The blade, deadly sharp, split the very sky in two. For a heartbeat, far above, they could see the night sky above Dewford. They beheld ancient ice climbing before its rampage. Home called to them, and all they had to do was win this fight.[break][break]
Above, the Skeleton Gigantic recoiled in surprise. The claw coiled in on itself, and it fell. If its cannon would not suffice, then it would enter the fray. That was a lesson imparted from father to daughter.[break][break]
“Cyan!” He cried. Zacian broke her gaze, looking up at the dragon. A curt nod, a rallying howl, and she skipped across the air. She moved so fast that her motion seemed to blur, a cyan streak across the firmament. She rose, and rose, and rose, until the sacred sword Ascalon clashed against destined death. Sparks flew, draconic energy blasting against mankind’s fighting spirit.[break][break]
Both recoiled from the clash, and both rushed to meet one another again. Knight and dragon put their all into this battle.[break][break]
Close by, a horse and her Rider readied themselves to join the fray. Navy had faith, absolute faith, in Howard. His Squire would answer the call. They would fight to the end.[break][break]
“Crystal! You’ve forgotten something!” He shouted up at the uncaring, unfeeling dragon. “Wasn’t just me, who brought Zacian and Zamazenta back! Wasn’t just one hero. It took everyone! We all gave everything we had!”[break][break]
Power surged within him – power that wasn’t there before. Power to make a difference, power to fight the dragon. He felt beckoned to speak words into being. In time, when this tale had ended and he tested the limits of his power, he would find they worked differently…[break][break]
But every story needs a little embellishment.[break][break]
“Heroes of old! Need a little help here!”[break][break]
And they answered. Heroes, garbed in light, their features unreadable, surged forth into existence. They, too, fought a long battle to return home. Warriors armed with axes, swords, maces, and every other weapon man’s mind could conjure surged to meet Eternatus.[break][break]
Riding just ahead, screaming and holding his axe high, was the Pale Rider.

“We can win, Howard.” He spoke the words like a mad mantra, he spoke them with undying conviction. He spoke those words like they were gospel, handed down by the universe. Navy spoke them like he was anything more than a man, so much meat and matter, cast in this moment in time, fighting something that would outlive the bones of every human alive on the earth.[break][break]
But it wasn’t about winning or losing, not really. There were foolish fights, and there were just fights. When a warrior faced a worthwhile battle, it did not matter whether he won or lost. It only mattered that he fought. It only mattered that he saw it through, to the very last second, until the end of the credits.[break][break]
He dreamed an impossible dream, a dream of victory beyond the horizon.[break][break]
Only, in this dream, nothing was truly impossible. Nothing was out of reach. A murderer could become a hero. A seed of common human heroism could sprout into a legend. That which was broken might me made whole. The crownless could once again be king.[break][break]
Valkyrie cried in open defiance of Eternatus’s edict. A star fell upon them, and it meant to end them all. It meant to end any hope they had of returning to the land where they belonged. Navy made Howard a promise, long ago, that he would remember. No matter what, no matter where the road took him or how hard it might be, he would remember Hoenn.[break][break]
Beyond the horizon was home. His daughter waited for them. Hyakkaryōran Tsubaki waited for him. Eris Halla waited for him. Every soul that cried out for the tomorrow Eternatus, the ruinous treasures, and the Dark Triad would take away from them waited on one more weary warrior to join the fight.[break][break]
His gun was in his right hand, the tera orb in his left. Zaria was running alongside him. One moment, a human. The next, a cyan wolf. She stood taller than him as he rode Valkyrie. They rode towards destined death, with defiance in their heart. Raising his gun, Navy screamed. He fired, and the threw. Two hands, two separate moments, two strands of perfection that had no right to be.[break][break]
He was consumed by the light.

“…ends war!” He held his gun out with shaky, trembling hands. The battle was upon them. Valkyrie roared, Zaria drew Ascalon and held it with both hands. It was but a shadow of what it needed to be for this battle, but it was all they had. A cheer rang about behind him. A hundred thousand voices of those who were not there, cast in the role of audience in the stand. They were the voices of Dewford, of Galar, of those long dead and those yet born who would hear this tale in the days long dead.[break][break]
“Oh, very well then!” She smiled herself, enamored by the words of the Squire howard slayte. “If that is how you feel, then so be it. End your war. Go back to your homeland. Fight your battle, and know peace. It would make this maiden happy.”[break][break]
She rose higher and higher. The storm overhead grew to a breaking point. All the world seem to break away and shatter, leaving in its place open galaxies and swirling nebulas. Stars danced around them, as if the heavens themselves turned their apathetic gaze to this clash of knight and dragon.[break][break]
“The curtain rises. The actors take their place. The Hero faces the dragon. Yet, I must speak a selfish desire. My heart yearns to be remembered, o father. I am the forgotten one, that which sleeps eternal, that which your fervent desire breathes power into with every step. Michael Navidson. Navy. Warrior. My father. My enemy. This shall be our first, and greatest battle.”[break][break]

Crystal Navidson was gone. Where she stood was a colossal dragon. No, to call the dragon a colossus was tantamount to slander. What towered above them was a supernova, a being so big that a single claw could swallow up whole continents. That one single claw is what soared down through the clouds. It opened wide. And its dynamax cannon shot down upon them like a comet upon a dying planet.

