Far, far away, a voice called Howard’s name. It was faint at first, as he fell. The sensation of strong arms pressing against his chest grew. Somewhere far away, the red eyes of a frightful beast faded. That was a dream for another time, another place, a story that will never be told. Fate brought him elsewhere, charted a course that led him to a man who shouldn’t exist.[break][break]
“Howard. You need to get up.” That same old man shook him awake, breathless and stern. When he saw his efforts bore fruit, he stood and moved to the window. The very stones of the castle rumbled.[break][break]
“The castle’s under siege.”[break][break]
Navy took no shame in helping Howard dress, and the same was done for him. Armed and armored, they rushed to join Zaria up on the high walls of Hammerlocke. Waiting below the gate was an army of dead men. Their skin was rotten from decay, jaws slack. They wore old armor rimed with frost. Their blades, though, were sharp.[break][break]
Navy’s eyes fell across the army of einherjar. On the far side, ruinous sword in hand, was . The last of the four had shown himself.[break][break]
“I thought I’d save you a trip, Navidson.” Said the Cursed, Bladelord of Galar. “Face me.”[break][break]
The voice carried across miles, spoken with a king’s might and a warrior’s certainty. It was a powerful voice, but it was not Jayden’s voice. Navy had never heard Jayden Cross speak, but he looked like he had seen a ghost.[break][break]
“I like his style.” Said Crystal, who raised her bow and fired an arrow. It flew across the battlefield, ‘til it was mere inches away from Jayden’s face. At the last second, he raised his blade and cast the arrow aside. “Nevermind. He’s going to make us work for it.”[break][break]
“Ever sallied forth from castle gates, Squire?” Zaria grinned.

And the end comes for Doug. It would be a kinder fate, were it you that had to suffer. Pokemon, as they so often do, bear the burden of mankind’s sin. Ruin pours into the bear – ruin from your doppleganger, and ruin from his patron. It is a preview of the whole world as it will be, soon enough, should these creatures have their way.[break][break]
It starts in the soul, which means you see it in the bear’s mismatched eyes first. They corrode from the inside out, a cancer that spreads without recourse. Doug is walking dead. Doug is the damned, fighting on without realizing what’s wrong with him. Pokemon are pure things. He carries on, fighting for you, until his last breath.[break][break]
The collapse comes without warning. Doug falls, and his skin begins to rot. It peels away, revealing all the ugly truths bubbling beneath the skin. There is no soul beneath, no high esoteric wisp that leaves. There is meat, dying meat, and he dies for you. His dirge is the sound of a sword clashing against a bowl, again and again and again.[break][break]
Zaria, donning the hero’s name Cyan, tries to change her form. She shifts, or at least makes the attempt. She fades in and out. Not good enough. Not real enough. Not yet. Not here. The story grows stronger. Hints of a greater blade, a promise of victory, shine through the feather, but not yet.[break][break]
“Stay the course!” She commands. “Steel yourself, or he died for nothing!”

This veteran of a thousand battles does the impossible: it forces the immovable earth back, if only by a single step. You’re given space, space enough to move. Space enough to fight.[break][break]
The world breaks at the edges around you. For a heartbeat, you are back in the cave. Your eyes open and you see primordial ice climbing, climbing, climbing. Heroes rest within the wyrdlight below, cast in a kaleidoscope of color. They close again and you are back, cast in the role of Squire battling this perilous foe.[break][break]
You stand upon forsaken soil. You toil through lawless seas. The Void calls to you, and you must answer. Though this great beast would interfere, history repeats itself. She will not allow it, not here. She forces a battle on equal footing.[break][break]

There are only more words it is compelled to say. It judges you, and beckons, and you reject that call. Somehow you, small and insignificant as you are, stand against this cursed earth.[break][break]

Its avatar looms high. A man guided by fear reaches out, ready to bring ruination upon one who would defy their destiny.[break][break]
“I think not.” A voice cuts through the darkness. Zaria stands, clad in her armor. A magnificent golden crown blends into her hair. Ironsides’s blade flickers in and out of existence. One moment, a simple feather. The next, a blade wreathed in flames. Every element of man and mon struggles for dominance within the sword.[break][break]
She jumps past you, and her cyan cape billows as if cast in a windstorm. Her blade, meant to fell behemoths, strikes against the bowl. It does the impossible, moves the immovable, forces its head back up. With it comes a break in the darkness. Light shines, Hoenn light, a hint of the sun you strive to protect. Zaria’s blade resounds against the bowl, a high hum heard by a royal in its ancient tomb.[break][break]
“You’ve a lion’s heart, Howard.” She praises you, falling to your right side. Though you have no blade, she will serve just as well. “We stand with you.”[break][break]
And to your left, a bear, loyal enough to follow you even in this dark place.

