Bravery cannot exist without madness.

With Caesar and Bongo still outside, the kids nod, the youngest Truesdale hugging Caesar's neck, and the daughter shakily nodding with Bongo. Bongo gives them both one last nod.

That leaves three Pokemon a piece for both Trainers, and Ashley felt sweat pour down his neck. His face was sweating, as he threw his fist back towards Isaac. As the manor door is opened... the whole manor has taken on a darker edge, and standing in the foyer, that shadowy being.

The Butcher.

"We saw you coming." Sunny, Pulse, and Lucia were at the ready. He had a plan, he had felt in his pocket, and smirked. "Well Isaac. Power of Arceus compelling you?" He places the cleanse tag on Lucia, because as Sunny began to conjure another ELECTRO BALL, and Pulse conjured a SHOCK WAVE, both would contact the Pachirisu with Volt Absorb.

He eyes to Isaac.

"I have three tags left now. How about you?"

The trapdoor was the answer, and with Ashley preparing a moment, he would close his eyes. Part of him wondered if they would continue. If they wouldn't just run now. Ashley would be back, he had to. But... when Isaac tells him the plan, Ashley can only nod.

Which meant, once more into the fire. He would take a moment and pick the youngest son and hoist him up into a piggyback on his own.

"Alright. We take them outside for now." And then they would go back in. And so, the duo would make a very, almost-too-quiet escape outside of the Truesdale Manor, silver eyes watching every nook and cranny, searching. But nothing. In fact... it's too quiet. Out the door, down the stairs, towards the entrance. Neither Isaac or Ashley found a single spectral ghost to haunt or hunt them down.

"I don't like this."

Ashley had to be honest that he hated that long stretch of quiet. But when they made it outside, a weight pulls itself from the boys. Letting the youngest Truesdale down, he holds out a Pokeball, his Thwackey, Bongo, appearing.

"Bongo. I need you to protect these kids, okay? You're the most hurt, and I can't afford to lose you. Your mission is one of the most important there is." The Thwackey looks right back towards Ashley, eyes on the serious glint in his eyes. Bongo understood without any doubts.

As the monkey holds a fist out, Ashley does the same. He'd be down his star player, but he wouldn't let Bongo die. With only three, he eyes Isaac.

"Ready?"

The Froslass wasn't going anywhere, and with a failed strike right at the Ralts, and the feigning consciousness, she attempts her damndest to pull Caesar away, but that Growlithe snaps down harder by each and every second. The Froslass would eventually fall through the floor, Caesar left to believe it to be a goner. With that, they survive another round of spectral skirmish.

Assessing the situation, each Trainer had four left. Ashley was... hesitant. On the one hand, this was Jelly and Chad's first excursion, so it didn't leave him too poorly off. But Bongo wasn't looking good, and Bongo was his star player. Leaving with Sunny, Lucia, Pulse, and a badly hurt Bongo, it left a sour taste in his mouth, and what with Kurze, the best opposition to the phantom threats was currently indisposed.

"I know what you mean. Bongo didn't look too good last I checked." He finds himself biting his lip harder. It doesn't deter him, and oddly enough his breathing was fine.

He felt oddly ecstatic. To feel the pressure a Trainer truly did get to feel. This was what Isaac had meant at the apartment about battling. This feeling of exuberance he felt in the throes of combat, where he felt nothing but stress. This was what he craved, what he had missed so long. Theo had awakened it. He wanted to keep going, to win. And he would. With Lucia quickly hopping over the bed, and taking a place on Ashley's shoulder, Pulse floating nearby, and Sunny taking a lookout role, Ashley knew it was time.

"Alright. Let's get to investigating." Both children grabbed onto Isaac, both of them happy to at least be safe- for now.

"We're okay, mister." The daughter says, trying to provide some levity with half-smile. Better than nothing.

The amulet nearby on the bedside table is rather hard to miss, and while Ashley does swipe it to look inside, he winces. Closing it, he places it in his pocket. In truth, it made sense. That Hisuian Zoroark was the friend of the Truesdales, and the amulet made it even worse; a Froslass. A Chandelure. Litwicks, a Gengar, Haunters, Shuppets. Every ghost here was a friend of the Truesdale family, and the family photo within only seemed to make that claim.

"They're all... being controlled? Not just the Zoroark." Ashley had to think about that word in his mouth. Controlled? What else could it be? Most of them must have done this against their will, enslaved to the Butcher. Which meant, their goal was simple. Exorcise.

