Barely twenty-four hours had passed since the battle outside the Ancient Tomb. Gunner still didn't know how to feel about everything that had transpired. His memory felt patchy, some of the events crystal clear in his mind, others so murky they might as well have been dreams.[break][break]

One thing was for certain, however: his relationship with Summer Atreides had changed. And they needed to talk about it sooner rather than later.[break][break]

Gunner had called her in the morning and, after asking how she was feeling, had invited her to meet him at Slateport Park. At first, he'd considered suggesting one of their residences, but he thought better of it in case they fell into their old habit. A public place that still allowed for some privacy was better.[break][break]

While he waited, Gunner spun the silver ring around his pointer finger. Its plain surface held no clue as to why he suddenly possessed it, but not wearing it felt wrong, too. A part of him knew without any reasonable explanation that it belonged to someone important, someone he cared for, but no face or name came to mind.[break][break]

Finally, he caught sight of Summer approaching down the paved path. Stuffing his hands in his pockets, Gunner waited for her to reach him before offering her a small, tired smile.[break][break]

"Hey. Thanks for agreeing to meet me here."

Summer did not sleep well that night. Something about being in her bed, in her penthouse, seemed odd. The staff that shuffled about welcomed her back like they did on a daily basis, as though she hadn't been gone for a couple of decades. One of them, Marianne, had even taken to her in concern.[break][break]

"Miss Corleone? Are you feeling alright?" she had asked.[break][break]

Summer had been quick to dismiss her fretting, as well as their attempts to get her to eat a meal on the basis of she wasn't hungry. Nausea still churned in her stomach, only subsiding as she showered. She stared at herself in the mirror that night.[break][break]

How did it all happen? She wasn't going crazy right?[break][break]

The morning came, and she answered Gunner Graves's call. The time was set, and she'd go to meet him at Slateport Park.[break][break]

Wearing a casual sundress, Summer looked rather out of her element from her typical fashionable outfits and accessories. The only thing that she wore with it with the ring around her neck she noticed when she opened her eyes and found herself back in Hoenn. Her golden gaze rested on Gunner, tired and filled with a hidden confusion.[break][break]

The last time she'd seen his face, he was graying, wrinkled, and aging.[break][break]

"Of course. It's a nice day..." Summer mentioned, her eyes trailing around the area. Unlike Galar, it was sunny and warm. Hoenn seemed so full of life instead of the dullness that was haunting their former home. Or dream?

The dissonance at seeing Summer as a young woman again felt so unreal that Gunner almost didn't believe she was the same person. He tried to recall the feelings of being in love with her, the anxiety and fear over their unborn child, and the apprehension of what their relationship might become.[break][break]

But none of that came to him at the moment — neither the good nor the bad. He simply felt an acceptance and peace that felt decades old.[break][break]

"Walk with me?" Gunner offered, half-turning to proceed down the path.[break][break]

Their pace was slow, leisurely. He kept his hands in his pockets and walked with a small distance between them. A friend's distance.[break][break]

"I feel like I'm dreaming," he admitted, unsure where to start their conversation. "Like I'll wake up and be back in my house by the wall. But the more I try to remember the details, the more it seems to fade. Why was I even living there?"[break][break]

He shook his head, not expecting Summer to provide any answers. Instead, he glanced sidelong at her and seized an opening for the real topic at hand. "I remember what happened to us, though. Do you?"

Summer nodded, taking a couple of strides forward to reach his side before slowing to the comfortable pace that was set. She held her hands behind her back as she looked around the park, tangling her fingers together idly. Her brain was churning, so much so that she almost didn't catch he was beginning to speak again.[break][break]

She didn't meet his gaze at first, focused on a man and a woman, sitting side by side. They were laughing, probably talking about their future or reacting to a cheesy joke. Her hand instinctively rose to the ring on her necklace, tracing over the pattern before she looked away.[break][break]

"I remember a few things. Like I was treated as a queen. There was something important to me. And..." she trailed off.[break][break]

"Yes. I remember what happened to us." Though it echoed in her mind like a nightmare, she remembered walking away from him in the alley after his accusations, telling him not to touch her in the hospital room as she tried to force him out after the poison had consumed their child.[break][break]

"It's still here, Gunner. Whatever happened in Galar, it didn't affect the baby in the real world. So... what do you want us to do?"[break][break]

Summer stopped walking, turning to face him. "We discussed it before. But it was after the poison made me sick. We have a chance now to decide our future before its taken from us... and I don't want to play the villain in your story." She reached out, to touch his arm, though she paused. She held back and withdrew her hand.[break][break]

Because Summer wasn't his lover anymore. And she knew that quite clearly from the memories in her mind.