He had only visited Galar – the real Galar – twice. His journey there took him far to the south, to the Crown Tundra, where the old ways yet lived. “That’s for history to decide.” He whispered before he was announced. Heroes, he thought, rarely knew they were heroes. Others declared them at such. Often, the difference between hero and villain lay along a blade’s edge. Victory ended one truth, and propped up another. That kernel of truth grew into an ideal that would long outlive the heroes.[break][break]
The roar of the crowd drowned out his thoughts. These people adored him. They were blessed with a clear sky thanks to him. Peace was returning to their land, piece by piece. Hardened warriors raised their swords. Ladies clapped for him.[break][break]
It felt right – the peaceful expressions they wore. Being their hero roused warmth to his cheeks, reminding him of a younger man’s dream. That man dreamed of being the champion, of usurping his best friend’s seat, of bathing in the adoration of Hoenn. He thought he saw the faces of those he knew from Hoenn – citizens he had helped along the way.[break][break]
The gates opened, and he was received with a hero’s welcome. Roses rained on him. Zaria seemed most at ease. Crystal, by sharp contrast, seemed to long for nothing more than to hide away. Most of them simply ignored Vortigern, who seemed out of place in a hero’s company.[break][break]
“Arceus.” He said later, when they dined in the hall where the high king once sat. “This feels like the first real meal we’ve had in a damn long time.” Roasted Torchic were served up amidst green and berries. Whole Emboars were roasted over a fire, their meat served up warm. Oil shot down his beard with each bite, so ravenous was the Rider’s appetite.[break][break]
None at so much as Zaria, who piled plate after plate before her.[break][break]
“More.” She ordered. “More meat.” The order was given with the severity of a battlefield command. She matched Vortigern pound for pound.[break][break]
“That sure wasn’t here when I was here last.” Navy nodded at the empty throne, which seemed more a black obsidian monolith that sprung from the ground and stretched to the roof like a great tree. Small stairs were carved into it, leading up to a place for a man to sit. It looked like an uncomfortable throne, as any throne should be. Another crystal sat affixed to its center, shining with yellow light like a bolt of lightning.[break][break]
“The empty seat of High King Remiel.” Would that and his Zekrom were here, that his people could have a proper ruler for a little while. “This place remembers him, too.”

“It was one of the four kingdoms that remained standing. It had…three kings and one queen.” His voice strained as he pulled at the words, like he was pulling something heavy out of a closet thick with cobwebs. “King , King , and King . Never really asked if any married Queen .” It didn’t matter, he supposed. They kept the kingdom safe. They kept the flag flying. Hammerlocke was the bastion holding the three northern kingdoms together.[break][break]
“Huh. I forgot Prince got the big promotion to King here in the dream.” The thought that he could forget something so important weaved a thread of despair into his mind. “Anyway. They welcomed me here, like they did everywhere else. I’d bring them news, inventions, and letters. I’ve never told you how people got separated, did I?”[break][break]
“The High King told us four cities were left. He opened four portals. They closed behind us, and we were trapped in the city we chose. Some folk got separated from each other for a long, long time.” He remembered the first trek he made, after Calyrex appeared at the gates. When he saw the little rabbit, alone and poisoned, braving the wastes to check on their cities, he swore there and then he would shoulder that legacy.[break][break]
“Everyone thought I was stupid, the first time I told them I was going to make the journey. There was no guarantee I’d make it, but I wouldn’t back down. Not when we didn’t even know if the other settlements were okay. Someone had to do it. So I told my king and queen a man’s got to be a little stupid.”[break][break]
For the first time on the road from Ballonlea, Zaria laughed.[break][break]
“A small correction, o Rider.” She said with mirth. “A hero has to be a little stupid.”[break][break]
“I’m no-”[break][break]
“None of that. My brother and I said the same thing, a long time ago, when those who doubted us said we were riding to our deaths.”[break][break]
“You rode out, too?”[break][break]
“A question for a day that will soon come.” She said as high castle walls grew larger. People were talking to one another. Whole crowds of them had gathered on the battlements. At the sight of the spectral steed, a mad cheer went out.[break][break]
“I think you have a job to do, Squire.” She smiled.

She’s got moxie, he’ll give her that. Just now, as it hovers on the brink of disaster, Navy thinks the world could use a little more moxie. Far be it from him to tell someone what they can and can’t do in a time of crisis. He’s not in the business of turning down help – especially when faced with an Iron Jugulis that seems real.[break][break]
So many of these paradoxes seem half-baked, like they’re caught between two worlds. This creature is solid, firmly here, and ready to kill them if they’re not careful. At least a random flare-up of electricity hasn’t activated the creature’s quark drive yet. Thank Arceus for small miracles.[break][break]
“It’s not a dragon or a steel type. I know that much.” Yakuza’s rocks fly out, battering the machine. Its three heads whine their protest at the attack, but they are not deterred. It will take more than that to bring down a Pokemon of this caliber.[break][break]
“Let me show ya why I call this guy Dragonslayer.” Surrounded by tera crystals, there’s no better place to terastallize. Energy is pulled into the crest, sending a pulse of energy that starts in the bones of his palm and crawls up his arm. Possibility lights up his arm, and he bathes his blade in fae light.[break][break]
Navy wonders what sort of worlds his Pokemon beholds in the reflections cast be the crystals. He imagines it’s a far more whimsical world than this one – a beautiful world, with a little more magic. Dragonslayer’s runes glow brighter for the effort, his handguard turning into an elaborate butterfly. The blade casts a spotlight on itself, drawing the attention of Iron Jugulis away from Yakuza.[break][break]
Each of its heads gathers energy. One comes alight with ice. Another, fire. The third, electricity. They fire their beams, each individual strand growing greater than the sum of its parts as it charges towards the Aegislash.[break][break]
“Show me what your buddy here can do!”
