With the conflict de-escalated, Gunner allowed himself to come down from the adrenaline high of battle. He stood still amidst the ebbing flow of security guards herding away the captured Rocket operatives. What little struggle remained in them was quickly quelled by glares from the staff's Pokémon.[break][break]

At Gunner's side, Caelia reverted to her usual form. But he didn't pay her any attention; she was a veteran, as he was, and did not need praise for her fighting.[break][break]

Instead, he stared at Isaac with a frown. "You talk a lot," the agent said as he crossed his arms over his chest. "Were you trying to reason with them?"[break][break]

He jerked his thumb over his shoulder at the retreating backs of the prison's newest residents.

Caelia staggered backward from the force of the Golurk's attack, knocking into the other Pokémon that had been summoned by Team Rocket, a Gigalith. Thankfully, the security staff's own partners had been able to subdue it; they now rushed at the rampaging Golurk while Caelia recovered from the blow.[break][break]

Jumping back into the fray, the Blaziken tore at the Ghost-type with a final NIGHT SLASH. Under the barrage of attacks from the other Pokémon, the Golurk bellowed and collapsed to the floor, unconscious.[break][break]

Immediately, the prison staff's Pokémon turned their attention to the remaining opponents: the Team Rocket grunts engaged with Isaac. In an instant, the enemy was surrounded.[break][break]

"Drop your weapons," Gunner demanded as he stepped in the space between two hulking Machamps. He launched into the typical arrest statement as several guards arrived to put handcuffs on the captured terrorists.

Paper lanterns illuminated the courtyard, casting a gentle, warm glow upon the various food stalls set up along its perimeter, the ancient tree in its center, and the people who'd gathered for the Tanabata festival. Gunner stood among them, hanging a small piece of paper on one of the tree's branches.[break][break]

"What'd you wish for?" mila alexopoulos asked as she finished hanging her own paper.[break][break]

He chuckled. "That's not how wishes work, Mila. If I tell you, it won't come true." A sly smile spread across his face as he regarded her. "Why, what did you wish for?"[break][break]

She didn't answer him, instead matching his mischievous look with one of her own. Linking their arms together, she walked him through the crowd to a narrow, stone-covered path that led deeper into the surrounding forest.[break][break]

"I'm glad you're back," she confessed once the darkness of the trees' canopy enveloped them. "The apartment isn't the same without you in it. It's more boring."[break][break]

Here and there, other lamps hung from low branches, but their light was even softer than in the courtyard. The result was a private, intimate atmosphere, perfect for a couple seeking a romantic rendezvous.[break][break]

Gunner wrapped his arm around Mila's shoulders, pulling her into the warmth of his embrace. "Are you saying you missed me?" he teased her.[break][break]

In the dim light, he didn't see her blush, but the way she curled against his side expressed her vulnerability. "So what if I did?" she murmured, her words betrayed by the tenderness in her voice.[break][break]

His smile grew fond. "I missed you, too."[break][break]

Words gathered in his throat, urging him to speak them into reality—words he had turned over in his head more than once, while lying next to her at night when she was sleeping.[break][break]

"I love you."[break][break]

Mila stopped walking, forcing him to stop, too. She raised her face to his, her eyes wide and brimming with joy. Gunner could not resist; he leaned down and kissed her, pouring the full breadth of his emotions into the gesture.[break][break]

She kissed him back eagerly, reaching up to wrap her arms around his neck, to run her fingers through his hair.[break][break]

And when they pulled apart, she beamed at him. "I love you too."

Gunner had followed Penelope back to the HBIC headquarters building, her silent shadow. The agitation radiating from the councilwoman was palpable, so thick that one could almost reach out and touch it.[break][break]

He knew better than to let it brush against others. He waved off anyone who dared approach. His eyes communicated to curious onlookers what he dared not express in words: Keep out of the way. She's fine. Don't ask questions.[break][break]

In that way, he was her shield.[break][break]

Back in her office, Gunner closed the door and locked it without question. He turned to face her, only to be greeted by her narrow back as she leaned against her desk.[break][break]

He took three steps across the room toward her. When he spoke, his voice was low and quiet. "What happened, Penny?"[break][break]

