It might have been ironic now, considering he was the one to usually drag these occasions out. As much as he was currently whining about it, he also liked it (though he wouldn't admit as much). Lam was good with affection and touch, it was a language his hands knew well. Rook practically melted whenever the other man touched him, on impact. It was ridiculous. It didn't make any sense how he felt magnetically connected to that contact like his life depended on it.

"To me you are." He said simply. Sure, Lam had his flaws (he could be a little lazy), but to Rook that only seemed to make him more perfect. He was so undeniably Lam and that was all that mattered to Rook. "You better."

Of course, Lam had to use his own habits against him. He couldn't even complain about it, considering it was kinda deserved. Still, he managed a pout. "Well not right now I'm not." Of course, it was one thing to be slow and steady when he was the one in control of it. Much different when Lam used it against him. He wriggled under the touch, stopping just short of the intended target. Rook let out another bratty huff, a pathetically whined: "Lam!"

Only to be rewarded with the contact that made his whole body shiver, a guttural breathy sound slipping free as his body curled under the contact. Any coherent thoughts slipped out of his mind until he was as giddy and love-drunk as Lam was.

It wasn't that Lam had never needed him, but it wasn't quite like this. Rook wished he was more prepared. He wished he knew exactly what to do or say in this kind of situation. All these years, he'd never had to be the person that someone relied on. "I should be fine though, shouldn’t I?” He felt a knot form in his throat at those words. It reminded him of back then, he'd scolded himself for not being stronger when he was in pain. He pulled Lam a little closer. "Lam, you don't have to handle everything. It's okay not to be alright. That's just being human."

It did sting, in a way, that Lam seemed so uncomfortable with it. However, it wasn't him that Lam was uncomfortable with. He reminded himself of that, not letting the disappointment slip out. This wasn't the time and it was selfish to worry that Lam didn't trust him enough. "I'm a big boy, Lam. You don't need to worry about me, okay?" It was true, pokemon were his soft spot. To hear that one had died, especially because of another person, it made him feel sick to his stomach. "You tell me whatever you need to though, okay? Don't worry about me."

At the same time, he wasn't going to force Lam to open up when he clearly didn't want to. Especially not with something so horrendous. All he wanted was to calm him down and support him. "I'll take care of Noodle, okay? He'll be okay."

His hand rubbed up and down on the other man's spine, not saying anything for awhile as the other explained what happened. All he could imagine right then was Lam alone and hurt and scared. It made him wish that he could've been there, but he would have been no help. Just another thing for Lam to worry about. "Lam, I'm so sorry.... I... Come on, let's get you inside." He did know one thing that would help Lam though. Without much warning, he let his arms slip around the other man and hefted him up, holding him like he was a child. Their bedroom wasn't far away.

Lam was all touch, it was how he loved. Rook loved that about him. Setting him on the bed, he planted a kiss on his forehead. "Okay, I'm gonna take care of Noodle real quick, will you be okay?"

Even with the privilege of his life circumstances, Rook often wondered if he'd lost out in the great lottery that is life. For as much power as he'd one day wield (power he didn't even want), he would be entirely incapable of doing the things he actually wanted. His life would be monitored and controlled. There was no power for a king, not really. At least, not for a king like him.

Instead, he'd be controlled by advisors and parliament, strung out like a puppet. No more than a figurehead. He was fine with this, but it also meant that he couldn't love who he wanted to love. There would need to be an heir and his partner would need to be of royal bloodline. No matter how much he insisted that he could do what he wanted and it would all work out in the end, he knew the real likelihood of that.

"I did not cheat, how dare you slander your king." He laughed at that, at the ridiculousness of such a statement. At the same time, he wished it wasn't true. He'd never abuse his power, but others would. They'd use him as a mouthpiece, claim that it was his will. They'd been doing that all his life.

His breath stifled with a ticklish shiver as lips ran knowingly across his skin. If his parents found out, they'd explode. There was no knowing what would happen to Lam. This was wrong, but he couldn't stop himself. "I am mad, look at my face. I'm furious." He bit down on the laugh that wanted to force itself free as he was pulled up. "Is this also part of the training?"

I'll be right there with you. There was more comfort there than he ever might have anticipated before. There was also fear though he couldn't understand why. It wasn't like Lam was going to change his mind upon seeing him face his father. If anything, Lam was there because Rook trusted him to support him. It didn't really deplete the odd feeling of exposure.

He let his head rest there, eyes closing briefly. "Yeah I know, thank you."

Either way, Lam made him feel stronger regardless. Rook was well aware that Lam would have been more than happy to lay there all day and he was half-inclined to allow it, just let himself relax. It felt impossible though, they were too close and he feared that any hesitation would result in him running away from his problems, again.

