Leaving Lam to the mercy of the children was probably the hardest thing he's ever had to do. It felt like he was sacrificing his life partner to a herd of angry tauros. The kids were likely no less mean and impatient, so it still meant a lot that Lam was willing to go through with all of this. It wasn't even his job to be there, but he was.

"You okay, little guy?" He said, safely outside where he could deposit the grumpy Snubbull on the ground. The pokemon looked up at him with a touch more relief in his eyes, before bobbing back in forth with a thankful grimace. "You're welcome, I know how you feel. It can be a lot some times." He recalled the treats tucked in his pocket and took out a handful. "Happy birthday."

This likely wouldn't last, eventually the kids would find the snubbull again, but at least he could offer the little guy some space to breathe. He turned in the window and waved at Lam enthusiastically. The kids didn't seem to happy with his bunny partner.

Sitting the snubbull up on a swing set, he rocked it back and forth. "You relax out here until you're ready, yeah?" Then he retreated back inside to a roar of children. "What? I made him vanish, he'll be back from the void in a couple of minutes." He walked over to Lam and linked hands with him. "I think I'm done with this job."

"Oh wow, she's cute. Must be one of those new pokemon they've been discovering." Truthfully, he didn't really understand anything that was going on lately. He did realized they'd only narrowly avoided likely dying from an asteroid and that pokemon were coming over from different parts of the globe. It had a way of making the world seem so delicate.

It was almost as if their lives really were finite, limited blips in a greater expanse. It was frightening to think about now. At least, now that he had Lam in his life. Beforehand, he'd never cared about those things. It seemed exciting to dance with death. Now, he was actually afraid of wasting the time he had left.

"I have no idea... definitely weird, which is usually my taste but..." He laughed at that, not sure if this guy qualified for his tastes even. He looked up at the buzz of a cutiefly. "Aww." It wasn't really his type either so he decided to pass on it.

Maybe it was terrible, but he had already forgotten his affront to the poor shinx. Unlike Rosie, Noodle was a far easier creature to please. Rook was relatively good at persuading pokemon to be nice to him, even if it was out of sheer pity for how pathetic he could be. So, he wasn't worried. He was rather more preoccupied with pleasing his boyfriend and ensuring they didn't fight again. This was a pretty clear message to him though, he had to get his shit together. This was too good of a thing and he couldn't risk losing it. Lam was too important to him.

It was a bit agonizing to pry away at that time, but necessary. Communication was important, after all, that was one of the greatest lessons he'd come to learn. Though the way Lam slowly came back to reality made him grin from ear to ear. It seemed he wasn't the only one of this mindset at least. They were kind of in the middle of nowhere and there was no one here. Sure, maybe there were cameras, but he wasn't bothered. He wouldn't mention as much though considering he'd gotten the okay from Lam thus far.

Rook's breath slowed as lips descended down his jaw and hands slipped beneath his shirt again. It felt electric, like a tether was connecting them. There was no one else in this world, he was sure, that he cared about in the way he cared for Lam. Likely never would be again. And he'd almost gone and messed that up, hadn't he? So stupid. How could he risk this just for an addictive thrill? That was what it was though, an addiction, he'd grown into stealing through the pure adrenaline it gave him. It was nothing in comparison to this though.

"Hurrah!" He giggled at that, leaning forward to give him another kiss. His own hands traveled up the other's back, underneath his shirt. "I love you, so much."

The unexpected truth to this whole situation was that he liked Lam, like a lot. Not that he had figured that to be impossible. After all, what wasn't there to like about Lam? He was handsome and sweet and witty and his laugh was like super cute. It just hadn't occurred to Rook to look that far into things. He didn't really go out with anyone and certainly didn't care to creates bonds with people. Okay, sure, he could be a bit of a hopeless romantic and enjoyed hallmark movies as much as the next 40 year old mom. Yet, right then, it felt different.

This felt real. He couldn't even play it off like it didn't matter if Lam liked him or not, because it did matter. He could feel the prick of anxious nerves at the very thought of Lam deciding to shrug this off and leave, never to see him again. He'd live with that, of course, there was no forcing what wasn't there. But that didn't mean he wouldn't be devastated because it felt like there really was something real here.

Rook laughed at that, resting his chin on a propped hand. "That sounds like you though." Bit dumb of him to say, considering he'd only just met the guy, but it felt like he knew him better than that. He could almost see those paintings in his mind. "You like birds a lot, huh?" That's cute.

Rook reminded himself to keep pace, somewhat. He was only down half a drink when Lam finished his second. It was a formidable pace, so he finished down the rest of his drink as fast as the heat would allow. Only to nearly cough it up. "You do?!" He said dumbly, surprise heating his faster than the little near fall incident before. "I mean — haha I... I like you too." What was he, a high school kid?

Lam was actually cheery this morning, without tea or coffee to wake him from the dead. It was a little unexpected as Lam rushed past him, stopping to plant a kiss on his lips. "Oh. Good morning to you too." He chuckled, realizing he probably should wear his thicker socks. His boyfriend, of course, was not at all prepared for this kind of weather. It was to be expected, they'd yet to plan for it. Rook had been planning on getting him something warm for Christmas, but the frigid weather beat him to it.