A storm of razor-sharp leaves blew through the lobby as the Serperior fought back with LEAF STORM. Gunner's Salamence took the brunt of the attack and raked a DRAGON CLAW across the enormous snake's body. Blood splattered as its shriek filled the air.[break][break]

The Serperior's trainer tried to aid his gunman friend, but the Hydreigon intercepted him. ASSURANCE threw him backward several feet into a nearby wall. He crumpled on the floor, unconscious.[break][break]

Gunner ignored all the sounds around him. His world had narrowed to the gunman in his grip. Thankfully, a third-rate criminal was no match for a trained League spy. Gunner swung his elbow at the other man's head, smashing his nose bloody. With a cry, the thief released his gun to grab at his face.[break][break]

Wrong move. Gunner snatched up the pistol and launched a kick at the other man's stomach. He fell to his knees, doubling over with pain.[break][break]

Gunner pointed the gun at its former owner and took a moment to take in the scene. The building's security guards had rushed to the scene by then and were trying their best to control the crowd. The head of security ran over to handcuff the two prone thieves.[break][break]

From what Gunner could see, the civilian with the Espeon had laid low the third criminal. Once all three robbers were cuffed and under guard, and their Pokémon subdued, Gunner walked over to the younger man.[break][break]

"That was very stupid," he said, frowning. Absently, he switched on the gun's safety and removed the magazine of unused bullets. "But also very brave. Nicely done."

Exhaling noisily, Gunner looked around her office, as if seeing it for the first time. He hoped, in time, the strangeness of everything that should be familiar would fade.[break][break]

"I'm going to check on Paxton. You know where to find me if you need me," he said, offering Penelope a reassuring smile. "I'm not far."

Gunner was about to send his Pokémon into the fray when one of the bank's customers yelled at the thief with the Salazzle. A flash of light later, and a powerful wave of psychic energy unleashed from his Espeon.[break][break]

Shit, Gunner thought as people screamed and scrambled to get away from the battling Pokémon. The robbers yelled, trying to impose their will. The bank teller sobbed as she shakily collected all the till money.[break][break]

In the chaos, the agent broke into a run. His two dragons leaped into the air to distract: the Salamence slammed into the Serperior with STEEL WING while the Hydreigon attacked the robbers directly with BREAKING SWIPE.[break][break]

Meanwhile, Gunner charged straight at the man with the gun. He snatched the pistol in one hand, forced it to point at the ceiling, and smashed the thief's elbow with a quick chop. A strangled cry escaped his lips as he tried to rip himself from Gunner's grip.[break][break]

BANG! The gun went off, the bullet piercing the ceiling. Civilian shrieking reached a hysterical pitch.

Gunner shook his head, hearing the defensive snarl in her tone. Normally, when someone pushed him, he pushed them right back. But with Penelope, he knew he had to remain calm. The last thing they needed was a fire in the HBIC headquarters.[break][break]

"Not at all. I'm implying that we're more than a little rattled by whatever just happened. Me, Concordas…"[break][break]

He paused and glanced down, allowing more vulnerability to reveal itself. When he looked back up into Penelope's eyes, he hoped she saw it in his face.[break][break]

Whatever Isaac had planned, Gunner chose to let the man work without aiding him. If he was an Avatar, then he had no need of the assistance of mere humans. So the agent focused instead on the Golurk.[break][break]

Perhaps Isaac thought letting a berserk Pokémon rampage around the prison unchecked was the best plan, but there was no way Gunner was going to risk it causing damage to the building and freeing any prisoners.[break][break]

"Caelia! Queen's knight to one!"[break][break]

The Mega Blaziken leaped away from her flailing foe, bounced off the ceiling, and returned to strike with AERIAL ACE. The Golurk's fist connected, smashing into her with HEAVY SLAM.

