“You ever watch baseball?” Power gathers around the Voltorb, which threatens to explode out with terrible force. “One of the few nice things my dad ever told me: I’d make one heck of a good pitcher.”[break][break]
He lines up his shot. Navy takes aim. With the power of mind, metal, and mettle, he feels the Voltorb. It would be…the simplest thing in the world, to throw it right at the electric titan.[break][break]
And so, he does. It soars through the air, screaming its fury all the while. It makes contact with Regeleki, energy spreading out. Even the colossal titan takes a step back, taken by surprise.[break][break]
“Huh. Well, if that worked…” There’s other Voltorbs. They scream. They, too, are launched. Navy is given piece of mind when he sees them fall at Regeleki’s feet, still squirming. They’re angry, but they’ll live. Voltorb are one of the few species of Pokemon he’d consider openly hostile to human life. In the end, they’re just evening the score.[break][break]

Kouji’s punch is punctuated by the sound of thunder. Dracozolt’s macabre, mismatched body little hints at the creature’s strength. Charged by a legend’s wild charge, it dispenses an attack with reckless, happy joy. It’s enough to send both legend and sword brother reeling, but both recover before any true advantage can be obtained from the momentary lapse.[break][break]
Navy rubs at his jaw, feeling the tender muscles where Kouji’s hit him. His body isn’t what it once was. By all rights, Kouji’s punches should be battering him, like repetitions of a wave upon a rock. It doesn’t, and he finds that he is fine. Gray eyes flick down, lost in thought, considering the ramifications of this realization.[break][break]
This fight isn’t fair to him. Navy thinks. Not by a long shot.[break][break]
Having been on the other side of this equation, man versus one basking in the power of infinity energy, it is a raw deal, a terrible proposition. Navy feels the beating his body should be taking, feels the strength coursing through his body, and understands why these powers prove such an intoxicating brew for men such as bryan delarosa and MATIAS SILPH. They were already great when gods blessed them. All those blessings did was make their brights brighter.[break][break]
It’s power, power enough to change the world.[break][break]
Yet all he wants, all he needs, in this moment, is to play the part of a wall. He squares up, exhales, balls his fists, and throws another punch aimed at Kouji’s ribs.[break][break]

The words are almost teasing, paired with Zacian rushing Dracovolt with an earnest desire to play rough.

“This is Navidson.” He calls over the radio, back to a ranger station in the Great Chasm. Someone’s listening on the other side. Folk in the Chasm are excellent at listening to him when he’s on the scene, given how he’s one of the few people mad enough to brave this place with enough regularity to register his presence upon the paradox Pokemon.[break][break]
“Now as all of you know, I’m not a scientist.” While he presses down on a walkie talkie with one hand, the other grasps some strange technology he little understands. It whirs and whines like a child throwing a tantrum. Whatever’s going on here, it isn’t normal. Far from it.[break][break]
It feels like he’s looking at a greater part of some mystery not meant for him. While they leylines seem to converge on Mossdeep, they began in the tunnels below his feet. Electricity and scorching heat roll across the chasm. Tiny, a baby Skarmory discovered in the ruins of Granite Cave, chirps close by.[break][break]
“But this ain’t natural. Feels like there’s an electric current in the air, or that my Skarmory might burst into flames at a moment’s notice.” Which, in the end, almost happens. Tiny flaps his tiny wings, sending out a wave of flames out across the field. Navy almost jumps out of his skin.[break][break]
“Woah now!” He shouts, stamping out a fire that almost burned his jeans. “…I’m going to make some rounds, gather some more data. Someone make sure I come back to a plate of beans and rice.”

“I don’t know.” He admits with crossed arms. “But there’s only one I figure I can find out.” The Regeleki bounces above them, quicker than a giant has any right to be. Like its hyperborean cousin, the electric giant retains its gift of movement. In a region where their movement is constrained, he imagines that is a rare and useful boon.[break][break]
“You know what to do, yeah?” He asks Zacian. She turns her attention back to their foe. Without another word, she charges forward. Bouncing about like some mad thing, she begins a dance of death with the supermassive legendary.[break][break]
Sacred Sword dances against a wild charge of electricity. Fighting spirit and electricity clash against one another again and again, whirling across the ground before the two like some macabre spinning top. Zacian holds Regeleki in place, buying Reiner time to attack.[break][break]
Above them, Voltorb bask in the electric city, laughing at tone another in their alien language. Navy knows not what they say, but he feels a strange tingle when he looks upon them, as if some part of him could reach out across space and simply…[break][break]
…pluck them up.[break][break]
The Voltorb shrieks.[break][break]
“Huh.” Says Navy, holding his hand out and making the same gripping gesture he would with a pokeball. The Voltorb floats in the air.[break][break]
“Zacian gave me some interesting powers, huh?”

