“Yeah,” she repeats dumbly, smile turning a bit sheepish.[break][break]

It isn’t a lie, try as she might to remain neutral and casual. Even as she stands there, her stomach is twisting itself in knots, wondering how she can repair the damage she did.[break][break]

The cubchoo is still in her arms as she follows after him, though she sets him down once she has to pick up a smaller pair of skates. He’s not as theatrical as the octillery, but he does watch the other pokemon with obvious interest before he sneezes out a cloud of frost.[break][break]

“Uhhh, not as good as I would like to be,” she admits with a laugh before waving a hand, “don’t worry, though. I gotchu. Just don’t fall on me, I don’t think I’ll be able to catch you quite as easily.” The mental image of him awkwardly waddling across the ice causes a giggle to slip free.[break][break]

With little hesitation, she steps out on the ice and manages a wobbly twist so that she can turn back and wait for him.

It wasn’t until she’d finished eating, and she could hear the sounds of the old comedy coming from the living room that Calla slipped from her stool and set her dish in the sink. Furia trailed after her as she made her way to where her brother had settled with the biggest of the boxes, and she suddenly felt like maybe this wasn’t as good of an idea as she’d initially thought.[break][break]

“Yeah..” her own voice had grown quiet as she settled next to him and peered into the box. “It feels like so long ago.” And yet, not all that long at all. Worn out clothes, books and journals with battered covers and dog-eared pages from the nights where she stayed up and scribbled the furious, tumultuous thoughts that were constantly tumbling around in her head.[break][break]

She hadn’t looked at them since they arrived here, and managed to scrape together enough to stay in this apartment. Start building new lives that Kanto and their absent parents had never been able to offer them. Maybe it would be nostalgic to flip through them again, or maybe she didn’t need to do that at all.[break][break]

For a moment, she simply watched the items come out as Kieran lifted each one. Then she offered her hands out to better sort the stuff. “Yeah, it might be better that way, you know?” she replied, brows knitting together. “It’s like all this extra weight we don’t need anymore.”

“Yeah, that would be creepy,” she deadpanned, though the dry look she shot him had the barest curling of a smile at the corners of her mouth. A bluntly delivered joke.[break][break]

In all honesty, she sort of figured that this wasn’t a new and original idea on his end, but maybe for once she was choosing to humor his antics– just a little bit. And he’d been right, she did need the break from her coursework. Not that Calla was keen on admitting his rightness.[break][break]

Try as she might to hop down on her own, Calla knew she’d only wind up tripping and landing on her face. So her hand settled in his, and she let him pull her down until her feet touched the ground again.[break][break]

She couldn’t stifle the laugh that followed, “Define 'wayyy more spontaneous.'”[break][break]

Following after him, she wasted little time in hunkering down on the blanket, and pulling another one up over her lap so that she could stick her chilly hands under it. “What’s that mean?” She had no idea. Full of tricks, this one. Her nose wrinkled up in exaggerated distaste. “Oh, that’s way too corny. Do girls usually fall for that?”

She barks out a laugh, “Oh, in that case, let’s just cancel your next meeting and go to the ranger office in Slateport while we’re on a roll.” There’s no way Cal would cut it as a ranger. Well, maybe she wouldn’t do too bad, but that’s definitely her brother’s wheelhouse, not hers.[break][break]

The way he scoots away isn’t lost on her. She definitely notices the creation of space, even if the fact that they were so close wasn’t exactly an intentional thing. And of course, she knows that she only brought that on herself with her weirdness that night.[break][break]

Still, she can’t ignore the sting she feels[break][break]

Chewing on her bottom lip, her glance flits up to him, and then away as she shrugs the bad feeling off. Just keep pretending it’s okay.[break][break]

“Well…I don’t know, maybe we can go to a drive-thru somewhere..? Because there’s no way that sushi survived…” Her own stomach rumbles, clearly of the same mind.

She can’t help the way her expression brightens as soon as he appears in front of her. As neutral as she should try to be, that lightness still seeps into her smile.[break][break]

How can she not, with him beaming at her like that? It’s enough to make her face feel warm. Though the cool winter air is a good excuse for the redness in her nose and cheeks.[break][break]

“Yeah, it’s…nice to see you outside of work.” Bundling the cubchoo in her arms she stands up, and before she can think better of it, she blurts, “Of course! I thought of you first.”[break][break]

Quick to look down, Calla’s turns flustered and she quickly seeks a distraction, “The skate rentals are over there.”

