“Fuck!” He curses, more out of pain than frustration. The blow throws off his balance, sends him skipping a few steps forward before he can pull himself out of delirium. By the time he turns, he understands one truth: were this a real battle against the likes of jayden cross, he would be dead thrice over. Once because the blow would not be delivered with the flat, twice as his footing faltered, thrice as he turned his back towards his opponent.[break][break]
“You’re strong, man.” The words are heaved, spoken with a sheepish smile. Navy is no stranger to pain, not after the road he’s walked to become the Warrior. He’ll have to weather worse if he wishes to master the sword, fight the likes of The Devourer or The Harbinger.[break][break]
So, fighting down the pain, he falls into his stance once more. Owing to the bond he shares with his sworn sister, the pain already seems to hurt less. Getting used to just that one effect – the enhanced reflexes, the strength, his capacity to dull his own pain, will take time. Mastering all these many powers will be a quest that will take a lifetime, but they stand on the eve of war.[break][break]
Steel eyes fall to Ascalon’s glowing blue grace. They subtly raise to Gwyar’s sword. He marches forward, inclined to put a sudden theory to the test.[break][break]
The pain was a lesson. When he learned to box, he had to learn how to take a hit. He had to get used to the notion that he might get hurt. Accepting that is one of the fundamentals of martial arts, overcoming that fear.[break][break]
He moves with purpose, like a wolf towards a bear. Gwyar surrounds himself with a sharp steep arm, but what happens when that arm is directly attacked? He tests himself here, bringing his blade forward in an arc meant to bait out his peer’s blade, so that it might meet Ascalon.

“No big reason.” He grins, holding out his right hand. A newly-minted avatar understands little about how their power works, but the warrior closes his eyes and concentrates all the same. Some part of him knows how to do it, like there is suddenly a new limb sticking out of his novel. It’s like it has always been there, always been a part of him, the nerves were just dull until recently.[break][break]
The projection cast into his hands is hard to hold, frighteningly so. It is less a staff and more one long piece of wood at the center of an elaborate structure. Its weight takes him off guard, almost tossing him over the battlement. Power courses through the staff, like he holds history in his hands.[break][break]
Its head hums with power, and mist clears away over the horizon. On some level, it reminds him of defog, but not quite. Visibility is better, and for that he is grateful. It reveals a monster, lumbering to them through the crowd. Perhaps it was once a living thing, but now it is only a skeleton, piloted by Nihilego. He holds the staff out for Eris.[break][break]
“Wanna hold it? I wanna see if I can deal with that guy out there.”

In response to League HQ’s radio silence regarding the posters many of you have seen spread across the region, Sheriff Navidson advises his deputies to disregard the statement until further notice.[break][break]

Sheriff Navidson is in the process of trying to get in contact with League officials in Ever Grande. Please give Commissioner Goode and her council the benefit of the doubt until they speak on the matter. In light of the recent attack by Team Rocket, Dewford citizens are free to carry as many Pokemon as they feel necessary for their protection.[break][break]

Deputies are advised to be on the lookout for the individuals putting these notices up. Detain and question them. Sheriff Navidson and Deputy / Gym Leader Hyakkaryōran Tsubaki's Pokemon are at your disposal, should you need them.[break][break]

“So we’ve got dead things.” He nods at the latest creature to fall, courtesy of the well-trained Claydol. “Got angels.” A nod up to a chorus of stray Nihilego, too close for comfort but far enough away to move past. “But that ain’t even the worst of it. Now…” His voice lowers into something conspiratorial.[break][break]
“…the last thing you really need to see here isn’t something you’ll deal with most of the time. You have to go as far down in the sea as you can go, but I think it’s important.” And besides, it makes for an excellent stress test for Montgomery’s conviction.[break][break]
So, he leads on. The pressure mounts. Paranoia grows. Whispers coil around the warrior’s soul as they always do. Doubts try to take seed in earth salted long ago. They speak of how he failed his brother, failed his wife, about how PENELOPE LIVY and her ilk send him down here to die.[break][break]
He imagines there’s some truth to the thoughts. Fresher than those is the age old question about what skeletons lie in his newest deputy’s closet. Everyone has them.[break][break]
Not important. He reminds himself. Not with everything at stake.[break][break]
They make their way down, and at last they come to edge of the supermassive room he calls the heart chamber. Inside rests a massive Nihilego. The creature does not yet know that it is dead, consigned to perish once its transformation ends. They seem eager enough to undergo the change. A man with a scientist’s mind would wonder if it was some rite among the Nihilego.[break][break]
“You watch Galar’s battle circuit much? If you ever have to come here, probably ‘cause the League wants you to mine ore, you’ve gotta be careful. If you don’t have a dyna band and your Pokemon get too close to that organ,” he points up at a pulsing gem resembling, in the vaguest sense, a heart, “your Pokemon’ll dynamax. They’ll die.”

