They begin the long walk to the Dyna Tree. No Spectrier seats the Pale Rider, but a mere Rapidash. Silver Bullet doesn’t seem less worthy a steed, but the Rider wishes all the same that he was taking Valkyrie to meet the King once again. Zacian, Ascalon strapped across her back, leads their march forward.[break][break]
There has been much ceremony and circumstance. Dewford is in shambles. All the League readies themselves for war. Responsibilities have kept the Warrior and the Galarian ambassador from this, a journey Zacian has wished to undertake with quiet urgency. She was once human, and that human knight made a pledge to her king. She wishes to see him, to behold him, to see if myth and time has changed him.[break][break]
“It’s good that we’re doing this, Elise.” Navy assures his companion, more to fill the silence than to make a real point. It’s a bad habit of his. Avatarship does not change his core, and how much he hates to go places in silence. “Think it’ll give Zacian peace of mind, paying her respect to the king. Getting her orders…”[break][break]
A few points of the Galarian fable were never clarified. He never found Calyrex’s body. Somehow, he suspects Zaria and her brother had the same poor fortune. Navy imagines that they came to the same conclusion as himself after a while: there was no point chasing ghosts.[break][break]
But this Calyrex is no ghost, and he yet lives. If nothing else, sword brother and sword sister would pay their homage, with Charles and Elise to bear witness.[break][break]

Men are so eager to vaunt heroes honored by statues that they forget the carvers that wrought them from stone. There are old things in the world, things which stand the test of time. Dewford requires hands like Yujin’s, if it means to endure long enough for men such as howard slayte or Remiel Calcifet to study its bones in some age so far in the future that Navy can’t comprehend the gulf between now and then. “You better be getting enough hazard pay to buy a place in Alola when this is all said and done.” A soft honk from the car just behind him tells the sheriff it’s time to move on. The laugh he gives is sharper, respecting the stones of someone who would honk at the sheriff’s truck. The folk here are survivors. They survived the two battles, Kyogre, and Regice. He won’t begrudge them their moxie. [break][break]
“You can thank Dialga or Palkia for the beard. Got a little misplaced in space and time.” He pulls onto a road by the sea, a long line of frozen ground leading out to open water. “Too many gods in Hoenn these days for my taste.”

Not simple. Simplicity implies dullness, which would pull apart his mind, one thread at a time. Simplicity implies repetition, and repetition is hell or the path towards its gates.[break][break]
The word calls to mind uncomplicated cases from another life; movie stars needing protection upon foreign shores, goods that needed running, and investigations into human matters like infidelity. He got to the bottom of things, swung when he needed to, and he got pain. He rarely heard stories that made his heart ache.[break][break]
“Sometimes.” He admits, in that vague half-acquiescence men who aren’t all that great at discussing feelings do. “War’s messy. Wish I was in Galar or Unova sometimes. No war there, just pros who fight ‘cause it’s fun, and people cheer ‘em on for it.” The last word rouses a huffed laugh, and a wry smile.[break][break]
“Though being a proper celebrity like a peace time E4 doesn’t sound fun.” Torchic chirps just loud enough to break the cadence of his words. “…sorry, don’t usually talk about myself like this much.”

“Come on,” he urges like a prayer sent out into the universe, “come on, Kouji.” Navy questions himself as his heavy boots twist upon the dirt. When he steps forward, taking blows, throwing blows, his arm finding Kouji again across arm, shoulder, and chest, the question keeps ringing through his mind.[break][break]
Is this something I should be doing?[break][break]
Arresting Kouji now would be easy. Zacian stands in the background, watching the Kommo-O rouse himself, ready for war, hustle forward back into the fray. Even if Kouji has forgotten himself, lost his way, his Pokemon haven’t. They feel the simple joy of combat, a joy that spurred warriors forward long ago on ships in search of plunder. What sagas those warriors wrote of their journeys, their triumphs, and their defeats. howard slayte loved to tell him about them, when they were deep in their cups, imbibed and in good company. A pang of longing feels his heart, missing those days.[break][break]
He’s a warrior. Navy thinks as he gasps from a hit, returning as good as he gets with another slam into the younger man’s stomach. If either of them had any food in their guts, he imagines they’d be retched up across the granite under them. The only sustenance they need just now is blood and good battle.[break][break]
He’s lost his way. A warrior can’t die laying down. That’s not how our stories end.[break][break]
They end in glory, infamy, or defeat. There’s no other way. Navy does not lust for the spotlight, not anymore. That’s a younger man’s game. His lust is directed towards the climax, an ending, and there is no ending worth telling with Kouji as he stands now.[break][break]
His strike is accompanied by electricity. Zacian howls, her howl making her intrepid sword grow stronger still. Her wild charge forward, the glance of her golden eyes as her great body pivots across the battlefield, signals to him an understanding.[break][break]
She knows. Some part of her knows. When they meet upon a worthy battlefield, Kouji must die. On Navy’s head be what lives he ends between now and then, but it is one warrior’s duty to another to rouse him, to pull him up, to prop him on his feet, and push him to walk.[break][break]

