Summer had an idea of what she wanted. But, even with the help of Gunner, in all his vagueness, she wasn't sure it was a true, attainable future.[break][break]

She remembered the crown. Her city, though it suffered through hard war, grew to prosper throughout its hardships. Those people she couldn't quite remember, their allegiances she knew weren't to Rocket, she had grown to become friends with a love.[break][break]

A twisting guilt ate at her for even thinking about staying with the group she'd known all her life.[break][break]

"Can you give me some time to think about it?" Summer finally asked, resting back against the bench. Her gaze rested at her lap.[break][break]

She was mentally and emotionally exhausted.[break][break]

"I need to find some truths before I change my future. We only just made it back home yesterday."[break][break]

Summer closed her eyes, taking in a breath. "Do you want to eat? We don't even have to talk about anything at all. We can just have a moment of peace, like we did 20 years ago..."

Gunner nodded. Summer's request for time was reasonable. Even if they hadn't just gone through an unexplainable yet life-altering experience, needing time to process the offer and make a decision was expected.[break][break]

"Of course. Take your time. You know how to reach me once you've made a decision. In the meantime, I won't say anything to my bosses about your… situation."[break][break]

It was the least he could do for her.[break][break]

"A bite to eat sounds great." Gunner stood from the bench, his movement slow and weary. Even though he was still young, the conversation made him feel like an old man. Again. "Anywhere's good with me."[break][break]

Sure enough, they had their moment of peace. And when it ended naturally at the close of the meal, he said goodbye to Summer. Goodbye to everything they had been before the battle. Goodbye to their relationship and to their child.[break][break]

The Hoennian sun warmed his face as he walked home. For the first time in what felt like months, Gunner Graves breathed a deep sigh of relief as a burdensome weight lifted from his shoulders. He walked through the door of his cage and into freedom.
