The text from could not have come at a better time. Gunner had just taken the day off from both HBIC and law firm work to unwind after such a grueling experience at the Ancient Tomb. He shot back a quick reply confirming he would meet Angelo at Lilycove, then made a short trip to the supermarket to pick up some beers and snacks.[break][break]

While Angelo provided the meat of the meal (no pun intended), Gunner brought pre-cut watermelon, ready-to-grill vegetable kabobs, and a couple bags of chips. He raised his haul in greeting to Angelo upon arrival at the beach.[break][break]

"Hey, good to see you," Gunner said, warmth suffusing his voice as he gave the other man a bro hug.[break][break]

Which was not how he would have greeted Angelo just a few days ago. At their last meeting before the battle against the Ruinous Beasts, Gunner had given Angelo a firm handshake and a polite smile. Now, however, both gestures felt too formal, too distant.[break][break]

"I brought some goodies," he said, setting up his purchases near the fire.[break][break]

Meanwhile, Gunner's Raichu hopped over to the shallows where Angelo's Lycanroc played. The mouse squeaked a greeting and splashed her paws in the low water.

Mila's hands on his cheeks felt so soothing. Gunner let her wipe away his tears, each passing minute in her arms enough of a reassurance to dry his eyes. He accepted her lie, allowing it to settle into his heart.[break][break]

It did not matter that in a week's time, or a month's time, they would be screaming at each other again. Throwing things. Hurting each other. Caught up in their emotions, they could forget the pain they caused each other for a moment.[break][break]

That was their curse. And curses be damned.[break][break]

Gunner leaned back in, the tension leaving his body as he kissed Mila again. His hand pressed against the back of her head, gently urging her to tilt up into him.[break][break]

"I missed you," he murmured between kisses, each one increasing in fervor, communicating his unspoken need. Gloved fingers stroked her hair. His other hand held her fast against his body, unwilling to let go.

"Arancini," Gunner corrected without thinking, a habit of his few liked but friends tolerated. Upon uttering the word, he recalled the taste of freshly fried dough, crispy on the outside, soft and piping hot inside. They were always stuffed with a savory combination of cheese and pork, or sometimes oil and vegetables.[break][break]

Had he eaten them before? Try as he might, he couldn't remember.[break][break]

Sitting next to Skyler on the couch, Gunner cracked open his beer bottle with practiced ease. He took a swig of his own before replying.[break][break]

"Yeah." He picked up one of the arancini balls but did not bite into it yet. "I don't know that I ever considered you a friend. Acquaintances, definitely. Friends, though? Not yet. Not really."[break][break]

He took a bite and chewed pensively, then offered a portion to his Umbreon. Laudine took a delicate bite of the snack before ducking back under the table.[break][break]

"But now I feel like we've been friends for a long time," Gunner continued, glancing sidelong at Skyler.

Skyler's invitation to come inside felt nostalgic, a jarring emotion considering Gunner had never set foot on her ship before. However, what he could only describe as muscle memory took over as he started up the ship's gangway.[break][break]

Despite the fact Skyler was clearly in the middle of work, Gunner did not ask if it was a bad time for his visit. He had a strange sense that he'd interrupted her work before, had even helped her with it.[break][break]

So instead, he asked, "I am feeling a bit hungry. What'd Angelo make this time?"[break][break]

Mila withdrew from him sooner than Gunner wanted, but her reason was understandable. He wiped the tears from his cheek with the sleeve of his jacket, but the moisture-repelling material only smeared the wetness across his face even more.[break][break]

"I just got back from an operation that went… wrong."[break][break]

Gunner was never more grateful that his job was a secret. He couldn't describe what happened even if he knew how. Hopefully, Mila understood the confidential nature of his work and knew better than to ask.[break][break]

"I thought I'd never see you again. Not like before, either. This was different."[break][break]

It sounded so cheesy out loud, yet Gunner had never been more honest with her in his life. He held her close, as if she was sand that could slip through his fingers if he loosened his grip, even by a fraction.

A light breeze ruffled Gunner's hair as he walked down the pier toward the two ships owned by . His Umbreon, Laudine, trotted at his side.[break][break]

After the battle at the Ancient Tomb, the special agent had been surprised to receive an email from the ship captain. Prior to that day, they had only exchanged correspondence related to work. This time, however, they'd agreed to meet to talk about what had happened.[break][break]

Gunner and Skyler already had something of a friendship before the battle. But afterward, he felt an unexplainable sense of familiarity toward her. Though he hadn't mentioned it in his emails, he did hope that their conversation could shed some light on that feeling.[break][break]

"Skyler?" the man called out from the docks. Standing in the shadow of her warship, Sotally Tober, he craned his neck to look up at the deck. "It's me."
