“This don’t feel like Goode. I could buy Monroe doing something like this, if things got bad enough, but her?” He knows the history Thomas must share with Dahlia, given the bombastic way he announced his departure from the Elite Four. “Nah. I don’t buy it. League HQ’s bein’ real sketchy. I’m heading up there soon with Noel Parker to see if I can get all this shit sorted out.”[break][break]
He turns to look at Thomas more fully.[break][break]
“Could you or Desi help Baki look after Dewford while I’m gone?”

“Been a while, huh?” He asks the question casually, like they do not drive through a destroyed town. Dewford has suffered devastation at the hands of ancient ice. Folk rebuild. Life goes on.[break][break]
There are many moving parts at play. There are those who lay the brick, and those who plan how the bricks are laid. Yujin Ha is the latter, and the brain hidden behind her beautiful face will be key to the town’s reconstruction.[break][break]
Navy has the window cracked just enough to let the smoke drift out. It wafts out into the sea breeze, blown somewhere far away. He finds it strange, seeing her again. Time has changed him, weathered him, battered him, but like his town, Sheriff Navidson stands. A longsword wrapped in dark rawhide leather rests within arm’s reach of the sheriff, a weapon that stands in stark opposition to the image projected by the League of a rugged cowboy cop.[break][break]
“Most of the damage is in a straight line from Granite Cave, down through this side of town, and out to the sea.” He taps on a map as they come to a stop sign, demonstrating the path the ice took during its rampage. That the town survived at all is a miracle.[break][break]
“Thank Arceus you’re crazy enough to come back to Hoenn. Most of Goode’s other engineers aren’t up to the task.”

He notices its texture, the way the rugged tobacco on the end contrasts with the cool, slick brown rolling paper. His eyes lift up, finding paxton concordas sitting across from him, and he can only think to say two words.[break][break]

Behind them, hooked up to innumerable machines, rests The Warrior’s body. Its chest falls and rises in the gentle rhythm of rest. Machines close at hand attest to one fact: he is alive, and his brain waves seem the normal brain waves of a man resting. Only two facts hint that something peculiar is happening at all: that there are two of him, and the soft mist gathering around their ankles.[break][break]
Navy refuses to be another MATIAS SILPH. He imagines, when Matias Silph first bonded with Groudon, that his co-worker did not intend to be Matias Silph, The Volatile. Precautions must be taken. As little as he likes all the medical equipment, he submits himself to Sapphire’s care.[break][break]
“Sometimes, I can walk around. I don’t really know how to pick where I go. Sure I’ll figure it out. Most of the time, I go to this misty place called the Slumbering Weald – like the one from Galar.” A small pause, and he thumbs at the cigar again. The sensation vexes him.[break][break]

“Fuck, man!” Despite the pain, Navy smiled. Chivalric as he would be in the eyes of the rest of the world, honed as his blade would be, Kouji roused some old instinct in him. He would always be a child of Slateport streets. That would be a part of him, right up until the day he died his final death. This son of the soil rose, baring his fist, and spat blood.[break][break]
“There we go. Hit me like you’ve got something to prove.” [break][break]
He say the words, and he’s rushing in once more. His ears are ringing, but his head is clear. His heart is sure. When he strikes, with Shuwen standing on the edge of the battlefield, he does so for the simple joy of fighting. There’s nothing deeper than that, no special pull, just an earnest desire to see another warrior fight him.[break][break]
Zacian, by contrast, has already tired of this fight. Her spirit remains resolute, but she sees this for what it is: battle for the same of battle. Every warrior deserves their rival, and Navy needs his, but this battle goes on too long for her taste. Would that she had the voice to apologize to these Pokemon, sword caught in her maw.[break][break]
Energetic light gathers around the blade, and she fires off a blast of condensed moonlight. She is stricken, and there is victory in that for the dragon. Steel bends under the attack, she feels pain, but pain is a warrior’s old friend. Steel can be mended. Bones will mend.[break][break]
She delivers the moonblast at point-black range, fired from the blade’s edge.

