Gunner took a large bite from his sandwich and chewed as he listened to Ollie's update. He took the time to swallow and sip his coffee before replying, "Missing is better than dead, but not by much." [break][break]

Memories from the previous spring and summer flashed through his head. Not only had Team Rocket captured then-Councilwoman Elinor Anderson, but also annalise henderson and, later, Caleb Harcourt. Gunner had spent long nights looking for all of them, searching every inch of the region for clues as to their whereabouts. [break][break]

In the end, all three had been recovered, but the cost of imprisonment had been steep. At least, he assumed that much. [break][break]

"I just got back from checking Councilwoman Morningstar's hotel room," he said. "There weren't any signs of a fight or resistance of any kind."

Mila's sudden wakefulness startled both Gunner and his Arcanine, who had curled up in a corner of the room. The man surged out of his chair as she sat bolt upright, straining the cables and wires connected to her. [break][break]

"Mila! Mila, it's okay!" He pressed his hands against her shoulders, urging her to lie back down, and offered her a reassuring smile. "I'm here." [break][break]

A middle-aged, male nurse popped her head in, drawn by the noise. "Is everything all right? Oh, you're awake!" [break][break]

He stepped inside and began reading the displays on all the machines. "Might want to lay down, miss. You've lost an awful lot of blood. Would've probably died if the gentleman here hadn't brought you himself." [break][break]

He nodded a head at Gunner as he finished recording Mila's vitals.

Hours later, Gunner sat beside Mila's hospital bed, unconsciously and repetitively clenching and unclenching his fist. His Arcanine had teleported them to Oldale General Hospital, where doctors immediately took her into the operating room. They removed the knife from her leg far better than he could have ever attempted in the field. [break][break]

Now she slept, resting after so much blood loss. An IV dripped painkillers and fluids into her to encourage recovery. After the nurses came to check her vitals, they left Gunner alone with his thoughts. [break][break]

With that horrific memory burned into his mind. [break][break]

For what felt like the hundredth time, he looked over at Mila to check that she was still breathing. The monitors attached to her beeped coldly at him. Reaching out, he gently grasped her hand and laced their fingers together.

In that tight space between buildings, the all-out brawl between Pokémon raged. Gunner had to sidestep several wayward attacks to avoid becoming collateral damage. In the end, however, his and Greyson's Pokémon prevailed. Some of the Rockets fled, but a couple remained, held by Safir's DISABLE. [break][break]

"Thanks," Gunner said. A 'you too' almost escaped his lips, but that was obvious; Greyson had since been promoted to Elite Four. "It feels like that was ages ago." [break][break]

He moved toward the Rocket grunts to handcuff them, leaving the contraband for Greyson to handle.

If Gunner knew of the analogies Yujin formed of them, he would have laughed and claimed he was no knight. Knights were peerless, shining examples of chivalry and hope. On the other hand, he was simply a man who knew the cost of complacency and greed. [break][break]

He shrugged and spread his hands, as if to say 'ah well'. Treats scattered from his fingers as he tossed them to the birds. [break][break]

The psychic blast forced Gunner's Pokémon back, knocking out his Mienshao and leaving his Urshifu staggered on one knee. But they were spared the Mega Metagross' full aggression, as the Steel-type bore down on Beau's Pangoro. Blood splattered across the ground, a sickening sight. [break][break]

"Beau!" Gunner yelled, swapping out his injured team for fresh Pokémon. His Bayleef emerged in a flash of light. "Titania, set up a defense around Torben and Orson!" [break][break]

The air shimmered as LIGHT SCREEN manifested between the Pangoro's twisted body and his little guardian, Beau's Kubfu, and their Mega Evolved foe. Gunner didn't know what was happening with the way the bear club glowed, but perhaps his trainer had something up his sleeve. [break][break]

"Whatever you're doing, Fontaine, do it now!"

Gunner bit back the urge to scowl at the mayor. "We are fighting back," he pointed out to the other man as Pokémon battled each other across street and sky alike. Out of the corner of his eye, he spotted three Rocket grunts clambering onto the stage through gaps in the SMOKESCREEN. [break][break]

"Dagonet!" Gunner hollered. His Ditto-turned-Charizard turned its head and unleashed a FLAMETHROWER at the terrorists. Fresh screams filled the air, but it was too difficult to tell if Dagonet had hit its mark. [break][break]

Turning back to the mayor, the agent said, "But we also need to prioritize your safety, sir. They are here for you and the councilwoman, most likely, and we cannot afford to have you die here." [break][break]

His hand still gripping the mayor's arm, Gunner attempted to drag him bodily to safety. [break][break]

Chaos engulfed the small campsite. Gunner registered the added noise from Beau's Pokémon joining the fray, but he could only focus on the battle waged by his own Urshifu and Mienshao. Thankfully, their combined skill and training gave them the advantage over the poachers. Before long, the Nickit and Zubat fell, unconscious. [break][break]

And from what Gunner could see, Beau and his team were faring well, too. Bright lights engulfed the Geodude, Corvisquire, and Mightyena as they returned to their Pokéballs, their trainers cursing loudly. [break][break]

"Let's just get out of here!" one of the poachers yelled. "Leave the Pokémon; they're not worth it!" [break][break]

The others seemed inclined to agree; the group quickly dashed for their vehicle. As one of them ducked into the truck, she summoned a single Pokémon, a Metagross. Brilliant light engulfed it as it MEGA EVOLVED. [break][break]

Its eyes flashed with psychic energy before blasting Gunner's and Beau's Pokémon with EXPANDING FORCE.

