Without doubt or second thoughts, Navy takes Montgomery down into the heart of darkness. They reach the bottom of a cave. By human rules, human logic, and human sense, this should be the end of the structure. A rift howls like a black hole at the far end of the chamber, inviting them to step beyond.[break][break]
“Freaky, huh?” Navy asks, lighting up a cigar. “And this isn’t even the end of it. Here, follow me.”[break][break]
Walking through the rift, they stand on the bottom of a sea. Sand is kicked up by every step. Clean air fills their lungs, even as water presses against their face. Omnipresent is a pressure on the chest, like they’re diving without proper gear. Navy’s sygna suit takes on the golden sheen of ancient myrmidons, protecting him from the worst of it, but hardly seems enough.[break][break]
His eyes tilt up. Far above them, angels rest like stars in the sky above. Nihilego watch them, weary of a foe they have come to know well in the past year. None draw close. Both sides know there is little to gain from a skirmish here, especially if the sheriff is simply patrolling with a new deputy.[break][break]
“Rangers are supposed to patrol down here, too.” He observes. “But there’s not many willing to come down here.” Despite everything, he manages a pained smile. “You couldn’t come up with something this crazy in a Virbank studio.”

[attr="class","monty"]Montgomery decided that whatever the fucking hell the people in Hoenn had discovered through their scientific advancements of this so-called Ultra Space, he hated it. Walking through the sea without gear, feeling like his ribcage would implode at any given moment, but being able to breathe like a fish, was far from normal.

"This is fucked. Your scientists are fuckin' insane. They shouldn't have done this."

Perhaps, all of their problems would have been avoided without this discovery.

The glassy Pokemon kept its watchful eye on them, although it had none. It was just a head with tentacles, staying still as they made their way through.

"So that's it, huh?" Montgomery felt a shiver trail down his spine. "Why don't they? Fear?"

There are places men are meant to go, and places they ain’t.” A gold-mailed hand waves up into the abyss, its siren song beckoning them into this heartless place. Mankind was ill made for this place. One need only feel the protest of their own body to understand that.[break][break]
“But someone’s got to make sure that,” his finger falls on the Nihilego, “don’t get up to the surface. The only real justice in the world’s the justice people make for themselves, and they can’t fight back ‘gainst stuff like this. So I do it for ‘em.”[break][break]
As they pass the Nihilego, a swarm of dead Sharpedo pass along on a path to nowhere. Crusted barnacles encase glass eyes which see nothing. They say they will never die, for death can only take you once.[break][break]
“And you can, too, if you want. But I won’t force you, or dock your pay, or anything.”

He shouldn't be getting fucking chills down his spine.

"Then, have they gotten to the surface? And, what happened if it did?" he asked, moving past the NIHILEGO with his sheriff leading him. He offered the creature a scowl, then turning his head forward.

Dead SHARPEDOS, lining the land, encased in barnacles that seemed to tell the tale that they had been long dead. He wondered if this environment was even friendly for them.

"No. I'll do it. Someone's gotta, like ya said. So, whaddya say? Show me whatta do."

“Farthest they’ve ever gotten is the cave. Sometimes, they try and break through.” He speaks grimly, remembering a hard fought battle alongside Noel Parker, another deputy. “Always come in twos. If it’s not me, take Deputy Parker or Hyakkaryōran Tsubaki. She’ll be the gym leader come May. There’s an archaeologist living in town, howard slayte, who helps out too. Can’t stress this enough. Never come here alone.”[break][break]
They move through sandy shores, across high cliffs. They swim through empty air. Eventually, they come to a base built long ago, when he first took up the mantle of guarding this land. Stepping into a grotto, they find creature comforts from the world above. The base’s equipment has been modified to function amidst all this pressure, and it has basic amenities. Even the light filtering through from above seems gentler here. On the far back is a wall.[break][break]
“I like to patrol along this route here. This’ll catch most of the places the Nihilego like to wander, plus all the logical spots for Rocket to enter.” He grumbles the word, Rocket, like speaking about them annoys him. “Crazy as hell, those guys. They’re trying to harvest the toxins those Nihilego produce. Nihilego are rock and poison type, so prepare accordingly.”

[attr="class","monty"]Montgomery almost interrupted him to tell him he wasn't afraid of no damn Pokemon, and he'd sure as hell would go down in a fight. However, with the serious veil that his superior held around him, he shut his mouth, holding a grim look across his lips.

A morbid thought crossed his mind: how many floating bodies might belong to the Hoenn League?

"So lemme ask ya this: do y'all have any clue what's Rocket tryin' to do with that poison? I know you said somethin' bout 'neurotoxin.' So, what's the use?" he wondered aloud, though perhaps he had a vague idea.

He wanted to hear it clearly from Navy's mouth to make sure that he was fighting for the right side.

There was a cocky laugh. "Good thing's I'm a steel-type specialist," Montgomery answered rather proudly.

The scenery changed, from that harsh, alienating sunlight to the more calming allure inside the base. He felt the tension in his shoulders fall a bit, though he kept his wits about him. Ultra Sea was a foreign realm. It wasn't meant to exist, nor was he supposed to be here.

So when he heard a strange noise to his right side, Montgomery tapped Navy to quietly garner his garner his attention.

