"I better not be, to you at least." He chuckled at that, giving him a little shoulder bump before quickly checking to make sure the mac n cheese was coming along without issues. Surely, he wouldn't mess up such a simple job as reheating some leftover mac, but he couldn't be too careful with his bad culinary luck.

"What are you talking about? You look daring and dangerous. It's very sexy." It was somewhat true, but more so it just made him nervous. Seeing Lam in any kind of pain made something frantic and bitter coil up in his throat. He swallowed it down, but it rose up whenever he looked at him and could see the bruise forming under the skin.

He grinned at that, "I do love rewards." He was simple in that way, very easy to motivate. Like an over-eager, food motivated puppy. It didn't take much to encourage him, especially when Lam was involved.

His fingers continued to coax through smooth hair as his eyes focused briefly again on the mac. It was about finished. Grabbing a pair of plates, he scooped a large plop of cheesy pasta onto both plates. I love you, He felt something warm stir up in him at that. He'd never get used to that. "I love you too, Lam. More than anything. Now sit down and eat. It's five-star mac'n che's." He fumbled over his words, trying to make it sound exotic.

Rook grinned at that response, leaning forward to whisper another "Mooiissttt" into his ear before dashing away with a giggle. "It suits you, the battling, I mean." He hadn't seen Lam look so eager about doing something. At least, with the gallery, it was enjoyable but he was taken for granted. Now, with this new pursuit, people would be stupid to overlook his obvious skills.

That optimism wasn't just because he was his boyfriend, of course. That didn't matter in this instance, he could see Lam's skill regardless. Even if maybe he was a little motivated by love to champion him. "Yeah well... still try and take some time for yourself." It made sense, of course, eagerness worked that way. He just didn't want Lam to burn out or become disillusioned with his goal by making it into a career.

Still, there was the cloud of darkness that they couldn't ignore. That was also a worry of Rook's, for good reason in his opinion. "I know." He squeezed his hand back, leaning over to smooch him on the cheek. "I'm really proud of you, you know?"

"I used to get bullied by eleven years old, what if I'm bullied again? Will you protect me?" He half joked, though there was a worry there. Like, what if they didn't listen? What if they didn't like him? What if they teased him like the kids back then? He didn't really want to think about it or else he was gonna have a nervous fit.

The kids spilled off the bus, filling the Petalburg woods with the sound of howling laughter and screeches. Rook didn't mind kids, in fact, he really liked them. He just wanted them to like him too, which probably was a bad idea. The woods suddenly felt like a breeze in comparison to the tempest of children, they were the problem. Not the wilderness he'd have to fight through.

"YEAH!" The kids howled in unison, rushing them. It was a little intimidating, have a massive body of children running at them. What if they were SWARMED? How would he survive?

It's just you. Despite everything, Rook couldn't help the smile that slipped on his face at the compliment. "I'm just doing what anyone would do though." Still, he filed the feeling away for later to gush over like an idiot. Lam always seemed to do that to him, drive him a little silly with his compliments. He felt like he was starving for them and Lam so happily fed him.

Right then wasn't about him though or his likely sad lack of self-confidence. It was about Lam, picking him up in the very same way. "Humoring you? How?" He frowned at that, not wanting to chide the other, but it did hurt a little that Lam thought he had to humor him in the first place. "I don't think you seem to realize the importance of my position as the president of the Lam Logan fan club and it's beginning to hurt my feelings."

For then, they separated. He left Lam to dress, though part of him wanted to remain and check every inch of him for damage that Lam would be too proud to show on his own. Rook figured though that he just needed to trust him. He wasn't really making anything, considering his terrible cooking skills. What he could do though was heat up some mac n cheese. That wasn't too terribly difficult, even with a very clingy Lam hanging on to him.

He lifted his free hand, fingers dragging through his hair. "Hiya." A little giggle slipped free, remembering all the dumb times they devolved into no more than a few scattered and breathy "hi"'s.

"I'm sure you did everything you could, Lam." Lam was all about contact, which wasn't something that Rook was used to. Still, he let his hand rub the valley between his shoulder blades, trying as best he could to soothe him. "Even then, you weren't prepared for that kind of battle. No one could blame you for that." It was a big difference, fighting in gyms and fighting team rocket. Those people were heartless, as far as Rook figured. Anyone that would willingly rob or hurt pokemon didn't deserve to have pokemon.

