had put it much more eloquently in her notification of absence to him, but the gist was there. Her concerns about the DRK Triad, the faction conflicts that gripped Hoenn. How she, as an Avatar, was attempting to save their region from an impending apocalypse. [break][break]

If her claims were to be believed, it all seemed like such a heavy burden for a twenty-five year old. One of his students— former, now. She should have been here, focusing on her studies, living a normal life.[break][break]

Closed in as he was here within his office, ’s instincts screamed at him to look for any kind of protection from the threat that posed. In his panicked mind, his academic sanctum was rapidly devolving into flashes of the brutality he’d experienced in the Ultra Deep Sea.[break][break]

He may have looked unscathed on the outside, but the scars ran deep.[break][break]

The mention of ’s name, however, momentarily snapped him from his fight-or-flight response. [break][break]

His office had become a second home by this point: anatomical diagrams, botanical etchings, sketches of various natural scenes all hung up between oaken bookcases, crammed to the brim with scientific texts; coffee laced with a subtle splash of bourbon; the glare of a computer screen.[break][break]

The end of the semester was swiftly approaching and, as ever, deadlines loomed over ’s head. He’d been sequestered here for weeks on end, leaving only for the bare necessities or if had somehow coaxed him out for a small break. Otherwise, work consumed him.[break][break]

And he preferred it that way, especially in the last few years. Gideon’s career had always been a dependable distraction — his lifelong crutch. [break][break]

But there was no ignoring when she burst into his office. Confusion lined the professor’s face for only a few seconds before he recognized her. Her face loomed in his darkest thoughts, after all. [break][break]

The tattoo, the pink hair peeking out from beneath her hood. The bandages, too, though those felt more like an echo of recognition than the more distinct, gut-wrenching reminiscence currently draining the blood from his face.[break][break]

His chest ached at the sight of her. Not from recalling some foregone memory of a time long past, but from where her boot had broken several ribs, puncturing a lung and almost leading to a painful death. The pain she’d caused was a daily reminder of his own mortality and helplessness. [break][break]

Slateport City was lucky enough to have a governing body that had invested substantial resources into the Parks & Recreation department, especially in terms of the city's largest greenspace within the upper district. The park was a sprawling gem where even the most jaded urbanite could stretch their legs and unwind in nature.[break][break]

And for people like Dr. , whose museum of natural history was right down the road, the park was the perfect place to take new interns interested in entomology.[break][break]

The PICHU quickly warmed to the professor and his Pokémon. Before long, the energetic rodent was dashing around the research site, weaving between legs, and generally being an oblivious menace. It would be cute if wasn't concerned about the integrity of his soil pit. [break][break]

Heading this off before it became a problem, the professor captured the PICHU in a Safari Ball.[break][break]

Unfortunately, one potential problem lead to yet another. Enticed by the sounds of potential prey, a curious LITTEN emerged from the brush, its head on a swivel as it looked around for a meal. With PICHU off the menu, Gideon decided to have ROTOM simply THUNDER WAVE the LITTEN before he captured it. Easier than trying to shoo it away.

To Gideon’s mild surprise, all of the commotion set Scribe a little on edge. Small smarks escaped from its tablet casing – a sure sign that it didn’t quite like how big and boisterous the GREAT TUSK tended to be.[break][break]

Coincidentally, these sparks drew in a small PICHU from the scrubby underbrush, who stared up, awestruck, at the floating ROTOM.[break][break]

“He likes you,” Gideon commented, kneeling down beside the PICHU. The rodent backed off a little as the professor approached, but was quickly enticed back by Scribe’s mesmerizing light.

Putting itself between it and the VAROOM, the giant pachyderm swept its trunk in retaliation, sending the Single-Cyl Pokémon practically flying into a nearby tree.[break][break]

Knocked unconscious, took this opportunity to capture the interloper with one of his Safari Balls.

With its final push into the earth, the GREAT TUSK had completed its intended purpose. The ground had been excavated enough to see a better view of the soil layers here and how they may have changed over time, depending on environmental factors and possible outside influence.[break][break]

"Hmm." Gideon mouthed quietly, intently studying the soil.[break][break]

His concentration was decidedly broken by the sound of an — engine? Here? Turning, the professor saw a seemingly-aggressive VAROOM speeding toward him... and his excavation site![break][break]

"Stop it!" He demanded, gesturing for his GREAT TUSK to intervene.

With the FLETCHLING captured, Gideon moseyed over to pick up the newly-filled capsule before turning back to assess his GREAT TUSK's work.[break][break]

"Good. Keep going. A little deeper over here." [break][break]

The enormous Pokémon shifted its weight — as much of an acknowledgement as would get — in preparation to do what the professor considered to be quite the interesting gesture.[break][break]



GREAT TUSK pawed the ground in a similar fashion to how a DONPHAN might. Was this a remnant from those who'd dreamt up this abomination, skewed as it was in comparison to its inspiration?
