A brow lifts, his smile sharpens.[break][break]

The peal of laughter that follows isn’t mocking, but it is wise. “The answer to that is a tricky thing. You’ve handed me a double-edged sword.”[break][break]

If he were to say yes, it would be easy to quickly deem him as arrogant and presumptuous about where this might lead. If no, he shifts into a liar or a snob.[break][break]

“I would say the answer to your questions depends on what you are looking for.”[break][break]

The cutting edge of his smile dims, though, in the wake of her own answer. Mirrorlike, her words bounce back like a familiar echo. Coy and veiled and heavy with ache.[break][break]

“Yes, all the time.”[break][break]

His hand lifts as he smiles, fingers curling as if he were about to allow the back of his knuckles ghost across the curve of her cheek in a gentle touch. Then they twist like they might’ve tucked under her chin to tilt it up. He does all of this without truly touching her. Not even to dust feather-light against rose-tinged skin.[break][break]

“Yes, Miss Reyes. I would go so far to say the interest is assuredly there.”[break][break]

Close enough that if she wished for the contact, all she needs to do is lean into it. It is static, sparkler bright. A warmth he has allowed himself in some time—though he knows that this too will fade and cool just as the rest.[break][break]

Still, it is nice to entertain. Particularly when it seems she understands what he means when he says it exists every day like the weight of a rain that hasn’t broken yet.[break][break]

She knows this particular brand of hollow longing.[break][break]

Had they been elsewhere, he might’ve chanced indulging in that touch. Would’ve allowed his hand to settle there under her chin so that the pad of his thumb could press against the plush swell of her bottom lip.[break][break]

Would she allow that?[break][break]

“Misery does love company, does it not? Or, distractions, at the very least?”[break][break]

Despite the violence of their activities, Enzo felt a certain sort of comfort in returning to it. Whenever he’d been tasked with these one off missions–either on his own, or with a temporary partner, it had never felt quite right. Or the same as it had been when he and Kosei had been working together. Even if Enzo had made many jobs difficult or unnecessarily complicated, there was a particular understanding and cadence to how they worked together. Unspoken agreement in how to handle things. It was a relief that that hadn’t seemed to change.[break][break]

“Well then I am feeling moderately better.” His hand waved dismissively, though insisting as much hadn’t kept him from sidling up to Kosei. It was alarmingly easy to do when they were off on their own like this. Without prying eyes scrutinizing them. Maybe he should’ve been wary of that, but he wasn’t. Not anymore.[break][break]

“Oh, do you want me to give you my five point plan with photos? I would’ve thought you’d prefer a speed run. Or puppy dog eyes,” he laughed in turn, shaking his head. In truth, despite gunning for this exact opportunity, Enzo didn’t really have as much carefully planned as he made it seem. Mostly, he just had sentimentality to bank on, which was…more vulnerable.[break][break]

But of course, Kosei couldn’t just say yes right from the jump and allow him to avoid those soft, exposed justifications.[break][break]

“I’m not saying it would be,” he shot back, before sighing and at least attempting to let the clipped edge fade from his tone. “But it would be better, would it not? I’ve always told you there’s no use in pretending.” Even before Kosei had left Rocket, it’d been a routine reminder. Enzo might dress himself and play at classier than he actually was in the here and now, but that didn’t mean he denied those worse parts of himself, either.[break][break]

“It would be nice, if you were close,” he added, carefully slow and quiet, “that’s all. And…there’s always a place for you at the Nimbus, though I feel like you should already know that.” Even if it had been Enzo’s project and goal to begin with, they’d started it together. He’d never truly forgotten that.

[attr="class","text"]“Never did get out to Snowpoint, though maybe I should make the trip now.” Skiing and winter lodges had certainly never been in an affordable price range in those early years of his life. Astra slipped up beside him with a quiet wuff. Idly, his hand lowered to ruffle sunset-hued fur.[break][break]

At the description of Galar, Enzo tutted. “Sounds disappointing. Particularly at that age.” The conversation rerouted back to him, however, and he picked through his words carefully.[break][break]

“Mm, Alto Mare, for the most part.” A scoff of laughter bubbled up, allowing him to gloss over Sinnoh. “Someone’s curious,” he remarked, though the amused smile that hooked the corner of his mouth up belied the fact that he wasn’t truly defensive.[break][break]

After all, his earlier years in Rocket weren’t exactly secret so much as, maybe… unexpected.[break][break]

“Ah, well. I wasn’t exactly quite so…” he trailed, pausing to search for the right word. His nose wrinkled slightly. “personable, I suppose. Or put together.” A street rat only in those beginning stages of playing dress up, really.[break][break]

The rustling of nearby pokemon in the bushes went unacknowledged as he reminisced. “Probably one of the only abroad assignments my, ah, work partner and I did. And for good reason. He was a prickly, nervous wreck, and I was good at pushing buttons. We’d been sent off to collect a loan, and interrogate a deserter while we were at it. We’ll just say that I preferred more creative methods, than my partner’s preference for being straightforward.”[break][break]

In short, he’d always been a wild card where violence was involved. It was always fun, though. “I goaded him a few too many times, and it came back to bite me. Though, we were typically at each other’s throats more often than not.” In more colorful ways than one, he didn’t add aloud.[break][break]

He shrugged, nostalgic smile still present.

