a year ago. His silver eyes look aimlessly forward, out at sea.[break][break]

He takes one breath in, and one breath out.[break][break]

"They'll kill him."[break][break]

He makes the choice to walk back to salvation. Once more. The road where he can get out of this hell. To help someone else like him. Even if he knows that doing so, will mean he's the one tortured. That he's the one who will be beaten. Whether , , or some other Rocket, hell, even or . He makes the choice. "..."[break][break]

It was time. Time to figure out where the line in the sand was.[break][break]

"I can try and help where I can. But you know what they'll do if I do that. To me. To ." Ashley sighs, eyes out to the ocean again, the darkened sea with the sun rising on it, his silver eyes lose a little light. "... you know. You were right. Rocket, League... the moment we remove the societal pressures of both factions, we can work together. Galar was proof... it was-"[break][break]

"-beautiful. This conflict is a cancer."[break][break]

But he knows damn well, what will happen next. "When you get him out... cut radio contact with me for awhile, okay? They'll come after those you were close to. I'll be able to take it." Ashley isn't on the chopping block. He'll be safe...[break][break]

He knows the pain of a man who wants to make up for what was done. Whoever actually was, he'll be able to get out. He grabs at his own chest for a moment. A reminder from Walsh. A phantom pain.[break][break]

Almost a year... enough brushes with death, enough trouble with meteors, the afterlife, and years of actual marriage fulfilled on the brink of war. And all on Ashley's mind now, as he finally turns on his heel, and takes a moment to look at Kep. All of him. He grabs Kepler's hand, and places in it... what he's held for awhile.[break][break]

And with it, Will You finds the last two words with silver, and a greenish blue jewel in a small ring. It's light.

"That we should just do it. Get married already, that is."[break][break]

He's smiling a little too much, a big wide, toothy grin to show all of them. And he lets the words sit in the air, hanging with the rainbow spectacle of bubbles shining by sunlight. With little Holy Diver preparing a WAVE CRASH to smack from the waves themselves, like Ashley had wanted.[break][break]

Here, in a small alcove on the beach, they were alone besides their Pokemon, as Ashley holds his hand out, dressed in his swimming attire. Covered in a little water, a little sweat. Fear bubbles its way in, but he doesn't relent, not a chance in hell.[break][break]

"So marry me."[break][break]

Holy Diver smashes the little Wave Crash, with Maple utilizing a MIRROR COAT to illuminate their small spot in a rainbow of coloration, to ensure both lovers didn't get wet. Ana, Laguna, and Kingsley watch on in silence, Ana and Laguna's eyes sparkling.[break][break]

He takes the breath in. He keeps his hand there.[break][break]

A king of Motostoke, huh?[break][break]

It's heartwarming. Really, it was. The brothers in arms had both been given the crown. But did either of them want it? The hilarious, weird, crazy part of it all was... Ashley kinda did. Did Isaac? He'd make a good one, that much was certain.[break][break]

Then came the rest of it. Schools. Educational systems, undeterred by Necrozma's hand. It's... empowering. They both were on different sides of the railroad track, yet they followed similarly. No, it wasn't just heartwarming. It really was a warm and fuzzy feeling around his heart. It brought no end to it.[break][break]

If that world was still out there...[break][break]

Isaac talking about his family, hearing the kids is like a shot in the bullseye. But here's the real painpoint. Cygne and Isaac did get married. Two kids. Two girls. Sabrina and Iris... kids who had lives, who had stories, who got to be people. They were people. They were real. The benefit to his own was...[break][break]

...[break][break]

Which is sadder? A kid who never got to live, or a kid who doesn't know why they no longer can and disappears? To Ash, no matter which way, its death. "You too, then." It has him stare back to the ocean. Close his eyes and just... set.[break][break]

Then Isaac goes on about his sibling, and another pain point snaps into Ashley's chest. Like a cannon shot directly into the chest. He had a sibling too. He did, she was out here, somewhere... so maybe he should look for her? Hearing being like a sister too reminds him of , Selena's own big sister energy...[break][break]

And then came . Isaac trails off, and Ash immediately hones in on it. That can't be a coincidence, can it?[break][break]

"Harcourt... wait, that Harcourt?" Ashley almost sounds troubled at that. Because now he's thinking of , and his mind is reopening the wound that was his birth father's death. He can still feel the sting of the scar on his side. It only just dawns on him...[break][break]

Oh. Fuck. A sudden pang of fear comes over him.

Ash was... distraught. After the joyful revelation of what could have been, did it all mean nothing? Did it even matter? Did anything they did in that world, in that fake Galar, actually mean anything?[break][break]

The answer was yes. It did matter. It all mattered. It can't just be erased away completely.[break][break]

It's how Ashley is crying too, trying to hold it together. Twenty years, and nothing like this could have ever registered in his mind. He never even considered it a possibility. Love finds a way. And so, as his arms tighten, holding him to let him sob, to let him crack, he takes a deep breath in.[break][break]

"You are to me."[break][break]

Is that even enough? Ashley doesn't know. He can't know. He doesn't feel like it is. But years can't just be erased. The good, and the bad both. And as he holds him tightly, tighter still, he just quietly sobs too.[break][break]

"Kep." He's trying not to let it out, but the fact of the matter is, he had something he didn't know he wanted, and it was taken before it even had a chance to be delivered. Now, all he can do is sob for what he doesn't have. What's already gone. And that destroyed him. He was so ready, and then, like that, they were snapped away.[break][break]

"Talk when... you're ready..." The sobs are getting to Ashley too, and his voice cracks. Tears begin falling over Kepler. He won't push his partner into this.