“Your heart’s desire was to return here. Your heart’s desire was to see your daughter again. Your heart’s desire was to slay your enemy. Through the grace of these crystals, all things are possible, o Rider.”[break][break]

“Oh, but you do.” She floated down, quick as a lightning bolt, their eyes inches apart. They were the windows into the soul, and every passing moment, the abyss within them deepened.[break][break]
Navy heard his own voice, then. He heard words he had repeated within the very heart chamber of the beast. Again and again and again he said the same words.[break][break]

“I’ve enjoyed our time together. It seems a poor story, where the villain only shows up at the very end, does it not? I have never seen Galar as I beheld it within this dream, this moment that will be lost to me in the long away and very soon when I awaken.”[break][break]
“This, too, must be a miracle of the tera. It is a curious thing, how humans face the inevitable. The primordial ice which terrorizes your domain is but a fraction of my strength, yet to return there, you must face me alone, Rider. Just three humans and one Pokemon without its crownless king against me.”[break][break]

“Stop trying to argue.” She growled, her face morphing into something monstrous as she spoke the command. Beneath the anger was pleading – human pleading, a daughter begging her father to allow her to play her appointed role.[break][break]
“You are a knight on his quest. You sought a dragon to slay, and so you have found one. Perhaps a different man could reach an understanding, but not you.” She drifted back up, back towards the pitch, where fortunes were made and less over far lower stakes.[break][break]
“I will speak to you a prophecy of absolute truth. Those who preside over such things will call you The Warrior. Not The Peacemaker, not The Exacting or The Liberator. A Warrior must make war, or he is no warrior at all.”[break][break]

Twisted hands clawed at them as the cabal passed through Wyndon. Idle strokes of their weapons turned them away. Half-dead Pokemon kept their wary distance, watching the three navigate a broken city. Wyndon, for a medieval city, looked decidedly modern. Automobiles looked as if they had been abandoned in a hurry. Navy thought nothing of it, right until he saw many of the cars had Hoenn license plates.[break][break]
Reality was growing strange, the way details mixed themselves up in dreams. Written words on signs twisted from proper letters into gibberish. All signs pointed to the way forward to the arena. Pressure mounted in his chest, pressure like he was diving through the Ultra Deep Sea. For the first time in their long journey, he felt the absence of his sygna suit.[break][break]
It began to hurt, and the ache grew worse and worse. It was the mounting pressure of a dive down into the black abyss, only this one was tainted by the one ruinous emotion his Squire faced: fear. Fear seemed to seize him. Fear of the unknown, fear of the return…[break][break]
Fear of the dragon.[break][break]
He remembered a time long ago, when Team Rocket first attacked. He imagined the world where he gripped his pokeball, charged into that next cart with Ironsides, and fought like hell. Perhaps it would have made no difference, had he fought the dragon called Rocket. Mayhaps he would have just been another casualty, but he would have lived.[break][break]
In a passing tera crystal, he saw that image reflected. He saw himself, standing with kyle lopez and the rest – another defender of Hoenn from the first. He saw himself holding his blade against land, air, and sea.[break][break]
He would not run again. He would fight. He would face the dragon, even should it mean his death. They arrived at the Wyndon Colosseum. It looked high above them, an arena that could seat at least a hundred thousand screaming souls. Ahead was a path forward, a path cleaved into the concrete, allowing them onto the pitch.[break][break]
Standing in the path was Crystal, starlight dancing in her hair.[break][break]
“Welcome, my father, my friends, my enemies.”

“Not a fan of spaghetti.” He turned the page, focusing on some bit of trivia regarding a formula one race in Paldea. It held less appeal than the tigress lounging in her cage, but it did well enough. Navy refused to acknowledge her with real interest.[break][break]
He knows what his enemies at HQ would say. They would look at him with accusation, wondering if he would let her go in some desperate bid for redemption. His enemies at League HQ are not warriors. None of them understand how much you can come to understand another by fighting them. Hana Aoki showed him her soul, stripped bare for him down to the atoms, and he knows everything he needs to know.[break][break]
She will never change. She wears the blood on her hands like a badge of honor. Navy pities the man he once was, knowing that he would get his neck snapped as quick as Deputy Dave would.[break][break]
“Looks too much like guts. I’m a simple man. Steak. If I’m filling adventurous, I’ll eat some tonkatsu.” Since the ball’s in his court, he dials up Dave, kicks his feet up on the desk, and makes sure Hana never leaves his periphery.[break][break]
It’s a quick call. Afterwards, he turns the page.[break][break]
“Bikers are the most obnoxious guys Arceus put on the earth. Hate those damn loud Harleys. Cars? Cars are for chicks. ‘Cept the Falcon. Trucks are where it’s at. Back when I had fun, I wanted to break the Paldean embargo so bad. Put a Revaroom in my old truck.” But it would have cost an arm and a leg, and it would have got him in trouble he couldn’t afford. “You a rice burner girl?”