Much happens in not a whole lot of time. That, the sheriff thinks, is the essence of combat. Only with the luxury of replays can you see where the errors happened, how you arrive at the moment where time catches up and you realize you’re standing there with a blade in your hand. They’re both alive, though the blade is broken. Both bottom corners of his cheek flush red, just above the beard, heightened by Gwyar’s words.[break][break]
“Sorry, man.” He turns his attention to the rising sun as well. Dawn always brings with it hope. Light has won out again against the darkness of the cosmos. Their planet keeps on spinning. Navy trusts Gwyar not to come upon him, especially with a sheathed sword. They’re not old men, but they’re seasoned enough to not patronize one another with the lesson of constant vigilance.[break][break]
“Apple don’t fall far from the tree with smithing.” He returns Ascalon to its rawhead leather scabbard as well. They’re not done, not by a long shot, there’s still time before their responsibilities pull them away from one another. He goes to grab another sword. He does not insult the steel by thinking it plain, but it is a simple sword, not the stuff of legends.[break][break]
“Can’t rely on that. Not with people like Cross on the other side.” Somehow, he knows a day will come when jayden cross and he will cross paths. Navy is no swordsman, but his kinship with Zacian and knighthood clap the title upon him.[break][break]
“Ever fought him?”

As the chain lashes out, holds a dead monster in place, an eye opens in the darkness beyond the silver light. It is like a wound in reality, a jagged cut that opens like a bleeding birth canal to behold what occurs down in the deep places where logic and good sense suffocate. Another opens, and another, and another, until the darkness seems wholly replaced by magenta cuts, looking out at what might be an interloping god.[break][break]
The Warrior does not care. He has beheld that eye on the face of one he loved, and killed enough of his life to venture forth into that impossible battle. Standing tall atop his saddle, he prepares for a plunge that some would call madness. Light gathers, conjuring from nowhere, a miracle dispensed by crystals some would call a cancer. They gather, and the white streak in his hair contrasts against the dark brown all around it.[break][break]
He readies himself, and he jumps. Nihilego and other creatures of the deep try and move the monster held by the red chain. Movement avails them not. Ascalon grows, grows into a blade big enough to fell a giant. Both hands grip, both hands bring the blade down in a cleaving motion, and the giant is no more. It shatters into bone dust so fine its particles outnumber the eyes surrounding them.[break][break]
Ascalon shrinks, and he holds it in one hand. Silver Bullet circles around Eris and Reiner, a guardian beast protecting its charges. The fiery stallion leaves space for Reiner to help him attack, his horn piercing anything which grows too close.[break][break]
“That’s the biggest one down!” The Warrior cries out, fighting his way back to them. Ascalon is sheathed, and he draws forth a weapon he is far more comfortable with. An ancient warlord of the people that spread Perrserker across Galar named his battleaxe Ragnarok, that he might always remember that there would come a day when even gods died in twilight.[break][break]
No death will come this day, to gods or any living thing. The Warrior’s axe is a tool of close combat, and he cleaves a path back to her. Paranoia threatens to set in, but he is used to it, his steel eyes look upon the thousand magenta cuts and meets them evenly.[break][break]
“We can get out of here, Eris.” He says, mounting Silver Bullet. “Come on. Eris, Reiner, let’s break through.”

Summer is here. Though Dewford has been devastated by errant gods and saved by ancient heroes, life goes on. Nature works its old, tried and true circle. Old life ends, new life begins.[break][break]
The thought offers the sheriff some comfort as he sits on the beach. To most, it might look like he’s enjoying a leisurely morning with a beautiful woman. Little do they suspect that he’s working. Across the sand, scattered like little jewels, eggs are slowly beginning to hatch. Hatchlings, oblivious to what occurred mere weeks before, crawl out of the sand and behold before them a world bright, blue, and new.[break][break]
They turn their eyes upon the sheriff and his companion, the first creatures not of their species that they will see in the course of their long lives. A small Greninja, one eyed and burned black, emerges to try and help coax them towards the waters. They’ll be safe in the water. A Palafin is waiting for them there, waiting to guide them out to currents and their own kind.[break][break]
Above them, Wingulls and Pelipper circle. They sense a meal. They, too, little care for what happened here before. Matters of ice that was old when their grandfather’s grandfather was young, sculpted by a precursor people, are so alien as to be inconceivable to them. What they understand, what they know, is that the babies below are food.[break][break]
It warms the sheriff’s heart to know life goes on, even as he sits there and looks up at the birds menacingly. His clothing is a queer sort of fashionable armor, dark blues contrasting with reds, golds, and stark whites where the bones of his hands and feet sit. It affects the image of a resting Garchomp. The sheriff’s sygna suit, when activated, synergizes his soul with the Garchomp lounging in the sand farther up the bank, towards proper green grass and the town beyond.[break][break]
“Thanks for coming here, Ms. Watanabe.” He says the Airi, the aforementioned beautiful woman accompanying him on this venture to protect the babies. “Dewford needs all the help it can get.” His gray eyes turn to the turtles, taking their first curious steps.[break][break]
“Wish they got to come into the world under better circumstances.”