Gunner exhaled through his nose, the truth that she still carried their child weighing down on him like a stone. He recalled turmoil in GIDEON GRAVES's expression, the pain and despair in Summer's voice, and the relief that had flooded him.[break][break]

He stopped walking when she stopped, and turned toward her when she turned.[break][break]

"I thought about this a lot last night, after I got home. Whatever feelings I had for you before… they're gone now, Summer. But I still care about you as a person. As a friend. And the last thing I want is for you to experience the trauma of losing the same child a second time."[break][break]

Gunner's expression softened as he regarded her.[break][break]

"Neither of us deserve to be villains, and you deserve a happiness I can't give you. But what you want to do with the baby…"[break][break]

He shook his head.[break][break]

"That's not my call to make. It's your body carrying it, not mine. I can't be part of its life, but I'll support whatever you decide to do."[break][break]

With her wealth, Summer didn't need him to pay child support. She could hire nannies to watch the child, should she decide to keep it.[break][break]

"You miscarried before. You miscarried in our memories." That moment twenty years ago had felt so real. He refused to acknowledge it as a dream. "I'm afraid you'll miscarry again."

Gunner's words didn't hurt or sting. Summer had lived in a world for twenty years feeling the same way. Though many parts of it were hazy, she could feel that she fell in love with someone else, and in that time, she was perhaps the happiest she'd felt even when she was living in Hoenn.[break][break]

The smallest of smiles cracked on her features as she noticed his softened gaze, this time reaching out to take his hands into hers. She squeezed his much larger ones with her own, which shook slightly from emotions she tried to push away.[break][break]

"Thank you," she whispered, her voice almost too quiet to hear as her eyes welled with tears. Summer wasn't upset with Gunner.[break][break]

But she was afraid that what he mentioned was probably right.[break][break]

Her gaze dropped down for a moment, composing herself before she released his hands. "I'm afraid you may be right. Maybe it was a warning of what is to come. I'm still early enough that I can—"[break][break]

Summer didn't finish her sentence though. Gunner understood what she meant, and she didn't want to break down in the middle of the park. So instead, she swallowed the rest of the sentence, nodding instead. "I don't want it to suffer either."[break][break]

With her mind made up, she decided to slowly trek forth again. Her gaze trailed the bricks on the path extending in front of them.[break][break]

"But I have another pressing matter I think we need to talk about. Work."

Summer took his hands in her smaller ones, and all Gunner felt was the fondness one held for an old friend. He squeezed hers back as she struggled to compose herself.[break][break]

"I'll go with you to the clinic and stay with you during the procedure," he said, hoping his tone was reassuring enough to console her. "I'll help pay for it, too. It's the least I can do."[break][break]

Though there would still be pain and emotional trauma, Gunner hoped that his presence would make both easier.[break][break]

He matched Summer's pace as she continued their stroll through the park. "Work," he echoed with a sigh, acknowledging that Copperajah in the room at last. "So you remember that, too."[break][break]

In that dream of Galar, the factional divide between the League and Team Rocket had fallen apart in the wake of a mutual threat. But here, in Hoenn, he was still employed by the HBIC. His identity as a secret agent could not be compromised by the crime syndicate.[break][break]

"So you work for them? Team Rocket?" he asked in a low voice, seeking confirmation.

Summer laughed, though it held no humor. It was dry, holding back emotion as she tried to restrain her feelings. It was an inappropriate response, but how else was she supposed to grieve in a place like this?[break][break]

"You don't have to pay... but I would appreciate your support," she admitted, finally letting go of his hands.[break][break]

"Just buy me coffee and something greasy after, okay?"[break][break]

Pushing the worst aside, Summer decided to face their next topic head on. It was more business-forward, and she was more equipped to handle it than the prior one.[break][break]

"I do. I remember seeing you rip off your mask. You had a weird distortion device for your voice — it was still there when we came to back in Hoenn," she recalled, her voice lowered in case there were any passerbys.[break][break]

Her eyes closed, breathing in before nodding. "Yes. I do. My family has been allied with them for many years, and I was raised as one," she answered, offering a genuine answer rather than forgiveness.[break][break]

"And you're a spy for the HBIC. You were tasked to see if I was a member of Rocket, right?"