"Pretty warm. Gloves and socks are essential because fingers and toes get cold the fastest. You can use my warm jacket." Rook pilfered through the sock drawer before finding two relatively thick pairs of socks for the both of them. His jacket was an easy find, hanging on the inside of the door.

They had a pair of leather gloves and some cotton, which would have to work. He wasn't actually prepared either, now that he thought about it. Lam was practically buzzing out of his skin, ready to go outside. "Yeah, it's made." Rook actually found himself rushing to keep up. If only the other could wake from sleep like this normally, but that wasn't likely to last. It was probably a one-day affair and then Lam would officially be over the snow and the cold again.

"Wait," He rubbed Lam's nose with a gloved hand before leaning forward to kiss it. "Cant have that falling off from the cold. Okay, ready? Probably best to wear the non-holy sneakers, yeah?" He would grab a cup of coffee on the way for the other. It was cute, reminding him of how snow days were for him as a kid. Trying to stop this sailing ship from careening out into the cold, well he didn't make for much of an iceberg.

Isaac made plenty of good points. Really, Rook wasn't sure which was better and it wouldn't be the first time that he deferred to other's judgments just so he didn't have himself to blame. He had a date after this and couldn't very well do that if he was in jail. That would require far too much explanation and he wasn't far enough in his relationship with Lam to go testing those boundaries quite yet.

Either way, it was their best bet. There was a lot more risk factor in sticking around and he didn't exactly like including the bar owner in anything, especially with the likelihood of a blabber mouth. "Sounds good to me!"

They would have very little time to act so it was now or never. "Let's do this." As soon as he spoke, he followed the other through the door. The maintenance halls were damp and dark. The shadows could hide any number of pokemon, but that was far from Rook's worries. He rather enjoyed the critters that lurked in these places. What he was worried about what what existed to the door on the other end. Down stairs, squeezing past electrical units and debris and waste.

"Wow, Lam! I got it." He felt giddy like a little kid on his birthday. It wasn't like he'd never caught a pokemon before, it had just been awhile. After feeling dejected for the past few weeks, even something as small as catching a carnivorous weed was something to get excited about.

Encouragement felt nice, considering he rarely got it before meeting Lam. Pokemon weren't exactly treasured in his family. His dad had looked at them more as pests and Rook had to keep his own in secret. Thus, the very idea of catching them felt like something forbidden and secretive. It seemed Lam was doing far more re-training than he likely realized.

"Oh wow that one is weird! Catch it!" Leave it to Rook to like the weird one and ignore the graceful flowery one prancing past them without a care in the world. Rook was just a bigger fan of weeds than roses, that was all.

"Okay okay, not in my head. I promise." He said, smiling as much as he could. It was true, he could get a little self-conscious over things. It didn't help that he'd made so many mistakes recently and was lucky that Lam was so patient. Following suit with the other, he let Oogie Boogie out. The haunter had been feeling a little cooped up as of late.

"Okay, yeah... good practice. Sure." It was true though. Maybe Lam did have a point even if Rook didn't think there was anything inherently special about his abilities. Even then, the plan to let things happen seemed to be working out. A Carnivine appeared through the thick of the trees, clearly not expecting them there either.

Carnivine were cool, he liked their teeth. "Oh right uhh Boogs, use lick." The haunted happily darted forward, a long ghostly tongue darting out to lash at the carnivorous plant. As expected, it stunned it. Clumsily, Rook pried a pokeball from his poke and tossed it at the Carnivine. "Here goes nothing..."

Rook usually woke well before Lam managed to crawl his way out of the cave of wonders. It was no different that morning as he slipped free, carefully without waking the other (he'd learned his lesson). It wasn't until he'd walked to the front, started the coffee drip, and peered out the window — that he belatedly realized that it was snowing. He had yet to see a real substantial snow in Hoenn.[break][break]
Wait a minute — He gasped, remembered the first date he'd had with Lam. The other had told him he'd never seen snow. He felt something giddy bubble up and he turned on his slipper-clad heels.

Then, he remembered his innate fear of calling Lam forth from the depth of sleep. Was it possible the other wouldn't blame him if snow was involved? Possible. Did he want to bet on that? Mmmmmmm, no. No he didn't. Okay, he could wait, right?

So, he sat down at the kitchen table, patiently sipping at his cup of coffee. Rosie was staring out the window, looking forlorn. The cold made her mask damp, which she didn't enjoy. Plus she got lost in the snow, which was frightening. In all likelihood, she'd choose not to go out until the white hellscape had melted away.

He heard the crash first and nearly spit up his coffee, it burned his throat on the way down. Then, followed the shout for his name. It hadn't occurred to him that Lam would simply be excited. Knocking his knee against the table, he rushed into the other room only to find the other peering out the window like a little kid on a snow day. He felt a little dumb, in hindsight, of course that was what it was. "put on something warm, it's cold outside."

I got these socks with pidgeys on them. I love them, my boyfriend got them. Scarves are nice too. I have never and will never wear hats. Blue and red don't belong together. Do you know how much waste people create from clothes alone? So I rescue as much as I can from dumpsters. It's not weird or gross, it's very useful. Huh? The bandages? Oh it's a tactile comfort thing.