“Well…it’s not the old Ascalon.” He feels a sheepish need to clarify, at the very last moment, before he jumps the barrier. “Howard named it. Zar—Zacian and I aren’t real good at naming things.” A man whose name for an Unown was Namey hardly needs to clarify that point.[break][break]
Instead, he’s off. He jumps down, onward and well, into the horde of dead men and their Pokemon. Sharpedo, long dead, their eyes crusted over with barnacles, rush towards him, the first line of defense. They are dead, nowhere near as strong as they were in life. It evens things out. His skill with Ascalon is a thing born of instinct, clumsy, yet practical.[break][break]
In each stroke of his blade lies foreshadowing of what will come as he continues his climb up the warrior’s road. He will be great one day, a peerless swordsman. His blows are like the teething of a baby, struggling to find its footing. He fights, he cuts, and he trusts that he will feel a twinge of energy at his back when Eris follows.

Dewford is battered, but it stands. Its folk carry on as best they can, rebuilding and readying themselves for the next storm. There will be another storm. There will always be another storm. Life, in Navy’s estimation, is charting your course despite those storms. Weathering them, and enjoying the calm, gives him purpose.[break][break]
He says a prayer of thanks that this is a good day, even if it is a mite colder than it should be in the first days of summer. Regice left its mark, rent in ice that will never melt, and much of the island’s ecosystem has been disrupted. Luckily for Navy, he knows an army man who once worked construction.[break][break]
Navy is, not for the first or last time in his life, grateful for Eddie. Everything just feels like it’s going to be alright when he’s around Eddie, especially when it comes to stuff like reconstruction. Navy’s got his Pokemon out in force helping the human construction workers. Cassius, his Machamp, carries long iron support beams under each of his four arms. Behind him are Machokes carrying wheelbarrows of concrete.[break][break]
Shuwen stands over the fighting Pokemon, arms crossed like a stern foreman. The burned bear says nothing, but nods at the humans as they pass. His eyes linger on Eddie, a hint of approval beneath his stoicism.[break][break]
“He likes you.” Navy observes, wiping sweat from his brow. He’s just finished putting insulation in a wall, taking a break for water. Even in mild weather, hydration is important.[break][break]
“One hell of a way to start summer, huh?”

Navy and his Dragonslayer’s eyes widen at Yakuza’s valor. Dragonslayer raises its shield, saving Navy from having to do the same to avoid being blinded by the light of the blast. Elemental fury bounces off of the Obstagoon, redirected in every direction save that which would lead them towards the humans and their Pokemon. It’s heroic, and it raises his estimation of the Pokemon and its trainer.[break][break]
She’s trained this guy well. He thinks.[break][break]
“Not a dragon, but the more I see these guys fight, I think they might be dark type.” He gives a curt nod to Dragonslayer, who takes this as his hint to go on the offensive. A sword must attack, and a sword must defend. What separates a novice from a master is knowing when to do which.[break][break]
The Fighting Master’s order sends Dragonslayer onto the offensive. The blade sways out, a stream of pink light left trailing behind it as it makes its way towards its opponent. With every dwindling inch, energy builds within the Aegislash. Tera crystals surround them, and they spur the blade on. Power builds, and when it finally strikes…[break][break]
An explosion rocks the clearing, loud and decisive. The tera blast unloads pent up fae energy onto the dark machine, blasting it back down into the cavern. Navy doubts the monstrosity is dead, these paradox pokemon prove themselves harder and harder to kill as time goes on, but it will not bother them for some time.[break][break]
“Do you have any Pokemon you can ride?” He asks, pre-emptively drawing two pokeballs in anticipation of an answer. “We gotta get back to a ranger station, pronto. More’ll come ‘cause of the noise.”[break][break]
The paradoxes have scented blood in the water, and they long to drink deep.[break][break]
Two Pokemon are thrown out: Silver Bullet, a Rapidash with a mane of silver flames to match its name, and Slow Dancer, a Glastrir of Galarian myth. Both turn to scan the area, neither liking what they see.[break][break]
“Take whichever one you want.”