It makes him thankful she’s here, even if the words carry with them dark implications. They’re in this together. When Walsh and Kanto’s nameless, faceless boss make their move, it will be against a region ready and willing to fight them.[break][break]
“Huh.” Is what he voices, stopping his truck at a scenic overlook. Once, it gave an excellent view of the water below. Now, it’s half-destroyed, the plaque giving a spiel for the tourists split in half. Down in the water below, walter delmar’s ship sat waiting to carry the attackers back across dark waters before Regice decided he had other ideas.[break][break]

Whatever people once called this place home built natural lightning rods atop some of their structures. One such structure sits above them. As Eris explains St. Elmo’s fire to him, streaks of mysterious blue flames sift through the air. This place is very conductive, he’s beginning to realize.[break][break]
From the heavens, lightning sculpted into a specific shape for a specific purposes crashes into the rod. Zacian stands ready at once. Metal shudders. A makeshift generator baked into the side of the structure sparks before finally fading into nonexistence, scattered to the winds.[break][break]
Regeleki, or whatever’s left of it, stands before them. Navy is no expert in legendaries, except for the practical bits. Firsthand experience with Elise Calcifet, Josh, and others has taught him that some can split parts of themselves off. These weaker shards are still deadly. Howard Slayte isn’t a liar, at least not so blatantly, not at that precise moment. What he said, he said with total sincerity.[break][break]
“Eris.” He says calmly, as the eyes of the great electric titan turn upon them where they hide. “How d’you tell the difference between a real legendary and their shard?”

“We’ve got bunkers in Dewford, repurposed from the Three Days War. There’s probably something similar in Rustboro. If you got with the city’s planner, you could probably find some places you could use to hide away civilians.” Rocket isn’t stupid, Navy prays. It wouldn’t be prudent to burn the region they wish to conquer to the ground. They won’t attack civilians so long as they stay out of their way. Out of sight and out of mind in the bunker, that’s the way.[break][break]
“Either way, it’s good to be prepared. Any town on the coast’s in danger from Kyogre. It doesn’t really care ‘bout sides right now.” He wonders if gods, true gods, ever do care about human matters like affiliation. Gods demand. It’s part of what makes them gods. If the League or Team Rocket get in Kyogre’s way, they will simply be tossed aside like so many droplets of rain.[break][break]
A short hmm from Zacian tells the riders that they’re close. Calyrex, the true Calyrex and not the shard, will be by the tree. The Hero of Many Battles looks to Navy, her eyes and a soft tilt of her head motioning for them both to dismount. Navy nods, doing so and tying Silver Bullet’s reins to a nearby tree. Whether Elise brings Glastrier with her or not is up to her, as Glastrier is a mount worthy of a king.[break][break]
He steps forward, where months ago, the king was entertained with stories. Beneath his poncho, Navy carries a small cask of mead for when he’s afforded the chance to be informal. For now, as the knight among their company, he steps forward and announces them.[break][break]
“I, Navy, come on behalf of Zacian, Hero of Many Battles and Crowned Sword of the Pokemon League. She, and Ambassador Elise Calcifet, request an audience with the High King.”[break][break]

“Airi.” The word tastes breathy on his tongue as he speaks it into existence. It flows well, better than Watanabe. “Then you can call me Navy. Pretty much everyone does.” Most of the press releases released by the League, per his request, do the same. Navy seems a fitting name for a champion rank trainer, like something out of the old movies that inspired generations of trainers before him. It’s a better name than Michael, he thinks. Only people who aren’t his friends use Michael, he’s observed.[break][break]
“At least they get to say they were born on a pretty day.” The day is the picture of summer, something worthy of being snapped and put on a postcard. Another Navidson, an ancestor he has heard much about, made a career out of being a photographer. There’s some moment, one sixtieth of a second, that could speak more to the lives of these turtles than whole reels of film.[break][break]
“Rustboro’s only a hop and a skip away, I guess.” As is his hometown of Slateport. He won’t say no to help from rangers in other stations. Navy tries as best he can to stay professional, his eyes doing their herculean best not to steal glances at the ranger, though he finds much to admire there. With how perfect her makeup is, how she rocks the uniform like a runway model, he imagines she’ll end up on recruitment posters before too long.[break][break]
“Look alive. They’re making a swoop down.” The first of the Wingull begin their assault, diving down to snatch up babies. Navy inclines his head to Airi, giving away nothing of the cogs turning in his head. “Airi, I’m gonna block ‘em. Have your Pokemon go on the offensive.”[break][break]
It is no Pokemon that uses a move, but Navy himself. Squatting, he pulls in infinity energy from his sync stone. Something of his lounging black dragon becomes a part of him. Navy breathes deep of a dragon’s power, and raises the earth. Stone edge is a technique with much applicability. Navy raises solid stone, sculpting a protective wall above the advancing turtles to block the wingull.[break][break]
“Now!”