He deflected the subject back to her, careful to avoid the fact that he’d more than simply visited Sinnoh. As far as most were concerned, Enzo was native to Sootopolis, not Alto Mare. But surely it wasn’t a misstep to say he’d been there. Or perhaps if it was, it was a calculated misstep.[break][break]

So he’d claim. He wasn’t really sure what sort of game he was playing at just then.[break][break]

“Did you enjoy Galar?” he asked as he reached the pokeball he’d tossed, and stooped to pick it up. “The climate seems nice.”

[attr="class","text"] “So you say, but I’ll prove you otherwise,” he argued before pulling the lever on the machine. Granted, he was only able to prove his argument because of the luck that came with winning out of the next set of numbers. Regardless of the sheer luck, he still fixed a smug little smile at Kosei. “See? I can walk away now.”[break][break]

So long as the tables didn’t turn.[break][break]

The dinner was superb, but as the night wore on, and the call for the concluding fireworks came, Enzo found himself eager to step out onto the balcony and away from the chatter and music still in swing. Normally, he never tired of the noise and everything that Yumi had arranged for was excellent and a testament to her planning skills.[break][break]

A moment of quiet, though, sounded nice. Even his bickering with Kosei slowed its normally steady pace as he yet again dragged the other to their next destination–out the balcony doors and into the cool dark. Rather than step right up to the rail, he settled for a more secluded corner off to the side.[break][break]

The sizzle and crack of sound intercepted murmurings of quiet conversation as Bright blooms of color lit the night sky and colored Kosei’s profile in different hues. He’d (mostly) behaved, so could he deny himself from leaning up to pepper kisses along the other’s jaw? No. No he could not.[break][break]

Probably shouldn’t have been canoodling in a shadowy corner, but eh–it was late, and he didn’t really anticipate anyone paying them much mind. (Hopefully Yumi Hasegawa didn’t spot him, then he’d probably be in for a question or twenty.) Even that particular concern was tucked away in the back of his mind, though.[break][break]

“Terribly late, though, isn’t it? Can’t say I’m interested in taking the ferry now.” His chin propped on Kosei’s shoulder. The gesture was practically domestic of him. “Let’s just get one of these nice, redecorated rooms, yes?”[break][break]

The coy little smile on his face, however, was telling enough of the fact that he’d planned as much– of course, he’d already booked a room. The key card was, in fact, already in his pocket. “C’mon, I’ll get all those flowers out of your braid one way or another.”

[attr="class","text"]Brief silence fell between them as they walked, and for the first time in a while, he found himself curious as to what might come of their trip, and consequential conversations. He was prone to keeping his cards close to his chest. Everything about his past shrouded in a fine layer of intentional obscurity.[break][break]

As it stood, there was only one person around who knew about his life prior to Hoenn. But would the fact that he’d come to value Yumi nearly as one might a younger sister shift his openness? He wasn’t sure.[break][break]

Normally, that would be cause for internal alarm bells. It was strange that for the time being, they remained silent.[break][break]

Soon enough, the rustling nearby belied a wiry lucario. A sharp whistle sent Astra darting forward, the wordless command all that was needed to set her against it. The lycanroc let out a low wuff before the earth erupted under the jackal’s feet and a STONE EDGE slammed into it. Enzo paused, if only to send a pokeball hurtling toward the lucario before his attention returned to Yumi.[break][break]

His face twisted in thought as he did the mental math. “Oh, several years ago now. Once the hotel really took off, I suppose I didn’t travel quite as far as I used to, when I worked at a lower level.”

He certainly doesn’t look like the fragile sort, at least.

From his pocket, he whips out a cigarette tin and lighter, fishing on free and clamping between his teeth before offering it toward River– a friendly offering. Best to stay nice if they’re going to spend all night cleaning up league intrusion.

“Can’t say I do,” he says, words muffled as he peers up over the crowd again. He lights the cigarette and inhales before nestling it between his knuckles. “Probably gonna be someone a little more…pristine, maybe?”

Enzo hums in reply to the question, curious. “Huh? What, you think I was as posh as my suit?” His grin as he meets question with question.