“Good.” This time the word is spoken out loud, with an educator’s eye. Ettie assists him in a most trying task – humbling dragons, and showing the power of her pack while she does so. Smaug and Nameless are, unsurprisingly, caught off guard. Though Smaug is more tested, having been his mount of choice in the battle for Regice last fall, he still lacks the true grit of Vortigern or Arthur.[break][break]
Like so many, he coasted by on easy prey, on creatures who break at the first sign of trouble. When an iron head meets his charge, he cries out, momentarily confused, recoiling but soon redoubling his efforts to strike. Navy’s Nameless Salamence feels its frail bones fry from the inside out as the wild charge advances upon him.[break][break]
He cries, and tries to fly into the air.[break][break]
Things are looking bad. Best to apply a little more pressure, see if Ettie holds up to a second round of cheating. He raises his finger to his lips, and he whistles.[break][break]
“Grendel. Spin.”[break][break]
Grendel was something of a local legend in the seas around Dewford. Navy remembers his father speaking of a Dragonite that guided sailors across the waves. It is one of the few good memories he has of the man. Grendel arrives in a rush of jetstream and cool air. His ice spinner disrupts the battlefield, buys the flock of dragons a moment of time.[break][break]
It is not the only trick Navy has to play. He holds up a tera orb, which resounds across the battlefield with a shard embedded in Smaug’s finger. His Roaring Moon dons a crown of earthen glory. He peers into the vastness of infinite possibility and grasps a world where he has no need for wings. His terrible weight slams upon the ground, creating an earthquake that forces Navy to grip the safety bars of his platform like they might die.[break][break]
“Hold onto something!” He warns Ettie, just as Nameless, emboldened, flies into Ruffian in a double-edged attack, promising to hurt him just as much as his foe.

Both clowns are hit. Navy throws out Dragonite, who uses Ice Spinner to disrupt the battle. Roaring Moon is now tera ground and uses earthquake. Salamence uses double edge and is not long for this ~~world~~ fight.

“Nothing’s going to hurt you, kiddo.” With his free hand, he ruffles her hair. “I promise.” Not here. Not while he has both hands. Not while his footing is sure. Below, the horde starts to advance. The approach of their giant pushes them to march forward, to make their incursion upon the world of the living and the good and the light.[break][break]
“Keep it close. I’ll show you something you can write about when you’re older and the most respected professor on mythology in the world.”[break][break]
They live in an age of heroes, and just now, a hero sees a dragon that he must slay. Navy raises his free hand, and imagines what will happen if they fall. He imagines the funerals they will have, and Isaac Merlo’s tears. He imagines Kyle’s frown of disappointment when they meet in the afterlife, and he imagines Rocket coming for his town.[break][break]
None of that will come to pass, not after Ironsides and all the rest have sacrificed so much for him. In his hand appears a blade that promises victory. It is twin to Zacian’s massive blade, with which it shares a name. Ascalon, a dragon slaying sword, wielded by Hoenn’s first knight. It is a blade that will inspire stories in generations to come, a blade that seems alive with gentle blue light.[break][break]
“This is Ascalon, and I’m gonna use it to make sure those Nihilego don’t get to you.” It is more than a promise. It is gospel.

Navy takes the blow now, just as he did back then. The pain makes him grunt, but his footing is sure. People, oblivious to this battle, rely upon him. He isn’t fighting for himself, nor just Tsubaki. This town relies upon him to keep it safe from monsters. That resolve dulls the pain, makes it manageable. He steps forward, lip bleeding, and socks Kouji right in the diaphragm.[break][break]
“Come on, man! You can do better than that!”[break][break]
Just beyond, Zacian bows her head in acknowledgement of Tyranitar. It is not just any foe, not even any Tyranitar, who could weather Ascalon. The blade was forged from conviction and sacrifice, and that makes it mighty in ways those without such things will never understand. Her golden eyes rise to see the crown upon its head.[break][break]
Tera energy is a blessing and a cancer all in one. It makes heroes of murderers, and brothers of dragons. She does not speak, but power begins to gather along Ascalon. She readies to unleash its full potential – as much acknowledgement as she can grant one such as he. There are those she must bring this power to bear against just to stand a chance. Tyranitar, now, is not one of them.[break][break]
Yet he could be.[break][break]
She dashes forward. Ascalon grows, and grows. The behemoth blade lashes at the Tyranitar, a wave of energy rarely seen in the waking world crashing against the dragon.