A fire grows in the east, like dawn over the sea. It grows, an orange streak of extreme speed across the ground. Arcanine, in ancient days, was called the legendary pokemon. It was a title the storied line held before modern scientific terminology developed the term into a proper taxonomy, which did not include Arcanine. As Voyager rushes across the landscape, a blur of smooth perpetual motion, it is easy to see why the ancients would classify it as such.[break]
Voyager has always felt a sense of fierce loyalty to Noel. He allowed the younger trainer to ride him when they chased down a biker gang together. When ultra beasts and dead things threatened Granite Cave, he had Noel's back. Now, in Dewford's darkest hour, he comes to help once more.[break]
[break]
He howls, and with that howl comes the morning sun. Night turns to day, and above them the legendary dog conjures their very own sun. To the people of Dewford, he shows a dog's unconditional adoration. He loves them, as is his nature. To love is to protect, and so he looks up at the creature with a low snarl growing in his throat.[break]

Again, he builds up speed. He rushes forward, reckless, wild, unwilling to compromise or allow Noel to meet his end here. Fire gathers around him, and he slams into the Naganadel in a bright flare blitz, skidding past and leaving the morning sun to aid Noel.[break]
Dynergy swirls throughout the town, and Voyager moves on to help shepherd the remaining townsfolk to the safety of the bunkers.

There’s fire in illeana reyes. In times such as these, he can’t help but admire the fire. They’ll need much of it and more to survive the days ahead. It spreads and kindles something within him.[break][break]
Navy’s cool gray eyes find the secretary when they speak. This person, in over their head in a tough situation, does not wish to give bad news to three of the League’s finest. At least John Sullivan tries to calm them down. They deserve better than being caught in the crossfire.[break][break]
Even still, something has to give. A house divided by itself cannot stand, and the first step to nipping this division is to have the council mend the cracks. Spurs clank against the floor as he walks to the door serving as Fernando Silph’s barrier, separating the councilman from those gathered outside.[break][break]
“Silph!” He shouts, and gets no answer. “Silph, it’s Navidson. Councilman, are you alright?”[break][break]
There’s a seed of justification. He turns to Illeana and Doug.[break][break]
“Dr. Reyes, Colonel Sullivan. We live in dangerous times, and I think it’s our job to make sure the councilman’s safe.” He turns back to the door.[break][break]

His foot slams into the door, driven by purpose. Another kick comes after the first, and eventually the wood gives. The sound is loud enough for those waiting outside, such as Andrea Vaneau and Noel Parker, to hear.[break][break]

“Guess there’s nothing out here after all.” He speaks beneath goggles and a shawl, masking his face. It’s no disguise, mere coincidence that his identity is obscured. Navy hates travelling through the desert. It’s a place that, in no uncertain terms, disagrees with him. Sand gets everywhere; it’s the kind of place that leaves him feeling unclean.[break][break]
Best leave that work to Ollie and his rangers, were it not for the dangers posed to travelers. Giant slaying has become his calling, and so he must do his duty.[break][break]
“We’ll head back to the ranger station soon. Water’s running low.” [break][break]
It’s then, right then, that he hears the sound of battle. Something rises from the depths, ancient monsters returned to antagonize this battered region. A short nod to Eris is coupled with the release of Ralsei, his Decidueye. The ghostly owl soars into the sky, surveying the landscape, identifying the threat.[break][break]
A short barrage of green arrows buys them time. Ralsei hoots, realizing exactly who they’re saving.[break][break]
It’s a shame Zaria isn’t here.[break][break]
“Howard, we’ll back you up.” It’d be a shame, to leave this man to die. No one deserves to die alone, their destiny unfulfilled, with their murderer towering high above them.

And he rides, rides back up to the surface, praying all the while that she will never dare to return to these depths not made for man. Navy scoops her up like some protective jungle predator snatching up its young by the scruff of her neck, riding on towards the rift, back to a world where they can breathe, where little threads of paranoia and fear don’t tug at the mind.[break][break]

Names and identity are human constructs. Eternatus simply is, and it will be regardless of what man or some successor species ordain it to be. Silver Bullet’s hooves clatter across seashells and kick up a dust cloud of sand. Shots and slashes and stray attacks from his own Pokemon aid the Rider as they ascend back towards the breathing world.[break][break]
Somewhere along the way, he finds another helpless thing, alone and afraid. He tucks that Pokemon onto the back of his ride, he urges Silver Bullet through the rift, and they are greeted by crisp afternoon sunlight. No one, in all the world, could imagine what lurks within the remains of this cave; no one save the dead, and those who have ventured their themselves.
