The troop of BRUTE BONNET were patrolling an area dangerously close to their LEAGUE ENCAMPMENT. Despite the danger, however, Audric Black is having an absolute delight observing them from afar with a pair of binoculars. "They're traveling in near-perfect formation... like Spartans! Every flank is covered. They leave no room to be exposed!"[break][break]

The HOUNDOOM sitting on its haunches beside him doesn't seem nearly as excited about it all. Nevertheless, Audric turns to it and his partner for this endeavor with a smile. "Guess we gotta interrupt their little patrol, though, right? Want to take the lead on this or should I?"[break][break]

AZ EXCURSION C: CULL THE HORDE[break]
INTERDREAM MIST AND THE ACTIVATION OF TERA CRYSTALS summon an aggressive army of PARADOX POKEMON. Upon spawning, they rampage and stampede through AREA ZERO. It is likely that if these hostile Pokemon are allowed free reign that they would escape the caves, the chasm, and ultimately invade all of Hoenn, disrupting the ecosystems to an irreparable degree. Stop them before it's too late.[break][break]

It did, indeed, sound like some sort of mating call. But, frankly, it was hard to tell. That sound was just as alien as the monsters that inhabited AREA ZERO. Perhaps it hadn't been a mating call at all. Perhaps it had simply just been a call.[break][break]

"As much as I'd love to investigate that, we need to get out of this with our lives first," He whispers, cautiously taking a gander at their shadowy surroundings. "From what I've heard about the DRK TRIAD, they take a pretty methodical approach to things. Not unlike most scientists." The biologist adds, casting a look down at his Charcadet with a worrying thought.[break][break]

Was her flame too bright?[break][break]

"They're probably just here to—"

And, just then, the two realize why the DRK TRIAD base was likely out in the open with no concealment: it was a trap. A trap for unwitting LEAGUE personnel such as themselves. The HIDDEN POWER that strikes out from the shadows hits Boudica and knocks her off into the bushes before several more UNOWN appear above them. They're surrounded.[break][break]

Audric sighs. It seemed Napier didn't understand what he was trying to get at it. But, then again, the ranger wasn't exactly being forthright with it either. He couldn't blame the other. So, ultimately, he just nods. "Yeah. That."[break][break]

He wasn't all that worried about firepower. BOUDICA had proven to be quite the little spitfire despite her diminutive size. He supposed she might have picked up that talent for destruction from the BLACK MARKET he'd rescued her from.[break][break]

"Let's head down. Quietly, though..." The HOLONITE continues, leading the way down the canyon path as they head towards the black base in the distance. Unbeknownst to them, several UNOWN stalk them from the shadows nearby...[break][break]

An EARTHQUAKE?!

If Audric didn't finish activating the DRILLING RIG now, he feared he never would. Thankfully, Napier is there to save the day with another Pokémon of his, redirecting the GYRO BALL that had been determined to squash the biologist and the rig into one. "T-Thanks!" He says, stabilizing himself despite the quaking ground and focusing.[break][break]

Meanwhile, just nearby, his Appletun casts a LEECH SEED at the SCREAM TAIL to tether it to the ground. Just then, a mechanical roar fills the air, signaling Audric's success as the DRILLING RIG begins to do just what it was meant to do: DRILL. Not only that, but it tethers itself firmly to the ground, too, resistant against the EARTHQUAKE.[break][break]

"Time to go!" Audric exclaims, running over to scoop his Appletun up into his arms before fleeing. "The rig will transmit its data to us later, don't worry! Just go, go, GO!" He urges the other.[break][break]

How were they able to set up such an impressive base so fast? The DRK TRIAD had technology most people in HOENN could hardly dream about. Audric Black supposed he shouldn't be too surprised. The fact that it wasn't concealed beneath some sort of invisibility field was a surprise to him. Both he and Jack Napier could see it clearly from the ridge they stood upon.[break][break]

"You ready?" He asks the other young man, casting an unsure look at him. The CHARCADET standing beside the RANGER seems more determined than both of them combined. "You ever... done this sorta thing before?"[break][break]

The members of the DRK TRIAD were just people, right? What if someone got seriously hurt?

