They begin the long walk to the Dyna Tree. No Spectrier seats the Pale Rider, but a mere Rapidash. Silver Bullet doesn’t seem less worthy a steed, but the Rider wishes all the same that he was taking Valkyrie to meet the King once again. Zacian, Ascalon strapped across her back, leads their march forward.[break][break]
There has been much ceremony and circumstance. Dewford is in shambles. All the League readies themselves for war. Responsibilities have kept the Warrior and the Galarian ambassador from this, a journey Zacian has wished to undertake with quiet urgency. She was once human, and that human knight made a pledge to her king. She wishes to see him, to behold him, to see if myth and time has changed him.[break][break]
“It’s good that we’re doing this, Elise.” Navy assures his companion, more to fill the silence than to make a real point. It’s a bad habit of his. Avatarship does not change his core, and how much he hates to go places in silence. “Think it’ll give Zacian peace of mind, paying her respect to the king. Getting her orders…”[break][break]
A few points of the Galarian fable were never clarified. He never found Calyrex’s body. Somehow, he suspects Zaria and her brother had the same poor fortune. Navy imagines that they came to the same conclusion as himself after a while: there was no point chasing ghosts.[break][break]
But this Calyrex is no ghost, and he yet lives. If nothing else, sword brother and sword sister would pay their homage, with Charles and Elise to bear witness.[break][break]

The Galarian Ambassador is seated upon one of the King’s two steeds, a Glastrier named Eirlys that takes the diplomat to the long path towards the Dyna Tree in Ever Grande City. She holds the reins onto the icy mare while the floating shard of Calyrex doesn’t ride with her and hovers at the side. It had been a long while since she had been bestowed the shard from the actual High King and much has changed from the Sheriff too.[break][break]

Namely, the presence of the legendary Galarian hero would’ve astounded her too. But the Galarian Ambassador keeps a calm front, never wanting to look the least undignified for a visit to the League’s Calyrex.[break][break]

“It’s good that you’re letting her do that.” She gives a smile over to the riding Sheriff and Zacian while she sees the legendary blade strapped onto the back of the hound. “And I must congratulate you on getting Zacian’s blessing. She must have seen your virtues firsthand.”[break][break]

Still, the anxieties about the upcoming war that involved the League made her scared. She knew that would be participating, but he probably absolutely can’t get her involved in fighting. The prince would never want her to have blood on her hands as much as Remiel would with his patron, Zekrom.[break][break]

“I’ve been doing better on the assignment that the King gave me. gave me some missions that we were doing for the rangers where he let me take charge and I’m looking to be promoted to Ranger Captain of Rustboro City to take administrative duties in keeping the city’s people safe during the upcoming war front.” [break][break]

While she replies to the sheriff’s question, she wonders if the League’s Calyrex was doing okay for himself. He was busy too, a King had to do his work in protecting the city from giants.[break][break]

“ has told me to use the embassy to shelter those who have no part in the war. I’ll have to do my part in barricading the entrance and keep Rustboro's people safe from the war’s bloody course.”[break][break]

“Huh.” Some part of him wonders if protocol allows that; this notion of being both a Galarian ambassador and a ranger captain. It’s a question for and the council. “Rustboro’s pretty close to the sea. With Lugia, pretty much nowhere by the coast is safe. What kind of prep are you guys doing to make sure you’re ready? Sounds like you’ve got a good plan.” He looks at the dyna tree, growing ever closer as they ride. “You know, given how Rocket’s a terrorist org instead of a proper country, you’d be well within your rights if you had the Galarian troops on hand at the embassy help with shoring up defenses.”