“I hate winter these days, man.” Navy sits down, settles against a concrete wall, and turns his attention to the ocean. Dewford is an island, part of Hoenn’s subtropical climate. It is not meant to feel cold here.[break][break]
“Whichever Navidson decided to bring his family here back in the day made the right call. Doubt he figured his descendant would have to deal with not one, but two ice gods deciding to muck the weather up.” Even in summer, it feels a tinge colder than it should be. It’s still hot, swelteringly so, but a body used to the climate can tell. [break][break]
“Thank Arceus we won.” Even if it took an ancient hero and their attackers working with them to finally put a coffin in Regice. Both sides will call it a pyrrhic victory. Having never received an education beyond the eighth grade, the sheriff little understands that word. What he does understand is that civilian casualties were minimal, and he browbeat the League into forking out money for the funerals of those that did die.[break][break]
He looks around, sees they have some measure of privacy. Though his burned bear is known around town, adored by many of the young adults returning home from college even, he’s still intimidating enough for many workers to give him his space. They’re alone, alone enough for Navy to confess.[break][break]
“I’m scared they’re going to attack again, when the League launches its offensive. I don’t trust declan walsh as far as I can throw him. He’s not gonna honor Fox’s ceasefire. We’ll be gone. I’m Elite Four, and signed to an AQUA contract besides. You’re a soldier, and we’ll need all the firepower we can get with monsters like the Quinns and bryan delarosa on the field.”

“People forget all about the small towns.” Navy says the words ruefully, eyes turning towards the destroyed town. “Until something happens. Nobody cared ‘bout Dewford until the rifts showed up in the cave. Nobody really cared until Rocket decided to go for the seal stone.” [break][break]
And afterwards, so much of the region moved back to bigger and better things. This small town was forgotten, except in thoughts and prayers. Money was given for repairs, a new gym leader was appointed for a terrible task, and those in a high, distant capital turned their attention elsewhere. Such is life, and Navy does not think he blames them overmuch for that.[break][break]
Yet all the same, these small towns are not important until it’s too late. Having Josh and Shalin visit Petalburg while Andrea Vaneau protects Fallarbor puts his mind at ease. [break][break]

“I’ll put it to ya this way,” he laughs the jovial laugh of a comfortable man, “I wouldn’t play Poker with Gunner or you.” Which, he thinks, carries the point well enough. His best lies, these days, are lies of omission and silence. Rarely is he asked the right questions by the wrong people, a trick that carried him well in the days where he had one foot on the right side of the law and one in the shadows.[break][break]
“As for therapy? Nah. Nothin’ beyond the mandated stuff for law enforcement and E4 trainers.” At this, he shifts in the chair with a smidge of discomfort. There’s no lie here, only typical masculine bravado, an urge to not admit some base weakness. “Never…really saw the need. Plus it’s expensive. Back when I was just a private eye, it was hard enough to keep the lights on and send my brother to school. Seeing a shrink on top of that? Nah.”[break][break]
Which, he thinks, could give a throughline to trace back all sorts of character deficiencies Kyle gave him crap for before the champion’s untimely death. Lucky for Navy, that doesn’t seem to be the point. They want to make sure he’s psychologically sound, cared for, that he won’t become another monster they have to defend the people of Hoenn against.[break][break]
“Not to put too fine a point on it, but I don’t think you guys have to worry about Zacian going…” Navy struggles to finish the sentence as he remembers flashes of a terrible battle, one he only saw on TV. Paxton lived through that, one of Hoenn’s chosen five.[break][break]
“Well, I don’t need to tell you what storybook knights are like, and she says Hoenn and its Pokemon League are the kingdom she serves.”