He was quick to return to him, afraid that the distance would send Lam spiraling. The other wasn't weak by any means, but Rook had never seen him like this. "You think so?" He smiled softly, shrugging. "I'm just used to bandaging is all, you know that." Though the compliment was still nice, more than nice. Rook often felt starved of compliments, though Lam was never in short supply of them.

Lam was his rock, but he wanted to be the same for him too. It was a two-way road, this relationship. "I will always be here for you, you know? Anytime you need me and even when you don't need me. Kinda persistent in that way." A small chuckle followed, but it was soft and muted. His hands didn't move from the other, making slow coaxing circles across his skin.

I'm fine. He braced himself for that automatic response, but smiled when it wasn't voiced. "Good, I'm glad."

He sat up a little, "Want me to cook you something?" Or well... heat something up for him, he meant. "It's not too bad." It wasn't nice to look at. The way the bruise discolored his face made something sickly and even angry coil up in him. He wasn't typically an angry sort of person, but Lam was his weak spot. How dare they do this to him, to someone so light and carefree. It wasn't right. "Here, I'll get you some pain medication."

Between the dangers of the wilderness and the foreboding threat of child, Rook wasn't exactly feeling confident. It did help that Lam was confident and enthusiastic regardless of what they did. Rook couldn't help but be worried, about a lot of things. Like what if they came upon a ravenous pack of wild pokemon and he was forced to sacrifice himself for the good of his little tot troop??? What if they got out of control and started being belligerent and everything turned into lord of the flies and he was forced to fight off the children? What if he fell in mud and had an embarrassing stain on his pants that the kids laughed at?

"Eh haha yeah, I'm ready." He squeaked out at numerous other imagined scenarios played in his head. The worst of them all — what if the kids didn't like him and called him names? He hadn't felt this kind of anticipated anxiety since grade school. Bubblegum stood at the ready, blankly staring into the distance, completely unchanged. He wasn't bothered at all, so Rook shouldn't either.

The quick peck did a little to alleviate his worry and, honestly, his acting skills were really working off to keep from seeming too much in distress. "Fifth graders." Not exactly the terrors of middle school, but still high-energy. Maybe it would be less bad. They were young, easy to distract with the wonders of nature, but Rook knew nothing about nature himself.

As the bus screeched to a halt, the double doors swooped open and then the hoard dismounted with a chorus of laughs and howls. Rook prayed to the summer camp gods.

One spit-slathered pokeball deposited into Lam's hand and Rook couldn't suppress the giggle the slipped out. "Extra moist." He slipped over to Lam, holding his hand before walking on. The heat was still a little unbearable but he'd gotten the rest he needed to keep going on their little walk. At least for now.

"Seriously though, I mean... maybe but it's still impressive. Most people wouldn't know how well they work together and even then, you've still come a long way in battling." It wasn't a skill that Rook had, not really. He'd tried his fair share of battles and gyms. He even had a badge, but it had never felt like something he truly enjoyed doing. Not like Lam, at least.

"You been doing a lot of gyms though, lately." Maybe too many, but Rook wouldn't fault him for that. He had drive and that was super impressive and attractive even.

Maybe he was overeager to get this over with. Especially when he'd been the one to prompt this endeavor in the first place. It was nice to have Lam there with him, even if he couldn't help that it sparked a few responses of its own. Park of him couldn't help the mix of embarrassment and defensiveness. He knew that Lam probably had an idea of what his life had been like, simply from how he responded to coming here. Rook wanted to insist that it wasn't all that bad.

His life hadn't been terrible. Sometimes, his dad could be good. Rook hadn't exactly been the easiest kid to deal with. He'd been odd and had a hard time making friends or fitting in. Things had been complex. His fear for going back was that he might discover things he hadn't realized as a child, but wasn't sure what that meant exactly.

"No, it's just a little walk from here." Part of him entertained showing the other some of the places he liked to hang out, but maybe afterwards. He didn't want to lose his drive. They were there for a reason. Though, it hadn't occurred to him until that moment that maybe his father wouldn't be there. What if he moved or something? Rook hadn't talked to him for years now.

Despite that worry, he still walked on, fingers twined through Lam's. The neighborhood had improved some over time. It used to be a trashy and dirty place. It still was, but it seemed the city had cleaned up a little. Even then, it was still clear what corner of town they were in. Not the good kind. His father had owned one of the dodgy townhouses, renting the upper floors while they lived in the basement floor beneath. Clearly, he hadn't put much care into it since then.