Of course. Summer Atreides of Lion Heart Trading Co. had all the money in the world. She could afford a medical procedure that could spare herself only more sadness. Emotional support, coffee, and greasy food, on the other hand, were definitely within Gunner's abilities.[break][break]

"That I can do," he said. "Just tell me when and where, and I'll meet you there."[break][break]

That matter was settled, then.[break][break]

Summer's admission to being a member of Team Rocket did not instill the feelings of rage or betrayal Gunner had expected to feel. Instead, the information felt like old news. News with which he'd already made peace.[break][break]

"I was," he said. The smile had vanished from his sober expression. "I'm sorry I deceived you." He'd apologized already, but it felt right to do so again.

Gunner really was sweet. Summer had missed this, their tender moments they had shared before their fight with the SKELEDIRGE. Even in Galar, these moments felt different. Perhaps they were held back because of the war.[break][break]

It reminded her of why she had fallen in love with him.[break][break]

They came across a park bench, where Summer decided to sit for a few moments. She rested her hand at her side, patting the seat for him to join her.[break][break]

"We both lied to each other," she murmured, clasping her hands together as she watched a BUTTERFREE fly by. It's wings were brightly colored, and the way it flew reminded her of a dance.[break][break]

Freedom.[break][break]

"I'm sorry I never told you. I thought about it a lot, if I should tell you. And I made a decision that I was at some point. But, I was so afraid after we fought. I didn't want to ruin everything when it was already so tense."[break][break]

Summer bit her lip, sucking in a breath before she looked over at Gunner.[break][break]

"What are you going to do with me, since you know the truth?" she asked hesitantly.

Gunner sat as Summer bade, leaving a polite distance between them. He crossed his arms over his chest and sighed. "I haven't decided yet," he admitted. "I know what I should do."[break][break]

Turn her in, of course. Declare her a criminal through her support of a terrorist organization.[break][break]

But something in Gunner stayed the metaphorical hand that could crush Summer's throat. It was not the affection he held for her when they were dating, but a deeper and stronger bond. One that overcame the divisions between their groups, one that felt almost familial.[break][break]

"But it sounded like you wanted to quit being the CEO of Lion Heart. That means you can quit Team Rocket," he said.

Summer felt dread and fear burn inside of her. If he reported her to the HBIC, it would cause a whole slew of problems for not just her, but for those she employed that were not members of team Rocket. It would turn her company upside down.[break][break]

She had the money to survive without it. But she had to get her legal team together and prepared if he decided to.[break][break]

"I would understand if you did," she said softly.[break][break]

Summer paused. She hesitated to tell him some of the truths of Rocket. But... she had to explain to Gunner why she couldn't leave.[break][break]

"I thought about it. I wanted a peaceful life for us. But, Rocket is under orders to hunt and destroy anyone who leaves. And I know too much. I don't think that future is possible for me, Gunner."

Gunner unfolded his arms and turned to look at her, concern etched on his brow. Thanks to the intel from people like CIAN MAHER and Serena Malcolm, he already knew that Team Rocket tried to execute individuals who left its ranks. But Summer need not share that fate.[break][break]

However, if she did not think she could leave, he couldn't share details of the defection process to her, either. That kind of leak would compromise not only the HBIC but those defectors successfully living quiet lives away from Team Rocket.[break][break]

The hand resting on his thigh clenched into a fist. He was stuck, unable to move forward meaningfully, unwilling to just accept that Summer wanted to remain tied to the crime syndicate.[break][break]

"That would make us into enemies. You know that, right?" he said softly, wishing it weren't true. "Maybe the average person at your company is innocent, but when you choose to support crime and terrorism…"[break][break]

He shook his head, at a loss for words.[break][break]

"I want us to be friends, Summer. And I don't want you to live in fear like this. I can help you escape it, you know. Just say the word."

Summer listened to him, her gaze back at her hands. She couldn’t look at him or meet his gaze when he said that to her. After twenty years in Galar, the process they had made there, it could be shattered the the blink of an eye because of their differing paths.[break][break]

Her leg began to bounce, anxiety and nerves building.[break][break]

”How? How could you do something like that for me?” she begged, finally meeting his gaze again.[break][break]

”After everything that I’ve done! How does someone like me deserve a life like that? Do you know what my hands have done, Gunner?” Summer’s voice cracked, and while her hands, which were held out in front of her, showed nothing on them, she could see them tainted.[break][break]

Bloodied. Poisoned. Dirty. Filthy.[break][break]

”How, Gunner?” she whispered, broken.