“Ascalon.” Zaria said with reverence. “Count yourself lucky, Navy. You have a fine squire.”[break][break]
“The best.” A moment later, he repeated something that needed to be said. “The bird this feather's from was named Ironsides. I met him when I was thinking about jumping off a building.” Thet had been the lowest day of his life, and only that bird saved him. “He was…” How to describe someone like that?[break][break]
Ironsides had been old from the moment he was born. Perpetually done with life, his Skarmory rose to the occasion every time like a reluctant hero. Only that first day, when the bird understood that the human before him had every intention of jumping from that ledge, did he intervene. With silent, pleading eyes, Ironsides implored the human to keep going.[break][break]
And so, he had. And so, he was here.[break][break]
“My friend. Dewford was his home, too.” And then, he was gone. Dewford mourned another adopted son. The train began to slow. Snow fell. Wyndon was close, and they would have to trek the last mile into the city on foot. Navy didn’t understand why the tracks ended here, but they did.[break][break]
“Ascalon.” Navy repeated. “Man. You’re good at naming stuff, Howard.”[break][break]
“Time grows short. Navy, here.” She held out a black orb. It glimmered with light the color of a rainbow. Eighteen strands of color dashed across its surface. “When we engage our foe in earnest, throw this at me.”[break][break]
“A tera orb?” He questioned. “How’d you get it? How do you kno-”[break][break]
“I know because I know. It is your own orb, Rider. I woke up with it in the Slumbering Weald, and every crystal we found seemed to sharpen my mind. Have faith in me, as I have faith in you.”[break][break]
“Alright.” Their last train came to a stop.[break][break]
It was time for them to go, to ride to ruin and face the end of the world. Valkyrie was waiting for them as they left the train. She looked to her rider expectantly.[break][break]
“I know you’re not coming home with me, girl.” He hugged his horse, his true steed, another piece of this dream he would have to leave behind. “And I know I’m not the one who’s meant to ride you. Still…thanks.”[break][break]
Valkyrie held her head there, against his shoulder. She never moved, not until he was ready. He mounted up, looked down at Howard and Zaria, and began their slow, plodding course towards Crystal and the dragon they had to slay.

“And mine.” Zaria agreed. Wyndon loomed closer, and she turned her attention back to the Hero and his Squire. It would soon be time for them to play their roles. That meant she had things to say to the Hero.[break][break]
“Navy, Warrior. Do you swear to always protect Hoenn and its people?” She asked the question so seriously that he was forced to respond in kind.[break][break]
“Yeah, I do. Til the day I die.”[break][break]
“No. No more dying from you. Dying’s easy. Living is harder. Live for Hoenn. Fight for it. Risk your life if you must, but do not do so recklessly, needlessly.”[break][break]
“I can do that.”[break][break]
“And you swear to act as your League’s blade? To act with conviction? To not hesitate when you are needed?”[break][break]
“Yes.”[break][break]
“Hmm.” She drew Ironsides’s feather, looking it over. “This blade truly is the equal to the one I used, once, so very long ago. I’m dreadful at naming things.”[break][break]
“Don’t you dare.” He said sharply to Howard, expecting an ‘I see you two have things in common’. Zaria cleared her throat.[break][break]
“This blade will soon face a dragon. It seems fitting that the blade be given a name. Howard, what would you suggest?”

And, near the end, came a revelation. Zaria, oblivious to this particular giant, merely sat back with passive interest. Her eyes seemed much keener to focus on the looming stormclouds ahead. A malicious storm of dynergy brewed above Wyndon. That was her chief concern, for her fated foe awaited.[break][break]
“Wait,” said Navy, “what?” Leaning forward in his seat, he searched Howard’s face, as if hoping he could find something there that would explain the meaning of his words. “Which one? Not the stone one. Last I heard, it was still wandering around the Crater and AZ. The dragon one’s MIA.” And those were the two he knew about. There were more, Navy knew that much. What types they were, what they were, was a quest left for Howard.[break][break]
“Arceus…I’ve missed so much.” March and April, for the Rider, were defined by action – so much action that it burned him up, burned him out. May, by contrast, had been inaction. Recovery. He had been a wounded warrior, waiting for his moment to strike.[break][break]
“Which one?”

But the light need not die that day. The ideal of civilized life, of ease, of comfort, of man and Pokemon working side by side, need not die today. Not while he lived. Not while Navy drew breath. [break][break]
“I lose my daughter, once. I lost the life I built here.” His eyes turned to Zaria, with whom he made a promise. “And when this war’s over, I’ll make a new life for myself. I’ll grieve for Gabe and Kyle with Noah. We’ll move on. Life will go on, and the people I’m fighting for will be happy.”[break][break]
“I’m Navy. I’m Michael Navidson. I’m the Pale Rider. All these things are true. Galar, this place, it’s a part of me, but I’ve got to fight for Hoenn.” He pointed at Howard. “And you have to fight for Hoenn too, in your own way. We’ll fight each other until the day Eternatus shows Himself in our world. Then, we’ll beat him back. We’ll write an ending there, just like we’ll write one here.”