Maybe he was soft, he couldn't help the queasy shiver that shuddered down him as Lam told him what happened. He imagined red eyes and slicing claws. He imagined what that could do to soft downy feathers. Even more, it made him realize just what Lam had experienced out there. Rook had always been soft for pokemon, especially those that were hurt. As much as he somewhat craved to follow the same trainer path as Lam, he wasn't sure he had the ability to stomach what that could mean. Not that he believed trainers hurt pokemon, but rather they had to be more brazen and stronger than he was.

"I'm sure you did everything you could for her, Lam. I know you did. There's no one in the world more caring than you. This person and their pokemon sound... cruel. That's not your fault." Selfishly, he wanted Lam to promise never to do anything like that again. Not to leave him behind, at least. No matter how soft he was, he couldn't imagine leaving Lam to struggle alone. Despite his selfish wants, he forced himself to shove them away. This wasn't about him. Carrying him to the bed wasn't a difficult task, even if he felt like he wasn't good enough to provide Lam with true peace of mind.

"It'll only be a second, I promise." After consoling the other, he took care of the poor shinx. Noodles looked worse for wear right then, another snapshot of the chaos that Lam had just endured alone. There was a deep, constrictive twist in his chest — like the air had slowly and painfully been forced out. It hurt, just thinking about it, but he was going to be strong for Lam.

He'd grown good at first aid and bandages, from experience. He hated that he was out of necessity, but right then he was thankful for it. "You're gonna be okay, you can rest now little buddy." Give Noodle a little pet, he let the shinx settle down and returned to Lam. It hadn't been much time, but it was probably too much even then for Lam.

He settled in beside him, immediately pulling him closer and rubbing his back with a flat hand. "How you doing?"

He couldn't help the grin that formed at the little kiss, breaking any illusion of discontent or jealousy. As if he had any reason to be jealous with Lam. Little traces of insecurity might slip occasionally to the surface, but they didn't fester there. "Oh how lucky of me." He giggled lightly, feeling himself bounce on his toes a little. It was hard to tell if the heat on his face was from a natural blush or the blazing heat of the area.

Though Lam was rather quick to tease him again. Still, he leaned back in turn, giving the other a chance to catch an impressive looking charizard. He himself watched a budew awkwardly hobble across the street and vanish past his line of sight. "You know you're getting really good at this," He motioned at the birds teamwork as if that would explain his meaning, he hoped it would at least.

Bubblegum seemed to appreciate Lam's encouragements, which made Rook feel a little bad for not being more encouraging. It was a little difficult right then. Though there seemed to be something of a competition for Lam's affections, which made him laugh. "Should I be jealous too? I don't have a shoulder." He pouted, shaking his head.

"Yeah he was cute, right?" Maybe not in the way he appreciated but he still liked big dogs (even if he preferred cats).

"Yeah yeah yeah, rub it in why don't you?" He scoffed, but his attention didn't last as his attention zeroed-in on a Venipede. Before the little guy could see him, he whipped out a pokeball to catch.

"Yeah I'm fine, just... kinda tired of disappointing people." It went deeper than that, but he didn't know how to explain it without feeling like he was being whiney about it. The last thing he wanted was for Lam to think he was a downer to be around. Normally, he was a pretty optimistic and goofy guy. It was just difficult lately for him to stay so sunny all the time.

If anything, he was simply glad that Lam wanted to be around him. Still, he couldn't help but wonder why the other boy seemed to like him. Not that he was going to complain about it.

It was nice that Lam was willing to practice with him. Granted, it was probably just to pay him back for the algebra help. Rook liked studying with the other, it made him feel useful. Lam was smarter than he gave himself credit for, but Rook figured he was like that too (constantly underestimating his own abilities, that is).

"Yeah?" Slowly, a smile started to take root, "Well, I have been working on it a little. Even if I don't know what to do after that point. Kinda freeze up whenever I get the ball... the hard part, I guess." He wasn't always the best at thinking on his feet. Hell, he was lucky if he could go without tripping over himself.

"Are you planning to go easy on me?" He scoffed. "Hey, I don't need you to hold back." Immediately after, he realized he actually probably needed that assistance. It felt too humiliating though, like bumpers up on a bowling alley.