- It's fuckin him up. But Kep is still a queen to him.[break]
- Quiet sobs, he keeps Kepler there, and tells him to talk when he's ready. Even if that is no time soon...

They dance. For a moment, the older King Ash is enjoying the moment, a small grin to assure his queen, to assure him that it was all okay, that they were okay. No matter what it was, they would be able to get through it all. They would be able to-[break][break]

Wait.[break][break]

Ashley's silver eyes look towards Kepler, again and again. And again. The words that come from his lips are... confusing. Disorienting. They may not have to adopt? So... a surrogate? That could work, but with how shaky Kep's smile was, there was something else. What could it be?[break][break]

There's no way that he could-[break][break]

...[break][break]

Epiphany has him gobsmacked, and he finds himself staring, hands to his queen's shoulders, moving down. Down towards his hips, and encircling around the front. His eyes are held captive a moment, before the ascent to his eyes, and his mouth opens finally.[break][break]

"... you don't mean...?"[break][break]

He had to be sure. He needed to know. So he inquires. There's no concern on his face. In fact, Ashley's neutral gaze is cracking. To something underneath. Something he didn't realize he wanted.

Every step forward were three steps back. The overwhelming numbers advantage continued to press down on the Golurk, and Ashley got a front row seat on every one of his Pokemon fighting their heart out. Each of them fought on. Bongo never stopped the war drum. Bass, Salem, Toothless, and Sunny never stopped throwing everything they had down upon the beast, to the beat, and the rhythm.[break][break]

When Balor pried open Isaac's mouth, Ashley's gaze went to the Golurk. Things seemed under control. They seemed that way, right now, but they all knew. If that Golurk got back up...[break][break]

Best not to think about that now. Because his expression changed to joy upon seeing Isaac back. Just. Being alive, that was enough. That was the tide turner. And it did something else too. Every loss suffered... one could be saved after all. There's an overwhelmingly good feeling in his chest right now.[break][break]

Watson's big Tera moment really did blast away at the massive Golurk, but the goliath was not to be trifled with. Downed, yes. But it began to rebuild itself, slowly. As if death was always steps away, always just out or per view.[break][break]

And Isaac and Kep were absolutely right. Time to bail. One after another, Ashley returns each one, except for one. Bongo, Sunny, Salem, Toothless. And makes a whistle.[break][break]

"Bass, give us a lift."[break][break]

The Noivern turns its head happily, speeding back towards them, as Ashley looks towards Kep. "Keep him secure on Bass' back. Probably needs some Rest." Ashley hops on soon after, and gestures for Bass to prepare for take-off.[break][break]

"YAH."[break][break]

Take off time. Bass crouchs low, and shoots up like a rocket once everyone is onboard.[break][break]

- Oh yeah. They keep pushing back, best they can. Ashley hoping they still have time.[break]

Glimmoras definitely do explode, and while Ashley shoots Selena a smile, it's like that of a younger brother. He never really felt like a sibling before. Just like in Galar, she was always there, always present. While he may not have always agreed with her, that backing was important.[break][break]

It reminded him that he had a half-sister somewhere in Hoenn.[break][break]

"Duly noted. El Diablo and Reinhardt will be able to take care of it then." He too, had accepted his role as a subordinate to Selena. She was the brain, he was the shield, Hitoshi the blade. 's words from years ago had been somewhat correct, at least, twenty years ago they had been. He hadn't the experience to be a good leader.[break][break]

But he's not even perturbed by those words now. Like echoes on the wind, at best. For now, he would follow along.[break][break]

Hitoshi's surprise has him grin a little. "Probably would have liked that. Being a king, you carry the people on your back... wouldn't have wished it on anyone." But he doesn't ever say he was a bad king. In truth, he found himself oddly content with the position after awhile. At first, the people hailed him a hero, he wanted it to be gone.[break][break]

The mission truly begins with the swarm of Glimmora, and with it, Ashley does something incredibly sneaky. He tosses his Pokeball to the side, and as they get the boulder, and prepare to move it... Hitoshi is already planning the strike.[break][break]

His Kartana, Kusanagi, does just that. But as the Glimmora have no time to explode, Ashley's silver eyes wait for the moment. And then two fingers to his mouth. A whistle.[break][break]

With a roar, El Diablo ascends, the scorching SUNNY DAY behind its back, as they land with a boom, stopping out two more Glimmora, and tossing them away. It's eyes shoot to Kusanagi, and with a nod, the dragon begins to spin around to push all of the Glimmora away from the Trainers and Kusanagi.[break][break]

No need to be a shield if the boom doesn't make contact.[break][break]

El Diablo roars out, attempting to scare away the Glimmora. They were the Dragon King, the Devil, the monstrosity that sat atop the mountain. Let none challenge the king of yesterday, and fear the demon's roar.[break][break]

Hopefully, all the Glimmora were away. If they popped now, let the PROTOSYNTHESIS'd Defense take care of it. Boomtime meant little to the Dragon King El Diablo![break][break]

"Show off."[break][break]

And the bastard dragon knew it.

- Ashley responds positively to both Selena and Hitoshi. Really did miss them both.[break]
- As the mission begins, Ashley lets loose his one ball, and lets it roll off to the side... preparing as the boulder is pushed.[break]
- After Kusanagi strikes, El Diablo, the Dragon King itself, flies in with a SUNNY DAY and PROTOSYNTHESIS'd Defense to help take the brunt, spinning to push the Glimmora out of the way.[break]
- Big Dragon is roaring out. A showoff, and damn if they didn't want everyone to know. Acting like a beacon for any danger...