He got to change his clothes, smiling a little as Rosie slunk into Lam's knapsack. He was so lucky to have him, he couldn't imagine not having Lam around. It was bizarre to realize that all of this had happened out of circumstance. He could have so easily decided to do something different and never met Lam.

"It's okay, Lam. I'm fine, okay?" He tried not to sound insistent or ungrateful for the other's concern, but it only served to make him more anxious and he couldn't deal with that. "Ready to see where I grew up?"

"Yeah, I think so." The whine that was emitted wasn't intentional. He wanted to seem like it was all okay and he wasn't being defeated by a big ol rock. Sadly, his cover was blown. Rook smiled though as Lam helped Bubblegum up, he was thankful because he wasn't looking forward to helping the pink chunk up again.

"I can't imagine it feels much different though." He laughed, shaking like a dog to dry off, but it felt like a wasted effort. At least he wasn't hot anymore, which dramatically helped the queasiness he was feeling. It certainly wouldn't be the first time the heat affected him this way.

He rolled his eyes, but was distracted by a pokemon in the distance. "Ooooh!" He quickly tossed out a pokeball while it was distracted, hoping to catch it.

His fingers were still rooted to the hem of his jersey, knuckles paper-white. Coach must have noticed because his tone changed, a flicker of a question that he didn't actually ask. For a second, Rook felt sick, nodding hastily as he was excused. "Yes, coach, sorry coach." His heart was beating a little too fast. It didn't make sense, but that disappointed tone still carried over, regardless of who it was. Maybe he'd made a mistake, joining the team. He was too soft, too clumsy, and definite too useless at just about anything that required actual skill.

The rest of the team regarded him with the same carelessness as the cones they used for practice, but he couldn't necessarily blame them. He'd done nothing to make himself a valued member of the team. Of course, there were exceptions. Not everyone was cruel and, most notably, there was Lam. Unlike the others, he stuck around. It was the only way he could feel useful.

"Yeah... guess he kinda was." He said, a little absently, picking up the cones that were left out. It was technically Lam's job to do, but he was used to doing it. "Did I? Don't feel like I did." He sighed, realizing he was feeling sorry for himself, again. His eyes darted up, immediately recognizing the way his face heated up upon seeing the other stripping his shirt away. It wasn't like he hadn't seen it before, but lately things had been odd. Well, different. They were different. Sorta.

There wasn't a name for it and he didn't expect anything. His mind started rambling, once again fixated on the freckles on Lam's shoulders. He looked back down at the cones. "Are you sure? Doesn't sound like a fair match up." He laughed lightly, finishing the tower of cones off before kicking one of the balls towards Lam to collect.

When he'd seen Lam off that morning, it hadn't even dawned on him the true danger. Maybe he really was stupid and naïve, but he'd never anticipated that things could actually get dangerous for Lam. It made him was to lock the doors and seal up the windows. It made a very real and selfish fear well up in him because he couldn't imagine what he'd do if Lam hadn't shown up on the balcony that night or the next night or the next. It felt deeper than the fear of loneliness. That at least was a familiar bedfellow that never wanted to feel acquainted with, but next to that kind of loss. What would he do?

He swallowed the knot in his throat, realizing that there was no point in anguishing over potentiality. Lam was there with him, he was safe. That was what mattered. Even then, there was still loss. There was vacancy in Lam's spirit that hadn't existed there this morning. "What happened?" He asked, regretting it as he watched the ball pop open and nothing emerged from within. Oh. The sound was barely stifled, hanging in the air like he'd held a megaphone to his mouth. He swallowed again, but the knot didn't budge this time.

The pressure of the other's head against his shoulder felt unfamiliar, heavier somehow. Usually, he was the one in need of help. He was the one that needed to be picked up or put back together again, but all of his problems felt trivial now in comparison. Stupidly emotional and unearned.

His hands moved around him and he shifted until he was sitting, allowing all of Lam's weight to rest against him. "No, Lam, you're not fine." Maybe he should have encouraged that the other was okay, but it didn't feel right here. "You're not fine but that's okay. That's..." He felt like his mouth didn't fit right around words. "Just tell me what happened."

Rook hadn't slept much, maybe it showed. He'd tried his hardest not to toss and turn, too afraid of disturbing Lam's restful sleep. Then again, not much could stir Lam from sleep so maybe he shouldn't have been too worried about it. Instead, he'd laid there like a heavy, unmoving log for the past 8 hours, interspersed with very thread-bare periods of dozing.