Of course, if Isaac dared to look at the tables, he would find a violin coated in dust on one end. But it's the other table and the misplaced rug that would probably steal his attention. On the table, a black mirror sits quietly, perhaps a useful tool to bring along? But next to it, a trapdoor. And it doesn't take long for the youngest, the son, to pipe up.

"T-That's the trapdoor... it leads to the chapel. It's really dusty, and smells weird."

Ashley hears this, and turns to Isaac, his Pachirisu looking to curiously.

"Thoughts, Isaac?" Ashley was going to say it. Whatever evil this was... would be worse down there. No doubt. But at this point, if they didn't take it down, the Truesdales would be doomed. So the question was...

Escape with the kids...? Or more fighting? Ashley was leaning the latter, but he didn't want to admit he was thinking of the former.

Oh yeah, that's what it was. The tale. Something about coins over the eyes at death to pay the toll to cross the river. Kep makes it so easy, and though he knows he has to return Bongo, he lets out his trusted Noibat, who perches with a chime onto his head. With Kep figuring out the toll, and Tempest providing them all the fare, it had Ashley shoot him a smile.[break][break]

"Thanks, Temp." It's dismissive. There's a lack in genuine response, not because he doesn't appreciate it, but because Ashley is now on edge. There's something here. Something wrong... just as he pays the ferryman, he seats himself with a seat next to him, as he takes a moment to listen. Releasing Bass the Noibat had a twofold reason; his ears were made for this, if there was a noise, Bass would detect it. No luck though.[break][break]

With the everlovable wingman Isaac, the tease and the mischief, it snaps Ashley back to consciousness, and he tries to shoot a smile towards Kepler and Isaac both. It only helps that Isaac brings up good old days. The camping trip.[break][break]

Things were so simple back then.[break][break]

You know you don't deserve it. Ashley's eyes shoot upwards, and his tension grows harder. Silver eyes up to his Noibat, and his Noibat responds with a head tilt. Which meant the worst case scenario was true; only he could hear it.[break][break]

"Great." he mutters under a breath. He envied the others. At least they didn't have a ghost noise in their ears.[break][break]

Tempest notes to strap in, and Ashley isn't about to say no to what is his superior, so he holds on, but with Isaac's request, he's just about to make good on singing with his quite possibly off-key voice, when the other shoreline grows aflame, and Ashley's silvers lock onto it. "What in the-" Bass' eyes peered out to the other shoreline.[break][break]

What could cause fires like THAT? He grabs at his chest, or if Kepler's hand is nearby, he tries to hold it tightly. It feels like the weight of his sins are wanting to drag him under. Revenge was coming in a vengeful form. Parting the flaming wall, a large bird bursts from it, a gust from wings parting the flames on all sides, as it announces its presence, and makes a mighty roar, with eyes focused on the little boat, the ferryman and the merry passengers now in a predicament, as the Moltres stands before them.[break][break]

It wanted the fair party dead. Ashley's breath hitches, but he immediately makes the call. "Row! If you have a flier, now's the time, we need to get moving. Bass? Play in a tune to confuse it, NOW!" And Bass does just that, making the first move. SUPERSONIC in a myriad of tones to give the fire bird a rather painful headache.[break][break]

All the while, he's not paying much attention to everything around him, giving him a disadvantage for the pain to come.[break]

But when it came time to put Gavin in comparison, Ashley takes a second. At first, he dismisses that impulse, wishing to not judge them when he has had two encounters with Mars, one with Felix, and a handful with the others. But he decides to take the bait.

If only because he wanted to know what Gavin would think.

He takes a breath in, and holds the glass up, taking the chance to do just that; make merry and drink.

"I admire you." It's genuine, he looks forward, not daring to make eye contact. As he has his cocktail now running in his system, he continues. "At first, when we met again outside Trick or Sweet, I thought you would be just like Theo, or Jayden. I had this image in my head, an image that you were going to be a huge prick. That my time in Rocket was going to be hell, and you would set me aflame."

Another sip.

"Lo and behold, you and I did start that way, but then I realized what kind of person you are. You're not like these monsters Rocket made. It's like, you know how to do the job, but you're still you. You're better at this. I envy that."

Another sip.

"Over the past month, I sat in that hospital bed, or laid in bed at home, thinking I can do it, and how to get better. For that... you're like a mentor I want to follow." He sets the glass down. "But... I need someone to show me how to do the things I'm too scared to do. I still want to be an Admin, so... I asked the new beast of Rocket how to get past my fear of death. I can't just rely on you. I have to be self-sufficient too."

What a happy conversation this was going to be.