Gunner froze with his iced latte half-raised to his lips. He stood in the elevator lobby on the first floor of HBIC Headquarters, staring at the bulletin board dedicated to official League notices. A new one had been posted overnight, one that caught him off guard. [break][break]

He wasn't the only person, either. Other employees of the Bureau crowded around the bulletin, murmuring among themselves. [break][break]

Had PENELOPE LIVY issued this? Perhaps it was a joint decision from the Council? But why hadn't she told Gunner ahead of time? [break][break]

The agent whipped out his work phone, took a photo of the notice, then texted it to paxton concordas. [break][break]

"Hey man, did you know about this?" [image attached]

Then Gunner turned and elbowed his coworkers aside to reach the elevator. On the ride up to his floor, he checked his email to make sure he hadn't missed a memo, but saw nothing. Instead of walking the usual route to his cubicle, he made a beeline for his boss' office. [break][break]

All he needed was reassurance, he told himself. Surely Penelope would grant him that much.

Beneath the tree, Gunner joined Yujin in scattering small treats at the Pidove. Before long, the two were swarmed by a small flock gathered at their feet, pecking at the ground for crumbs. [break][break]

"Wherever I'm needed the most," he replied. "I know it's a copout answer, but I want to serve where I can be the most helpful. Sometimes that means acting as Hoenn's shield, and sometimes that means acting as its sword." [break][break]

His tone was as grim as his expression. [break][break]

"In this case, we need to act in defense against an invading force coming from the eastern side of the region. So maybe Lilycove or Slateport." But that was still a guess based on the information they had. [break][break]

Gunner glanced sidelong at Yujin. "What about you?"

Jack's uninterested tone deepened Gunner's curiosity and concern, but the agent made no comment on the oddity. Instead, he nodded and said, "I'll see what I can do." [break][break]

Then he turned his full attention to the battle. The Aegislash's SHADOW SNEAK was a good tactic, as it caught his Iron Valiant off guard. The two Pokémon continued exchanging vicious blows, sparks flying as metal crashed on metal. [break][break]

Eventually, however, the battle came to an end; a decisive thrust from Jack's Aegislash bringing Gunner's Iron Valiant to its knees. [break][break]

"Good fight," Gunner said, recalling his Pokémon. "You're a really impressive battler, Jack. I look forward to seeing how you fare on the next battlefield." [break][break]

The agent still could not shake the memory of the Ranger's demeanor during the battle against Kyurem from his mind. Was the man standing across from him really the same person?

Gunner's expression grew somber at Yujin's quiet admission. He observed the way she grimaced, her feelings on her brother's passing clearly still strong despite the passage of years. [break][break]

He stood, recognizing her restlessness as a sign of her emotional discomfort. Past versions of him had been in the same situations more than once. [break][break]

"Sounds good to me. I think there's a food stall along the perimeter of the park that sells Pokémon treats," Gunner said, leading the way, his hands in his pockets. [break][break]

He was content to remain in a comfortable silence with Yujin, too, willing to let her dictate the direction of their conversation—whether that meant opening up more about her past, or tackling a new topic.

Gunner paid half of his attention to PENELOPE LIVY's words as she answered the audience's questions and the other half to his earpiece. Chatter on the comms was perfectly normal. [break][break]

That was why, when bursts of flame arced over the gathering to singe the very air, they caught the agent completely off guard. Long years of training took over at once, and he whistled for his Ditto. The Pokémon surged from its chair, human limbs morphing grotesquely into the first enemy it saw, a Charizard. [break][break]

"Get Water-types on that fire now!" Gunner shouted into his mic as he dashed to the stage. Kyrenai Black was already there between the councilwoman and the mayor. [break][break]

Before the agent could reach them, however, a FISSURE shook the ground between him and the stage, causing the very street to crack apart. Dagonet rushed for his trainer, taking wing and grabbing Gunner so they could cross the gap and join the others. [break][break]

"Black, we have to move!" Gunner yelled over the din of battle, though he knew the bodyguard already knew what to do. He grabbed the mayor by the upper arm and drew his pistol. Meanwhile, Dagonet breathed forth a SMOKESCREEN to obscure their escape. [break][break]