The sound of Jubilife City was still familiar, the soundtrack of his life up unto the point he'd left. It had been a dramatic and emotional exodus from his hometown, not that he'd really gone into much detail to Lam. In truth, he didn't want Lam to hate or pity his life for him. Sure, it hadn't been great, but he still refused to believe it was all that awful (even if that was hopeful oblivion).

Lam was awake, he could feel it even before the telltale stirring that soon occurred. The room only ever seemed to come alive when Lam woke up. A sterile environment slowly saturating with color again. It was like all the warmth sapped out as the other slept, or maybe that was his imagination. Seeing the world in that shade of grey wasn't healthy, nor was depending on Lam to breathe life back into it again. Maybe it was harder after seeing Lam fall apart, knowing that he had to be responsible too when he'd never really felt strong at any point in his life.

He couldn't fall apart, at least not yet. And even then, he knew what to expect. Lam didn't, but he would. Eventually.

"Huh? Oh yeah, I'm sure." No, he wasn't, but waiting easily turned into avoidance. It was a pattern he knew well. Rosie had been reluctant to go and even then she was watching him blankly. It was selfish, perhaps, he wasn't the only one left with scars from the past. Still, he brought her anyways. "What does it matter, it doesn't even feel it." Harsh words echoed, disguise snapped and dragging on the ground. Rosie-red cheeks collecting dirt on the ground.

"Guess we gotta get dressed then." He was tired, still he pushed himself up off the bed.

Rook was a bit of a city boy, apparently.

He wasn't much of a mountain hiker or a traverser of hot terrain. The heat swelled up, sinking into his skin. He was very sweaty already, and they'd hardly been walking more than an hour. Every step-up in their path was a massive obstacle, made worse by the fact that bubblegum didn't seem to know how stairs worked and would cry for help everytime it came to one. He had to haul the fuecoco's fat little body up to the next step, only for him to cry again.

"I'm okay," He said, a little out of breath and completely unconvincing.

That was about the time that orangey spit on him. Watergun, spit. Same thing. He was dripping with liquid that had no defined source and that was bad enough. Still, he didn't have it in him to be angry at a pokemon that was only concerned for him. Did he really look that bad off? "Thanks, buddy..."

Rook knew that he could be critical of himself, often without merit. Of course, it wasn't like he was the only perpetrator of his insecurities. He wasn't king material, he was barely even prince material. Had they another option, he knew his parents would jump at the opportunity to crown another sibling. All they had was Ikarus, who wasn't exactly royal in any stretch of the imagination.

Lam felt like his only escape, his only real motivator and believe. As long as Lam was in his court, he could do anything, but there was a struggle in that. One, he always he felt entirely too afraid to mention. The simple fact was that this wasn't meant to last. One day, things would have to change and he'd have to accept the responsibilities that came with his birth, including all of its privileges and limitations.

Even balanced over him with the theater of triumph, the very illusion of cleverness and wit, he couldn't be permitted the second to think it meant anything. It was as temporary as his advantage over the other in this play-fight. Still, he smiled, a beaming and sunlight-bright sort of smile that only Lam could provoke, right before the smile was stolen by a deviously planted kiss. He pressed back into the other's mouth, even with the threat that their "practice" might be spotted from afar.

None of that mattered, even as his advantage was stolen away and he found himself under the other's weight. Hands pinned and lips pouting, "You cheated."

Lam flinched.

It wasn't outright, but it was noticeable enough to make Rook freeze. This wasn't normal for Lam, who had always been pretty composed under stress. Something horrible must have happened to him and Rook wasn't sure if he was equipped to handle that. What if he did a bad job at soothing him? After so many times of Lam soothing him, he couldn't afford not to be the same way.

He stooped down beside Lam, perfectly fine to stay there with him on the balcony. "Shh, it's okay. You don't need to apologize, I'm just happy you're home." Lam wasn't seriously afraid that he was mad about that, right? Sure, he might have been if Lam had strolled up all nonchalant after Rook had been panicking for that last few hours, but this was obviously different.

"Lam it's alright, just breathe." He placed the flat of on hand to the other man's chest, trying to slow the rapid beat of his heart with will alone. "It's okay. What happened? Are you hurt?"

Clearly, the bruise on his face wasn't painless, but there was nothing life-threatening so far as Rook could see. His other hand moved, locks of hair moving through his fingers. "It's okay, baby. Just tell me what happened."

”Trust me, it’s not. You work it.” Clearly, flattery wasn’t going to work, but he’d take any opportunity to at least try and flatter the other boy. Lam was his best friend and he was lucky to have him. He also knew just how badly his dad wanted to get rid of the kid, but couldn’t because he was good friends with the stable master, among many other reasons.

