Hattori lowered himself, ready to bounce forward. A few skips, a rise, and his kunai would be at the dragon’s throat. A low growl from his newest teammate leads him to draw back. Something else steps onto the field.[break][break]
Zacian, Hero of Many Battles, walks out of the mist. She looks at the dragon with quiet, even eyes. Her golden gaze sizes the monster up. It would not take the warrior to sense a creature on its last legs. Some would say death here would be a mercy. Both this hero and her sword brother disagree.[break][break]
She steps forward, blindingly quick even with her sword sheathed. Her paw swipes up at its head, delivering a false swipe that has enough force to crush stone. For Pokemon of this dragon’s caliber, it will simply be a strong sleep. There will come another day when the dragon and the intrepid sword meet.[break][break]
“One loss don’t make you a loser.” He grunts, like he was the one that suffered that grievous blow to the stomach. His arm knits itself. Blood vessels reform, skin heals, and soon his arm is as good as new. “You think I’ve never lost a fight? A fight that mattered?” He had been beaten by Rocket, terrified into submission by Rocket, tossed about like a ragdoll. Yet still, he endured.[break][break]
Instead of striking him again, Navy strides right for Kouji. He walks as if he means to walk through the younger man.[break][break]
“I saw the world you want. I saw the shit you had to go through. You really gonna let your first real loss whip you this bad?”[break][break]
He stops just short of Kouji. His eyes turn down upon one who had once been a fated foe.[break][break]
“Thought you were better than that.”

“I…I’ve gotta do my job, Doc. You don’t know me from Mew, but I take my work seriously. This region needs people to help, now more than ever. We’re down two Elite Four.” Exhaustion sweeps over him just from saying the words. Instead, he leans back, trying to think about how in the world he could extract himself from this mess.[break][break]
“Arceus…I’m lucky Temp’s a decent guy, or I’d be dead.” Decency, he knows, has nothing to do with it. Tempest Quinn only kept him alive because it wouldn’t be proper for a warrior to die like that, choking out with a poisoned heart.

Kouji spoke like a whipped dog. It burned Navy’s blood, made it boil like it hadn’t boiled in years. To fight his own for the sake of the world was his sacred duty. To fight Rocket was his chivalric vow. Kouji’s words reeked of resignation. It brings to mind another memory, of a creature steeped in that same resignation.[break][break]
Behind them, colors fly across the battlefield. Elemental fury gathers in the maw of a broken dragon. Hattori stands in the eye of that hurricane, looking up at his foe with one eye. He readies himself for what’s to come. His breathing stills.[break][break]
Something is struck, but it isn’t Hattori. Something is burned, singed, frozen, struck by lightning. All that fury is focused on one focal point…[break][break]
And then, it is returned. A second blow, this one more decisive than the first. His substitution jutsu turns the dragon’s strength upon itself.[break][break]
A thin, metal duster covers the sheriff’s right fist. Navy hardly notices it’s there. Kouji’s charging him, a forward charge, a suicidal rush. Kouji charges Navy just like the sheriff once charged Cillian Quinn on a bloody beach. Death had been his reward, and he came back less than what he had been before.[break][break]
“Then fight like you’ve got something to lose!” He shouts the words like a commander on the battlefield. “Or else you’ve already lost!”[break][break]
His fist flies out, an impossibly strong haymaker. All the fury Navy’s felt condenses into that blow, that one strike. He’s reminded of another blow, one delivered unto him like a wake-up call. It was a wicked blow, just as the haymaker is wicked. Navy feels his own bones shatter from the force, but he doesn’t care. Some things are worth the pain.[break][break]
“That kid talked a whole lot of sense.”

Dewford’s sheriff doesn’t budge. He doesn’t give an inch. To look away or show fear is to invite defeat. His hands rest against his belt. Hydreigon stirs another old memory from him. Navy remembers the vicious fight that led to its evolution. They fought amongst granite and rolling, open abyss.[break][break]
“You talk like a guy who’s got nothing to fight for – not even his pride.” He speaks up, as if addressing the dragon, but the words carry across the rubble to Kouji. “How the hell do you think you’re gonna beat me – hell, any of the League, if that’s how you talk?”[break][break]
Hydreigon’s shadow bubbles. It threatens to overflow, darkness bleeding into light. From the great dragon’s shadow emerges the unlikeliest opponent one could imagine: a Greninja. Hattori is small, too small to be considered a proper Greninja by most. Illegal breeding and a frenzy for his species following a successful Kalosian movie led to the unfortunate circumstances of his birth.[break][break]
Yet Navy found him, and trained him, and gave him purpose. A shinobi is one who serves, and no shinobi would see their Lord die in a battle like this. Empowered by duty, conviction, and purpose, draconic energy wraps around the frog. He seems a much vaster creature than he truly is, wrapped in a furious aura. In times like these, in a crucible like Hoenn, even a small thing like him can be a dragon.[break][break]
His dragon hammer smashes into Hydreigon with terrible purpose.[break][break]
“That’s not how that kid in the cave talked.”