Somewhere along the way, a Pokemon slips free. Silver Bullet isn’t a creature meant for water, yet the steed manages just find beneath the waves. In half a heartbeat, Navy is in the saddle. Reiner and Eris charge, obliterating a monster that was mere moments away from sneaking up on him. Foes to the left of him, foes to the right. He holds his sword with grit and clumsy, instinctual skill and charges.[break][break]
“We’re getting out of here!” He insists, despite the odds. Silver Bullet cries their agreement, the mane that is the source of the name flaring all around him, yet the flames hurt him not. Ancient stories say a Rapidash had to truly trust their rider not to burn them, and there was certainly heat to the flames should Eris and Reiner draw close enough to feel its residual energy.[break][break]
Just ahead is the bestial skeleton piloted by the Nihilego. It lumbers down towards them. Its hand sweeps low, and Navy beats it back. It feels as if his arm is on fire. One hand holds the sword, the other grips the reins tight enough to crush a throat, desperate to stay in the saddle. Were he not dressed like a desperado, he would look like the fabled Pale Rider beaten into the tapestries in his gym chamber.[break][break]
“Hold ‘em steady.” He says to Eris, trusting in Reiner or her to have some trick. Light gathers around Ascalon, here in the bowels of a slumbering god.

And he is beholden, and the words and the alcohol kindle within him a fire that will burn bright in the days to come. There are healthy ways to grieve, but he has not been afforded a life that will allow him that contentment. Just like with Gabe, he won’t stop until his heart burns out of him, its fuel spent and the body destroyed. That will be how he honors Kyle, and only when it is almost too late, deep within the depths of a prismatic prison, will he realize his mistake.[break][break]

“You suck at taking compliments.” Gabe teases the older man, lightly poking him in the ribs. “Weird, considering how many dating sims you play!” He laughs the laughter of someone carefree, as if they are not drinking in a tavern on the edge of life and death, sipping milk and harder stuff to pass the time when it is the most abundant currency in the world.[break][break]
“I’m not too proud to admit I’d make the same decision in your shoes.” The boy nods, his lack of shame earning a chuckle from Dustin and Olivier alike. “But it was you that did it, and that’s gotta count for something.” Once upon a time, when Kyle came back from Johto, blessed by a god, his head filled with flights of fancy about all the grand adventures he could have. Even if Hoenn was too dangerous, surely there were other places, other journeys he could take.[break][break]
But no, his older brother insisted he stay, get an education, not think about all the fun things he could do, right up until the moment where he had no legal basis to stop him. All the while, of course, said older brother was running around with one foot in each side of the law. Even if he stayed on the sidelines of Hoenn’s main stage, he investigated executives, guarded movie stars, got hired to go settle work in Alola…[break][break]
The thoughts make his drink taste queer and sour. At least the talk about paradox grounds him.[break][break]
“I don’t see as much as I’d like. I saw…” His eyes, the color of iron, turn upon Olivier. “Roland died, but his soul never came here. He looks different. That’s a paradox. You’re more like…”[break][break]

What vicious alchemy she diffuses, turning water into steam as a mere byproduct of her existence. She is not the only one who covers her ears, the metal grating against raw spatial energy. Two bodies move through open air, that sound the inevitable result of a clash between matter. A curl of discomfort traces down his spine, makes every hair on his arm stand on end.[break][break]
It offers him a glimpse of both hope and fear. If she is this fearsome as a friend, he takes solace in the fact that she will make a deadly enemy for Rocket, the Dark Triad, and Eternatus. Fear enters the equation when thoughts of bodies strewn about intrude upon his mind. What he sees is a thimble of restraint, a cup abundantly full, ready to run over. If her philosopher’s stone could turn blood to gold, he thinks they would all be rich by war’s end.[break][break]
There are but two creatures who seem wholly unaffected by the notion of this battle. Dragonslayer and its appointed prey clash in a vicious dance. That, too, is its own alchemy. The blade pulls back, just enough to see the harm done to itself, an irreparable scar in the perfect illuminated runes along the edge on one side. Hattori sees it, and he too knows fear. He feels the same shiver down his spine as his Lord, and presses on with a scream.[break][break]
Hattori leaps with lupine grace and seems more than a small frog. An aura gathers around him, vicious like the god he dares to face. Dragon Hammer is not a technique meant for one such as he, yet he wields it all the same. The aura affects the visage of a roaring dragon’s maw over the tiny frog, the hammer in question the flames which spew from its mouth.[break][break]
Dragonslayer, seeing what it thinks is an opportunity, skirts past the god while his companion preoccupies its attention. It recognizes a threat, and so he seeks to redirect the retaliation that will follow. Light, bright as a star, falls upon Illeana. It places a spotlight upon her, turning all eyes upon her.[break][break]
“Not smart!” The fighting master shouts at the sword, grating sound still making his ear ring. He presses a boot into soft earth, skirts the edge, tries to make for Illeana, as if his proximity will do anything to stop what now seems like the inevitable breaking of a dam.