Even if he forbade him to hang out with Lam, Rook would probably still continue to do so even at the threat of punishment. What was his dad gonna do? Keep the kingdom from him? Oh no, he wouldn’t be king. Rook was aware he had many cousins willing to kill for the position that he was in and he should be lucky. If anything, he made his father seem weak, which definitely made him feel bad. That wasn’t Lam’s fault though.

Lam made him stronger, he was sure of it. Or atleast, the other tried to make him stronger. He just resisted it like he was paid to do so. As far as Rook figured, he’d never get it right so why bother?

Sometimes, he figured that Lam would have made a far better heir. His father had muttered as much, thinking that Rook wasn’t listening. Lam was strong and capable and quick on his feet and handsome and charming. All the things that Rook was not.

”Practice, right. I need more than practice.” He needed heavenly blessing and then some.

His attack failed, of course, but who was really expecting otherwise? Everything was spinning and then, before he knew what was happening, Lam had him dipped like they were dancing. Rook felt his face heat up at the pressure of the other’s arm around the small of his back, the slightest hint of fingers past the disheveled hem of his shirt.

Once he got through the embarrassment though, his mind began to work. At times, he could be rather crafty. Like a crow or a fox. All he had to do was adjust his weight. After all, Lam was holding both his own and his. His foot kicked out and then both of them were toppling down and rolling, vying for the top.

”AHA!” Rook howled as he tried to pin the other boy beneath him.

”You do make me happy.” He said wiping at the stupid tears that continued to leak from his eyes. Stupid, how come he had to cry at a moment like this? It was nice, it was more than nice. Lam made him more than happy. He made him loopy, crazy with happiness. Love drunk and stupid.

It was just hard not to react from this kind of loving attention. Lam made him feel beautiful and flawless and perfect, even though he knew he was far from it. That was okay though, he’d learned to live with it. Maybe he’d made it up in his head, forced himself to see problems that weren’t there. Meanwhile, Lam was just there to burn those imperceptions away with a good dose of loving reality.

His hands drifted down, slipping through green hair. ”You’re perfect, you know that?” He didn’t know how he’d been so lucky, but he was thankful. To think all of this had happened because he’d made a mistake and stolen from someone he shouldn’t have stolen from. Well, he didn’t regret it if that meant Lam was in his life. It felt like the universe was saying “enough of that, you get to have something good in your life for once.”

His skin shivered as those words were pressed to his skin, lovingly placed in a way that was driving him more than a little insane. Lam knew how to draw a reaction out of him and he was beginning to get a little impatient with it. ”Now you’re teasing me.”

He was stress cleaning.

It had turned into a rabbit hole, digging deep into the cracks and crevices of their little apartment. Yet, it did very little to take away the eating dread that was currently pinning him down. Lam had yet to call him. He'd not even taken the time to text back to one of Rook's 300 messages. He was probably being too much. If anything, he was being a major distraction. What if he'd been focusing on his phone when he should be focusing on what was going on around him? What if it was Rook's fault that he was...? He scrubbed until his fingers went red, pressing so hard on the steel wool pad.

It felt pointless, all of this was pointless. He was uselessly cleaning while Lam could be seriously hurt. How could he ever forgive himself if anything bad happened and he'd been sitting there cleaning? It wasn't a positive or remotely helpful line of thought. It was detrimental and selfish and stupid, but it bled through the cracks in his mental defenses until it was all he could think about.

Me, me me — of course. He shook his head with a sigh, sitting back and slumping over against the floor. He was pathetic. He laid there, holding his phone out like at any moment the screen would light up and Lam's name would appear next to the dumb icon he'd set in the address. Lam was out there risking his life and he was contemplating how that might affect him. How stupid selfish could he be? He should have gone with him, insisted on it. Sure, he wasn't exactly a fighter yet and couldn't yet keep up with Lam, but he had a badge. That had to mean something, right?

His squat little pink fuecoco was sitting on the armchair, looking at him with concern. Or at least, it looked like concern. Bubblegum didn't seem to have much going on in his head, but he was cute.

That was when he heard the little telltale screech of Lam's corviknight. He twisted up off the ground, looking around. For a moment, he wondered if he was just imagining things. He pushed himself up to his knees, face red from being smushed against the hard wood and knees achy from scrubbing. "Lam?" He whispered, stupid hopefulness seeping into his tone. The sound didn't come from the front door though. Leave it to Lam to aim for the balcony.

"Lam?" He pulled the sliding glass door aside and finally saw him. His eyes widened, seeing at first the bone-white pallor of the other man's skin, accentuating the blue shiner on his side of his face.

"Lam!? Are you okay?" He crashed down beside him, ignoring the pain of the cement on his knees. His hands sought out his face with as much softness as he could manage in his panic. "Baby, what happened? Are you okay?"