“Come on, Gramps. Show ‘em what you’ve got.” Gramps has been pinned to the ground by Gabite’s fangs. Uncoiled like a snake, the elderly dragon voices his protest and tries to break free. Gabite are fearsome things, as Navy well knows. They are not to be taken lightly. Neither, he thinks, are Drampa.[break][break]
Gramps soars. He flies, even. He launches himself up, body coiling around the Gabite as it launches his throat. They lock in an intimate embrace, soaring higher, higher, higher…[break][break]]
“Don’t think either of them are gonna like it when they fall, huh?”

“It’s never too late to change the road you’re on.” He repeats a mantra given to numerous defectors, and those he hopes will defect. They’re spoken with resolve, an understanding that to speak them could burn him. To believe in someone or something is to put your heart on the line.[break][break]
“But that ain’t your style. Yeah, I know her. She’s my daughter.” Not by blood. She’s too old for that. In another lifetime, his daughter by blood wore Tsubaki’s face, and wore it well. It rouses old protective instincts in him, something that turns curiosity into genuine, ferocious paternal wrath.[break][break]
“You touch her, and I’ll kill you.” He speaks the words like a vow. There can be no higher calling than to defend another. A blade raised in defense of another is raised with all the surety in the world. As he speaks, fey mist begins to cover the ground. Dewford has gained itself a new guardian, a warden to stem the flow of evil from the midnight sea.[break][break]
“You don’t want this fight, man.” Not like this. Navy looks in Kouji’s eyes, searches him. The Rocket seems like an unfinished painting, something an artist worked on and promptly tossed aside before masterful strokes could render him complete.

“Howard.” The Rider huffed the word, struggling to breathe. Even a man such as him, with no education, knew that breathing should have been impossible this high up. The how and why of that was for a greater man than he to consider.[break][break]
“You trust me?” It was a rhetorical question. Navy rushed for Howard, grabbing him without concern for modesty. “Zaria! You following?” She nodded, and jumped off of Eternatus. Navy was a heartbeat behind her, taking a plunge into open space. He fell, until he landed upon the she-wolf’s back.[break][break]
Zaria flew, faster than any creature her size had a right to fly. She rushed forward in a reckless wild charge, electricity streaming behind her. Her blade slashed into the flesh of Eternatus. It made Her cry out in pain. She called down more meteors upon them as the Warrior, his Squire, and the Hero of Many Battles chased the dragon across the universe.[break][break]
“I didn’t tell you bastards to stop!” He shouted at the heroic spirits, who opened fire once again. They rained arrows upon Eternatus. Arrows of fire, arrows of ice, arrows of light and acid and verdant green pierced Her hide, distracted her just enough for Zaria to plunge upon the dragon’s head.[break][break]
“Come on.” He jumped off Zaria, cleaving through the hands with his battleaxe. “If we can make a decisive blow on the head, we win.”

If he hadn’t taken one job, his life would have taken a different path. One quick investigation in Dewford. Some woman was missing her wedding ring. A normal job, laced with a big paycheck. It was more an excuse to get out of the city for a day.[break][break]
And what a day it had been. It was a day of definition and refinement. For one day, this cold war burned bright as the sun. Mounds of dead men and mons were piled up, buried upon Mt. Pyre. The creature he had been, some thing coasting through life with one foot in the light and one in the dark, died. He was beaten like unrefined steel until he took focus.[break][break]
Nostalgia wells within him. For most, the battle was a year ago. For him, it was twenty and change. Galar created a gulf within him, a gulf he struggled to fill until, finally, he was forced to accept all of himself. Michael Navidson, Pale Rider, Navy, all those names belong to him.[break][break]
Coincidence, habit, and duty sees him placed at precisely the spot to see a familiar face moving through the ruins of Granite Cave. Guarding the Ultra Deep Sea has proven an arduous task without mapped tunnel. Anyone can fly down, and his deputies cannot be everywhere at once.[break][break]
A ball madly shakes at his hip. There is only one being who can rouse that much reaction from Shuwen. Navy walks forward. Somewhere along the way, he finds another walking alongside him.[break][break]
“Admin Fox did a little redecorating.” He smiles wanly. “What’re you doing here, Kouji? Quinn, Cross, or Harcourt put you up to this?”