Everything that could’ve gone wrong with the job they’d been on, probably did. All because Enzo had maybe gotten a bit too big for his britches, but there was no way in hell he’d cop to that. Not to someone like Kosei, who’d only use it as a means of justifying being boring and by the book.[break][break]

Where was the fun in that? So maybe he liked to be a little rowdy. Where was the fun in not making games of it? He still got the job done in the end, so what did it matter if the process was maybe a little more colorful than Color Inside the Lines MgGee. cared for? It wasn’t like Enzo was bad at what they did–he was actually terribly good at cleaning up Rocket’s loose ends.[break][break]

Usually, the people they were pulling information from or disposing of for deserting didn’t slip their bonds and run.[break][break]

Usually, they didn’t run into a room with a handful of unrelated witnesses making some shady business deal.[break][break]

Usually, it was okay to pay for silence rather than have the need to enforce it.[break][break]

It wasn’t like their superior had said it was a sensitive case that required no witness when he’d—okay yeah no, he’d definitely been very clear about that. But they’d taken care of it so there was nothing to worry about. They’d turn in their report the next day and Mr. Case File would be none the wiser.[break][break]

Only he’d ended up busted up real good and maybe his shoulder was dislocated. He’d probably have to stitch the split in his skin over his brow bone too. Whatever–he’d had worse.[break][break]

The real storm was the one he was sure was brewing. Kosei had been eerily silent since they’d finished up and begun the slow slink back to their shitty little apartment in the lower end of the city. So much so that as they finally got back, Enzo thought it was only a matter of time before he imploded.[break][break]

But maybe he could sneak off. He whistled low. “Some Friday night, huh? Alright, well, goodnight.” He swiveled on his heels to retreat in the direction of his room. Nevermind that it actually wasn’t much later than ten. An unfortunately early night for them.

Even if it was in the past and he no longer harbored any more deep resentment for how it had played out, it was still something he’d be hard pressed to forget. In the weeks that had followed, he was fairly sure he’d replayed it in his mind enough times for it to stick there forever. But he’d been young and stupid and headstrong.[break][break]

And maybe five or six years wasn’t really all that long in the grand scheme of things, but that had been time enough to feel a lot further away from how he’d used to be. Even if that version of him still lived somewhere under his skin and showed up in little habits like frugality over things like food and cooking versus dining out. Or a particular brand of mouthiness and lack of poised formality that only Kosei managed to provoke.[break][break]

Enzo shrugged then, “But even if I was mad, didn’t mean I wanted to find out you’d been given the chop.” He wasn’t that vindictive. Usually. Not with the people who counted, anyways. Maybe that wasn’t so obvious because the people who fell into that camp were few and far between.[break][break]

“I do know you,” he retorted, grin lopsided as he peered down at Kosei, “no more than an overgrown puppy as far as I’m concerned.” He felt himself tugged down naturally as the other unfastened the knot of his tie. Not quite able to help himself as he leaned forward to kiss the underside of his jaw. An inquisitive hum wordlessly asking if he should continue.[break][break]

Though the reassurance did draw a belated snicker, “Good to know. If that’s so, maybe you should call me Luca right now. See what happens~”

[attr="class","text"] In the time that had passed since Yumi Hasegawa had transitioned from working under him at the hotel to running her own establishment, Enzo had come to find it strange to not see her floating around The Nimbus. At some point over the last several months, she’d become a staple presence without his having realized it.[break][break]

In a way, he supposed he missed her seeking him out with suggestions on how to spruce up this or that aspect of the business, and how it was presented to the public.[break][break]

So when Casino Starlight made a successful re-launch, it felt like a sound idea to invite her out. Both to celebrate, and to relax after the amplified stresses of both a launch as well as a large-scale event back to back.[break][break]

“Of course,” he replied with a tilt of his head in her direction, “it’s a well-earned respite.” Though he’d perhaps forgotten to be as diligent with his breaks as he’d once been when he was younger, Enzo certainly knew the benefit in relaxing.[break][break]

Even if it was now a tad more difficult to step away from The Nimbus as it once had been. Even more so than the days where he’d conclude his tasked assignments and cases by holing up somewhere like this to rest before the next gig popped up.[break][break]

In fact–[break][break]

“Well, I’m a longtime guest of this particular establishment,” he remarked, a chuckle slipping loose as she prodded him. “I like a well kept hot spring, what can I say? I don’t think I’ve been here in quite some time, though.” Behind him, Astra plodded along, sniffing the air curiously.

A short laugh followed her serious turn. Amusement filtered into the sound and Enzo watched her fall back into planning mode, though after a beat he reached out to rest a hand on her shoulder. “It’s already to envision your goals, so long as you don’t get prematurely swept up in them. For right now? It’s probably okay to enjoy your excitement.”

He could admire her practicality, however. It was something that he always made the effort to maintain for himself, after all. It was good that she wasn’t already getting ahead of herself.

“Rocket does own the building, though. I can assure you that I did at least double check that prior to visiting today. As for any other details regarding sale and ownership, I leave that to you.”

Enzo, while having made an offer of financial assistance, was not about to hold her hand through the entirety of the process. Negotiations and contract signings were all for her to figure out. Along with management and contracting of outside sources. But that was just a part of the process. And he had a decently assured feeling that Yumi would do just fine for herself.

It had been why he’d hired her to assist him at the Nimbus in the first place, after all.

“I think that sounds like a solid starting point. Let me know what you find out, and we’ll go from there.” He was happy to offer advice, so long as she asked. “I look forward to working with you, from here on.”