The ambassador has played chess before. Remiel played with her when they were children and the crown prince has always beaten her every time. She knows that he was one step ahead of her when he makes his moves and he cautions her at using the king piece, an important one, a little too early when checkmating.[break][break]

It wouldn’t be prudent to burn the region they wish to conquer to the ground. They won’t attack civilians so long as they stay out of their way. “Either way, it’s good to be prepared. Any town on the coast’s in danger from Kyogre. It doesn’t really care ‘bout sides right now.” He wonders if gods, true gods, ever do care about human matters like affiliation. Gods demand. It’s part of what makes them gods. If the League or Team Rocket get in Kyogre’s way, they will simply be tossed aside like so many droplets of rain.[break][break]
A short hmm from Zacian tells the riders that they’re close. Calyrex, the true Calyrex and not the shard, will be by the tree. The Hero of Many Battles looks to Navy, her eyes and a soft tilt of her head motioning for them both to dismount. Navy nods, doing so and tying Silver Bullet’s reins to a nearby tree. Whether Elise brings Glastrier with her or not is up to her, as Glastrier is a mount worthy of a king.[break][break]
He steps forward, where months ago, the king was entertained with stories. Beneath his poncho, Navy carries a small cask of mead for when he’s afforded the chance to be informal. For now, as the knight among their company, he steps forward and announces them.[break][break]
“I, Navy, come on behalf of Zacian, Hero of Many Battles and Crowned Sword of the Pokemon League. She, and Ambassador Elise Calcifet, request an audience with the High King.”[break][break]

from the great dyna tree, calyrex emerges. the high king speaks telepathically now, requiring no mortal puppetry that had once been subjected to , and in that fateful memory of galar.[break][break]

"hast thou wielded my shard with honor and intent, elise?" the hare asks. "and you, the pale rider!" evidently, the calyrex had already discerned the elite four's final tale as one of navy's own. "thou bringest me not valkyrie, but the very sword of our people... what kindness may I render unto you all today?"

Bunkers were used during the events of the Darkest Day and she’s sure that the rest of the city’s people can be safer down in the bunker from the wrath of Lugia. There was the problem of encountering Kyogre from the sea too, a legendary Pokemon that was still on the frenzied side. Both Rocket and League were attempting to recover it to no avail. [break][break]

“I will be prepared for Kyogre too. I did hear that it is still causing trouble in Hoenn’s ocean waters.” Her reply came to the sheriff earlier when they would finally approach the Dyna Tree itself and she dismounts from her Glastrier. The icy mare comes to accompany her rider while Elise and the shard of the hare king they’re being granted audience with makes the approach to see the High King himself. [break][break]

A telepathic voice comes into her mind from the real Calyrex. He no longer required to possess a vessel like the last time that all of the people who came to the Dyna Tree told him stories. [break][break]

The Calyrex asks the Galarian Ambassador if she had wielded his shard copy of himself with honor and intent. Elise gives a deep bow of her head in being granted the audience from the monarchical rabbit himself.[break][break]

“It is good to see you again, Your Majesty.” She greets him first in the exact courtly diction that the King uses with her, spoken like a true Galarian princess of her name and lineage. “Yes, I have wielded your shard with honor and intent. It will be a disservice if I had wielded it dishonorably and unintentionally without showing my training as a diplomatic figure and princess of my country.”[break][break]

Beside her, the shard of Calyrex simply floats and listens to the conversation between the King and the royal ambassador.