It's worse. Somehow, it's just... worse. Even with his hand on Kepler's shoulder, even with that reassurance back. With the jokes made from Tempest, or the one made in turn by Isaac joining back in with the group, it's piercing. Like a room sat in alone, white space, and everything just drags him downwards. It's insidious.[break][break]

Everyone isn't feeling right. Ashley isn't feeling right. Nothing feels right. The jokes are helping, but Isaac and Temp truly are fighting an uphill battle.[break][break]

And for some unknown reason, he still feels like he's being followed. He winces.[break][break]

"Ashley..."[break][break]

"Did any of you say something?" He can't help but ask. No one else did though.[break][break]

Still, their journey leads ever onwards, Ash following in step behind his group of men, listlessly moving forward, a hike towards... the river. Green in hue, and by how Temp made a rather angry hiss, it only made one thing clear; no swimming in that shit. Water be wack. That had him wince.[break][break]

"... huh." The mention of the boat from Isaac only does well to unsettle him. He was... correct. There sat a boat, and that little bug onboard really reminded him of an ancient tale. But he has a point. Their suits would at least ensure they would be safe for a time if all else fails, so... as Ashley nods, he decides to be the guinea pig, he walks towards it, doing his best to show little fear. He had to be an anchor here. Envy or not.[break][break]

"I wonder..." He attempted to step onto the ship, but the Gimmighoul holds an arm out, stopping him from moving forward, only to gesture with its little arms for something.[break][break]

Ashley stares. "Huh... boats out. Little guy won't let us on." He almost could remember this tale. Something about a boatmaster Chiron and a river.[break][break]

He swears he heard this tale before.[break][break]

Kurze's Feint Attack hits its mark dead on, and the Cofragigus, taking so much electrical attacks, is too slow, getting the super-effective strike, as it reels back, grabbing at the coffin. Both children race behind Isaac, that moment enough to buy them the time they needed. Kurze had, without fail, turned tables. Because the Cofragigus gave one more cry... and hit the ground.

The electrical assault whittled it down. Kurze got the last laugh.

Echo did a damn good job of locking down the Froslass too, and the best part was, she didn't have the capacity to dodge the Fire Fang, not at all. With a cry, she grabs at herself, a nasty burn on her perfect body, and a dog attached to her. Damned Ralts, she would kill this small fry! With all of her power she could muster, she makes another BLIZZARD. With this, her hail was going to die soon, so she had to make use of it. She would get her revenge!

Luckily for Echo, and Caesar, the Chandelure and Litwick watched on in glee at their defeated Bisharp combatant, and aimed for he squirrel. But unbeknownst to them, Ashley began a counter attack of his own. Nodding to Sunny, he points towards the skirmish. To one combatant in particular. With the static electricity of the carpet, Sunny's Electric Typing lets it continue charging ELECTRO BALL, making the ball massive; four times Ashley and Isaac's heads put together. With a leap upwards, Sunny makes a massive bicycle kick at the Electro Ball. It doesn't hit The Chandelure or Litwick though.

"Bingo."

It hits Lucia. With VOLT ABSORB. And with it, Lucia the Pachirisu charges with an insane speed, a super charged SPARK right into the Chandelure, causing the lights of the room that were already off to break upon the impact. The Chandelure fades, and the room returns to its former state, fainting instantly, and with her speed, after hitting the door, she bounces off the wall, the Litwick doing its best to move out of the way, but too slow to miss the second attack on top of the first; a NUZZLE. With little to not issue, Lucia takes both down, and the hail is easier to see now.

Only one foe left, and in the jaws of the updog. That one was all Isaac's.

He doesn't dare to laugh, because he would never want Kep to think he's ever making fun of him, but watching him slowly understand how this works, puzzling his way to it only takes Ashley's heart more. How can he be this cute? His cheeks are hot despite the chilly air.

He watches Kepler step once, step twice, and when his arm comes out for Ash's forearm, they slide just a bit. In that moment, Ashley's happiness explodes in a moment of pride.

"You did it, baby!" He would celebrate it time and time again, and for the sake of it, pulls him into him for a hug. One armed as he was, Kepler could hear that heart beating.

The kiss would wait, but wow did he want to right now.

If Maple could clap, he would be, but he's too busy with A: not having hands and B: keeping Kepler from hurting himself, as per Ashley's instruction before this whole thing happened. Still, Cloudstrike would get a very fun little slope to jump off of. It was tiny, but cute.

"Okay. You're good so far." he begins, moving to kiss his cheek, the main event would come later. That mistletoe was the goal! "Now. We'll do the two foot glide. Both arms out like you're t-posing, both legs together. We're gonna take this really slow, okay? Squeeze your buttcheeks together when you do it. Stay strong with your core, and march. Like this!"