His eyes assess Gwyar as they never have before. Since aligning himself with the angels, he has made a point of not sizing up his co-workers. Who could take who in a fight is a fruitless question, a matter of young masculine ego. It doesn’t matter who would win most of the time. Win or lose, Gwyar would still be his comrade.[break][break]
It’s different when he’s beckoned to come, with all that entails. Gwyar is a big man, and Navy has seen the elegance in his steps enough. When moving with purpose, Gwyar reminds him of a Meowth that has spotted a coin. There’s purpose there, and liquid grace.[break][break]
His arms, too. Navy remembers his time in underground rings, boxing to earn ends meet. Tall men had long arms, and long arms meant he could reach Navy when Navy can’t reach him. Stepping closer is a trap, especially when he holds steel.[break][break]
“My funeral.”[break][break]
When he moves forward, he does so with a short nod and thoughtless movements. It is not that his motions are flawed. They are, in fact, technically correct. He stays limber, not allowing his feet to sit flat against the ground. He moves, and he lowers the blade. Both hands grip Ascalon before he can stop the instinct. Something spurs him forward, calls him to flick his blade up in an arc that starts on his right and ends high on the lefthand side.[break][break]

They’re alright. They breathe in deep of this sea’s noxious air, but they persist. Here be monsters, and they loom just beyond the wall of their safe haven. Navy, draped in the mantle of Warrior, idly draws back a bowstring. A solid metal arrow fires into the crowd of Nihilego and dead things on the other side, piercing it and sending ichor sprawling across the sea floor.[break][break]
“Didn’t think this many would show up when I decided to cull the sea.” His admission is sheepish as he turns to Eris. She’s just a child, cast into this darkness under the sea. She has a right to see this place, he thinks, and it’s better that she comes here with him than anyone else. Eternatus’s innards have killed lesser folk in droves, especially during the battle last year.[break][break]
“We’ll have to break through, if we wanna get back up top.” Before fear can set in, he asks her a simple question. “Yo, troublemaker. Your mom knew all about myths and stuff, right? She must’ve told you ‘bout some. What weapon did your favorite hero use?”

“Galar didn’t make me a warrior, Kouji.” Zacian meets Kouji’s glare, golden eyes cast in a shadow. Her sword returned to its scabbard, tied across her back. She stood there, waiting, allowing her sworn sword brother to speak to one who needs to hear his words.[break][break]
“You did.” He points right at Kouji, eyes falling to the younger man’s fists. He turns, and nods at the rubble. “The day we met, I was some punk. Feet between two worlds. Didn’t have direction. Told myself all kinds of lies. I ran scared through those caves. Thought I was going to die. Then, I met you.”[break][break]
He looks back to Kouji, arms folded. Time has changed them both, made them old beyond their years. Hoenn demands a high price to stand on its center stage, and for some their only reward is an early grave and a place far down in the credits.[break][break]
“And I had no choice but to be strong if I wanted to survive. Galar took me, gave me time to think, let me find myself…” A nod of acknowledgement to Kouji. “But it started with you.”[break][break]
“So stop acting like a pussy. If your Rocket pals don’t see things your way, get stronger. Make them see. That’s what it’s like living in a world ruled by the strong, right?”

It was an impossible command. Save the world. Better men had tried, in this world and so many others. Save the world, as if a single strike might do that. All around them were worlds, whole planets, unexplored places in the far reaches of space. They were cast in this realm of fantasy, desire, and possibility.[break][break]
Howard’s desire was made manifest in Ascalon. The blade grew, and grew. Energy gathered around it the likes if which is only seen in gods. It was a power uniquely Zaria’s, her legend made manifest. She was a giantslayer, working in a time long past to do just that: save the world.[break][break]
The blade’s twin manifested in her sword brother’s hands. It grew alongside Zaria’s Ascalon. Both charged up, seeming to fly, right towards Eternatus’s open maw. Eternatus gathered power, enough to destroy a planet, another dynamax cannon to write an ending to this tale in the blood of the vanquished.[break][break]
They raised their blades high. They screamed their defiance, their behemoth blades cleaved the dragon’s head in two…[break][break]
And all of them, without ceremony, breathed in the clean air of Dewford’s sea. They felt the cold chill of a titan, roused from the depths and turned upon the people it was meant to save.[break][break]
They had entered the Hyperborean age.

I remember being alone in the dark. You had already left, Father. Gone with your others, your trueborn and your friends, back to the light.[break]
How I hated that light. How I despised it. When I was spat into that realm of myth, made to live there, I despised my own flesh just as much. Humans are made of such worthless matter.[break]
Yet humans can do things nothing else in this galaxy can. A star cannot smile. A comet cannot comfort. Humans and Pokemon march to a beat all their own, unaware of the cosmos. They little understand their place in the universe.[break]
Through you, I come to understand that they simply do not care. They laugh, they love, they live. They return to their soil, never aware in the whole breadth of their lives what a precious gift they’ve been given.[break]
I despise you for that, too. Better to sit high, to not know warmth, to be consigned to the cold. I open my maw, and I mean to scream. In place of the scream comes a gathering of power. My scream is an edict, a call for your death. All three of you are so small, you humans and your hound.[break]
I wish this tale did not have to end. Being Crystal, or Tsubaki, was not a terrible fate. This long dream must end, and I must return to being as I once was and will always be. I scream, and not just in wrath. I scream in terror, that you will strike me and realize at the last this is a battle without hope or promise of victory.[break]