DISMANTLE A BASE OF OPERATIONS CREATED BY THE DRK TRIAD. Grunts from this shadow organization have set up outposts this deep into Area Zero. Though their motives are uncertain, it can be surmised that they too are curious about what this anomalous location will herald.[break][break]

If discovered, these masked, black-clad trainers will use their UNOWN against you. However, their UNOWN do not possess the ability to warp your Pokemon and your characters away to an alternate dimension.[break][break]

Audric's Appletun closed her ears (and, by consequence, eyes) firmly shut as a HYPER VOICE tore through next. There was no doubt about it: Carolina Red was afraid. But, as she peeked out to see her trainer fervently working on the machine, she knew she had to do something. She couldn't leave the Absol to fend for them all by itself![break][break]

With newfound determination in her eyes, the Appletun rocks back and forth before landing on all fours again. Ignoring the scary CRY that echoes throughout the wilderness nearby, she works up the courage to gather a mass of APPLE ACID in her throat and spew it. Just before the SCREAM TAIL unleashes another scream, she finds herself with a mouthful of this acid instead.[break][break]

As the monster shrieks with disgust, rolling around them wildly like a GYRO BALL, Audric huffs and tries to figure out which buttons to push on the rig. "Just a bit longer! I almost got it! I think!" He urges his companion.[break][break]

Unfortunately, the GYRO BALL in question seems to be headed straight for him and the DRILLING RIG.[break][break]

He adds, briefly casting a look in the direction of his Appletun and Napier's ABSOL. Spotting something sticking out from the bushes, however, he narrows his eyes.[break][break]

Then, suddenly, their Pokémon are blasted backward with a deafening BOOMBURST. The territorial, freaky-looking Jigglypuff steps out to reveal her full form. The bad-tempered look on its face can only mean one thing: trouble.[break][break]

As the ringing fades from their ears, however, Audric picks himself back up from the ground and returns to the drilling rig. "You guys keep that thing off me while I set this thing up!"[break][break]

Audric gestures with his hands again, though this time what he's trying to say is much easier to understand: "Nice meeting you! Goodbye!" And, as he backtracks towards the site they'd left behind, his Houndoom follows in tow.[break][break]

With a knack for FOUL PLAY, he and Sheba effortlessly put TEAM ROCKET through a wild goose chase around the woods. At one point, the two even manage to lead an entire squadron into a SLITHER WING hive. The roaring of flame and the chorus of screams that follow afterward are all they need to decide it is time to finally head back.[break][break]

This guy... didn't know? Had the LEAGUE taught any of them how to work this thing? Audric had simply assumed he was the muscle for this assignment. The pack mule with years of RANGER experience beneath his belt.[break][break]

"No instruction manual, no, haha..." He nervously laughs, rubbing the back of his head as he stares down at the thing. "Though I guess it can't be too different from some of the tech I use in my research lab... I'll take a look at it, gimme a sec." He adds, dropping to a crouch beside the mechanism and pulling out its tripod legs to mount it.[break][break]

His Appletun, in the meantime, forages in some nearby bushes. Little does it know that one of the aforementioned PARADOX POKEMON lurks on the other side of it, hungrily eyeing the crust on Carolina Red's back...[break][break]

AREA ZERO is an absolutely beautiful place. Audric Black can't help but imagine this is what the ancient world might have looked like. Well... minus all the giant alien crystals inhabiting it. Oh, and the strange cybernetic Pokémon that wandered about.[break][break]

Perhaps choosing CAROLINA RED to accompany him and his partner on this mission wasn't the best idea. The little APPLETUN likely didn't have as much oomph as some of the rest of his Pokémon, after all. Nevertheless, it keeps a vigilant watch as they reach the DRILLING SITE.[break][break]

Having lugged the DRILLING RIG mechanism on his back, Audric is happy to finally set it down and catch his breath. "You know-- how to-- set this thingup?" He asks his partner between each gasping breath.[break][break]

AZ EXCURSION B: GEOLOGICAL SURVEY[break]
DEPLOY A DRILLING RIG WHICH WILL RUN A SURVEY. Defend against threats (Pokemon and/or the opposite faction) as the rig extracts information from the earth. If successful, analyses will extract spatial patterns for tera crystals, mega stone mineral strains, and contribute to the ever-expanding geological map.[break][break]

Overwhelmed and outnumbered (for the time being), the grunt stood no chance. Nevertheless, Audric commands a SMOG to conceal the direction of their escape. Not long after that, the two rendezvous behind the cover of a large boulder with their rescued LEAGUE personnel in tow.[break][break]

"Thank you, thank you!"[break][break]

"We thought we were done for!"

Despite their acclaim, however, Audric silences them with a single pointed finger against his lips. "We're not out of the woods yet," He whispers, glancing at their surroundings with a hint of a smile. "Literally."[break][break]

Turning to Mikael, he nods. "I'll stay behind and throw any pursuers off our trail. Are you good to take these guys to the closest HQ?" He asks, reaching down to give Sheba affectionate pets all the while.[break][break]