Zacian looks at her king as he descends to meet them. She closes her eyes, a rare bout of melancholy overcoming the great hero. Her thoughts are her own, but she soon opens her eyes and bows her head low. A four-legged creature cannot kneel, so the dip of her head suffices. A slight glance to Navy reminds him of proper etiquette.[break][break]
The Rider takes to a knee. Though Calyrex is not his liege, a title he reserves for , the High King is afforded the respect due one of his station. There Navy stays, on his knee, looking up at the king until told otherwise. That he has learned the truth of his final tale is not surprising, though it embarrasses him all the same. Elise gives him an answer, one Navy feels the need to clarify.[break][break]
“She used your shard bravely when we were all kidnapped by, Galar slips into his words like an old habit, “those blackhearted rogues called the Loyal Three. His healing saved many lives.”[break][break]
I will not be merciful in giving you your final sweet release of death.[break][break]
Yet still, those words, spoken by Elise when presented with their vanquished foes, linger in his mind. She was not alone in the sentiment, but all the same, the knowledge of that that placed turned his fellows into haunts him. Discomfort plays across his face, but it is downplayed by an old trick from another life: omission.[break][break]
“She plans to become Rustboro’s ranger captain. We were just discussing how best to shore up the city’s defenses.”[break][break]
A curt cough from Zacian reminds him of his reason for coming here.[break][break]
“As for Zacian and myself, she wished to pay her respects to her king. We’ve made each other a promise.” Zacian’s eyes sharpen. “Uh, sworn an oath to protect Hoenn and Galar together. That story’s very long, but I’d be happy to share it with you over some mead.”[break][break]
A pause, and he adds something else he cannot resist voicing.[break][break]
“Thank you for calling Valkyrie by my name, and for letting me ride her. I saw her again when Zacian and I made our oath. I miss her a lot, and I know she misses you too.”

Calyrex’s words pull at thoughts in his heart, questions about what it means to be bound as he is to another. Valkyrie lives on in his heart, or so he says, but he does not think that is what the king means. He has questions, about avatarship, and about strife, and about the burden he feels even now Calyrex tests Elise to see if she can bear.[break][break]
Perhaps it is his time in Galar that leads him to pose the question as he does.[break][break]

At times, the ambassador probably forgets that Rocket has their own Calyrex in their territory. Navy affirms this to her and she gives a little apologetic bow of her head. “I am sorry, I sometimes forget that Rocket does have a Calyrex of their own. I too can feel that he is readying himself for the same war the League will be in soon.” But now, she too can see that the League Calyrex’s other self, the Rocket’s Calyrex, readies himself for the same battle, a war that will pit the League and Rocket against each other.[break][break]

The subject goes from war to how stories will end as the fate of Hoenn does shift in possible futures. A question is posed to both her and Navy as she does wonder how her story would end too. She is not selfish enough to fight for her own future because it would make her seem cold-hearted to the people that she served as their ruler.[break][break]

But the royal ambassador fought for the future of her people and for the Hoennians now too as a selfless gesture.[break][break]

“My story ends when…” Elise gave it some thought now, even when the future would keep changing for everyone else. “I’ve accomplished everything I’m doing to live up to being the ideal ruler for my people and creating a more gentler world for people to live in. My wish is for both my people and Hoenn’s.”[break][break]

That was a dream that Navy shared too. An idealistic one that she’s sure Rocket would mock.[break][break]

“I am sure that Rocket would call this a weakness, but it is in my nature to act as a selfless and compassionate person who only puts everyone's needs above herself.”

Zacian’s eyes meet those of her sword brother. This is a question she finds most interesting. She sits in silent judgement, wondering what truth Navy will speak into reality. Navy looks back at her, listening as Elise offers her own answer.[break][break]
How will my story end? He questions.[break][break]
Navy imagines his life as a book. What a story that book would tell, written in black and white. Details would be missing, as they always are, emotion divorced from the events by time’s withering hand.[break][break]
Michael Navidson the Warrior, called Navy at his own insistence. Murdered his parents. Sat on the sidelines until the penultimate hour. Took up the sword, joined the fight. Shown the way by and far too many others.[break][break]
That is not an ending. His story’s ending is his own to write, a privilege given to precious few.[break][break]
“Thought it was gonna end with my death.” He admits. “Zacian made me promise that I’d work for a different ending. Guess if I had to pick…” Navy closes his eyes, and describes the world he sees. “…it’d end with me helpin’ rebuild, once the war’s over. Maybe I’ll go into civil engineering, or architecture. War’s awful. It destroys stuff. Wouldn’t be too bad to spend the time I have left after all’s said and done buildin’ something for my kids to enjoy.”