Navy helps oversee construction. Given everything that has occurred since the night Rocket attacked, he has helped passively, directing others from a chair. His Pokemon do much of the heavy lifting, aiding the human workers as supplies are delivered.[break][break]
“Thank Arceus for Josh.” He says to no one in particular, least of all the nest of chirping Skarmory sitting nearby. Navy discovered them in the aftermath of the battle. They would never see each other again, not like this. The Rider ran a hand through her mane, a moment of solace on the battlefield, and stood in the saddle.[break][break]
“Steady, girl.” He said. “Steady.” Eternatus loomed larger and larger. Raising his pistol high, he fired a shot. The chain pierce flesh, and pulled him up towards the body of the beast. Valkyrie saw him off with a bolt of ghastly energy, riding along on the ground below.[break][break]
Zacian waited for them up top. She carved at the dragon’s flesh, dodging the hands that came to drag them down. Her eyes fell to Navy, then up to the meteor. She swayed her head down in a cutting motion.[break][break]
“Cyan, anyone ever toldja that you’re evil?”[break][break]
Another voice cut him off, the dragon’s reply to Howard’s bold proclamation. The voice rolled across the whole breadth of the imagined world, an edict for all to hear.[break][break]
“Then by all means, fight as much as you’d like! It won’t matter, in the end!”[break][break]
“Howaaaard! Hold onto something!” As they rose, so did the meteor grow closer. Gripping the air as if holding it in his hands, Navy screamed as if his soul threatened to leave his body. The meteor sunk, fast, right into Eternatus’s head. She spun, spiraling through the cosmos with so many flies on her back.[break][break]

Halberds, twin axes burning with fighting spirit, bows tinged with grassy pledges, an endless barrage of weapons assailed the dragon. Navy had no time to think, not then, or consider how he witnessed a swan song.[break][break]
So many of those great heroes, upon their return to Hoenn, took up the sword and resumed old grudges. Bonds of fellowship were forgotten in favor of the grudge that tossed them upon Galarian shores. Not here, not today. Heroes returned to slay the Skeleton Gigantic.[break][break]
And the Skeleton Gigantic would not suffer them lightly. She raised a cry, bleeding magenta blood, and called to the heavens above for aid. What began as a distant rock grew with every second, with every blow. The draconoids had a name for what She called. Draco Meteor was said to be the ultimate expression of draconic might: a decree so powerful that the heavens themselves would answer.[break][break]
“To be human is to crumble, to return to dust. Your stories, your dreams, they only live until the last human dies.”[break][break]
It was falling upon them. They had moments to live. Another impossible blow, while Zacian was distracted on the frontline of this battle. Navy breathed in…[break][break]
And he felt something within the meteor. He felt a story, cast through space, from another planet. It sang a song of metallic vigor, and somehow…[break][break]
He knew what he had to do.[break][break]
Navy raised his hand. The fall of the meteor slowed to a crawl. His body recoiled, hit with whiplash, struggling to stand. It was like the every essence of his being was clashing against Eternatus’s: draconic will versus steel resolve.[break][break]
“To crumble, huh? I knew you were a kid of mine. It’d take someone as dumb as a Navidson to say something like that. Tell ‘em, Howard! A man’s dream, his story…”

They are also, in his estimation, prone to being underestimated. Should Gominha and Thea find themselves in harm’s way, he prays that will be their strength.[break][break]

It might be rough, my guys like to try too hard.” He points a thumb over his shoulder at the cabal of dragons, fighters, and steely soldiers Navy calls his own. “But their heart’s in the right place. We wanna make sure you n’ Thea can keep your heads on straight if anything bad happens.”[break][break]
Standing up, the Fighting Master cracks his knuckles. Roland, his Iron Valiant, senses that he will soon be called upon to act. The one-armed fighter hovers just behind Navy, waiting to be called.[break][break]
“Come on, let’s see what you two’ve got.” And, in the end, they do. Navy sends Thea home later that day content he did his tiny bit of good, unaware that poisonous forces will lure her onto Hoenn’s grand stage.

He moves to the coffee. He pours. He drinks, and drinks deep. It doesn’t address the cause, but it alleviates the symptoms. Turning back to Gwyar, he nods.[break][break]
"I am sorry, Sir Gwyar. They’ll be calling me soon. I’m ready. We can talk after.” Which, unfortunately, they won’t. They won’t get much of a chance to speak at all until after he is kidnapped and thrown into the depths of a prismatic prison. Duty will call him away, the region will need him.[break][break]
But he does, in the end, give a good lecture.