Die? I'm not sure. Yeah, probably die. Guzzlord looks like he has a big personality, that's my kind of scary monster.

I am what you might call a connoisseur of many talents, but a master of none. I am like a human magikarp.

Oh someone whose caring and comforting and gives me a lot of compliments. He doesn't think I'm weird or dirty. Long legs, bed head, smells like lazy sundays and green tea. Literally sleeps like a dead person and is very cranky in the morning, but I like that about him. I'm talking about a person, if you couldn't figure it out. I have a boyfriend, yeah me. I know. We're kind of a big thing, you know. All I had to do was steal from him too.

Painstakingly normal, I'm afraid. But still fun. Personally I prefer ghost and poison and dark, they just have a good time all around.

"What is one thing that would cause you to flip your lid/cause you to become enraged? How do you temper your anger?"

I have carefully crafted a technique, it's called avoidance. It's an art, really. Whenever there is anything remotely of conflict, I avoid it. I see something bad and I'm just "nope" and I leave. I mean I guess if I had nowhere to go and someone was saying something mean, I guess I'd just die. Although, I think if someone was being mean to a pokemon... that's kind of different, ya know?

"What sort of scents are you fond of? Do any scents remind you of any memories?"

Black coffee and spices. Did you know birds have a smell, it's weird but nice. Like the lil soft part under their chin. I'm getting distracted. Birdseed, that's a smell.

I was alone a lot as a kid. Pokemon were... well they weren't just animals you collected and shoved in pokeballs for me. The ones I have now weren't wanted or loved and... guess it was just kind of a personal thing. Oops I got a little carried away, they're fun to have yeah.

"What kind of dreams or daydreams do you have? What are your thoughts on the power of imagination?"

I used to dream of stardom, big stages, loving fans. Then I grew up and it felt a little more like grand delusions. Imagination can be very powerful, not always in a good way. But I don't wanna be a negative nancy.

"He's free to file a complaint against me." He said with a snicker, even if he did feel a little guilty for acting without thought. They were lucky for not crushing the poor little guy under their collective weight and that of the seat. He'd apologize later and give the feline some extra table scraps or something. In truth, he couldn't say he was too apologetic, which maybe said ill about him, but he was a little subdued by the attention he had on his partner.

Little noises slipped out of Lam's mouth as his kisses traveled across skin. Every noise he made was a symphony that Rook felt singularly responsible for. It was a strange thing to feel possessive of, but no one else could do this. Maybe this was the same sensation that artists felt over the canvases they painted on. Fingers raked through his hair, slipped across his abdomen. Every touch was electric and, before much longer, he wasn't going to feel very inclined to stop.

So, he paused, head rolling back into the headrest of the seat. Lam wasn't quite as comfortable usually with certain things, so it only felt right to figure it out before. "Soooo, are we adding public indecency to my charges tonight? Or are we keeping this pg?" It was innocent, 100%. He was just making sure before he went to far. Making out was fun and they could do that for hours like a pair of eager teens, but he had a tendency to push his luck (obviously).

Lam drew away then and Rook sighed, figuring that was that. It was time to drive home if they wanted to continue this conversation, or not (which was quite likely they wouldn’t have time for words). He was a little surprised to find Lam following behind him. “Oh, hello there.” He giggled as Lam slipped through the passenger door and settled on top of his lap. “Irresistible, ain’ I?”

Granted, once the idea got into their heads, there was very little that could deter them. Though he liked how lazy it was, how it made him feel young and dumb and uncomplicated. Lam felt like his other half and he couldn’t imagine a life even half as happy without this. This simple, uncomplicated love. He was the only complication, he knew, but Lam seemed to love him anyways, didn’t he? Wow, how’d he get this lucky?

His hand found the little lever on the side of the seat, which dramatically fell back until they were in a heap. “Oops, my bad.” Despite, he laughed. His hands roamed up the other’s back, settling on the other’s hips beneath the hem of his shirt. His mouth traveled a little more freely down the curve of his boyfriend’s throat.

He didn’t yet recall the fact that Noodles was right then, likely looking very concerned. And also that Rosie was still napping in the trunk. Oh well.

Lam forced his eyes back, as hands planted on either side of his face. Before he could say anything further, Lam was kissing him. He felt his face heat, a little caught off guard as he was corrected before claiming the other’s mouth once more. It was really the only instruction he needed right then as he turned, leaning a little more against the other as he deepened the kiss.

It was a massive relief, like weight removed from his shoulders. It was true for him too, he couldn’t imagine his life anymore without Lam being a part of it. If that meant he had to change to fit into it, well… he could do that, right? He could do that for Lam. Even if the idea of change felt a little terrifying for him, it was nullified by the press of lips. His free hand moved, slipping under fabric until he could draw the warm curve of Lam’s waist.

Rook had little shame, so making out on the hood of the car parked outside of a fast food joint was no big deal for him. Especially not having heard those words from the other’s mouth and knowing that even after everything, he still forgave him.

“I love you, Lam.” He said again, breathing a little heavier between kisses.