A familiar calls out to her, and Calla begins to turn in search of her friend with a smile beginning to spread across her face. She didn’t know marilee beaufort would be here! Unfortunately for her, she doesn’t see the snowball coming for her. Though it was targeted at her back, as she turns, it pelts her in the side of the face instead.[break][break]

She shrieks immediately, hands lifting to swat away the cold snow melting against her cheek and sliding down her neck—threatening to seep under her jacket collar and cause a chill. “You're gonna pay for that Kier—“ she grumbles, automatically misplacing the blame on her brother.[break][break]

But as she whirls, she catches a familiar flash of gold eyes and a trademark smirk and her face pitches in a glower. “Oooh you…” Distracted from her work, Calla scoops up handfuls of snow and then marches up to Liam Cassius without another word. Pout puffing her cheeks, she lifts up on her toes and shoves all that snow right in his face.

For all of her normal grumpiness and even-keel presentation, Kieran Roth was undoubtedly good at provoking her more childish and competitive side. Maybe that was just an innate thing for brothers to do, but their level of cutthroat brutality when it came to snowboys and different sorts of games was next level.[break][break]

That said, she was going make him wish his snowboy had never been born. Er, rolled together.[break][break]

"Sand is nowhere near the same as snow," she retorted, not looking up from where she was kneeling in the snow, fastidiously packing together the most pristine ball she could manage. Then she would roll it larger, and that would be that. It was all about technique. "So yes, I do think so." It was only then that she glanced up, shooting her twin a smug look. "Try not to bear hug yours this time~" Because yeah, of course she hadn't forgotten last year's debacle.[break][break]

Even if he suspected foul play, she was innocent! That was all Kieran's own clumsiness. Her cubchoo...Cubby, sat in a little snowpile nearby. Turning, she fixed a little set of stantler antlers to his head. "Hold these for me while I build this okay?" The tiny bear sounded his agreement, and shook some powderized snow from his fur, which caused the little bells on the antlers to jingle brightly.

When Calla was little, all she wanted more than anything else, was to to be a figure skater. There was something about it that stuck with her, even now. Of course, then her knee had been busted and that removed any sort of professional athleticism from her goals list.[break][break]

Not that circumstance would’ve allowed it anyway. Paying for lessons as a child had been virtually impossible. And besides, there was no way that she had anymore skill than the people she watched shuffling along the ice in the makeshift rink from where she sits on the safety of a park bench.[break][break]

She has friends she could’ve probably texted for this. Heck, she could’ve dragged her brother out. But that’s not who she wants to see right now, so the text is typed out and her thumb is hitting the send button to woosh away to Uriah before she can think too hard about it:[break][break]

Of course, as soon as she does this, her stomach twists up nervously given the last time they were out and the mess she’d made of it, but there was no taking it back. Idly, she strokes the warm fur of the cubchoo contentedly sitting in her lap.[break][break]

It’s a decent enough distraction.

“You’re just humoring me,” she replies with a laugh, eyes rolling. She’s definitely made it worse.[break][break]

But it was a valiant effort. Maybe. She should’ve probably brought along someone a little less foreboding than the abomasnow. He’s usually a gentle giant, though! Really![break][break]

Calla should really know better, though, given that her brother is a ranger and prone to giving her fun facts about what he’s learning as he goes through training. Even so, she’s never had a smart head for training. Maybe she should get better at that?[break][break]

Or maybe she just wants to be a little impressive at the end of the day, even in something that isn’t in her wheelhouse.[break][break]

They have no choice but to leave the 2v1 match to peter out, and she doesn’t really think about how close she is standing to him as she peers around the trunk of the tree again to make sure it’s still going okay.[break][break]

Then she laughs, that spike of adrenaline affecting her just as much. “Just barely! I thought we were gonna get squashed.” Like their sushi probably is now…

Behind them, Rufus bellows—clearly annoyed that this is interfering with his long nap. They are right in between the scuffle that kicks up immediately, as her abomasnow retaliates to the HAMMER ARM with a heavy hit of his own. Though the WOOD HAMMER might only serve to make it more mad when coupled with the simisear clinging to its back.[break][break]

Food forgotten, Calla reaches back and secures her hand in his as the stuffuls scatter as they try to retreat.

She manages to take his hand, though, and let herself be pulled up from the carpet. Fumbling toward her designated side, she crawls under the covers and lets her weight pressing into the mattress become her focus. Yes, maybe she should sleep her weird mood-ruining energy off.[break][break]

What Calla would like to do is tuck herself closer. Or find his hand to curl hers into it. Those no longer seem like wise choices given her awkward avoidance of his confession.[break][break]

So her hands remain held close to her chest, face burrowing into her pillow as she lets her eyes flutter shut. And when she answers, her voice is quiet. Maybe tinged with the slightest bit of regret. Just maybe.[break][break]

She can’t help but feel like she’s made some sort of massive blunder. He definitely hasn’t misread anything. What he senses is there, but it’s also daunting and she’s not used to handing that off so easily or willingly.[break][break]