“I’m not a science guy. Dr. Reyes or Morales could tell you exactly what the neurotoxin can do…” His voice trails off, doubting Montgomery is the type to seek out illeana reyes or Eva Morales for that. No. It’s about practicality, and that he can speak to.[break][break]
“They need it to make shadow Pokemon. That’s reason enough for me to not just let ‘em have it. I can’t abide folks mistreating Pokemon.” And for this man, who walks a tightrope of ideals, there is no worse fate he can imagine than being kicked into the pit of instinct. Oh, they’re powerful, the shadows, but the strength’s cost is high.[break][break]
“Glad I picked the right man for the job.” He throws out one of his own Pokemon, a miniscule Greninja named Hattori. If something has invaded their base, than it behooves them to clean it out before the next batch of rangers, soldiers, or HBIC officers get here.[break][break]
As if on cue, the last danger of the deep sea grinned at them. It had been a Sableye, once. Time and harsh waters had chipped away at its body, polishing the dead thing to a gem shine. It looked up at them with eyes that saw nothing, saw right through them.[break][break]
It lunged up to swing its gem shield at the humans, only to be knocked aside by Hattori. Its dead, glassy eyes looked up, making a break for the exit.[break][break]
“Some of the Pokemon that died down here in the battle, last April, don’t like to stay dead.” A moment later, and he adds, “I don’t like this. It’s trying to bait us into a trap. There’s probably more somewhere close by.”

[attr="class","monty"]"Shadow Pokemon," he echoed. Montgomery had heard the term before, but he couldn't say he was quite familiar with them in person. He wondered what qualities these Pokemon had that were so special to the average Pokemon.

He didn't bother to ask his sheriff, since he was pestering him with question upon question. Instead, he followed him ahead through Ultra Sea.

The powers of the space seemed to warp whatever Pokemon had remained. The SABLEYE Navy's GRENINJA faced was unlike anything he'd seen before. It was like a shell of its former self. Perhaps it was slowly turning into one of those creatures... the NIHILEGO.

Glass. Unfeeling. Cold.

"Ain't nothin' I can't take care of." As they continued onward, they were encountered by another haunting remnant of time — a DRAPION clacking against the ground. He removed a ball of his own from his belt, allowing his CLAYDOL to LEVITATE towards it.

A simple EARTH POWER would remove their obstacle. "Onward, boss?"

“So we’ve got dead things.” He nods at the latest creature to fall, courtesy of the well-trained Claydol. “Got angels.” A nod up to a chorus of stray Nihilego, too close for comfort but far enough away to move past. “But that ain’t even the worst of it. Now…” His voice lowers into something conspiratorial.[break][break]
“…the last thing you really need to see here isn’t something you’ll deal with most of the time. You have to go as far down in the sea as you can go, but I think it’s important.” And besides, it makes for an excellent stress test for Montgomery’s conviction.[break][break]
So, he leads on. The pressure mounts. Paranoia grows. Whispers coil around the warrior’s soul as they always do. Doubts try to take seed in earth salted long ago. They speak of how he failed his brother, failed his wife, about how PENELOPE LIVY and her ilk send him down here to die.[break][break]
He imagines there’s some truth to the thoughts. Fresher than those is the age old question about what skeletons lie in his newest deputy’s closet. Everyone has them.[break][break]
Not important. He reminds himself. Not with everything at stake.[break][break]
They make their way down, and at last they come to edge of the supermassive room he calls the heart chamber. Inside rests a massive Nihilego. The creature does not yet know that it is dead, consigned to perish once its transformation ends. They seem eager enough to undergo the change. A man with a scientist’s mind would wonder if it was some rite among the Nihilego.[break][break]
“You watch Galar’s battle circuit much? If you ever have to come here, probably ‘cause the League wants you to mine ore, you’ve gotta be careful. If you don’t have a dyna band and your Pokemon get too close to that organ,” he points up at a pulsing gem resembling, in the vaguest sense, a heart, “your Pokemon’ll dynamax. They’ll die.”

In the corners of his eyes, he swore he saw flashes of members of team Rocket, those he'd left from home... a burning house and the smell of charred bodies... an explosion...

Navy's voice brought him back, bringing his mind a bit clearer. Still, his hand rested close to the handle of his gun resting at his side.

"..."

He stayed silent, staring up at the deceased NIHILEGO. And, much like the sea they breathed in, the gem pulsing as though it was alive would make him believe it was alive, had Navy not told him. His CLAYDOL had been placed back into its Poke ball, so he didn't get to see the deathly dynamax.

Yet.

"I'll keep that noted. And try to get a fuckin' dyna band. Shit."

“And that’s ‘bout all she wrote, Deputy James.” The sheriff offers a grim smile, teeth grinding against one another. “We should head back. Don’t like being near this thing. Too many bad memories.” Memories of Ironsides, a Skarmory loyal to him until the last. Mixed in are memories of all the awful things witnessed in the core, terrible truths not meant for mankind. A ghost haunts him, a ghost of a fallen Gardevoir.[break][break]
“The people who live in this town…none of ‘em know how to fight stuff like this. How the hell could they? They’re just normal people.” His eyes are cast in deep shadow by the abyss, but they glisten in the dark like a sword in firelight.[break][break]
“That’s why I’m here, and it’s why Rocket can’t ever get this place. So if you’re sure you wanna do this, I’ll have ya on the schedule starting next week.” What a sparse schedule it is, and what a relief to add another name to it.