Gunner walked alongside his brother through the cemetery just outside Fallarbor. The somber stroll was their ritual every month: they greeted their grandparents and cleared away litter from the tombstones before heading into the town for dinner with their parents.[break][break]

"It was good," said Gunner, understating the emotions he was still in the middle of processing. "I got to see some friends and catch up on what's currently going on in their lives."[break][break]

"I imagine they're focused on rebuilding and restoring normalcy."[break][break]

The younger Graves nodded. "Yeah. It's going to be a challenge, but overall, I got the sense from everyone I talked to that they're full of hope for the future."[break][break]

Gideon smiled. "That's good."[break][break]

The two men arrived at the headstones for their grandparents. A bouquet of flowers lay withered on the ground; Gunner picked it up and replaced it with a fresh set. Meanwhile, Gideon carefully pried some creeping moss off the corner of the small monument.[break][break]

"What about Sayori? Did you find her?" he asked, broaching the topic with great care.[break][break]

Gunner stilled. "No. They don't have individual graves for those who were killed en masse. But they built a memorial to remember all those who died, so… It's good enough, I guess."[break][break]

He tried to keep the disappointment from showing on his face, but he'd never been good at hiding his emotions. Seeing this, Gideon reached out and grasped his brother's shoulder in a rare display of empathy.[break][break]

"It's okay. She knows, Gunner."[break][break]

The younger man was silent for a long moment. Then he nodded, accepting. "Yeah."[break][break]

Gideon drew away. "Come on. Let's go see Mom and Dad."

Gunner stepped into the main lobby of Macro Cosmos Bank's main building in Slateport City. Behind him lumbered his Salamence and Hydreigon, their dark eyes sweeping the chamber with a predatory intensity. They had emerged from a hallway leading to the security room, where Gunner had gotten a rundown of the building's security systems and staff.[break][break]

Overall, the bank seemed well guarded. Their suspicion that they were about to be robbed seemed to come from general unease about the state of the region.[break][break]

The HBIC agent could not blame them, of course; Team Rocket's activity had increased around the time of the meteoroid and did not seem likely to decline. Not with tensions so palpable between the crime syndicate and the League.[break][break]

The line for the bank teller shuffled forward. Then, before Gunner's eyes, the first three people in the queue burst toward the teller's window. One pointed a gun at the startled employee while the other two released Pokémon of their own.[break][break]

"This is a robbery!" one of the men—the thieves—yelled as his Salazzle breathed fire to keep several patrons and their companion Pokémon at bay.[break][break]

"Give us everything you have!" demanded his accomplice, the one with the gun. "Hurry!"

The seal lurched as Isaac drew his hand back, though only by a bit. Gunner connected several dots at once, not liking any of them.[break][break]

Supernatural powers such that Isaac was displaying meant that he was an Avatar. Another one, like Remiel Calcifet, who had come to his senses months ago. Once more, suspicion crept into Gunner's mind. Why had he not heard reports of these ice-based powers from previous battles?[break][break]

At least they explained why Team Rocket wanted to kill Isaac so badly. Though Gunner did not want to believe him, Navy's reports confirmed that several attempts on the defector's life had already taken place in Dewford's hospital.[break][break]

While her master pondered this latest development, Caelia saw what Isaac was trying to do. She leaped upon the Golurk's chest and dug her talons into the cracks of the seal. Using NIGHT SLASH, she ripped it clean off.[break][break]

The Golurk screamed in a feral, haunted way, sending a shiver down Gunner's back as he remembered dying at the Border. Berserk now, the Ghost-type lashed out at those nearest to it—namely, the Team Rocket agents locked in combat with some security guards.[break][break]

"Shit!" one of them shouted as she ducked the massive hand. "What the fuck happened?"[break][break]

"You made the biggest mistake of your life," Gunner said as he stepped into the fray. His voice had roughened with a raging fury. The Key Stone on his tie clip gleamed and shone.[break][break]

Caelia transformed, her feathers changing color. Ribbons of flame wreathed her wrists.[break][break]

She opened her beak and aimed a FLAMETHROWER point-blank at the Golurk's face.

Between Paxton's Sigilyph and Gunner's Raichu, the Cramorant had nowhere to go. Enid wrangled the bird and shocked it until it spat the ring out. She scooped up the small object with the wide part of her tail, then SURFED back to shore and offered it to Paxton.[break][break]

"Thanks, Enid," Gunner said, scratching her behind the ears. She squealed with delight before showering both men with saltwater in a furious wet-dog shake. Her trainer sighed, then turned to his friend.[break][break]

"No, nothing like that. I just saw the crowd and wanted to know what was going on." He tilted his head at the retrieved ring. "So that ring… What does it symbolize? Do you remember how you got it?"