Ashley would take the moment to skate around Kepler, ensuring not to go too fast as he lets go of Kep, both arms in a T-pose, as he moves one foot in front of the other. His butt is nice and firmed, his core is working, and wow Ash has a nice ass.

"Your turn!" Ashley made it look so easy.

It's then, as the Nidorino's ears detect something, that Reinhardt, quietly turns its head around, trying to pinpoint where the noise originates from. Every step on those four legs is meant to go somewhere. Ashley takes notice.

Felix's words unnerve him though. Owner is wiped? Surely, they wouldn't need to do that, right?

No amount of thinking allowed an easy way out of the situation. They could hold him hostage, but if they were a scout, they had to have a contingency. This whole shelter was a contingency, after all.

It's made worse, by the sounds above, when Reinhardt hears the sounds of another human. While he didn't understand the words, the Nidorino races back, skidding on the steel floor, as it prepares to fight, making a quiet noise, and pointing his horn towards the exit, just as Felix finishes his look over.

"... shit."

The question itself is difficult to answer. On the one hand, Ashley is holding up decently enough, but his decisions since their little descent into those ruins leaves a bad, poisonous taste in his mouth. It's not that he doesn't want to answer, it's that no answer he comes up with sounds good in his head.

"Yeah. I'm good." Maple gives a mew nearby, but Ashley merely smiles when it seemed Shalin was pressing forward. Same old same old. That was good to see at least.

With a bathing Charmeleon in a crater, Ashley put two and two together. Old days in Kanto when he was a kid, he remembered seeing Charizards aplenty. He got the memo, and merely let her handle business. It was nice being able to just relax, not fight or do anything. There is a Trapinch eating rocks nearby, but...

Best let sleeping dogs lie. The way it unhinged its jaw was... unnerving.

The battle seemed intense, so much so that Ashley was almost afraid for a moment that Shalin's Pokeball wouldn't contain it, that inferno looking so painful that he'd need to get a Burn Heal to both Letheia and Rielle. How long had he been here? With the order of the deep voice from above, he can feel himself come back to sanity, as he rolls onto his back. Zev was unflinching, relentless.

There was one thing to report. When the door opens with a creak, a conversation is had. Ashley walks in with his sling, his right arm within the brace as the nurse next to him states something that goes by unheard by Ashley. Because he's staring. No, staring is too kind. He's violently surmising the situation; that is to say, whatever situation there is for Jayden to be back in his fucking life.

The nurse closes the door behind him, and wordlessly, Ashley walks back to his bed, struggling the exact amount to get back into the bed, enough to look like a Scrooge when he curses.

When the blanket gets back over him, all he can do is stare daggers at the bastard. Isaac, he's fine. Jayden was the problem, and a hole in his Slowpoke was the only thing he was capable of. Hurting other people. That's what Ashley firmly believed.

Even though he himself started it. He might even be the origin as to why. He doesn't like that thought. He quickly compartmentalizes it and hisses a curse.

"The fuck are you doing here?"

It's obvious. Cookies. Damn, that sounds better than hospital food, but no amount of cookies would ever let him forget this grudge. Not even a little. Liquid diet or bust.

Wow... Kep had a really cute giggle. Ashley's cheeks heat up as he looks Kepler's direction, appearing like a moron for just a moment. It was obvious to everyone but Ashley he did that, to the point where, he doesn't hear the bedroom door open.

Hearing the sounds of cracking coming from his bedroom, Bass pops out and begins to chime out with his two big speaker ears. Ashley's brow raises, as Isaac and Kepler speak of the Screaming Metal Deathtrap, and Ashley gets up... only to see, peering out from the crack, two white bunny ears. Ashley's silvers are immediately taken, as two beady eyes look at the silver-haired trainer.

"Hey there, little guy... come on over." With the newly-hatched baby Scorbunny, he walks quietly over towards the couch, hopping next to Ash and Kep.

Just as the conversation is getting good!

Ashley doesn't know when or how he starts ruffling the head of the Scorbunny, but he can't find himself stopping, he just DOES. It's like a weird addiction. And as Kepler agrees with him on the matter, and Isaac understands where they come from, but he raises a point. "I guess so. Never got to go to Sunday school, but I do know that Bongo is like my other brain cell. Same diff, right?"

Ashley truly was ecstatic for the people he let in. He had no idea how important his brother in Isaac was... or for that matter, Kepler.

Mostly everyone is present.