As Bladestorm nests and roosts, gentle chirping sounds from nearby. Newborn Skarmory, who have, up to this point, never seen an adult specimen of their kind, begin to excitedly chirp. They all flap their wings at Bladestorm, trying to draw the supreme specimen of their kind’s attention. Their chittering is accentuated by the soft ting of the miniscule birds’ wings all clattering together.[break][break]
The sight distracts Navy, just for a moment, as he listens to Josh. It warms him to see Josh’s Pokemon help, and it warms him just as much to see the newborn chicks found in the ruins of Granite Cave take to another of their kind so well. Only then does he realize that Ironsides and Bladestorm never met. The thought makes him sad. Navy imagines they would have liked one another, as much as Ironsides can like anyone.[break][break]
“I know, man. It sucks, but the region’s at war.” He remembers a faint echo of noah faber and how he described Gabe’s training. Self defense. Too often, the young and foolish look to the badges they are given as proof of their skill. They get a taste of glory, and they think they can take on Rocket – the whole world, if they must.[break][break]
Such dreams end on the edge of a blade.[break][break]
“There’ll be time for races after we win. Folk are scared, and they want the training you can provide. You’re one of Hoenn’s best. Kyle saw it. Ho-oh saw it.”[break][break]
The subject feels too grim to dwell on, and so Navy raises his tone to something warmer. There are ways for this Knight of Thunder to alleviate the woes of his body, should he so choose.[break][break]
“Make time to head up to Petalburg, man. Isaac and Suicune’s pools will make you feel better. Probably won’t speed up your healing too much, but you’ll feel like a person while you rest there.”

An unlikely trio gathers outside of FERNANDO SILPH’s office. Navy, illeana reyes, John Sullivan. Navy and two of the League’s longest tenured officials stand, wanting answers. The alchemist, jinxed, and warrior are all, individually, fierce opponents. When bonded together for one purpose, they are a deadly combination.[break][break]
“We’re not leaving.” Navy says coolly to the secretary barring his way. “Not ‘til Silph comes out here and gives us some answers.”[break][break]
He’s heard about Illeana doing the same. Sullivan has been desperately scrambling for answers. The secretary knows who they’re dealing with. It is not an empty promise – they will stay here, as long as they need to. People out there in the wider world, people like Andrea Vaneau and robin coello, need answers. Some such folk, like Noel Parker, waited outside to hear word from the three chosen to confront Fernando directly.[break][break]
So many people have sworn their allegiance to the League and, at the eleventh hour, the eve of war, their lords pull a stunt like this. It stinks, and the silence from HQ is deafening to many. Navy looks the secretary in the eyes, and they look away first. A slow nod, and they pick up the phone. While they speak to someone, presumably Fernando, he turns to look at the other two.[break][break]
“Arceus, what a mess.” He deflates, filling the time before they are given further instructions. “They can’t throw all three of us in jail, huh?”

The blue she-wolf’s eyes sized up her newest foe. Though there is no story solidifying a lone Tyranitar as a legend, their species enjoys fame and notoriety across the world. Even the girl she was, so long ago, heard of that famed species.[break][break]
Yet still, she steps forward. When Kouji makes it clear that he’s pushing this battle, the Warrior Pokemon resolves to afford him the respect he is due. If he would push himself, even knowing he has lost the battle of wills, then she will honor him with battle. Her maw opens, wrapping around the grip of her sword once more and drawing it forth.[break][break]
Her sword brother allows his knuckle duster to fade away into mist. His knuckles are bare. Not even Ascalon hangs at his side. To use another weapon would invite dishonor upon this battlefield, and Kouji deserves better than that. When he steps forward, he does so like he did so long ago, in that cave where this all began.[break][break]
They’re older now. Space-Time has seen to that. Their bodies battered and scarred from the long war. By the grace of his sword oath, he has found the strength to swing, and so he swings at Kouji with everything he has, arms disappearing into a flurry of blows.[break][break]
“Her name’s Zacian.” Navy answers as he closes in, swift as a leaping wolf himself. “Punch as much as you need to.”[break][break]
Zacian has no time or tongue for words. Instead, sword in her mouth, she crosses the distance between Tyranitar and herself as if it simply did not exist. Ascalon’s edge slams into Tyranitar’s armored hide. The sacred sword cuts with conviction against the earthen wall.
